Chapter 26
The sun is almost fully in the sky light shining through the blinds. The groups is already up, grabbing all their bags, packing them with things they may need later on or the next few nights. Adira zips up her bag, stands up straight and throws her bag over her shoulder.
"Ready to go?" Adira asks as she turns around and looks at everyone zipping up their bags and throwing it over their shoulders.
"I am." Madison answers almost immediately, "Let's go."
"Yeah, let's go." Chad says walking past her and into the hallway.
Richie and Dan follow in suit while Adira waits for Tyler to zip up his bag. When he finishes, he jogs a little to get to where Adira is waiting for him. The three of them walk out of the room and towards the staircase where Chad is holding the door open for them watching as they walk down the hall and pass him.
They push open the door and step out into the sunlight but as they do, they immediately groan and cover their eyes to block the bright sunlight from blinding them.
"I am officially blind." Madison comments as her hands are covering her eyes.
The group takes a look from side to side looking at everything around them. It felt weird to be walking out during the daylight and no one rushing past them trying to get to work or school. It was empty just like the road. It felt like they haven't been outside in the sun for months. Adira stretches her arms and back as the sunlight kisses her skin.
"Come on." Adira says with a sigh while walking in the opposite direction of the freeway.
The group follows her deeper into the city and looks around as if they have never seen the city before. Adira put all her focus on signs that would give her any clue as to where Jane might have been or is hiding not wanting to miss a thing. She wanted to find Jane just as fast as finding Chad's siblings and the family they were once with. She couldn't get the thought of it being her fault out of her head but tried to get the guilty thoughts out of her head by telling herself everything Chad told her last night. While she was thinking about Jane and her guilty thoughts everyone else was thinking about how different the city looks.
They never saw a city so empty and deserted. It was weird and the amount of humans really did make a big difference in cities. Adira was the only one who didn't notice the difference only because she was not for cities or being around others. The only time she was around the city was when she visited her aunts with her mother but they rarely visited. The rest have been in the cities plenty of times and could notice the little things that Adira would not notice.
"Should we check the buildings?" Tyler walked next to Adira and slightly looks up at her.
"I don't know." Adira stops and looks at all the high buildings surrounding them.
Would a little girl run into a building not knowing whether or not those monsters would be in there?
Adira asked herself as she lifts her head up high just to see almost the top of all the buildings. If she was Jane's age she would run and won't stop. Just like a kid, she would figure they are big, scary and she would want to be as far away from those things as possible no matter the extent she had to go. She would stop. Stopping means giving them time to get closer. Stopping means giving them a chance to catch her and harm her.
Would a little girl take the risk if it means putting a few doors between the monsters and her?
She wouldn't, but not everyone is like her. Everyone is different in their own way. Everyone does things differently when they are scared and maybe Jane will take the risk if it buys her more time. Adira snaps her head to look at Chad, who brought her out of her own head.
"What do you think is wrong with those things?" Chad asked her as he stared her down, "How are they able to stay alive after their heads have been smashed and their brains have been destroyed?"
"I don't know." Adira shook her head not breaking eye contact, "Imagine how many of those things we left behind and are still walking around."
Chad walked up to her and crossed his arms over his chest as he took a deep breath. Adira looked behind Chad to see Tyler and Madison looking through the windows of a building. Her eyes flicker back to Chad.
"Do you think a little girl would run into a building?" Adira asked the question she couldn't answer for herself.
Chad looked back at her and tilted his head to the side, "I don't know." He shrugged.
Adira walked past Chad, their shoulders colliding causing him to move to the side. She walked to the two teens that turned around just as she stood right in front of them.
"Madison, would you run into a building?" She asked Madison, who was looking up at her as she spoke, "If you were being chased by those things." She added when Madison raised an eyebrow at her.
"Well..." Madison trailed off and started looking around trying to think if she would or not, "I want to say yes but then again I would be too scared being trapped in one if those things are in there too."
Adira nodded, "Okay." She wasn't sure whether or not she should check the buildings too just in case Jane was in one of them just hiding.
Madison wouldn't run in a building because she would be too scared of being trapped and she as close to the other girls as possible. The only thing is Madison was six years older than Jane was. Is that the closest Adira would get to answering her own question on checking the buildings as well?
Maybe she's on the first floor. Adira thought she wouldn't make her way to the other floors.
Adira through her head back and let out a breath through her mouth. Kids weren't the smartest when they're scared and she knew that. But she didn't know Jane and that's the reason she's having so much difficulties deciding whether or not to check them. It frustrated her that she's been protecting a girl she didn't even know that much about, especially how she thinks.
Adira pulled her head back up only to smash it against the wall of the building Tyler and Madison was just looking in.
This would be a lot easier if you were like every other teenage girl. Adira cries out silently in her head why couldn't you be just like every girl your age? This is what happens when you grow up around a bunch of boys. This is a down fall to having brothers.
She really did think if she was like other teenage girls her age getting into Jane's mind would be a big help; but, she isn't and she couldn't.
"You want to check the buildings?" Chad asked as he put a hand on her shoulder.
"I don't know." Adira answered turning around and leaning on the wall her head once was, "I don't want to put Tyler and Madison in danger by doing so but I want to find Jane."
"We could check the first floor only." Chad offered, "I don't think she will go up any further."
"I wouldn't." Madison remarked.
"But she is a little girl. I don't think a little kid her age has that kind of thought process or understanding of the dangers around here." Adira commented.
"Well let's check out the buildings first floor only." Chad told them as Dan and Richie walked up to them.
"What are we doing?" Dan asked as Richie and Dan positioned themselves between Adira and Chad.
"Checking the first floors of all the buildings for Jane." Chad answered, "Maybe she ran in one of them for safety or something."
"Do you think a little girl would go into a building?" Dan asked looking at Chad.
"Adira asked the same thing." Chad answered.
"She's a little girl, Dan." Richie informed him, "Of course she will."
"So believe she could be in any of these buildings hiding?" Adira asked pushing herself off the wall and pointing to all the buildings around them.
The corner of Richie's lips turned upside down as he nodded at her, "Yeah, I do."
Adira nodded, "Okay then we check the buildings." Her eyes found Chad's but soon they flicker to Richie.
She was satisfied that someone actually gave her a simple answer. It helped her make up her mind very easily so she quickly came up with a plan.
The quicker the better. It gives them more of a chonce to finding Jane. She knew every minute counted especially now.
"We got two options..." Adira started getting everyone's attention, "One we split into two groups..." She trialed off as she looked at Tyler and Madison and soon shook her head, "Never mind, we stay together. We check the first floor only and we stay close." She looked at everyone, "We get into a line and move forward checking every door and every hall, if there is one."
"What was the second option?" Dan asked out of curiosity.
"Who cares we are not doing it." Adira told him as her eyes flickered to him.
"I care. I want to know." Dan told her.
"I want to know to." Tyler speaks up, "It could be a good idea."
"I was going to say we split up take two buildings at a time." Adira tells them, "Three go into one while the other takes another building."
"That would be faster." Richie told her.
"It's also the most dangerous." Adira retorted, "I am not splitting up again. We already lost Jane for splitting up."
"We should do that." Dan said pushing that idea, "Richie is right it's faster."
"Did you not just hear me?" Adira stood straight up, "It's also the most dangerous. We staying in a group are the safest ways. We could look out for one another."
"Do you want fast or safe?" Dan asked her, his voice becoming more aggressive and Chad took notice, making him stand up straight.
"I want both but I am not going to put them in danger." Adira pointed to the two younger teens staring at them, "I'm thinking about everyone's safety and that is why staying in a group is safer."
Everyone could feel the tension between the two as they continued the argument. Chad was watching Dan really closely that it made him almost look like a creep; he was ready to snap his arm if Dan made a move to harm Adira whether he just slaps her or attacks her. He wasn't the only one who was watching him. Tyler was paying close attention as well and on guard just as much as Chad was. Tyler looked up at Chad to see he was only focused on Dan.
"We could find her faster in two groups."
"We could find her if you shut up and stop arguing with me." Adira told him as he stepped forward trying to intimidate her into going with his idea, "We are staying in a group."
She didn't coward away or give in like he wanted her to; instead, she stood there not showing any sign of giving up. It was really getting on his nerves especially since it was a girl, who was a foot shorter than him. He didn't appreciate the fact that everyone especially four guys were taking orders from a girl, but he was the only one who felt that way.
He clenched and unclenched his fists; the more she took charge the more it was pissing him off even more. Adira took notice in his fist and knew she was getting on his nerves and upsetting him. She took note in the fact that he got angry very easily especially since she hasn't been in charge of them for long.
Before he made a move, Richie stepped in pulling Dan away from Adira not wanting them to get into a fight. Adira took a look at Chad and walked to the building down the street behind the group. Chad jogs up to her in the middle of the street in case she wants to talk.
"I care for their safety too." Chad starts the conversation hoping she doesn't turn on him too, "I also care to find Jane as fast as possible."
"Do you think we should split up?" Adira asked coming to a stopped and turned to him, "Should we check two buildings at once?" If she was going to get someone's input it would be Chad's.
He looked around and took deep breath thinking about her question, "I think we should. It is faster and Madison should stay with you. You pay more attention to her than any of us." He puts both hands on her shoulders and rubbed her arms trying his best to calm her down, "Calm down, okay?"
Adira took a deep breath, "Okay." She nodded.
Chad patted her on her shoulder and the two walked back to the group, Adira knew what she was doing and how they were going to do it.
"Okay." Adira breathes out, "We'll have two groups one in a building." She announces making everyone look at her.
"What?" Richie asked even though he had heard what she said.
"Except Richie and Madison come with me." Adira tells them pointing to Richie and Madison.
"What?" Dan questions, "No, Richie is with me."
"No ifs, ands or buts." Adira tells him, "Chad and Tyler is going with you."
Dan was about to argue but Richie stops him by stepping in front of him, "Alright then. Where should we start?"
"The two building back there." Adira turned half way to point to the buildings a building away.
"We should have a look out." Chad offered, "In case we see someone coming or those sick monsters. The lookout could warn us."
"But who?" Adira asked.
"I'll do it." Tyler quickly took the opportunity, "I could do it." He reassured Adira, who was giving him a look.
"I'll do it too." Madison joins in, "I kind. Don't. Want to go into a building." She admitted.
"I could watch her." Tyler tells her, "We could hold the doors open while you four search the buildings."
"Yeah. I could look one way while Tyler looks the other." Madison chirped, "We could watch each other's backs."
Adira looks at Chad to see what he thinks and all she gets was a shrug with a nod, "Okay then." She agrees earning a 'yes' from Tyler and Madison, "Come on, I want to get this done as quickly possible."
Dan was someone Adira did not trust. She wouldn't trust him to protect and look out for Tyler if she or Chad wasn't there with him. She knew Chad would be able to take Dan easily. If Chad had trouble then Tyler would have his back and make sure Chad is okay and all. She didn't mind having Richie only because she had more trust in him than Dan. She didn't think she had to watch out for him. She had trust that Richie would have her back and also try his best to keep Madison safe. After she seen how he treated Jane, she didn't have to have second thoughts on whether Richie would harm Madison.
The group begins to walk towards the buildings they plan to go search. Adira kept an eye on Madison as she walked by her. Before she could go any further, Adira grabs her arm and yanks her back, startling Madison.
"Don't run." Adira orders her.
"Adira, relax nothing is going to happen." Madison told her.
"Don't run." She repeated, "Do you hear me?"
"Adira, I'm old enough to know not to run." Madison rolled her eyes.
"You are also young enough to get scared." Adira told her, "Don't even try to run."
"I am not a little kid." Madison argued ripping her arm out of Adira's death grip and tried walking away.
Adira grabbed her by the back of her shirt collar and yanked her back, "Don't. Run." She said more aggressive and demanding.
From the outside looking in, it looked as if she was abusive to the girl and she knew it but the last thing Adira needed was for another one of her own wondering off or getting lost because they got scared. She didn't want to lose another so she had to make sure Madison understood to not go anywhere but with the group so she pushed the thought of how the scene must look to the others and didn't let it bother her at the moment. Madison took a deep breath.
"I don't see you telling Tyler that." She said lifting her arm up to motion to Tyler.
At that moment, Tyler was walking by and Adira, without looking, grabbed the back of Tyler's collar from his shirt. He was caught off guard and turned his head to look over his shoulder, making a humming sound to indicate he was listening.
"Do not run or wonder off." Adira ordered, "Do you hear me?"
"Yeah." Tyler said nonchalantly, "I was planning on going inside and warn Chad while Madison warns you."
She released Tyler and Madison from her grip and they started walking in the middle of the street, "If it's just one of the sick ones then take it out silently." Adira informed them, "If it's other people warn each other first. Don't call out to them or anything and quickly close the doors and warn us, okay?"
Tyler and Madison both nod at her orders before Tyler opened the door and kept it open while Adira and Madison made their way to the building across the street to the building a little before that building where Richie already had the door open.
"Ready?" Richie asked as Adira approached.
"Yeah." Adira answered, "Stay here and remember watch out and warn your brother of anything." Adira pointed to Madison before pulling out her knives and flicking them open, handing Richie one. She looks at Richie and nods before quickly walking in ready to attack if necessary.
