Chapter 24

At this moment they are all awake surrounding multiple candles that were lit by matches Madison found in one of the drawers and Dan and Richie found candles in the offices on the first and second floor either in the storage room or on the desks in the big main offices. Dan and Richie are sitting next to each other leaning all their weight on one of their arms. Tyler is sitting criss cross next to Richie while Madison is sleeping on the floor between Tyler and Adira and Chad. Adira is sitting between Chad's legs, across from Dan and Richie, their legs stretched out as Chad had his arms around Adira rubbing her arms trying to keep her warm and his head was on leaning itself on her head.

"How'd you survive?" Adira slightly turns her head whispering to Chad.

"I was in school." He quietly answered remembering how he and his siblings escaped death. Remembering every little detail from that day.

The class room was like all the other class rooms: the room was surrounded in posters of the subject that teacher taught –in Chad's case it was geometry- equations everywhere all over the wall with lame jokes, the teachers desk was up front in the left corner and equations written on the white board. Some of the students were paying close attention, girls on their cell phones texting as they hide their cell inside their bags that were in their lap, guys either fooling around with one another throwing paper or whatever they have, other students had one of their headphones in with their heads near the desk as they wrote down notes and solved equations the teacher gave them. Then there was Chad. He was already finished the work the teacher gave him and was drawing in his composition note book. A book he didn't use for school or appointments or cell numbers or anything but drawing.

He drew in it and sometime there was a page that he would just stare at for the simple yet creative drawings that weren't from him but from a certain girl who always took the book from him, refused to give it back and draws on it but never on a different page. She continued to draw on that page and he didn't mind just watching her create something else and adding to the page. At this point into the lecture he found himself flipping to that certain page and looking at the page and all the drawings. He smiled at all the drawings there; once it was fully filled he planned on buying some spray that would keep the drawings from getting ruined or smeared. He just had to figure out what spray it was.

The sudden sound of the fire alarm going off caused everyone to jump. After a few seconds the alarm went off and the intercom speaker came on making everyone look up even the teacher, who had to order for students to be quiet and listen.

"Teachers, sorry for the interruption but at this time the principle has ordered for all teachers to escort their students to the cafeteria. Please we advice all teachers and students in the cafeteria at this time. Again the principle has ordered for all teachers to escort their students to the cafeteria immediately. We will be closing the doors in 20 minutes so please everyone get into the cafeteria. Again, sorry for the interruption, but please at this time we advice all students and teachers in the cafeteria. Thank you."

The lady stopped talking and the intercom turned off. Once the students heard no more they all turned to look at their teacher for guidance. He looked back at all of them before nodding.

"Alright everyone please start heading out in an orderly fashion. No running or pushing." The teacher spoke.

A young girl raised her hand "Do we leave our stuff here?" She asked not even giving the teacher time to call on her.

"Um-" The teacher thought, "I really don't know. This wasn't on the schedule for today so um- If you want yes I would just in case."

The girl set her bag on the floor not feeling the need to carry her bag but Chad packed up his stuff and threw his bag over his shoulder just like some of the other kids did.

"Everyone ready?" The teacher asked looking around at all the students just staring at him, "Alright let's go. Remember orderly fashion. No running or shoving."

With that they all scrambled out the door the teacher staying behind and following the last student out before he locked up his class room. The students merged into the river of students that already began making their way to the cafeteria. Like most students that were walking, Chad's friends found their way to him and started walking beside him.

"Yo, what do you think is happening?" Chad's friend, that was on the left of Chad, with long black hair that covered his eyes asked as if Chad had been with them the whole day.

"Probably a pep rally or emergency drill practice thing." The friend, who was on his right, with black hair that was greased back shrugged.

Chad looked up and looked at his friend to his right and shrugged, "I don't care as long as it gets me out of class and from doing my homework am good."

"Dude, you didn't do your homework for Mr. Gonzalez?" His friend with long hair, Alexander, asked him.

"No." Chad answered with a shrugged, "I was busy." He instinctively looked down and let a smile crawl on his face.

Chad never turned in his geometry homework or actually got close to doing it. It really was a surprise he had the highest grade in all geometry classes. Even the teachers are surprised he was capable of finishing his class work and getting a good grade but not doing his homework at all yet still passes all his tests.

The two boys Chad was between leaned forward and shared an all knowing smile with each other.

"You were busy with Adira, weren't you?" The greaser looking friend, Brian, asked wiggling his eyebrows at Chad.

Chad playfully pushed him away, "Shut up, Brain." He rolled his eyes and looked at him.

As they were walking past an alley, Chad's eyes flicker from his friend, Brian, to a figure behind him. Chad stared at it and squinted his eyes to get a better look at he noticed it was one of the students just standing there at the back of the alley. His face morphed from a happy laughing one to a confusing face. His friends took notice and stopped laughing looking in the direction Chad is looking in to see the same thing.

"What the hell is he doing?" Brian asked.

"Probably one of the pot heads smoking it up back there, who is trying to ditch." Alexander answered.

They all shrugged because that wasn't uncommon in that school. Most kids would use the back areas of the school to ditch knowing that no one could see them. They didn't even have to worry about security or teachers coming back there since there were no cameras and no one went back there but the ditching students. The pot heads would hand out back there just to smoke pot but that was it. Chad wasn't unfamiliar with that area of the school himself only because he from time to time found himself back there with his friends just hanging out but mostly he would try finishing homework only he found important like: social studies and science. Those were his favorite and found them the most important.

Once Chad and his friends, Brian and Alexander, were in that area just hanging out, his friends were sitting on the hill behind the school while Chad was sitting on the concrete floor leaning on the building, listening to music and chatting when they started hearing moaning and kissing noises coming from the side of them. At first they thought it was just the music but when they turned their heads to the right they saw them. Further down was their English teacher and Geometry teacher making out and by the second it was getting pretty heated. Chad and his friend's eyes widen in shock but their grins made it seem pretty entertaining and funny.

By the time they got into the cafeteria it was half full. Teenagers filled the tables while others stood around chatting with their friends or a teacher wondering what was happening. Chad and his friends were standing near the entrance leaning on the wall when a girl walked in coughing. Chad stared at the girl making her way through the crowd coughing non-stop. He watched as other students made their way in and one stood out to him. It was a boy, whose face was smeared in blood, and he was slowly making his way to the center of the cafeteria.

The blonde haired boy with the deepest shades of blue orbs even Chad had to admit his eyes were pretty admirable. It was a shame that they were blood shot and his eyes began to form tears and made it look as if he's crying except for it wasn't tears that ran down his cheeks it was blood. He was holding a napkin that was covered in fresh blood which made Chad look at him very carefully with his eyes narrowed at the poor boy. A growling noise came from his right brought him out of his staring trance and made his friends and him to look to the right to see a boy in all black sitting at the table against the wall as he looks at the table a girl was staring down at him.

The dark cloth boy slowly looked up at the girl but no one could see his eyes due to his long straight hair that hung in front of his eyes covering them. Other kids around that corner watched in confusion as the three boys, Chad, Brian and Alexander, watched as the boy's throat vibrated from the deep growl that made its way out of the boy's mouth. By now the girl was shaking and in shock that she froze in complete fright. The more the kid growled the wider the poor girls eyes grew and she began to take steps back slowly. The boy's hands curled into a fist and his grow grew louder with every step the girl took.

Eventually, the girl got the courage to turn around and quickly walked away zigzagging through the group of student putting as much distance away from her and the growling boy as much as possible.

An ear piercing scream rang through the whole cafeteria making everyone turn to look in the direction of scream, which was near the front of the cafeteria. Teachers began to scream and shout but the three boys couldn't see what was happening so they maneuvered their way through the crowd and stopped when they saw what was going on.

A boy was on the floor his eyes widen and his lips shivering along with his whole body. His breathing became shaky as he crawled backwards his back coming in contact with his friends legs, who all pat him on his shoulder and trying to get him up. They were all looking ahead of them at a girl, who was on the floor stomach down and her head was slowly lifting.

"She tried to bite me!" He screeched pointing to the girl in front of him.

She was pale just like the dark clothed boy except what Chad thought was her veins were pure black instead of blue or green like his. Her eyes were just like the blonde boy with blood stained tears dried on her cheeks except hers were white with black rings around them. The boy she was after was a jock but she was so horrendous looking that even he was mortified to the core along with his friends. She lifts herself up looking as if she was doing push-ups and stares at the boy.

      "Chad!" A voice called out.

Chad turned his head in time to see the blue boy charging after him. Instead of cowering away Chad stood there staring at the boy making his way towards him. The boy collided into Chad's shoulder to which Chad used his hands to shove the boy away from him causing the boy to fall on his butt.

"Look, man, I don't want to get in to anything with you." Chad said holding his hand up as if telling the blonde boy to stop.

The boy begins to growl as he lifts his head up to look up at Chad. Chad took note in how his deep shade of blue eyes was now replaced by complete dark ones. His breathing became heavy as the growl became louder and louder. Eventually, he opened his mouth wide revealing his new sharp teeth and screamed that didn't even sound like something he would be capable of making. A teacher, short and chubby around his mid thirties to mid forties, then pushed through the group of teenagers and stepped into the middle of Chad and the blonde boy holding his arms up as if to keep them separated. He screamed catching the attention of both pale students.

"There is no figh-" The teacher let out a deathly scream as both the blonde boy and the brunette girl jumped on him and began to feed on him.

Chad and his friends jumped back and fell to the floor at the sudden attack in fear and they watched in horror as one of the teachers were being feed on.

"He's- he's eating our Economic teacher." Alexander stuttered in complete shock.

"Get off of him!" A female teacher intervened as she tried to get the two students off the now bloody man, "What is wrong with you children."

It was the biggest mistake of her life. The sick students stopped their feeding frenzy on the poor male teacher and went after her, taking her down too.

By this time Chad and his friends got back to their feet while the students screamed and began to run away as the two sick looking students ripped her apart with their teeth blood spilling everywhere. Students ran up to the doors and started pounding on them screaming for the teachers to let them out. Some teachers were too frozen in shock that they couldn't move while other teachers couldn't get through the terrified teens blocking the doors. The students that weren't pressed against the doors or surrounded by teens just watched in horror as one teacher laid dead on the floor blood gushing out of all his open wounds on his neck, arms, shoulders and chest and the other teacher in the process of being feed on.

Everyone was so focused on getting out that no one saw the blood drain from the male teacher's body. He began twitching first his hands then his feet and even if it was hardly noticeable his eyes began to twitch under his eyelids. Eventually his veins were quickly being replaced by black liquid that dominated and took over the liquid inside the green looking veins.

"Oh my god." Brian breathes out as the bold and chubby teacher sits up.

The Economic teacher finally gets to his feet and raises his head so the students could see nothing but evil written in his eyes. Chad, Brian and Alexander takes a step back as Brain put the back of his hand on Chad's shoulder in fright ready to tap him while Alexander unconsciously took hold of the waist area of Chad's shirt.

The Economics teacher looks straight at Chad and his friends and they slowly begin to take small steps back. Chad heard a big gulp to his right but didn't dare take his eyes off of the menacing looking man before him. Everyone was running around the man yet he paid no attention to them even with them screaming and making so much noise; his only focus was the three boys in complete fear standing a few inches in front of the large crowd still banging on the front doors to let them out.

"Shit. Shit. Shit." Was the only word Brain could process with his mouth with every step the evil man took towards them.

"Chad." Alexander began tapping on Chad's arm rapidly, "Chad- Chad, what do we do?"

       "I don't know." Chad whispers.

"Chad, what do we do?" Alexander shouted at him unconsciously as he began to shake out of fear.

"I don't know." Chad repeated louder and shaking just as much as Alexander and Brain.

Chad and Alexander began to shout the same thing to each other getting louder and louder in fear for their lives as the man began to rush towards them.

"What do we d-" Alexander began.

"I don-" Chad tried answering but Alexander interrupted him.

      "Chad!"

"Move!" Chad yelled and pushed Alexander to the right as he moved to his left allowing the inhumanly teacher pass him by. Chad moved to quick for Brian to process that he ran into Brain causing both of them to fall to the floor. As the man passed the three boys his focus on them left and he was no focused on the teens in front of him. He ran into the group swinging his arms around a girl and bit into her neck causing even more screams around the man and the poor girl. The people around the feeding frenzy moved away and ran somewhere else as some just stayed and continued pounding. Chad and Brian got to their feet once again and took a few steps away from the feeding and looked around.

"Alex!" Chad shouted not being able to see where he pushed his friend due to the amount of panicking and frightened people everywhere.

"Alex!" Brian joined in looking around seeing if their friend got up and was being pushed around or just moved somewhere else but he didn't see him only the people rushing by.

     "Chad!" Someone screamed out, "Brian!"

The two boys looked around faintly hearing their names but they couldn't see and Chad was getting dizzy by the amount of people running around it's like he couldn't figure out which way was what. A tap on his shoulder made him turn to his right to see Brian tapping him and pointing behind them.

"I found him. Alex!" Brain shouted and took hold of Chad's arm as he made his way over to Alexander, who was doing the same.

Chad ripped his arm away from Brian so it could be easier for him to walk and began to push people out of the way. He was so focused on not letting Alexander out of his sight that he didn't even realize he pushed a boy right in the hands of one of the menacing students.

"I know a way out." Chad shouted over the screams to Brian, "We grab Alex and maybe we could get out."

Brian only nodded but didn't look at him in fear of losing sight of Alexander.

"Alex!" Brian shouted as he was a few feet away from Alexander, "Alex!"

Alexander stretched his arm out to his friends when he was even closer to them and Chad took it pulling him towards him. Alex moved through the crowd knocking a few people over in the process but to worried getting to his friends to really care or apologize in the process.

Alexander felt strange not to apologize to someone after you didn't something to them especially knocking someone over. He usually is that kind of guy.

Brian pulled Alex into him just to get his lips to his ear, "Chad knows a way out so we could get out."

      Alexander just nodded.

The trio began to zigzag and shove themselves to the kitchen in the back of the cafeteria. As the passed through the hall way that was meant for the lunch line they see even more students blocking the door that lead out to the patio. They continued moving forward and made their way into the kitchen going all the way to the back. The more they got closer to the back the slower their pace went until it came to a complete halt when they see even more students blocking the door the chiefs and lunch ladies use to take the trash out.

     "Dammit!" Brain mumbled to himself.

"How many students did the teachers shove in this damn building?" Alexander question, "There can't be that many."

     "Now what?" Brian asked.

"Erin!" Chad called out as he walked up to a black haired girl pulling her back by her shoulders.

"Chad!" The girl, Erin, yelled over the crowd when she turned to see Chad standing there behind her, "There is no way out. The teachers locked all the doors." She told him.

"Open it!" A girl screams by the door.

"Do you not see us trying?" A boy yelled back to her as him and his friends tried breaking it down, "There are too many people pushing us. We can't."

"Who does this shit?" Someone else in the crowd yells.

"Come on!" Another voice cried out, "Someone help us. We are going to die."

"Why would they lock this door?" Another frightened voice screamed out.

"We are on lock down, teachers have to lock all doors for our protection, dumbass!" A more angry voice yelled.

"Chad, what are we going to do?" Erin asked completely frightened, "There is no other way out."

Chad looked around rapidly trying to figure everything out. He didn't know any other way out and the ones he did were locked and blocked by a bunch of frightened students.

"Come on." Chad grabbed Erin's arm and pulled her to the right.

"Where are we going?" Erin asked.

"I don't know." Chad truthfully told her, "Keep us away from those.. Those.." He could find the words to describe the inhumanly people or anything to call them so Brian did it for him.

     "Cannibals." Brian finished.

     "Whatever they are." Chad whispered.

A high pitched scream made its way through all four friends' ears, causing them all to look back. There before them they saw two students fall to the floor being eaten by two students that look just like the Economic teacher. More screams for someone to help them erupted through the kitchen along with louder rapid pounding. The rapid chaos caused some students to faint while others squished others in the front.

The image of a person at the end of alley leading behind the school popped into Chad's head for no apparent reason, he just thought about what his friends said about it and the words echoed through his head.

"Probably just a pot head smoking it up back there..."

"Come on!" Chad told them he began to run and motion for them to follow, "I know another way out!"

"That's all the exits, Chad!" Erin yelled, "There are no more."

He raced turning right around a counter and then to the left down a short hall before turning left again.

"Since when has this kitchen been so big?" Brian asked randomly, obviously more focused on how huge the kitchen was then the cannibals that were eating everyone.

Chad ignored him as he looked at all the doors looking for one in particular while everyone questioned him.

"What is this?" Erin asked as she looked around the hall, "Why do they need hall ways in a kitchen?"

"They need a place to keep all the food and clean supplies etc." Chad answered quickly before twisting a knob to one door and it opening with ease, "Yes. Come on in here."

They all shove themselves in the tiny room and Chad shuts the door before walking to the other side of the door ignoring everyone's questioning looks.

Brian and Alexander look around the place seeing shelves and shelves with products and brooms and mops shoved against the corners with buckets thrown anywhere.

"Is this a storage room?" Alexander asked right when Chad pulls down a shelf and knocking it over.

Everyone jumps back at Chad's sudden action and the sudden crash, "What the hell."

"What are you doing?" Erin whispered yelled at Chad.

"There's a window back here." Chad says pulling down tarp revealing a rectangular 14 by 18 in window, "We could get out through here."

"Chad that's too small." Erin told him.

"Give me a screw driver." Chad demanded in a soft tone voice.

     "What for?" They questioned.

"Do you want to get out or not?" Chad hissed unconsciously, "You asked me what to do and I am telling you to give me a screw driver now."

They all kept their mouths closed and started going through all the containers and boxes looking for a screw driver. When one finds it, they hand it to Chad and he begins working on unscrewing the window frame.

"What are you doing?" Brian questioned him.

"We could fit through here." Chad told him, "This window is bigger than it looks, the window frame is at least an inch or so thick if I get this off the window would be an inch bigger." He sighs as he pulls off the window frame from the window, "Ta-da! Come on. Thank god for me being a druggie when I was a freshman."

"My sister, friends and I escaped through the window." Chad sighed telling Adira, who was hasn't moved, "My friends... I-we got split up. My siblings and I never found them or my mom. Alexander and Brian never met up with us where we told them to meet us."

Adira begins to feel wet warmth damp her shoulder and she realizes Chad is crying. She didn't even notice the tight hold that he had on her.
