Chapter 38
Last Chapter finally here. Hope you enjoy. Excuse you the errors, I edited to the best of my abilities. If you catch any mistakes please let me know or any plot holes.
"James?" Tyler said his voice barely above a whisper.
Adira heard it and turned to look at Tyler sending him a confused face mixed with scolding. She knew Tyler couldn't see her but couldn't help the instinct to scold him. She turned her head to look at the man in a tight black shirt that showed his lean tall figure, army pants and hiking boots making sure he was the only one who didn't hear.
The jet black haired man Tyler called James turned his head to the left in their direction and Adira's breath got caught in her throat. She stopped breathing as their eyes met and to her she felt like he seen her in the darkness that surrounded the room. He glared at the door for what felt like an eternity but soon examined behind him out of their sight. He turned back around and continued walking down the hall but stopped a door almost out of the teen's sight.
They watched as he took out a key attached to a sterling silver ball chain necklace out from underneath his black shirt and took it off. His large fingers covered the head of the key completely and put it into the door lock and putting it back around his neck again. He gave one final look around making sure no one was around before opening the door and disappearing into the room the door being shut behind him.
Adira wrapped her hand around the door above the door knob and slowly began to open it just enough for them to slip through without making any noises. She moved it carefully and stopped every once in a while afraid the door might make a sound. One last push to make enough space and they could slip out with ease. As soon as she pushed it just slightly the door let out a screeching scream and Adira stopped opening it. They both went silent almost immediately afterwards and stayed that way when they heard the door knob on the door James went through start to shake. Adira quickly shut the door like she had done when James first walked by.
The door James was behind opened and James stuck his head out looking both ways before he stepped out. His eyes were drawn to the room with the door cracked opened and he gave it a stern glare. Adira and Tyler stayed silent and both have stopped breathing. None of them wanted to find out what would happen if they were caught down there. They both could feel the tension that was floating around them as their hearts were pounding in their chest.
James turned back around and went back into the room shutting the door. Once that door clicked shut, Adira pushed the door opened but didn't push it a third time afraid it will make another sound. She grabbed Tyler's wrist and they made their way out the door. Adira stretched herself a little to slip through the door crack and out into the hall. Tyler did the same and moved slowly and quietly.
When they were both out, they silently but quickly walked back to the dead body hall and to the corridor door. As they passed the non-infected dead man, Adira couldn't help but examine him as they hurried by him once again taking in his appearance.
They pushed open one of the doors and walked out the door. Before they could stop it the door quickly slammed shut behind them causing the loud bang noise to echo throughout the halls. The two jumped turning to look at the door in horror. The second they turned back to ran to the staircase, a door slammed open and footsteps rapidly headed down the hall.
Adira and Tyler cursed under their breath and completely shot into bolting through the staircase door and up the stairs. They ran up to the first floor, pulled open the door and threw themselves in. Adira pulled the door closed behind her. She turned around to see Tyler running to the hall that lead to the cafeteria and she bolted towards him. When she was close, she leaped for him tackling him to the floor. The two were wrestling on the floor in the center of the lobby when James ran through the staircase door.
The first thing in his sight was Tyler and Adira both having each other in a headlock on their feet but bending over. Their laughter and groans filled his ears as he stomp towards them. Their back was turned to him when he grabbed them by the back of their collar and pulled them apart.
"Why are you out here?" He ordered the teens struggling to get out of his grip.
"Let us go." Tyler told him, his arms behind his head trying to get James to let go and his feet kicking as they were hanging an inch above the ground.
"What did you see?" He growled at them as he shook them.
"See what?" Tyler huffed out.
"You know what?" His voice boomed, looking at Tyler.
Adira kicked back striking James in the knee cap. James released them and groaned in pain. The two took a few steps away from him.
"Adira!" Dr. Yoshika called out when he spotted her as he walked out from the hallway the teens were going to go down minutes before.
"We were waiting for Dr. Yoshika." Adira answered annoyed and angry, "To tell us what they decided to do about Ciras." She cursed under her breath, "Don't ever pick us up like that again." She threatened, "In fact, don't ever put your hands on any of us." She added.
Adira shuffled over to Dr. Yoshika to meet him half way with Tyler close behind.
"Did they make a decision?" Tyler asked looking up at tall thin man.
"Yeah." He breathed, "They agreed with the surgery. We need medicine all the medicine we have are not enough and the rest are in the pharmacy, which is in urgent care building and it's cluttered with the undead."
"So what are you thinking?" Adira asked crossing her arms over her chest.
"We need to go on a run." He answered hesitantly, "I know a small pharmacy in the next city. We could grab what we need."
"Go talk to Veronica about the run." Adira told him, "I'll go get Chad. We'll go and whoever else Veronica assigns."
Dr. Yoshika nodded and walked away to go find Veronica. Adira and Tyler made their way to the others inside their room.
Upstairs, the two entered the room but they didn't walk in, well, at least not Tyler. Adira had him in a headlock while his arms were wrapped around her waist trying his best to squirm out of her grip. She began to give him a nuggy and he squirmed more and laughed.
Everyone glanced up at them just in time to witnessed Adira and Tyler tripping and stumble to the floor. Tyler hit the floor first his back hitting against it while Adira landed on top of him. They listened as laughter filled the room not only from the pair on the floor but Chad, Richie and Madison. Jade was asleep on the bed and Dan just looked at them as if they were on his property and he was an old man annoyed with children.
Chad finally spoke when they were getting up, "What's up?" He smiled at her.
Adira took a seat on the arm chair Chad was sitting on and he automatically wrapped his arms around her.
"How would you feel about a run?" She asked him looking down at him.
"What for?" Chad furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
"Medicine." Adira answered, "They approved the surgery and I need to make sure Ciras does not wake up during it. So I'm going to need anesthesia."
The pair looked at each other and Adira shrugged.
"Dr. Yoshika wants to come too." She informed him, "We need to go on a run for medicine and he knows a place for such supplies."
Dan's ears perk up after he heard this information, "I'm going."
Richie snapped his head in Dan's direction and listened in the conversation, "No." Richie scolded, "Who else is going?" He directed his questioned to Adira.
Dan slumped back in his seat his eyebrows pulled together as he mumbled something under his breath.
She shrugged her shoulders and shook her head, "Dr. Yoshika has to talk to Veronica about it first." She looked at him, "Dr. Yoshika and me for sure." She shrugged again, "Everyone is up to Veronica, except Chad, if he's up for it."
Chad nodded, "Yeah I'll go if you want me to go."
"Okay." Adira nodded.
The group waited for Dr. Yoshika to tell them what was going to happen with the run but instead Veronica ended up at their door sharing her decision. It wasn't long before a few runners, along with Adira, Dr. Yoshika and Chad were in the lobby packing up everything they needed. A truck and a jeep were parked out front with runners walking in and out of the hospital putting backpacks in the trunk. Soldiers and runners were walking back and forth from soldiers walking in and out of the weaponry and passing them to the runners who were stocking up the truck.
Some of the soldiers were talking to the runners while civilians were handing over folded paper containing things they needed to the runners. Adira handed a runner a few more backpacks while Chad was chatting with a runner on past experiences they had and what they learned each time they went on a run.
Tyler walked up to Adira as she got done handing the backpacks to a runner.
"I want to go." Tyler said to Adira.
"No." Adira told him, "I need you here to watch Madison." She said walking away from him but he followed.
"Madison could watch herself." Tyler argued, "I don't want to be in this hospital."
Adira immediately came to a halt. She looked around her and pulled Tyler to the side. Their backs were facing everyone else as they spoke.
"I need you here with Madison." Adira lowered her voice, "If anything goes wrong I need you to get her and Jade out of here."
The two looked at each other intensely. Tyler let out a sigh but before he could speak she stopped him.
"I want to make sure these people know what they are doing before I send you or Madison out there with them." She addressed, "I need you to keep an eye on the people around here. We can't just leave your sister here especially knowing what's in the basement. Let me make sure it's safe to be going on a run with these runners, if it seems okay, next run you'll go but right now I need you looking over her. "
Tyler let out a huff, "Okay." He caved in.
"Don't let her out of your sight." Adira ordered, "I need you to do something while I am gone."
"What is it?" He questioned his eyebrows furrowing in curiosity.
"I need you to teach Madison everything I taught you about fighting." She answered.
"I can't do that. I'm not skilled as you are." He denied.
"Teach her what you know." Adira said, "I haven't had the chance to teach her. She's good in some sections but I need her to be better. I just need her to know enough so she could defend herself."
"I don't know." Tyler huffed out shrugging his shoulders.
"Teach her defense moves." She said, "When I get back, I'll teach her the rest but for now you need to teach her but only train her in the room. Don't practice out here."
"Why?"
"I don't want them knowing how skilled you guys are." She admitted.
"Okay." He agreed, "Whatever I can just get back safe okay."
"Okay."
With that they split apart, Tyler heading back upstairs and Adira walking away further back into the lobby. Just then Reese, another runner, announced that they only had a few hours of light left and should be moving soon. Everyone who was going agreed and continued doing what they were doing. Some of the runners left the hospital and was hanging out by the vehicles waiting for the rest to join them so they could leave.
Adira turned around from walking out the door due to her hearing an argument become louder and louder. Dr. Yoshika came walking out of the hall to the left with Carrie following as he was putting his backpack on.
"You are not going." Carrie commanded him.
"Yes I am." Dr. Yoshika calmly told her.
Adira came walking towards them. She passed Chad chatting with a brunette girl, who laughed at something he had said. She ignored it and continued towards Dr. Yoshika and Carrie, who was still trying to get him to stay.
"What's wrong?" Adira asked as she approached them.
"He cannot go." Carrie told him, "We need you here."
"They need me out there." Dr. Yoshika insisted.
"My brother needs you." Carrie cried out, "William and Ciras need you. What happens when someone else gets hurt?"
"That won't happen and we'll be back before it happens." Dr. Yoshika answered still preparing himself.
"They have her." Carrie pointed to Adira, "Your place is here."
"Dr. Yoshika knows things I don't." Adira admitted, "He knows what most of the things look like and he knows what we need. He has to go."
"Then I'm going." Carrie insisted.
"Your brother needs you here." Adira reminded her, "I'll get him back here safe okay."
"Fine." Carrie agreed and walked away angry.
Adira tapped Dr. Yoshika on the shoulder as he walked to the front. Adira caught up with Carrie before she could get away and had her follow her into Dr. Yoshika office. When they got there, Adira began explaining to Carrie while she was in the room what she needed to do. She needed to clean Ciras's wound every four hours just to make sure it doesn't get infected. If the monitor started beeping, she had to stick a sharp object into the skull but not too deep to the point of killing him. With William, she had to make sure she puts an ice pack on his ribs and change it when the pack is warm. Adira informed her about packs of peas in the freezer already ready for her to go grab and use.
Adira made sure to let Carrie know if William wakes up and if William is feeling up for it to have him walk but slowly and for a short amount of time. William had to continue to take deep breathes so he doesn't get worse.
She looked over at Carrie's brother and let her know her brother should be waking up soon as he is doing perfectly fine on his own and his injuries have cleared up. Carrie just nodded her head and took in the information Adira had provided for her.
Adira walked out of the office and headed back to the lobby where Chad was still talking to the brunette girl. As she walked past them, she called for Chad.
"Babe, come on." Adira motioned to Chad that she was ready.
Chad glanced up at her and smiled just a bit.
He hasn't heard her call him that ever since the beginning of the apocalypse and ever since he found her. It was music to his ears to hear that name slip off her dark pink lips. The girl Chad was talking too whipped around her ombre hair flipped forward over her shoulder. Her intense blue eyes stared back at her as Adira focused on Chad.
When Chad didn't move or respond, Adira cocked an eyebrow up and snapped her head to the side.
Chad only smiled more and clicked his head to the side mirroring her. Chad's action made Adira know he was very aware of her calling him so she clicked her head to the side motioning for him to go. Chad stood up straight and laughed at Adira just for leaning her head to the side.
"We're ready." Adira softly said.
Chad shuffled away from the brunette girl and was making his way to the door. When he was looking at the floor, Adira glanced back at the girl and her light brown with golden outer rings eyes met her tense blue eyes just for a second. She turned back around to face forward and did a hair flip as she did it before Chad held his arm out to her to wrap around her.
When the three walked out, everyone equally got into a vehicle-Chad and Adira with three runners, including the blue eyed girl, in the jeep and Dr. Yoshika and five other, including Kyle and Kendrick, in the truck. They drove off; making a U turn and then turning right to the city the herd of infected came from.
As they drove down the road, two runners were up front, Chad was in between Adira and the blue eyed girl. Adira leaned her head back and closed her eyes just to feel the cool breeze that was captured inside from the windows and flew to the back seat running along Adira's neck and up across her face, and out the back, which had no shield or back window.
She listened to the sound of the wind blowing and the cars racing down the road. It was the first time she felt as if she could relax and listen to sounds of the things around her. She let her right arm hang out the window after she lifted her light brown hair from between the backseat and her back and let flow to the back.
What she didn't know was the messy curly haired boy beside her was staring at her with his light blue-green eyes. Her eyes were close as she enjoyed the calm air that surrounded her. Soon her lips pulled up into a relaxed grin. His blue-green eyes unconsciously roamed over her outstretched smooth neck to her chin to her dark lips, her smooth light brown skin tone, almost yellow tan, up to her light brown hair. The corner of his lips pulled up at the sight of her. If he had a camera he would have captured the moment. If it wasn't the apocalypse and any day wouldn't be their last, anyone who would look at the captured moment would believe it was a picture of a girl enjoying a road trip with the plain background. Nothing but golden dried dirt and an ombre blue sky taking up the space behind her.
She gave off a relaxing energy that just bounced off of her and jumped to him sending him into a relaxed state by just watching her. He wished he could stay in the moment forever. But even he knew good moments like that never last; especially, not with them two.
"What are you smiling about?" Chad playfully smiled.
She opened her eyes and let her head fall to the side to see a smiling Chad staring at her. She smiled even more, "winter's coming." She whispered happily at him.
He furrowed his eyebrows and chuckled, "And you know that how?"
Suddenly the car suddenly stopped. Chad looked ahead and Adira jolted up right to see what was going on. They made it into the city and only had very little sun time before the darkness over took them. Chad looked around to see very little light reflecting off the buildings and shadows replaced most of the light. The horizon was a deep shade of light blue on top, deep red layered beneath it and a pinch between the red sky and the empty land.
Adira hasn't realized how fast the sun was setting but then again she wasn't watching the sunset. Chad was in a deep of trance of relaxation and too deep into examining and watching Adira he didn't bother looking up.
The jeep stopped to let the truck lead the way since Dr. Yoshika was giving directions to the location they needed. Adira sat up straight as they continued deeper into the city not wanting to be caught off guard if anything were to make their presence know. The blue eyed girl chooses that time to introduce herself to Adira.
"By the way, my name's Giovanna Gwenore." She smiled a perfect coral teeth smile that was surrounded by light pink lips.
Adira and Chad turned their heads towards her as she was leaning her back between the car door and the backseat showing off her lean long body. Adira took the chance to examine over her. The long sleeve black v line neck T shirt gripped her lean body. Her arm lay over her abdomen while the other hand was in her ombre hair holding her head up with her open fist. She was tan but a bit lighter compared to Adira's skin tone. Her t-shirt was tucked into her well fitted skinny jeans. The jeans go into black Doc Martin's ankle boots.
"But you could call me GG." She added when their eyes met, "You're Adira, right?"
"Yup." Adira finally answered, "Colt." She added her last name.
The car took a few turns before it stopped in the street and was parked between two other cars. Everyone hopped out of the vehicle while the truck was parked across the street. Everyone packed up: swinging a backpack over their shoulder, putting as many weapons on their person as they can and grabbing a gun.
"Here" Ryan's deep voice ran through Adira's ears as he stood next to her going through his bag. He shoved a 9 mm hand gun in to her chest when she swung the backpack over her shoulder.
She took it, "Why are you giving me this?" She asked.
"You're going to need it." He answered his voice emotionless. "Here, man." He called out to Chad, who looked at him. He gently tossed the gun to Chad before zipping up and throwing the backpack over his shoulders. "They're already loaded so don't worry about that. "Here are some extra bullets just in case." He held out his arms and in his hands were extra filled magazines.
The vehicle doors slamming shut echoed through the empty city. Everyone came together in the middle of both cars and talked about what they were going to do.
Dr. Yoshika pulled out a map from his vintage satchel, "The pharmacy should be in there." He pointed to the store across the street as he looked back down at the map.
The building was an old red brick building with glass windows almost covering the bottom half of the building and leaving equally amount of space on the side. Above was a pastel dark blue rectangular awning with big capital white letter 24 Street shop. Inches above the awning were sitting three identical long rectangular glass windows with an arch top sitting evenly a part from each other. The rest of the building was nothing but warn out red brick with a few tiny cracks.
"That's a shop there ain't going to be no drugs in there." Ryan insisted.
Ryan was muscular but not muscular enough to look intimidating. His dark hair went in every direction making Adira wonder whether or not he did his hair like that or if he actually woke up like that? A few hairs fell down his forehead and into his beautiful emerald green eyes that were getting darker with every second the sunlight goes down. His eyes pierced into Dr. Yoshika's chocolate brown eyes
"There's a pharmacy in the back." Dr. Yoshika said matter of fact.
Adira watched his interaction with Dr. Yoshika but she couldn't help look at both Ryan and Giovanna, who were standing next to each other, and thinking about if this was high school they would look like the school couple.
Thinking about Giovanna, Adira notice her hour glass figure as she stood there across from her. Her eyes flicker to Ryan, whose arm was crossed over his chest and his legs were slightly spread out, and she examines him. Just like Giovanna, he wore a tight fitting black short sleeve v neck shirt, which happens to flaunt what he had on his lean body. He wore dark camouflage army pants with combat boots. She couldn't help notice his smooth olive skin tone.
She also observed the rest of the runners that were with her. It was just then that she noticed Giovanna and her were the only girls in the group while all the others were men. They were all taller but not all of them had the same built.
The buffest seemed to be Ryan while the ones with hardly any muscles at all were Kendrick and Kyle.
It was when Giovanna put her hand on Dr. Yoshika chest stopping him from walking any further that Adira came out of her thoughts.
"Where do you think you're going?" She asked him.
Everyone stopped walking and turned to look at the two curious on what was going on. Dr. Yoshika furrowed his eyebrows as he looked down at her.
"Well I'm going to go get medicine for Ciras's surgery." He stated, "That's why I'm here."
"No you're not."
"What's the problem?" Adira stepped towards them.
"He's staying in the vehicles." Giovanna demanded looking from Dr. Yoshika to Adira, "He is our only doctor. We cannot risk it."
"He knows what the things we need looks like." Adira reminded her, "That is why he is here and he is coming in."
"Why doesn't he just tell us what they look like?" She turned to look at Dr. Yoshika.
"Then what exactly?" Adira shrugged, "We leave him out here in the open street and what happens when someone comes by and sees him hidden in the vehicle?" She paused, both their eyes staring straight at each other, "He's safer in there with us than he is in the cars. He is coming." She stated.
She took hold of Dr. Yoshika's arm and pulled him forward away from Giovanna.
"You guys, agree with this?" Giovanna asked to the runners in the back just staring.
The runners glanced at each other and shrugged at her not really caring.
"He's here for a reason, Giovanna." Ryan told her, "He'll be safer with us than in the vehicles." He repeated the words Adira used as both Adira and Dr. Yoshika walked by.
The group ignored Giovanna and went back to what they were doing. Dr. Yoshika cupped his hands over his eyes and tried to see what was on the other side of the glass. Adira came up behind him and spoke.
"See anything?" She asked adjusting the straps on her backpack.
"Nah." He answered wiping the glass in a circular motion with his sleeves, "Can't really see inside though." He pushed himself off the glass and stood straight up.
He clapped his hands together trying to get the dust that had managed to get on his hands off of him. Ryan shoved his Beretta ARX160 .22 LR semiautomatic Rifle into Adira's chest a little too hard than he meant too as she walked up to the doors. He picked up a crow bar and started hitting the thin chain that wrapped around the doors handle. The air around the two was filled with Ryan's grunts, the metal on metal colliding together and the chains rattling with every hit.
Adira didn't say anything to him as she watched him trying to break the lock and the chain. Finally after a few forceful hits the chain unravels clicking against the handle bars before it drops to the floor. Everyone got closer to the door when they heard the chain falling and they held up their guns ready to fire. Ryan was huffing when he tossed the crow bar down. His eyes met Adira's when he went to take back his gun and seen her left eyebrow rose making her arch even more pointy.
"Shut up." Ryan told her, "That took a lot of energy."
Ryan looked around to see everyone ready for them to open the door. He got in position and put his hand on the handle. Adira grabbed Dr. Yoshika placing him in the middle of the group for protection. She took her place next to Ryan and took hold of the handle. She looked over at Ryan waiting for him to give her a signal that he was ready. His eyes found hers before he looked back getting a nod from everyone then nodding at Adira.
The two pulled open the door as quick as possible. Almost immediately after the doors been open, a burst of death and decay shot out at them. The group lifted their arm to their nose as they took a whiff of the rotten stench. Half of the groups gagging reflex kicked in while Adira had looked away from the store since the stench were making her eyes water. She took a deep breath into her arm before looking back.
The sound of something being sprayed ran through Ryan and Adira's ear. Soon after Adira was shoved forward and when she turned around Dr. Yoshika ran off away from the group to the wall a few feet away. His arm was supporting his scrunched forward body as lunch ended up on the floor. Adira immediately bent forward her face hiding behind the door as her lunch threatened to come back up. She waved her hand in front of her face trying to calm her gagging reflex and divert her attention to something else.
Everyone but Adira observed Dr. Yoshika when they heard him huff out air and sigh. He spit out whatever was left before standing up and whipping his mouth. When he was done, he turned to the group and found them staring.
"Sorry." He breathed out.
"You good?" Kyle called out.
Dr. Yoshika nodded. "Yeah, for now." He took his place in the center of the group.
Adira recovered and held her gun up ready to fire, just like everyone else. The two took the first steps into the store and pointed their guns on their side of the store scanning the area. They side stepped as they moved deeper into the store, the lights behind them from the others holding flashlights allowed them to maneuver around the stuff on the floor.
From the minimum light they had, they could see some of the shelves had been knocked over and some of the shops goods were either shattered on the floor or still in tacked and shuffled all over floor and was almost half of their items were missing. As they walked down the aisle, they split into two groups- one following Ryan and the rest following Adira. They were careful and quiet as can be as they walked down them. The shelves were not too large but were not small at all. Adira could barely see above the shelves while someone as tall as Ryan or Chad, who could see exactly the other person in the next few aisles.
Every time they went by a space in the aisles, the people would turn left and right glancing in every direction making sure the person in the front didn't miss anything. Sometimes they would end up pointing their gun at one of their own when passing through. Crunching erupted through the atmosphere as the runners stepped on broken glass or pieces of cereal that have been spilled all over the floor. None of them paid any attention to the crunching beneath their feet with every step, all they cared for was getting the place cleared and taking the medicine and medical equipment back to the hospital so Adira and Dr. Yoshika could get ready for the surgery.
The smell of decay and death gotten stronger with every step they took closer to the back and gagging could be heard throughout the store. When they got to the back without harm or any evidence of potential danger, some of the people took off and search the rest of the aisles trying to get away from the smell and not wanting to find out what the horrible stench is. Others, like Ryan, Adira, Chad and Dr. Yoshika, were left to reveal the source of the smell, which so happened to be in the pharmacy, and none were looking forward to it.
Ryan broke the lock off the metal window shutters and pushed the window up creating a sound of rattling metal to fill the air. Chad pointed his flashlight inside the pharmacy going across from one side to the other. Chad nodded at the two giving the signal for them to go in. Adira and Ryan jumped over the counter with ease and aimed their gun in all directions quickly making sure they weren't caught off guard by anything or anyone.
They moved like military trained soldiers clearing a room from the front all the way to the back. Adira was barely able to see through the darkness with the help of the light coming from Chad and Ryan's flashlight that barely managed to shine between the shelves of medicine bottle. No medicine was missing or on the floor, papers weren't everywhere, medicine pills stayed on the table where they were probably waiting to be counted and put into the empty medicine bottle labeled with different names of people who will probably never need them again.
At the end of the last section to search, Adira jumped back at the feeling of something tugging at her pants before she felt something thin and pointy wrapping around her ankle. She let out a loud gasp as her back knocked into the shelf behind her. White medicine bottles with different colored caps and orange medicine bottle with white lids but different shape all tumbled to the floor and some on her head and shoulders.
A flash of light beamed behind Adira making her shadow appear in front of her just standing there staring back at her.
"You okay?" Ryan whispered.
She slowly lowered her eyes as she watched her shadow carefully as if it was going to attack. Lying on the floor with a metal cabinet underneath it was a skeleton infected. The infected had hardly any skin and was all bone. The pale cheek skin was completely sunken in and the eye sockets were dark and hollow. The infected reached its boney fingers out to grab Adira but its meatless arms were too weak and had no support from the shoulders. Adira saw the shoulder blades popping out and the ribs were poking out much more than an unhealthy human being ribs.
Adira stepped behind the shelf and turned around her hand going up the moment the bright white light met her eyes, "Fine." She softly huffed out as she looked through her fingers.
He looked at her for a moment; his eyes roaming her up and down with his eyebrows frowning. His gaze went from Adira to the skeleton infected that hasn't been fed in days. She hurled around to stare at it before she brought her leg up and stomped down on the infected head squishing it into pieces. The white light hovering over Adira soon ran back to Ryan and Adira took one last look at the infected even if she could hardly see it before following Ryan.
"Clear?" He said more as a question to Adira than a statement.
She nodded, "Clear." She spoke softly.
"Clear!" He called out and soon enough two thuds only seconds from each other danced through the pharmacy.
"Grab what you two need and let's get going." Ryan told Adira and Dr. Yoshika, "It's already dark and I'd like to get back before morning." He jumped over the counter and went with the others, "Take anything that will be useful to us." He told the runners who were rummaging through the shop.
Adira and Dr. Yoshika started scavenging through the medicines and anything they needed for the surgery was tossed to Adira and shoved into her bag. The rest that was just needed to make sure the people of Utrena got well quick if any were to get sick or injured was shoved into Chad's and Dr. Yoshika's bag. They continued to rummage through all the medicine on the plain white shelves and the drawers beneath them. Adira went through the metal medical fridges that were against the back wall and even some at the foot of every shelf.
When each of the three of them were finished stuffing their bags, they met back up at the front counter. They looked at each other zipping up their bags and nodded at each other.
"Done?" Adira asked them.
She got a nod in return. They tossed over their bags gently before jumping over the counter once more. The chains rattled under Dr. Yoshika's feet and almost sent his body back into the counter but gained his balance and they headed to the front where light illuminated from the top of the shelves.
In the front, some runners were on one knee putting things in their bags while others were up and swung their backpacks over their shoulders and waiting for the rest of the group. In front of the doors peering out was Ryan with his back facing the group his back muscles making an appearance through his black shirt as his arms were crossed over his chest?
The gloomy light blue light radiant off the moon shone through the windows making Ryan's silhouette even darker. His head turned from one side to the other, making his deep emerald green eyes sparkle under the moonlight and more noticeable. He took a deep breath his chest buffing out from lungs expanding then he exhaled with a big huff. He shook his head and rubbed his big hands over his face.
"What is it?" Adira asked, stepping forward her eyebrows narrowing in concern.
"We can't go back." He answered immediately drawing everyone's attention, "It's too dark. I don't want to risk losing any of you." He addressed everyone his eyes roaming over every single person.
"What do we do?" Kyle asked shrugged his shoulders.
"We wait till the first light of morning." He answered.
"In here?" Giovanna face scrunched in disgust as she looked around the place, "How does anyone sleep in this funk?"
Ryan looked around in search of something but no one knew what. He took a glance outside his head moving from one side to the other as if he's about to walk across the street. His eyes roamed over every building in sight his eyes narrowing as he went pulling in his lips between his teeth.
"Alright, let's find another building close by to settle in." He told them, "Come on two people check a building and do it quick."
They walked out of the shop and they paired up splitting apart in search of refuge. They all did the same routine looking through the windows provided; see what inside and knocking on the windows or doors waiting for someone or something to pop out at them to make their presence known. If nothing popped out or no one came out, they went in to search the place and see if it was fit for a night stay. Eventually, Kendrick and Kyle found a small office to settle in a little further down the street. They informed everyone about it and in the office is where they took refuge for the night.
The bright glistening sunlight peeked through the windows of every building even reflecting off of their windows announcing the suns arrival to the group. One of the suns veins managed to creep through the window and squeeze itself between crevasses in the middle of two plain wooden desks into Giovanna's eyes.
When everyone was awake, it took them no longer than five minutes to grab all their belongings and get in their vehicles. Once all in and ready to go, they drove off making it back to the hospital as quickly as possible.
They pulled into the drive way and met up with a line of soldiers standing out front holding their weapons across their chest. When the vehicles were put into park, Adira, Chad and Dr. Yoshika wasted no time jumping out of the vehicle.
"Dr. Yoshika, we need to put a room together where we could do the surgery." Adira immediately ordered walking inside handing Dr. Yoshika the medicine.
"Where?" Dr. Yoshika asked already walking away from her backwards.
"Any room big enough for us to move around." Adira answered.
"Alright." He nodded turning forward and disappears down the hallway.
"You two." Adira pointed to two male soldiers that were helping putting in the stuff.
Their brown eyes looked up at her.
"I need you to go get Ciras on a gurney and prepare to move him to another room." She ordered, "Wait for Dr. Yoshika to tell you where to wheel him."
They nodded without arguing, putting down the stuff and making their way down the same hallway Dr. Yoshika went down. Adira turned around to go grab the rest of the medicines and medical supplies they needed for the surgery.
"I need Carrie and Chad's help getting the supplies into Dr. Yoshika's office and the surgery room." Adira called out to anyone making sure they knew she needed Carrie while Chad was already grabbing the bags they needed, "Someone find Tyler while you're at it."
Carrie eventually appeared and was given orders to grab any of Dr. Yoshika's bag immediately when Adira past her from placing most of the stuff down. Carrie took the medicine back to the office and left them there. Dr. Yoshika eventually came back informing Adira that he had found a room and the two soldiers, Adira ordered to move Ciras was already told where to go. Adira gave him a new order, which was to start setting up the room for surgery letting him knows what they needed in there and to have Tyler help if he finds him.
After everything was set up and Ciras was in the room, Tyler and Dr. Yoshika let Adira know and she followed them to the room.
"You sure you could do this?" Chad questioned Adira as they walked down the halls.
She sucked in air and exhaled, "No." She shook her head, "I'm terrified and the only thing reassuring me is the fact that we basically grew up in a hospital."
The room was all the way in the back of the hospital behind large corridors much like the ones in the basement. Three doors to the right behind the large stainless steel door were where the soldiers and Ciras were waiting in a plain white large room. Ciras was in the center in the slightly emptied room with the two soldiers on either side of the bed. Three large round lights hung above him while he was hook up to an electrocardiograph monitor right by him at the head of the bed.
On the wall to the right was another small room for hand washing. Beside that in the corner to the right against the back wall was a small shelf filled with surgical supplies. Back in the middle, on the left of the bed was the anesthesia just sitting there, tubes running down the tray and a mask at the end covered Ciras's mouth and noise.
"Is he already under?" Adira asked rushing in the other room to clean and sterilize her hands then walking out.
"Yeah we put him under when Dr. Yoshika went to go get you." One of the soldiers known as Jeff answered the moment she came out of the room.
A snap against the skin ran through the room due to Adira putting on white surgical gloves and letting the opening part of the glove snap on her wrist. Tyler came up behind her already in gloves, a surgical gown and a face mask, tying a face mask to her and putting a surgical gown over her clothing.
"Ready?" Tyler asked a hint of laughter in his voice.
She shook her head, "No, not at all."
"Come on we basically grew up in a hospital." Tyler assured her.
Adira let out chuckle at his choice of reassurance.
"We got this." He nudged her.
"By We do you mean me?" Her eyebrows shot up, "Growing up in a hospital doesn't qualify anyone to do a surgery." She looked at him, "Especially one that could go so wrong." She breathed, "You could leave now." She aimed at the soldiers, "You could wait at the door in case."
The men left and waited outside with Chad. Once they were gone, the trio got to work on the surgery. During the surgery, Carrie's brother had awoken when Chad was in the patient's rooms checking on the two younger men. Almost immediately Chad let a skinny short soldier, named Oscar, knows about Carrie's brother and told him to let her know he needed her in the room. Carrie rushed it to the room once she heard about the good news and she burst through the doors. When she saw her brothers sitting up with his eye wide open with Chad checking him, her blue eye's beamed and lightened up at the same time her small hand covered her curved lips.
She rushed over to him, catching him off guard with an embrace as he was pulled into his sister. His matching blue eyes widen as he looked at Chad. He heard his sister's soft beaming voice and his widen eyes and frowning lips switched to his eyes brightening up and his lips turning upward into a grin showing off his pearly whites.
Chad explained to them that he will be fine and he doesn't sense anything wrong. He made sure to have Adira look at him and check him just to be extra careful. Chad went back to waiting for Adira to be done when he figured the two men were okay.
The surgery took until lunch time when Adira walked out of the surgery room with fresh blood on her surgical coat. She gave Jeff and his fellow soldier an okay to go lift Ciras back on the gurney and take him back to the room with William.
"How'd it go?" Chad got up, looking at his bloody girlfriend taking off her gloves.
"Fine." Adira breathed out a little robotic, "Besides the blood gushing out at me taking me completely by surprise?" She said looking down at her blue coat with her face all scrunched up, "He should make it. His heart rate and breathing is no longer lowering and is back to normal."
He chuckled and took off her coat for her, "You okay?" He asked taking a closer look at her.
She looked calm but her hands and body was shaking mildly but he noticed it. He threw the coat to the side and looked back at her.
"I never want to do that again." She stated.
"Come on." He nodded wrapping his arm around her waist and rubbing her back, "Its lunch time."
"Not hungry." She said, "Not after that."
Chad chuckled as he watched her walked away, "Let's hope no one else gets a blow to the head like that again." He joked with a sheepish smile.
She shook her head. "Don't worry."
They walked down the hall together while Tyler and Dr. Yoshika were still cleaning the tools. The duo walked past Dr. Yoshika's office and Adira paused before going in to check up on William. William laid silent his head to one side as his left arm was draped over his abdomen over the thin sheet of blanket. His breath was soft as he inhaled and exhaled his chest rising and falling matching his breathing.
Adira noticed the blonde boy missing from his bed on the other side of the room. When she asked Chad, he simply explained he had woken up and Carrie took him. As they walked down the hall leaving William to sleep, Chad made sure to let Adira know to recheck Carrie's brother just to be safe. She nodded at his request but she was going to do that after she had some sleep. The surgery drained her of all her energy.
When they got up to the room, it was completely empty from any human presence. The couple figured everyone, apart from Tyler, was downstairs in the cafeteria enjoying lunch. It was good for Adira sense she would be able to fall asleep without being bothered or feeling uncomfortable with others around her. Before she went straight for the couch, she went over to the bed and pulled the gun Ryan had given them and put it in her bag.
As she got closer to the couch after shoving the backpack back in its place, she slumped more and more lower until her hands and knees was on the couch holding her up. She leaned her body to the side allowing her left side to hit the couch and landing her in the fetus position.
Once she hit the couch, she fell into a deep sleep completely forgetting about Chad, who watched his girlfriend just go to sleep. He smiled at her resting body that didn't make a sound except for her light breathing. Chad just smiled at his girlfriend while making his way to the couch and taking the small spot behind her. He too fell asleep with his arm draped around her waist.
The couple has been asleep for that whole afternoon without being bothered by anyone. By the time it was time for dinner, they were awoken by a heavy force suffocating the two trapping them between the couch. Chad laughed at the same time he was groaning at the heavy weight that just appeared on them. Adira groaned as her body was being pushed even more into the couch and dug her head into a small squared pillow she was using not even bothered by the weight.
"Get off." Chad groaned in laughter trying to push the weight off.
Adira already knew it was Tyler not only is he heavy enough to suffocate them but Adira and Tyler always had a thing of laying on each other when they weren't paying attention. Plus, Madison was way lighter than the weight that was being forced upon them at that moment. So it was either Madison gained a lot of weight over night or Tyler was being, well, Tyler.
Tyler wiggled around on top of them making sure to put all his weight on them to annoy them as much as possible. He stretched his arms as if he was stretching and trying to crack his back. Eventually, his shoulder blade popped out when his arm went into a certain position and it poked Adira right in the ribs. This caused her to go into a fit if giggles that were muffled from the pillow she was hiding under.
She quickly pulled her arm into her side blocking his shoulder blade from poking her ribs any further. Tyler flung out his arms as if he was a bird getting ready to fly and relaxed himself. He let out an overly exaggerated sigh of comfort.
"This is the life." He said his voice smooth yet humorous, "You two are quite comfortable. I think this would be my new bed."
A softer younger laughter filled the room making Chad and Adira aware of her presence, "Dog pile!" She laughed. All three of them screamed out 'no' in sync as she put her foot on a clear spot on the couch to help lift her up and jumped right on top of Tyler sideways facing the same way Adira and Chad were laying.
"How much do you weigh?" Adira muffled voice question from underneath the pillow.
"Oh- my- god!" Tyler laughed, "What have they been feeding you?" He shouted.
Madison just laughed and positioned herself where she was now sitting on Tyler's abdomen. He ordered Madison to get off through his laughter his eyes squinting as his teeth showed through his turned up lips. Madison shook her head childishly before laying back and stretching herself out as if she was lying on a comfy new bed. She made the same groan in delight Tyler had used when he hopped onto the couple when they were sleeping.
"Get..." Chad moaned.
"Off!" Adira finished for him.
The pair was both lying belly down on the couch Chad slightly on top of Adira. They looked at each other their faces inches away from their lips touching as the two siblings refused to get off. The couple shared a look and the grinned knowing what each other were thinking as if they read each other's mind.
Chad forced his arm around Adira's waist right underneath her arms. Adira did the same with the arm next to Chad except she wrapped hers around his shoulders. They bother pressed their palms flat to the couch getting into a kind of push-up position. As the siblings continued laughing, the couple whispered to each other counting to three before they pushed up with every ounce of strength they could get. With a lot of force and resistance, the siblings finally fell off: Madison rolled off and hit the floor with a thud but instead of crying she fell into a fit of laughter dropping her head into the floor and Tyler slide off of them his feet hitting the ground an inch from stepping on Madison but soon his balance failed him and he tripped forward.
Just like Madison, Tyler laughter mixed with Madison. Both of the couple's lips turned upwards in a grin as they both looked down at the siblings rolling around on the floor laughing. The two sit up right on the couch not giving the siblings any time to come back.
"You guys weigh a ton." Chad commented.
"What is wrong with you people?" Adira asked.
Tyler turned on to his back and prompted himself up on his elbows to look at the two. "You guys slept almost for the whole day."
"It's dinner time too." Madison informed them lifting her head in the process, "So come on lets go get some food!" Madison cheered as she jumped up.
"What time is it?" Adira stood up rubbing her eyes and arching her back.
"Six o'clock." Madison answered peeking at the clock above the door.
Chad got up and the four walked out of the room heading for the cafeteria. All the way down, Adira's stomach cried making a deep crying whale noise.
In line, Adira came up behind Tyler wrapping her arms around his shoulders and leaning on him causing him to slouch forward just slightly. He let out a deep laugh as he tried keeping them from colliding into the floor. The cafeteria was packed as usual. Their laughter was drowned out by most of the chatter and the plastic utensils hitting each other and the trays.
When they were done grabbing their food, they scanned the large room for a place to sit. Their eyes wondered around until they spotted Dan, Jade and Richie sitting at a booth across the room against one of the longer walls. As they got closer, Dan was stuffing his face into his food without even coming up for air. Jade laughed at Dan stuffing his face while also eating her dinner with Richie.
Most of their dinner was spent eating but occasionally they would talk to each other. Eventually, Adira left the table to go check in on Dr. Yoshika once she was done with her food. The others stayed behind to hang out with each other and relax. As she stepped out of the hallway and into the lobby heading to the next hallway, she looked up towards the stairway to see Carrie coming down calling her name. Adira stopped and took a few steps towards her before they stood almost toe to toe.
Carrie smiled up at her, "I've been looking for you."
"Mhm." Adira hummed actually looking up at her.
She saw Carrie was followed by a blonde boy that looked similar to her. His bright blonde hair made Adira aware of whom he was but she almost didn't recognize him with his eyes open. He looked down from his dark heavy shoes to Carrie all the way until he met Adira, who wasn't staring at him anymore when he looked up.
"I wanted you to meet someone." She said with a wide smile showing off her perfect lined teeth.
She linked her arm through the blonde boy's arm and pulled him forward, "This is my brother Keith." She said flicking her clear blue eye up at the boy named, Keith, "This is the girl, Adira." She tugged on her arm, "She was the one who saved you when you stopped breathing."
Adira's brown eyes with golden rings gazed upon Keith. Unlike his sisters, who had clear blue eyes, his dark icy blue irises met Adira's. It was the first thing Adira noticed and her eyes were immediately drawn to even if she didn't want to.
"Your heart actually stopped but-" She trialed off.
Once he made eye contact with Adira, he didn't stop staring at her. Her eyes were so unique to him. She stole glances at him for just a second as she continued to talk to Carrie
"But technically your lungs stopped working to so." She stole a glance at him but looked back at Carrie, "I guess you did stop breathing." Stole another glance and quickly looked away as he continued to stare.
"Thank you." He held out his hand to her, his voice soft yet ruff, "I really appreciate your help." He smiled a perfectly a lined smile, just like his sisters.
She stared down at his hand not showing any signs of moving. When she looked back up at his face, he continued to stare at her. She let out a deep breath and took his hand. His icy blues stood out to her and for some unknown reason it made her uncomfortable.
"No problem." Adira finally said not breaking eye contact, "I just did what was instinctive." She shrugged.
He continued to stare at her. He wasn't examining her either. He wasn't taking in her appearance because if he was his eyes would be looking at everything from her brown hair to her shoes but he only kept his eyes on hers. He never once had seen anyone with her eye color before.
They continued to make eye contact for another minute or two while he never let go of her hand. Adira swallowed a lump that had formed in her throat and tried pulling away gently.
"Well." She started when he released her hand, "It's good to see you're up and healthy." She gave a light smile.
"I just wanted to say thanks again for taking action." Carrie spoke up rubbing the back of her neck, "I don't know what we would do without you."
"Again it was no problem." She said trying to ignore his eyes burning into her.
He brushed his short blonde hair to the side. He took his time allowing the hair to glide right through his fingers, "I need a haircut." He commented examining the length of his locks.
"Well." Adira huffed out, "I should get going." She smiled trying hard not to show she was uncomfortable.
"Oh where were you heading?"
"Dr. Yoshika's office." She answered, "Check on William and see how Ciras is holding up."
"Of course." Carrie beamed, "Well we'll see you later then?"
"Yeah sure, see you later." Adira smiled with a nod, "I should go."
Carrie wrapped her arms around Adira, "Thank you again."
Adira laughed and gently tapped her on her shoulder. Keith smiled down at her and held out his hand once more.
"It was nice meeting you." Keith spoke once Adira had taken his hand, "Adira. Thank you for saving me. I owe you a big one."
"Nice meeting you too." Adira smiled, "And really it's no problem." She shook her head and waited for him to release her fingers from his huge hand.
When he did, Adira walked off waving bye to them as she disappeared down the hall. Carrie and Keith continued their way to the cafeteria chit chatting on their way down there. For the next few hours, Adira had been checking Ciras monitors and helping William walk from half way out into the hallway and back. Occasionally, his breath would become deep and heavy it forced Adira to set him down so he could breathe and get air.
When he was able to get back up, Adira took him back into the room so he could rest some more.
Adira repeated that process for two more days. She advised William to stay in the room for another few days just to make sure he was hundred percent okay. She would go through breathing exercises with him while she was there making sure his ribs healed. Sometimes William will come out for dinner when he could with the help of Adira then back to the room it was for him.
Throughout the days, Adira couldn't help but wonder what was in the room James had been seen going in. Ever since Adira and Tyler witnessed James being down there, Adira noticed him more around the hospital. She had a tendency to watch him when she came across him and mentally kept a note on where he would be and where he was going.
Every time she walked passed James she couldn't help but get an eerie vibe from him. The two never talked to each other but from time to time he would glance over at her with his calm brown eyes. Adira would give him a little nod and a small smile, if she ever caught him looking, just to hide her suspicious and creeped out emotions. Every time she noticed him going in the staircase she wondered if he was going down to the room in the basement.
Just him going into the staircase made her more and more curious on what was down there. When Adira was once hanging out on the staircase on her room level, she witnessed James heading down to the basement and it didn't take a rocket science to figure out where he was going.
The next day, she ended up on the stair case again in the exact spot. As she sat there on a step, she couldn't help but remember when the decision for Ciras's surgery was being made it was in the evening when James went down to the basement. The day before it was almost exactly the evening when she witnessed James going down without him knowing she was up on the seventh floor.
That day she wondered if he had a routine of going down there. If he did then what did he go down there for?
Why did he feel the need to go down there?
What exactly made him go down there when he did?
While Adira pondered the thought, throwing around some ideas in her head of what could be down there, a door below her screamed as it was being opened. When the door shut close with a loud bang, she slowly and quietly slides herself to the other side to the railing and looked down. Just on cue, she saw James jogging lightly down the steps. His footsteps were loud as they collided with the cement stairs but no matter whether he wanted them to be loud or not he couldn't stop them from making any noise.
When she felt he was going to look up, she casually moved to the other side and stayed silent. When she thought it was clear she looked between the bars and looked down only to see him open the door and walked through the door. The door closing with a deep bang that echoed through the staircase.
Her mind wondered again to what was in the room. What was in there that needed him to have a routine?
The next night, Adira was sitting on the staircase again. She leaned over the railing looking down pondering on whether or not she should go down there and see for herself what was down there.
Should she take the risk of actually going down there or just leave it alone?
She pulled in her lips between her teeth before they were pulled into a smirk. She pushed herself off the railing, pulling open the door and made it to her room. She went to Tyler's side of the bed. He was on his side in a fetus position. His hands were laying under his pillow one hand holding his head while the other was slightly in front of his face.
She gently placed her hand on his shoulder and gently shook him, "Tyler." She whispered.
When he didn't stir, she shook him again. Nothing, again she shook him but more ruff shake but not too much to wake the girls behind him.
In a matter of seconds, Tyler's hand was flying out from under the pillow his fist around the grip of a knife. His head was snapped up an inch above the pillow. A smacking sound erupted through the room seconds after his hand went flying out from under the pillow.
His breath became deep and quick. His eye widen when he seen Adira's fingers wrapped around his wrist, the knife an inch away from her temple and her just staring dead at him when his eye met hers. He blinked a few times to make sure if it was really Adira that he was about to stab. When he saw her figure still staring down at him through the darkness, his eyes widen the feel of guilt hitting him.
The only emotion she showed through her facial expression she held was an arched eyebrow and her blinking down at him.
"Up for a little scavenging?" Adira broke the silence.
Tyler rubbed his eyes as he prompted himself up with one arm and stared at her letting what she said sink in. He knew what she meant by that question and his lips pulled upward. She smiled knowing he was already catching on to what she was getting at. Tyler slide out of bed the best he can without waking the girls and put on his shoes. They slipped out the room without waking a soul and they headed to the staircase.
"We need something to be able to pick the lock if the door ends up being locked." Adira reminded Tyler as they slowly jogged down the stairs.
Tyler slowed down his pace until he finally came to a complete stop. The two stared at each other for just a moment trying to think about what they could do. Tyler's lips pulled into a smile as a light bulb went off in his head. He smiled up at Adira, who was looking up at the bottom of the stairs above her. Adira had to do a double take when she seen Tyler smiling.
Her eyebrows pulled together as he smiled at her.
"Come on." Tyler said pulling Adira by the arm down the stairs, "I got an idea."
"What?" Adira questioned as she was tugged down the stairs to the first floor, "Tyler? What?"
He pulled open the door and walked through it. They began making their way to the hallway that contained Dr. Yoshika's office and the surgical room. The two looked at the soldiers staring out the huge windows to the outside. Kendrick was one of those soldiers but was the only one who spotted Adira and Tyler.
He turned to face them, "Hey, Adira, Tyler." He called out.
The pair turned around. They smiled when they saw it was Kendrick and gave him a small wave as he approached.
"Hey." He repeated.
"Hey." The two smiled in sync.
"What are you guys doing up?" He asked the two, "You should be getting some rest."
"Just couldn't sleep." Tyler shrugged away the lie.
"Oh yeah." Kendrick nodded, "I know the feeling. So where you guys going?"
"Um-"Tyler looked over at Adira, who looked back at him.
"We were just on our way to see Dr. Yoshika." Adira immediately spilled out a lie, "See if he needs some help. Or some sleep."
"Oh well I know he's in his office." He informed them, "Just seen him coming from the cafeteria with a cup of coffee a few moments ago."
"Thanks." Adira nodded, "We thought maybe he could use some sleep, if he wants it."
"That's nice of you." Kendrick said, "Oh and Dr. Yoshika said Ciras should be okay, is that true?" He asked cocking his head to the side.
"Yeah, at least he should be." Adira answered truthfully, "The blood was drained from his brain, which was the only problem. We just have to keep an eye on him for a few days make sure his heart rate and all doesn't go down."
Kendrick nodded, "And William?"
"He's fine." Adira answered, "Should be up and about in a few days." She smiled.
"Oh, good." He sighed in relief his shoulders dropping.
"Yeah." She responded.
"Well I'll catch you guys later."
"Okay, see ya." Adira and Tyler waved as Kendrick began to walk backwards.
When Kendrick turned his back to them, Adira pushed Tyler towards the hallway they needed. They shuffled into the hallway and quickly made their way down the hallway. They began lightly jogging down the hall passing Dr. Yoshika's office and all the way down to the surgery room.
Once they pushed the doors open to the surgery room, Tyler began going through the shelf that was in the back corner to the right. Adira was confused as she stood in front of the door watching him opening and shutting cabinets and drawers.
Her eyebrows furrowed together, "What are you looking for?" She asked.
Tyler pulled out a folded up a tool roll. He dropped it on the counter and unfolded it. Adira's eyes landed on shiny surgical tools that were revealed in the tool roll. One of her eyebrows shot up in an arch as she watched him examine the tip of the tools.
"Why do you need those?" She asked when he shoved some of them in his pocket.
He looked up at her, "I could use some of these to pick the lock." He finally answered her and went back to examining the tools tips, "They really are good for picking locks especially when all you have are these tools."
Her shoulders dropped down as she stared at him, past events coming back to her, "That explains so much now." She glared at him.
A grinned spread across his face when he looked at her then turned his attention back on the tools. He shrugged when she seen him still glaring at him. He wrapped the roll back up and put it back leaving some other tools out on the counter. He shoved the tools in his pocket and adjusted his shirt to cover the opening of his pant pockets.
"Let's go." He said grabbing Adira's arm on his way by her and pulling her out.
They hurried out the surgical room and down the hall. They had to make it down there and back up by sun rise so no one notice they were down there. They also didn't want James coming down there to find them if he had a schedule for the night as well but hardly anyone was up between the hours when everyone sleeps and sunrise. And if the soldiers were in on it or anyone else then it made it even more dangerous to go down there. Either way, the pair did not need anyone knowing what they were up to nor did the need anyone to know what they were about to find out.
When the two passed the patient's room, Adira paused in her track before walking back in front of the door. Tyler paused as well his eye knitted together as he frowned at her action. He struck Adira gently on her shoulder causing her eyes to flicker in his direction. He lifted his arms almost making a 'w' shape as if to ask her what. She opened the door just enough to peek her head in and take a look inside.
"Hi, Dr. Yoshika." Her greeting was muffled to Tyler but he had heard what she had said.
"Hello." He greeting back, "How can I help you?" He looked up at her with a smile.
"Oh I was just wondering if you needed help." Adira asked, "Or some rest, you know, to get some sleep."
"Oh no." He shook his head, "I'm fine. I just need my coffee." He answered her, "I don't really sleep that much at night anyways but thank you." He added when he saw Adira nodding.
"Okay well goodnight." Adira said with a smile and pulled her head from between the door and door frame.
"Hey, Adira." Dr. Yoshika called out before Adira could shut the door completely.
"Yeah." She answered opening the door slightly for him to see her.
"Tomorrow can you please take over in the afternoon so I could get lunch and maybe rest for a few hours?" He asked his brown eyes staring in her direction.
"Yeah." She nodded, "Sure."
He thanked her, "Goodnight."
With that she closed the door and the two continued on what they were previously doing. Halfway from the entry way to the lobby Tyler had nudged her. When she looked at him, he asked again why she had stopped to talk to Dr. Yoshika. She had explained if Kendrick asked about it at least they wouldn't be lying about checking in on Dr. Yoshika and seeing if he needed help. Tyler only nodded and dropped the subject as they walked out of the hallway and into the lobby.
Kendrick had his back facing them when they shuffled to the staircase. They went undetected through the lobby since the soldiers all were facing forward keeping guard or just talking to each other. None of them bothered to even look behind them.
When the pair got into the staircase, they picked up the pace and jogged down the stairs to the next floor down. Tyler pulled out two small flashlights from his left pant pocket and handed one to Adira. They flicked them on when they stepped into the hall and let the door gently shut behind them. The hallways were completely engulfed in darkness it made it difficult for anyone without a source of light to see through it. The two looked both ways and only a dime blue light shined in one area down the hallway giving the basement even more of a creepy vibe than when the pair was first went down there.
Almost immediately the pair huddled up together side by side and stood that way when they walked over to the hallway they needed. They paused in front of the short hallway and just stared into it. It was completely dark with no source of light what so ever. Without the flashlights, the pair were sure they would have ran into the doors without knowing it since the doors blended into the background and looked as if there was no doors there. The pair flashed their lights in to the hallway creating them a path before they had the courage to begin walking down the hall.
The flashlights created a glare onto the windows of the doors making it impossible to see on the other side so they aimed the flashlights down at their feet. They shoved the door open and stepped in still holding the door and slowly letting it close so it didn't make a ruckus. They made sure to try and not step on any of the bodies as they maneuvered their way past them.
Once they got past the dead bodies in the hall, they jogged to the door James was seen going in. They came to a halt when they stood in front of it and Tyler pulled out all the tools he took from the surgical room. He kneeled to be at eye level with the lock and he went to work while Adira stood watch making sure no one was coming. When a small click was thrown out from the lock, Adira snapped her head down towards the door. Tyler was grinning from ear to ear up at her when he was pulling out the tool out of the lock.
"Got it." He whispered his voice light with accomplishment when he took the flashlight out of his mouth.
He quickly put the tools back in his pocket and gripped the flashlight he had set on the floor so he could have free hands. He stood up and wrapped his fingers around the knob, the flashlight in his right hand flashing towards the door. He looked at Adira, who nodded waiting for Tyler to push open the door. When he did, Adira was the first to step in while Tyler watched the halls making sure they didn't miss a human being. Almost seconds after she entered the room, the sound of plastic dropping on the hard floor rang through Tyler's ears.
He twisted his body to face the room and aimed his light into the room. On the floor was Adira's flashlight that was aimed towards the back wall, where the light shined on a few chains and the light reflected off of something dark on the floor. Tyler waved the flashlight around near the door to see if he could find a light switch. When he does, he flicks it on and he sees something from the corner of his eye. He slowly looked up at what it was and it was a man. His hands were up as he hung from the ceiling and his feet strapped down so he couldn't kick or swing.
Adira took a few steps back almost running into Tyler. Their eyes widen at the sight before them and they stood frozen in their spot as their eyes roamed the room. The man had blood and sweat dripping down his bare torso with visible bruises from head to toe.
Chains rattled fiercely, muffled screams and pleads was the only thing that rang through the room. Men hung from the ceiling, just like the first man Tyler saw was, against two walls- the back and the wall to their left. Most of them were bloody, but not all were awake. Tyler's eye quickly fell on Adira's flashlight and allowed his gaze to follow the light where the dark substances was a puddle of fresh blood and drops continued to fall in the center if it causing a wave of blood to spread out.
He followed the drops of blood up to a man chained like the rest. His head was hanging down letting his brunette hair fell into his face. The blood was dripping from an injury to the face but Tyler couldn't see because of his hair. His bare chest was full of blood and sweat so much it made his body look dirty yet shiny at the same time. New and old cuts crossed his torso- some crossed over each other while others were parallel to one another. Bruises of all size formed around the cuts, on his chest and neck.
The other men looked the same way but some cut looked recent while others looked as if they've been there for a long time. Most of the men were brunettes but only two were blondes.
Their eyes were wide when they saw the two teens standing there staring at them in complete and utter shock. They all had a gag over their mouths as they tried speaking to the teens. They all squirmed around violently making the chains rattle even more. They began screaming and trying to talk to them but their words and screams were muffled by the gags.
"What. The. Hell." Adira muttered as she watched in horror as the men tried their best to either get out or talk to them.
There were pools of blood underneath all eight men that were hanging some were fresh blood while others dried on the hard ground. Adira couldn't find it in her to peal her eyes away even though she wanted to look away so bad. Tyler looked around the room not wanting to look at the men any longer. On the wall opposite to the back wall was a medical trey with knives covered in blood. Next to the trey hanging on the wall was whips stained with blood and other weapons.
When Adira finally was able to pull her eyes away from the hanging and beaten men, she made eye contact with Tyler. Both of them were just as scared as the men hanging. Adira swallowed a lump in her throat and bent down to wrap her shaky fingers around the flashlight. She looked down at it and turned it off before turning her attention back on the men.
"Why would they have men down here?" Tyler asked just above a whisper.
"Most important who knows?" Adira turned her attention back to him.
The two looked over the men again. They still haven't settled down and the others still haven't woken up. From injuries to their torso and face, they weren't going to wake any time soon. Adira noticed that the men's wrist and ankles were starting to bleed more from all the fighting they were doing, the rope and cuffs ripping through their skin.
Adira took in the men one by one starting from the one closest to Tyler.
The man- no older than 30- had dark brown hair, like most of the men, with wide light blue eyes but his dark long eyelashes made them look darker than they really were. He had a scar that went across his strong defined jaw that was just healing. There was no cut scars on his toned light skinned body but there were a few burn marks on his ribs and chest that was just visible to the eye.
The next one just a couple of inches away was another brunette but this one had to be a little over the age of 35. His big brown eyes screamed help and horror to the teens and they didn't miss it. The huge purple swelled left eye did nothing to hide the pain he was feeling. His long lean dark skin body was filled with old scars covered in dry blood. The red and purple thick lined on his neck was hard to cover even his curly locks couldn't cover them.
The third man was one who was unaware of their presence just because he wasn't awake to know and was a little younger than the first but not by much. His lip was busted, his chin filled with blood, which covered the gag that was placed around his mouth and the blood dripped off the gag and onto the floor, and a bruise ran along his cheek all the way to the bottom of his temple. This was had a few tattoos along his neck and his ankle but none of the teens could focus enough to see what they were nor did they care. His ribs were bruised just as much as his face was and his also had deep dark burn marks that couldn't be mistaken for anything else. His legs were full of bruises and deep gashes along his thigh that just stopped bleeding.
The one on the back wall was a blonde young man about the same age as the first had sweat dripping down his chubby face. He looked as if he wasn't harmed but the teens could only see the front of all the men. The only thing the teens notice of any sign of harm was a bruise of a hand print was wrapped around his neck but other than that nothing more. Adira watched as his slim body expanded from every breathe he inhaled and then dropped.
The man after him was a dirty blonde man his hair not going past his eyebrows. Dark circles laid on around his hazel eyes that bore into hers and sent chills down Adira's spine. The tips of his hair stuck to his forehead by his sweat. His thin body had an imperfect scar that started from the center of his collar bone to his upper abdomen. The man had a tribal rose on his inner bicep that caught Adira's attention. His forearm was a long wavy burn mark that was barely healing.
The other two were older men and looked just like the others with the gashes and burn marks all carved into their bodies. One had dried blood and was fully awake but the other was barely able to process what was going on. They both had blood on their gags and blood smeared on their body and on the floor. Both of them had facial hair but one had grey hair medium stubble while the other had full dark full beard.
The last one that Tyler already looked at looked the youngest from the rest of the men hanging. He wasn't older than 25 but not younger than 20. His jet black hair covered his eyes, blood dripping from his pink lips and off his nose hitting the pool of fresh blood below. He was full of tattoos but wasn't completely covered in them. His torso, just like the rest, had cuts that still bleed and bruises that was still forming. His legs bruised so much half of his tattoos where unknown.
"Looks like someone has a type." Adira spoke taking in everything that was similar to the men.
Adira took a step towards one of conscious men before Tyler hissed at her.
"What are you doing?"
"I want to know why they're down here." Adira answered, "Keep watch." She told him and turned back towards the men, "I'm going to take off the gag but you cannot scream or say a word, okay?" She spoke to the first man with wide blue eyes, who stared down at her. "We're not supposed to be down here."
He nodded violently than expected.
Adira hesitantly took a step closer and lifted her arm up ready to take off the gag but was scared too. She continued to take steps closer making sure not to step in the blood. When she was finally able to reach the gag, the tips of her fingers brushed up against the gag before she went to wrap her fingers around the gag to take it off.
"Shit." She heard Tyler curse under his breath but didn't process it.
In a second, she was yanked back by the arm and her fingers slipped off the gag she was about to take off. Tyler locked the door from the inside before pulling Adira out of the room and shutting it. Heavy footsteps could be heard coming down the hall and Adira finally processed what was happening. The two ran down the hall away from the footsteps and turned a corner before they were caught.
Tyler's hand gripped a door knob, twisted it and pushed the door open just in case. The two pushed themselves up against the wall as they heard metal sliding against each other and a bright light illuminating the corner. Tyler and Adira looked at each other and listened closer waiting for a click and a slam to run through their ears.
When it did, they let out a deep breath both of them have been holding. Still staying along the wall, they made their way to the corner and peeked out into the hallway. They didn't want to chance getting caught so they quickly but quietly tipped toe past the door and disappeared down the other hallway. The teens turned on their flashlights so they didn't step in anything that can possibly give them away.
Two days later, Adira sat in Dr. Yoshika's office sitting on a chair next to the door. She leaned up against the back of the seat; her feet prompted up on the green cushion her legs leaning against the metal arm rest. Dr. Yoshika had asked her to take watch again for lunch and Adira agreed. That day she was just sitting there staring at the bottom of the shelf continuously scratching the bottom corner of her lip with her thumb as her index finger lay upon her top lip and her middle finger lingered on her chin.
William woke up from his sleep and was already fixing his bed but Adira was to out of it to notice him. One thing she could not get out of her head was the bloody hanging men down in the basement. The thought of the men squirming so violently it caused them to break the skin on their wrist freaked her out and made so many other questions pop into her head causing her curiosity to bubble up inside her even more.
She continued to let the thought take over her mind as William stared at her his movements going slower. He was trying to get the blanket flat with no creases or bumps so he slides his palm against the blanket. He began talking just to keep the silence from completely engulfing them. He stole a glance at her when she didn't answer him for more than two minutes and all he saw was a girl who was staring off into space unconsciously scrapping skin off of her bottom lip, her eyes filled with emptiness.
"Adira." He called out for the fifth time.
No answer.
"Adira." He repeated, "You okay?" Maybe if he asked a question she will answer.
But still nothing.
He stopped his action completely, stood up straight and cocked his head to the side, "Adira?" Was more as a question of curiosity than confident of knowledge that he knew who he was speaking too but was stronger.
Her unique eyes flickered in his direction. He raised his eyebrows up and stared at her.
"Are you okay?"
All she did was blink at him for a five minutes before actually breaking the silence, "Um-" She thought about it her eyes shifted away from his and her finger no longer scratching at her lip, "Yeah." She nodded.
"You sure?"
"Yeah." She paused, her eyes shifted back to his.
"Come on." He told her, "What's up?"
"Nothing." She shrugged, refusing to tell William about the bloody hanging men that haunted her thoughts.
"Something is wrong." He insisted, "What's wrong?"
She shrugged her eyes flickering to the corner for a second but then looking back at him. He lifted one eyebrow at her and folded his arm across his chest. They sat in silence for just a moment just staring at each other. He let out a sigh and took a seat at the edge of the bed.
"You seem in deep thought." He acknowledged.
She nodded, "Just thinking."
"About?"
She shrugged, "Something."
"Come on tell me." He said, "You could trust me."
Can I? She thought once those words spilled from his mouth
Could she really trust him with the information she just found out? Did he already know about the people in the basement? Was he in on the whole thing? Was William himself a murder, a sadist or just plain evil?
The group couldn't trust anyone in the hospital anymore, not Ella, not Veronica, or William. Everyone was a murder in her eyes as long as she knew those people were down there. Seeing those men confirmed Adira's suspicions about the hospital people. They were not ones that could be trusted. How could she? She didn't go as far to think they were torturing men and murdering them. The only thing she thought was that Ciras was a little lopsided as a leader, putting fear into people and misusing the power he had gained. But now it made sense to her now that she knows.
Adira let out a sigh after minutes of silence. She wanted to know the story behind the men in the basement and if she had to talk about it with someone she guessed it would be William.
"If I ask you something, will you answer honestly?" Adira asked all of a sudden even when it was a stupid question. Who knew if they would answer honestly if someone had asked them? For all they knew they could be lying about that answer too.
He shrugged, "Of course." He nodded.
He waited for her to ask the question but it never did. Her mouth opened to say something but was closed almost immediately afterwards. She shook her head taking back what she was about to ask. Was she really ready to find out the answer? Even though her curiosity ate at her and scratched that subject wanting to learn more, she was more worried whether or not he would be truthful.
What if it was his idea to put them there?
What would happen if he was the master mind behind it and she ask about them only to have her up there too?
Would he put a seventeen year old girl up on the wall and torture her to death? Was he that evil? Or does he not put girls up there and instead just kills them with ease?
The ultimate question and the biggest question that pondered her mind was can he be trusted?
One thing she learned out of her seventeen years of life especially the last six years was that you shouldn't judge a book by their cover. William looked like he couldn't hurt a fly if it did nothing to him. Of course he was able to protect and he must have done some gruesome things to be next in line for the thrown after Ciras. Was that stuff torture grown men and keep them hostage?
She shook her head once again and stood up, "Nevermind." She finally said before walking out of the room.
"Wait." He called after her, "Adira, what was it you wanted to ask me?"
"Nothing." Adira shook her head softly, "Its fine."
"Come on." He pushed, "Maybe I could help? Is there something on your mind that I could maybe help with?"
Adira didn't know whether or not he was being nosing and wanted to find out what secret she knew or was genuinely concerned and wanted to help. He didn't give off a bad vibe when she was around him nor did she feel he was someone who was a threat to her or her family.
She swallowed a lump in her throat and rose her head a bit, "What do you know about the guys in basement?" Her curiosity getting the best of her and it taking on the topic head on rather than running around the bushes, like most people would.
The two came to an immediate halt down the hall. No one was in sight when Adira looked around making sure no one was listening.
At the mention of the men, William's face drained from all color. His breath became shaky and he suddenly froze in place. Adira heard him swallow from where she sat as they never broke eye contact.
He took two deep secret breathes trying not to show her he was fazed by what she had asked, "What?" His head cocked to the side and his eyebrows knitted together.
"What do you know about the men in the basement?" She repeated a lot slower than before.
He looked away from her and to the floor of a door behind her, "What are you talking about? There's no one in the basement." He looked back at her taking a deep breath.
Adira squinted her eyes at him watching him carefully, "A muscular man with tattoos all over his tan skin and jet black hair, what about him?" She watched him carefully, "Do you know someone that fits that description?"
"No." His voice cracked, which didn't go unnoticed, "I would-" His voice cracked again but cleared his throat.
Got ya! She thought noticing the change in his voice, his lack of eye contact and the way his shoulders went back, along with his hands clenching at his biceps tightly before unclenching and clenching again.
She fought back the urge to smirk and narrow her eyes even more.
"I wouldn't know anyone like that." His eyes trailed off as he continued talking to her.
Again silence engulfed them. William avoided as much eye contact with her as possible while Adira continued to stare at him with a blank look. William's breath became shallow but continued to be shaky as he tried his best to control it. Adira let out a sigh after just a few moments of silence. She cocked out a hip and her arms folded over her chest.
"What?" William raised his shoulders and looked away from her for just a second then looked back.
Her palms were pressed together, the side of her index fingers pressed against her lips and her thumbs under her chin. She let out a slow breath wondering what to say next.
"What-do-you-know- about the guys in basement?" Adira asked again slower that time as she stood up, "You said you'll answer honesty so why are you trying to lie?" She addressed him trying to dodge the question.
They stood there in silence both looking at each other. William looked down at Adira, who had her arms still crossed over her chest. She cocked out a hipped and waited for him to answer. She watched as his lips parted as if he was about to speak but the second it opened, it was shut again. He shook his head down at her as if to silently tell her not to talk about it.
Adira sighed after a few more minutes of impatient, "You said you would help and that's what's on my mind, so you lied. You were just being nosy." She turned around and continued down the hall.
Footsteps from behind her rushed towards her, "Wait." He pulled her back by her arm, "You can't-"
She pushed him back immediately but it wasn't hard enough to make him release her, "I need to know if I'm living with a bunch of murderers." She hissed up at him, a speck of red sparked in her eyes, "Am I putting my family in danger?"
He sighed and moved his head side to side making sure no one was there, "Okay. Okay but everything I say right now can only be between me and you."
Adira ripped her arm out from his grip and took a step back. She rewrapped her arms over her chest and waited for him to start talking.
"I want to first know about the guy who was executed point blank in the back of his head." She spit out before he could start explaining.
She saw his Adam's apple bobble up and down indicating he swallowed. She saw how nervous he was to talk but her fear for her family overshadowed his nervousness.
"Okay yes he was shot in the back of his head-" He started.
"Why?" She interrupted him.
His lips were pulled between his teeth, "Because of Ciras." He sighed quickly, "Ciras didn't want him around anymore." He whispered as quietly as possible, not even wanting Adira to hear.
"What do you mean?" Adira voice became deep, "Why?"
"No." William shook his head waving his arms in front of him, "I can't talk about this with you. No, I can't." He turned to go back to Dr. Yoshika's office.
Adira grabbed him by his arm, "William." She pulled him back to face her.
When she let go, he fell backwards his back hitting the wall, leaning up against it. He threw his head back hitting his head into the wall but he didn't care. He let out a big deep breath and looked at the teen girl staring at him.
"He was a threat." William finally admitted, "But only to Ciras." He began to just spill everything, "The man was named Jim. He was one of the soldiers from the school that helped us get out when the infected took over the school. He was the actual leader of our group and Ciras didn't like that." His voice got quieter and his face became closer to hers, "Once we got here, Ciras made it a promise to get rid of him. He made sure Jim wasn't-"
The sound of footsteps coming down the hall interrupted the discussion. William turned his head and glanced to his right, in sight was a skinny male soldier walking towards them. The two separated as the soldier got closer allowing him to pass by. The soldier greeted the two with a smile and a hello and continued on his way. Adira and William gave him a small smile and a nod in reply. William watched as the soldier was out of ear shot before he continued.
"He made sure Jim wasn't the one with the ideas. Every idea Ciras had, had been because of Jim. Ciras didn't have an idea in his head, he got them from Jim. Jim would tell him what to do and Ciras would act as if it was his and tell the people what to do as if Jim didn't order him to tell us." He breathed.
"I know Jim was killed because...." He hesitated to tell her. Afraid of what she might label him as. "I was the one who pulled the trigger." He finally admitted, his eye closed as he spoke.
"He was threatening to kill Eve and me if I didn't. I didn't want anyone to get hurt." His voice was full of guilt and apologetic. "I knew if he killed me and Eve then he would just make up some story and no one would know the truth. And Ciras would just get someone else to kill Jim for him and I didn't want to go out knowing what I knew. I couldn't just leave knowing they are so clueless; they need someone who will protect them and I thought I could if I stayed alive and did what Ciras told me."
"Why didn't you just tell Jim about Ciras?" Adira questioned.
"I couldn't because Jim was already tied down in the basement." He answered her. "I was put on the spot right when I walked in to that room and I had to make a choice right then and there."
There was a long pause between the two as Adira watched William carefully. Eyeing every body movement he made. When he began talking again she listened very carefully for any hints of being deceived.
"Ciras is just a drunken soldier." William sighed leaning back and hitting his back against the wall with a thud, "The only reason he was able to come with us was because he was a soldier and half of us thought it was a good idea. He had guns and knew where the weapons were at the school."
"If you don't like Ciras as a leader, why don't you just leave or over power him?" Adira asked.
"Because half of the soldiers are corrupted, just like Ciras, and would refuse to give that up." He answered. "I stayed being the co-leader because I refuse to let any of the other guards become leader and take over this group. Half of those men can't even protect themselves against a turtle, none the less running leaches. They don't even know how Jim died. Ciras made up the excuse of he got attacked by bitters in the basement."
"No one ever questioned it." His voice became softer. "They just all went with it."
"Where does James come into this?"
Pushing himself off the wall, he got in her face, "You stay away from him." William almost yelled at her.
He took a deep breath and sharp pains in his ribs made him take a step back. His hand went to his side as he bent over. Adira quickly held on to him making sure he didn't collapse on the floor right then and there. She mumbled an 'Are you okay?' when he wrapped his arm over her shoulders. She looked up at him, her face only inches from his face, and the tip of her nose grazing his cheek. His face was scrunched up in pain.
"Let's get you back in to the room." She whispered, and wrapped her arm around his waist working her way back to the room with William leaning against her.
William was seated on the edge of the bed where he held an ice pack to his ribs. Adira was going through the medicine cabinets looking at all the medicine that was there. She went through every drawer until she found the bottle she thought would be easier to find. She tilted the bottle over and shook it until two pills rolled on to her palm. She went over to William, holding out the two pills and a cup of water that was sitting on the counter she had placed there when they came into the room.
"Here" She mumbled. He placed the ice pack down and took them from her. "This should help with the pain."
He tossed the pills in his mouth before gulping the whole cup of water down. He felt the pills hit against the back of his neck as the cold water sent shivers down his spine as it ran down his throat. He whispered thanks and let out a deep sigh.
The room would have been completely silent if it wasn't for the heart monitor constantly beating every second. William looked up from the cup he held in his hand and gazed at Adira from across the room. Her head was down as she scanned the tiled floor looking at the pattern of each tile. She noticed some of the tiles were cracked in some areas from all the wear and tear. He noticed bites of hairs that were darker flowed down in certain areas, like highlights, but as her hair fell off her shoulders, the dark strands blended well with the rest of her hair as if they were never there.
She lifted her head and looked to her right at the bed Ciras laid in. William moved his gaze to a different place afraid she might catch him staring. No matter how hard he tried to focus on something else in the room his ocean blue eyes found their way back over to her. His eyes flickered downwards to her feet where she swung her foot over her other foot then made a half circle back. He watched as her shoulders began to slump. He began to realize her body relaxing just by her watching her own leg being swung.
"Feeling or sight?" William's voice cut through the air.
She shot her head up at the sudden noise. Her face twisted in confusion and she tilted her head.
He nodded to her leg, "The feeling of swinging your leg or the sight that relaxes you." He repeated clearly.
She shrugged, "Don't know." She answered. "The sight is distracting and makes the feeling become numb. But I could feel my popping every time I swing my leg back and forth and that makes it feel weird."
He nodded. The room went silent again. He didn't know what to say to her or how to keep a conversation going especially one after the information he had just told her.
"So..." He began.
"I'm leaving." She spilled. She locked eyes with him.
"What?" Was all he could say even when he heard her.
"I'm leaving." She repeated and pushed herself off the wall she was leaning against, "Tonight."
"What?" He repeated, "Why?"
"My family's safety comes first." She answered bluntly, "I'm not going to keep them in a place where I cannot trust the people running the place."
"We can't stay here."
She had already pulled the door open when he called out, "Wait."
The door slammed shut before he got up, "Adira!" He yelled out for her as he pulled open the door.
"Adira!" He repeated as he watched her make her way down the hallway trying not to look in such a rush.
Upstairs, Chad and Tyler had been engaging in an intense game of Jenga that a kid, Jade had met, lend them. It was a way to pass the time and keep from being bored. The whole Jenga tower was untouched at the bottom as Chad and Tyler refused to pull a block from there not wanting to make the tower fall over. The two boys were at eye level with the tower as each of them took turns pulling a block.
Madison watched from the single couch with her knees stuck to her chest as Tyler dared to take a block further down than usual. Madison shook her head in disapproval. Chad smirked already thinking Tyler was going to lose the game. The tower tilted and shook slightly with every pull Tyler took with the block. Every time he seen the tower swayed his eyes would flicker up and he would stop pulling for that second then continue. The block was quickly pulled out when it only touched the edge of the other blocks surrounding it. The tower tilted way too much for Tyler's liking and his eyes widen.
"No. No. No." Tyler straightened himself up and put his hands in front of him, inches away from the tower, praying it wouldn't fall over.
The tower stopped in its place but was still tilted towards Tyler.
"Yes!" Tyler hissed pulling his fist back near his stomach, "Alright. We good."
Madison glared at the tower for being so stupid. Chad leaned back with a disappointed sigh. Chad took his turn taking an easy block from the top instead of going any lower. Tyler, on the other hand, went for another block on the bottom. The only difference, this block was going through the center, right next to the previous one he took out and wiggly in its place.
While Tyler focused on getting the piece out, Madison and Chad watched in anticipation. Without knowing it, the two leaned closer in on the game. The piece was only inches out and the tower was still standing. When Tyler saw that, he pulled it out even more. As soon as the block was out from under one block, the tower collapsed.
"Yes!" Both Madison and Chad cheered.
"Shit." Tyler mumbled with the shake of his head, "Got too cocky."
Madison laughed in mockery, "Suck-ahh." She shoved Tyler out the way, "My turn."
Chad just sat there- across from Madison- and laughed. The three picked up the pieces that fell to the floor and set them back on the table. Chad began to reconstruct the Block Tower with a smug smile on his face.
Moments after the tower was rebuilt and they started playing, the door burst open. "Come on. We have to go."
Adira burst through the door and walked to the bed, where she pulled their backpacks from underneath. The trio jumped at the immediate sudden noise and looked up at her to see she was already packing their bags.
"Awe." Madison cried, "I just started playing."
Adira tossed Tyler and Chad their bags, "Well now we have to go."
She opened hers and dumped the ammo on the bed next to her handgun. She held the gun in her hand when the magazine popped out and landed in her palm. She set the gun down and began loading up the gun. Tyler and Madison looked at the gun confused.
"Where did you get ammo?" Madison asked from the floor, her body twisted around so she could see just the gun.
"From Ryan." She answered, "When we went on the run, they forgot to take their stuff back." She added with a smirk.
The sound of the magazine clipping in place echoed through the room. She did the same for another hand gun she had that the hospital people didn't notice either. She walked up to Tyler and gave him the gun.
"But..." Madison said, "I just started playing."
Adira took a step towards the coffee tab and leaned forward. She tapped the Jenga tower with the back of her free hand and it fell, crashing to the floor with a heavy glass sound. "Oops." She shrugged, "Now you've lost. We have to go."
The three of them got up and tossed their bag over their shoulders. They left the room and before they made their way down the stairs, Adira grabbed Dan and Richie's bag from their room. On their way down, Dan and Richie with Jade were walking up the stairs laughing.
When they saw the others, their eyes twisted in confusion. Adira ran into them shoving their backpacks into Dan's chest. She pushed them gently down the stairs hoping they didn't fall.
"We are leaving." Was all Adira told them.
Dan gripped his and Richie's bag as they rushed down the stairs. Whatever questions they had could wait until later. Adira seemed too rushed and worried for them to ask her questions.
Adira was in the lead when they got to the lobby floor and walked out of the staircase. People looked at them confused as they saw the teens were already packed. The group maneuvered around the crowd of people in the lobby trying to get to the front doors. At the same time, James came running out of the middle hallway where Dr. Yoshika's office is. Everyone, who noticed him first, were startled and looked at him as if he's gone mad.
His eyes scanned the room before him looking for certain pairs. His eyes locked with the only moving people in the room while the others were too shocked to move. They were half way to the front door when he caught sight of them and yelled out, "Hey!" He stomped his way towards them. "Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"Anywhere but here." Adira said loud enough for him to hear when he caught up to her, "We're leaving."
"You can't leave." His voice boomed through the lobby making everyone pay attention.
"Says who?" She questioned. Aggravation covered her voice.
"Says me." He gripped her arm so hard she twists around.
Eve was coming out of the third hallway when she saw James grip Adira. "James." She called out.
She pushed back with her free arm and pulled her other arm free from his grip, "You can't keep us here, if we don't want to." She dared look him straight in the eyes.
Tension began to pour into the room as they just stared at each other with great intensity. People looked on as the argument started getting heated. She whipped around and motioned for her group to continue, leaving James in his spot. Eve zigzagged around the on lookers until she was at the front of everyone. She watched as James made a move towards Adira as she headed for the door.
James let out a deep growl as his face scrunched together in anger. Just like Ciras, he wasn't about to let some little girl push him around and make him look weak. That was the last thing he wanted his fellow survivors to see. He had to do something to make her listen to him and reclaim the authority he thought he lost right there.
"You are not leaving!" He yelled at her but she didn't listen.
"I beg a differ." She responded without even turning around. "Give me one good reason why we have to stay here." Her voice was louder than she wanted but she couldn't help it.
"We saved you." James replied. "We took you in and you owe us."
She shook her head. Owe you? She thought but let out a slight chuckle that wasn't filled with humor.
It was more stiff and a more 'yeah right' type of chuckle. Madison and Tyler only heard that type of chuckle a few times but still knew what type of chuckle it was.
"No." She twisted around looking at him. "I don't owe you anything. Neither does my group owe you anything." She pointed out Carrie from the crowd, "Did you forget we were the ones who saved Carrie's life?" Her eye brows were raised, "Or how about the fact that you were threatening to kill me?"
"It's protocol!" James replied, "We thought you were bite."
"Even after my group told you people I wasn't bite?" At this point, she was raising her voice. "My group and I are leaving and there is nothing you could do about it."
But she was wrong.
She turned around and took a few steps towards the door only a few feet away. Just like her group, she stopped in her tracks when she felt metal touch her head. She identified the metal as the barrel of a gun. Her thoughts were confirmed when she heard three little sounds indicating the gun had been cocked.
