Chapter 32
They had gotten out of the city by the time the sun had began to rise. The wind was blowing through the survivor's hair as the cold air hit their exposed skin sending Goosebumps up their arms and down their backs and the tiny hairs in attention stance. By now they were all sitting down in the trunk, their weapons either on their laps or next to them leaning against side of the truck. Some were still wide awake, others so close to falling asleep while the rest were already asleep.
The road they were on was deserted: no buildings, no cars nothing but sand and a few dead plants. Out on the horizon there sat a bright yellow circle known as the sun, an orange and red line outline the top of the sun. Above that was light calm blue that slowly faded into a dark shade of blue with a few more lasting stars.
As they got closer to the building they could see the familiar cream colored building. It had two drive ways with an island in the middle separating the exit and entrance. There were people lined up with guns, which looked as if they were acting as soldiers on both sides of the drive way, nodded to the driver and the fully awake survivors. They looked around for any sign of danger but there was none.
The first building was cream colored with clear glass windows. In front of that building was a long curved rectangular open parking lot. There was a white rectangular roof that gave the automatic sliding front doors some shade and was kept up and steady with two squared pillars. On the rectangular roof was writing on the side that read Utrena Hospital.
The island was separated just a little, enough for a vehicle to turn into the parking lot if needed, but the truck kept going. It wasn't a completely straight drive but only had a few curves in it. The main drive way ran along the side all the way to the back of the first building sitting in front.
The truck kept going where they could see another building. This building was in the shape of a V and a cylinder shape building, made from glass, in front of one of the legs: Out front was a steel shield roof held up with four concrete pillars in the center, behind that was four tall trees with plants at their feet while more sat in the back, between the V shaped building.
The building was the same cream colored building with clear glass windows as the one in the front, except this one was much taller. On the other side of that building was another building but this one wasn't the same crème color, stretched out and wasn't in the shape of a V; instead, it was a tall grey building with multiple stories high. It was used as extra parking space for the hospital that was not needed with all the parking spaces it had on the ground.
The truck stopped in front of V shaped building and the survivors woke up the people that were sleeping while others just got up.
"We're here." Ciras announced making Adira, Tyler and Madison lift their heads to look around.
People started getting out of the truck as soon as they found out it was in park. Adira and her group got up from their seats and made their way off the truck. Chad helped Adira off the truck while Madison and Tyler just hopped out.
"This way." Ciras told Adira and her group, "We have more survivors here that you guys could meet."
They walked under the steal shield roof all the way to the spinning doors. Inside was light up and the group could see people walking inside. The people looked as if they haven't been outside in a while. They were all clean no dirt or infected blood on their clothing or skin. They didn't look to be terrified of what was on the outside or what could happen. They looked like nothing happened to the world. Like there isn't flesh eating monsters just outside attacking others.
Adira and the others walked in all pairing into two in order to get through the doors. Once in, they stood behind Ciras as everyone looked at them in curiosity.
"You found others." A woman around her mid-twenties to mid-thirties said sounding happy and surprised as she walked up to Ciras.
Ciras hummed and nodded.
"Where did you find them?" The woman asked.
"They were walking around in the city." He shortened it up, "Let them get some rest before you start scaring them, would ya'?" He told her noticing she was grabbing Tyler's face and examining it.
"Ella!" Another woman much older than the first called out to her shuffling her away, "Leave these poor kids alone. Go help Ryan in the kitchen." She was carrying folded up clothing and shower necessities on top and some shoved in between the each two piece of clothing.
"But-"
"No buts now go." She shooed the young woman away, "I know you like people and get excited when new survivors come around but we can't be doing that." She told the woman before turning back to the group as Ella shuffled away disappointed.
The women smiled up at the kids her young green eyes sparkled between the wrinkles around her eyes, "Hello, sorry about Ella we haven't really gotten new people here for a while so. My names Veronica how are you all? You guys look like you could use some cleaning up to do." She smiled at the dirty looking kids, "Oh my... Well lucky for you we have clean clothes for all of you with toothbrushes and soaps and others." She handed them a stack of clothing.
"I'll take their clothing." Tyler told her as she gave Tyler his clothing.
"Oh." She looked over at Chad then Adira and noticed how they were covered in nothing but the blood of an infected, "Dear we need to get you two cleaned up." She scrunched up her face in disgust before motioning the kids to follow her as she walked away from them, "Come on I'll show you to your rooms."
"I could do that." Ciras immediately stopped her looking cautiously at Adira.
Veronica hushed him and brushed him off, "None sense I could do it. You go check on everyone else especially the soldiers."
"Is there something wrong with the soldiers?" Ciras asked curiosity covered his voice, his eyebrows pulled together.
"The two little punks, Jared and Tommy, were at it again." She told him disapprovingly, "Those fools are this close-" She put her thumb and index finger up almost touching them together, "to attracting those things over here. Five of the monsters crawled over here while the two were arguing and everyone was too busy trying to pull them apart they almost got close to killing us. Luckily Ella, Bill and Angel came out and shot those things dead or we all would have been dead."
Ciras sighed, "Alright I'll talk to them."
"You better." She pointed her index finger at them, "Those punks are going to get us in some serious trouble and I will not have that around these folks. You either gets rid of them have them get along or I am taking Ella and my grand babies and take our chances on our own."
"No." Ciras told her, "No need for that. We need you here. I don't want anyone leaving its not safe out there on your own especially the youngsters. I'll handle them."
"Get to it then." She ordered him, "I could take care of them." She motioned to Adira and her group.
"Yes, ma'am." He nodded to her and turned around to look at the teens, "Supper should be ready when you guys get cleaned up and settled. Veronica here will help you with anything you need." With that he scrabbled away to find the soldiers he needed to talk to immediately.
Veronica continued showing the group to their rooms, which they took the stairs to the seventh level. They took a step into the hall way where there was four elevators two on each side. They walked past the elevators and into the hallways where more people were walking in different directions. The people smiled at Veronica and carried on their way.
It only took a few minutes for Veronica to get to an empty room and unlock it. She pushed the smooth light brown door open before stepping back and motioning for the group to walk in.
"This will be your rooms for tonight." Veronica spoke with a smile, "Or longer, if you decide to stay."
"Thank you." Chad nodded to her before they all entered the room.
The room wasn't too large or too small. There was a large medical being in the center with blue covers and white pillows neatly put together. The walls were a cream brown color on top then transferred into a deep brown color to the bottom. Across from the bed with two night stands next to it on each side was a wall that was half way indented with a square section that held three brown couches pressed against each wall and a small round table between them. Across from the door was a large glass window that looked out to the horizon and the first building that is closest to highway.
"This is a nice hospital." Chad gawked as he looked around.
"Rich area." Adira commented nonchalantly, "Rich hospital."
It was definitely a different looking hospital than what Chad, Adira, Tyler and Madison are used too but it wasn't surprising to Adira, Tyler and Madison. With their half their family working in everything medical it wasn't anything new to them especially since half their life's was spent mostly in hospitals either in the break rooms they got left in after school or going in for checkups that they had to get.
Everyone who had a backpack set them down on the couches and began to stretch causing some of their backs to crack. Veronica walked in to the room and stood next to Adira and Chad as Chad refused to let go of Adira. It wasn't because he was worried for her safety or anything, it was just because they weren't thinking to let go. Veronica gave them time to look around and take in everything before she decided to speak to Adira.
"You could take a shower before you see the nurse for that injury." She pointed to the wound on Adira's thigh that was wrapped up in her blood and the infected black blood covered gauze, "I could show you where the showers are if you'd like. The bathroom in these rooms only consists of a toilet and sinks so you'd have to use the public showers."
"That's fine, thank you." Adira sweetly spoke with a smile and a nod.
"You are oh so welcome miss." Veronica smiled, "So I'll let you get comfy. The showers are continuing going down the hall to the right go down a little more and if you take another right that leads to a door that should be the women's showers." She explained to them, "The men's showers are keep going the same direction except instead on turning to the first right you go past three more hallways turn right then left it should be a door."
The group nodded at the same time without saying anything.
"If you need anything else comes find me, I should be still up on this floor, and I'll help you, Alright?" She sweetly spoke with a sweet smile.
"Alright." Richie spoke with a smile.
"Thank you." They all said at the same time and all with a kind smile.
With that she left the group alone and closed the door behind her.
I don't know if you notice but the lobby of the hospital isn't described in this chapter and I am sorry for that I am trying to find the right words to describe this place so you see what I see. I will re-do this chapter and add some details about the hospital lobby later on.
Almost done with this book just a few more chapters. I cannot believe I am almost finished with my first book and I am nervous and excited all in one.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed.
