Chapter 23
While Tyler was asleep, the rest of the group did their best to get the dead flattened body out of the room so it doesn't fill the room with the smell of death and rotten flesh. It's only been a few minutes when Chad and Richie get Adira back into the office building after hours of her freaking out when she realized Jane was missing.
When Tyler fell asleep and Madison and Adira stopped laughing, Adira had gotten a feeling that something was missing and once she looked around that level she realized it was Jane that was missing. She freaked, asked questions on where Jane was, which she only got the answer they didn't know and that none of them were paying attention to her because the accident with the infected. She undid the tie Richie and Dan did and searched all the levels below eventually she ran outside hoping to see Jane wondering around on the streets or just fell asleep somewhere but she was nowhere to be found. She wasn't asleep somewhere or wondering around. She was gone and Adira was about to go look for her but the guys stopped her before she could.
Of course that didn't stop her and she tried to go look for her in the city on her own but the boys refused to let her do so. When they finally got her back inside the building, they retied the door close and started on rearranging the desks to put a safe sleeping area that also allowing them to leave if necessary.
While they were doing that, Adira walks up to a window and look out. She crossed her arms over her chest letting out a deep breath. All she could think about was Jane and all these people's faces, every single person she killed from Jane's mother to the male employee, who she flattened with a table and stabbed him with office utensils. All those human beings she killed in cold blood just to keep her family safe. She wished she never left the kids with the older guys. Maybe if she was there and wasn't clearing the building Jane wouldn't be missing.
They deserved it she thought
"Not the mother." She spoke her voice barely above a whisper.
She asked you to her thoughts said
Adira looks back up, putting her chin in his hands and looking out the window. This time at the dark sky. A memory comes flooding back to her.
"Stop being so weak, Adira!" A husky male voice yelled at the brunette girl walking away from him.
"I am not weak!" She turns around and shouts at him in frustration.
They have been at this since that morning. It was already five o'clock and he just refused to let her stop until she got the hang of using the weapon. They were both frustrated. She was hungry, tired and as angry as a bull while he didn't mind having an empty stomach but he was getting frustrated with the 5'4 foot brunette girl for not being able to shoot.
"Then shoot the goddamn deer." He demanded, "Come prove it."
"No!" She shouts.
"Because you're a coward!" He told her.
Her jaw clenched and balled up her fist. Clenching and unclenching her fist trying her best to calm herself down but it wasn't working. She angrily stomped her way over to the tall thin man, snatching the bow he was holding in one of his hand and ripped an arrow from the pouch he had hanging on his back. She put the arrow in its rightful place and pulled it as she lifted it up aiming at the deer. She took a deep breath as she aimed the arrow at the deer simply eating grass and looking around. She slowly inhaled and exhaled and that's when it hit her...
What about the poor deer?
What about his family? Does he have one? What if that was her?
He's just minding his own business unaware of what might hit him.
Her jaw clenched again as her grip tightened around the bow. She threw the bow and arrow to the dirt floor as she let out a frustrated groan. She turned around and walked towards the teal house.
"Exactly!" He called after her, "You're weak."
She paused at the door about to slide it close, "I am not weak!" She screamed as she walked towards the man already standing near a bunch of used targets, "Just because I don't want to harm an innocent breathing animal does not make me weak!" She was no standing inches in front of him.
His narrowed eyebrows showed he was angry but it didn't stop him from doing what he needed to do. And what he needed to do was to teach her how to survive. He grabbed the bow and arrow that she threw on the floor and picked it up pulling the arrow back with the string it sat upon. He aimed it, inhaled and exhaled and released in just a minute without hesitation. Adira watched as the arrow spin around cutting the air and any green leaves that are in its path. To her it was like the time had been slowed down as it continued to whirl around perfectly as it glided through the air towards the deer. Time seemed to speed back up as the arrow shoved itself into the deer's temple killing the deer instantly.
He put the bow down and turned his focus back on a now mortified girl. Her now glossy eyes were widening as she stared at the arrow standing straight up. He put his face close to hers, where she turned her gaze back on him.
"You are weak." He told her in a harsh tone as ice cold covered every word he spat out.
Even though he didn't mean too.
She turned on her heels and walked into the house, slamming the sliding door shut in the process. It was that moment he regretted the words he used.
He, of all people, knew she was everything but weak. He knew it wasn't weakness that stopped her but her big heart that he so much adored. She had more love than hatred in her soul. In which that was he admired the most.
He didn't mean what he said. He didn't mean to come off harsh. All he wanted was to make sure that innocent looking girl... The girl who wasn't full of hate... the girl who saw the good in everything and anyone... The girl, who always been the light for everyone around her but always had her lights out for herself. His little girl was skilled in anything and everything that could help her survive. For he knew human resources would run out.
The image of her father faded out of her mind. She let out a sigh as she turned her back on the window.
"I am weak." She mumbles to herself as she slides down the wall, "Why am I so weak?"
She prompted her arms up on her knees and lifted her head up. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath through her nose feeling her chest rise up as her lungs expand filling with air. Through her mouth she exhaled letting her chest extract. Adira opened her eyes as she allowed her head to fall to the right. What she saw scared her half to death.
In her line of vision she could see a woman. Well a woman's head at least. She couldn't see the rest of her for the head and finger nails weren't connected to anything. The woman's head was surrounded with straight jet back hair. Her large eyes were pure black with a sight white dot in the middle; Adira could just tell the woman was pure evil. The woman tilted her head as if she was curious about the frightened girl that was frozen a few feet away from her.
Her thin pale lips matched her skin oh so perfectly to her pale skin that it gave the illusion that she had none. Adira didn't even notice the women's lips curl upward in a devilish smile. Adira sucks in a breath and releases a shaky one as her heart picks up speed beating against her rib cage as she began to shake slightly; once she saw the long pale fingers below the woman's head started to curl and dig its way into the carpet below.
As soon as Adira blinks, the evil woman opens her mouth to an extent that no human being ever could, showing off her shark like blood stained teeth and split sharp tongue. The woman begun to rapidly made her way towards Adira.
The sudden movement caused Adira to crawl backwards before stumbling to her feet and backing away not paying attention to the things behind her. She is too busy keeping an eye on the woman coming after her that she did not notice the table right behind her. As she kept taking more steps backwards, she knocks over the table, which took her with it. On her way down she hit her head on the bottom of a round table causing the table to fall on top of her abdomen. She let out a groan and begins to cough and grunt as she was on the floor.
She heard footsteps but her focus is on her squished abdomen so she didn't care for it. She grips the table until her knuckles turns white while her legs bent and moves naturally trying to bring itself up to her stomach. She moans in pains trying to get the table off of her so she could breathe properly.
"Oh my god." She heard someone say as gasps also fills her ears, "Are you okay?"
The weight on her abdomen was lifted off and she began to breathe correctly again. The table rolls off of her with ease allowing her to sit up, holding her stomach with one hand as the other kept her up. Her coughing eventually dies down allowing her to look up to see a worried audience. She realized what she had just seen and wastes no time pulling herself up on her knees with her hands on the table then pokes her head up to look over the now sideways table just to see that the floating woman's head was not there anymore. It confuses her causing her eyebrows to narrow and her eyes to gaze around the room in search for the floating head woman.
"Hey." Chad snaps his fingers "Are you okay?" He asks putting his hand on her arm and shakes her back to reality.
"What?" She suddenly looks at him.
"Are you okay?" He repeats himself.
"Oh. Uh." Her mind finally processes what he was asking but before she answers she looks back over the table then back at Chad, "um- Yeah. I'm fine." She quickly nods.
"What happened?" Tyler spoke up as he took a step forward.
"Um-" She didn't know what to say or how to answer so she took a moment to answer, " I thought I heard something and-" She begins to stutter, "I- um- I got spooked, that's all." She runs her hand through her hair, "Sorry."
"Come on." Chad says pulling her to her feet and touches her cheek, caressing it with his thumb, "Let's go get some sleep." He looks over everyone, who replies with a nod.
Everyone, who was staring at Adira, turns round making their way to a spot away from the window. Chad puts a hand on Adira's back and leads her to the space the group will be sleeping for the night.
Adira puts a hand over her mouth as she quietly yawns and watches Chad, Richie and Dan make a final touch on the safe sleeping area before they actually lay down to sleep. Tyler comes up to Adira and stands right next to her mimicking her stance where her arms were cross over her chest.
"Are you sure you are okay?" Tyler spoke up not looking at her but keeping his gaze on the boys.
"Yeah- I-I'm fine, Tyler." She answers him taking a look at him from the corner of her eyes.
"You scared me." He admits, "Us." He quickly corrects himself.
She smiles knowing he just openly admitted to being scared of her being harmed or losing her. She quickly covers it up by pulling her lips into her mouth before licking them and nodding.
"Sorry." She tells him, "I didn't mean to scare you." She wraps her arm around his shoulders before adding, "Guys." Rolling her eyes.
"Pfft." He snorts and laughs and rolls his eyes.
"Come on." She playfully pushes him away, "Help me close the blinds.
