Chapter 20

The sudden echo of the voice makes everyone jump out of their own skin, putting everyone on alert. Everyone, who has a weapon, takes out their weapons as the scream rang through their ears. Adira's eyes open after only a few moments of them being closed and, knowing Chad, takes out the pocket knife he kept in his back pocket. She takes a step away from Chad, turns towards the direction the sound came from only to see Jane beneath a crawling infected. The undead was holding her down with his feet as its hands tries clawing at Jane's tiny body but couldn't due to her constant rapid motion of her arms, keeping the hands from ripping into her.

Adira opens the pocket knife in one quick motion, lifts her arm above her and throws the knife at the infected. Almost in a second, the knife plunges into his head, making it go to the side from the impact. The body drops to the side making a thud sound as it lands on the concrete ground. Its limbs still has its place on Jane's body as she wiggles out. Adira was already removing the limbs and picking up Jane when the three boys: Tyler, Richie and Dan, got to her pointing their weapons at them.

Adira takes the knife out of the former human and takes hold of Jane carrying her, "Come on." She said looking at them as she walks past them, "We gadda keep moving." She said as the boys slowly put away their weapons.

"Nice shot." Richie praises as he looks down at the body he was stepping over.

"There should be a building or something safe we could clean out and rest for the night." Chad informs her, "If we get off the next ramp."

She just nods with Jane leaning against her shoulder, "Do you think the cities would be crawling with those things?" She asks no one in particular.

"Most likely." Dan replies to her.

"The cities were the most populated areas when the dead didn't come back to life." Richie tells her emphasizing the word 'didn't', "So I am guessing the cities still are populated since that's where those things will find actually living breathing humans to feed on."

"We really haven't been to the cities yet." Dan confesses, "Too scared and the last time I've been in the cities was a few weeks ago and that's when we were trying to escape the city."

Adira stood quiet and just nods as Dan and Richie spoke. She let out a sigh and looks up before looking straight ahead, lifting the sleeping girl higher in her arms.

An hour later the group found themselves standing outside a tall building that was multiple stories high. Adira takes the first step up to the glass doors, cupping her hands around her eyes and leans in a little to take a look inside. When her eyes adjusts to the minimum lighting she has, she could see papers scattered everywhere on the floors and desks but not one movement was inside. The rest of the group was already standing next to her looking into the building hoping to see something inside.

"So..." Dan moves back a little to look at the rest of his group, "Who's going to check? What are the plans?" He asks.

"Well I was thinking us three go inside." He offers pointing to Dan, Chad and himself, "We have guns."

"Wouldn't the noise just draw them here?" Tyler asks looking up at him, "Using the guns." He adds.

"How do you know that?" Madison asks with an eyebrow raised.

"Richie told me." He answers simply, "They've been out here longer than us."

"Oh right." Richie nods in agreement, "They do."

"Some see you; some smell and others hear you." Dan said looking at everyone.

"So we need someone who is quiet to go in." Richie told them as he starts thinking.

Just in that moment Richie and everyone else looks over at Adira, who was still looking inside until she notices everyone looking at her.

She let out a groan, "Why me?" She questions.

"You're the quietest one out of all of us." Dan answers.

"And you are really good with knives, which is a big plus." Richie told her.

"Well who is coming with me?" Adira asks looking over all of them and seeing them look away or take a step back, "You are sending me in there alone?"

"Back at the town you said you were slowed down because you had three people to watch over." Dan told her, "We just might be in your way. Plus we don't want you to feel like you have to keep an eye out for us."

She put her forehead to the glass and thought about it, "Fine." She groans, "But if I die it's on you." She said as she opens the door.

When she said that it made Chad look up at the building, "On second thought..." He starts, quickly grabbing her arm, "I'll come with."

"No." She said, "Richie and Dan are right someone will just get in the way if they come. I won't be focused."

He opens his mouth to protest but she pulls him closer to her so only he could hear.

"Plus I need someone I trust to stay here and watch Madison and Tyler." She whispers in his ear.

He quickly looks in her eyes realizing she doesn't trust those two boys. He forgot all about her trust issues but how could he forget about that when it was such a big problem before. Chad nods his head at her.

"Oh, right." He responds looking over at the three kids, "Be careful, please."

"I'll try." She said, "No promises I'll come back alive."

He gives her a serious look, "That's it-" He taps his hand on the door.

She smiles at his reaction, "Chad, I'm kidding." She laughs, "I'll be fine. Watch them for me." Both of them looks over at Madison, Tyler and Jane, "Give me at least a few hours or when you get the feeling something is wrong."

He took a deep breath, "Alright." He nods his head.

She put her hands on both sides of his head and pulls his head down a little just to reach his forehead and kisses him, "I most likely will be fine. Trust me." She looks into his eyes before taking out pocket knives out and flipping them open, "Keep an eye out for them." She looks at Tyler and points to the two girls.

Tyler gave her a nod before she disappears into the building. When the door closes, Richie let out a sigh and the six of them turns around to face the street. Tyler takes hold of Madison and Jane pulling them behind him.

"Looks like we are keeping an eye out." Dan sighs.

"Stay close, okay." Tyler whispers to the girls, who mumble an okay to him before Madison takes hold of his free hand and they both look from side to side.

Inside the building, it didn't take long for her to clear the first two levels since they only contained small desks a storage room in the back and two bathrooms for the men and women. At this moment, she was on the third level with two pocket knives in each hand and one hand on the door knob ready to push open the door in front of her. She put her ear to the door and listens for anything that could give away someone's presence behind the door. When no sound came through, she slowly opens the door taking a step in with much awareness to her surroundings. The light inside flickers giving Adira a little bit of light since there was no windows in the room.

She could tell the room was a bathroom for that floor. She lowers herself to give herself a better look of all three stalls that were in there before pushing them all open as quickly as she can. When she was satisfied that no one was there, she moves on to the next level finished with the level she was on.

She walks up the staircase until she reaches the next door and did the whole process over. She knocks, waits and listens when she didn't hear anything she slowly walks in, clearing the big areas of the room before clearing the smaller rooms. She carefully looks into the hallways before continuing her sweep and making her way to the first door. She swing the door open and was met with nothing but the light that the moon provided.

The room was a tiny office with papers scattered everywhere, pens and pencils were spilled all over the desk and a lamp was smashed on the floor. There were two filing cabinets one on each side of the desk, a book shelf was pushed against one of the far walls. Two small chairs were knocked over in front of the desk. It wasn't until she walks over to the huge glass wall behind the desk that she sees the knocked over computer with a broken screen and the huge leather office chair lying on its side.

She looks around the room to see if there was any doors in that room but when she didn't see anything, she turns her gaze back on the view of the dark city below. She looks up at the sky expecting to see pure black in the sky but her eyes were met by a million sparkling stars that danced beautifully in the sky along with the shining moon. She never saw the city when all the lights were out but she thought it was most amazing thing she's ever seen.

If only the world didn't have to become destruction She thought.

She pulls her eyes away from the view of the city with the lights out. She had a job to do and she couldn't just stand there and watch the stars all night. She walks towards the door but turns to take one last look out the window before moving on to the next door. She did exactly what she did the first door: knocks and listens before entering. Only when the door was centimeters open was Adira thrown back from the force of the door rapidly opening.

An undead rushes out of the room and tackles her to the floor. Adira let out a grunt once her back hit the carpet floor, losing her grip of one of her knives as it slips out of her hand and slides over to the wall. She quickly lifts her arm, putting her forearm against its throat in defense from the undead mouth. Her breathing became quick and her heart starts to race from the unexpected attack. She places her palm on the side of the things head and with her free hand shoves the thing off of her.

The undead crashes into the wall as Adira took that time to get back on her feet and race to the door to the stairs. The monster quickly recovers and goes after her violently shoving, the almost closed door, open, making it bang into the wall behind it. Adira was already up a level when the thing saw where she was. She looks over the railing to see the monster racing after her and she decides to speed up. She runs up a few more flights of stairs before looking back over the railing.

She sees that the undead women was two flights below her but coming up real quickly. She takes that time to think of a plan, one of which includes her running into one of the doors not knowing what might being in there and two  jumping down to confuse the once living women and giving herself a chance to find a place to hide. She looks back at the undead lady and sees she was now right across from her so Adira hops over the railing as the monster made its way up the stairs. She jumps and she wraps her fingers to the pole on the railing below her but it didn't take long for her fingers to let go. At that moment, panic flashes through her eyes as she began to fall, trying her best to grip on to whatever would stop her from falling.

After falling two flights down, she finally gets a hold of a pole from the railing, locking her hand in place. Her body falls below her as it turns in the opposite direction of her hand, causing her to dislocate her shoulder. She hums in pain at the same time she closes her eyes, trying her best not to let a scream of pain escape from her lips, even though it really wanted to. Adira had to learn how to endure a lot of different types of pain but a dislocated limb wasn't on her list of things she had to endure before the world crashed and burned.

The dislocated shoulder left her frozen as she let the pain run through her bones but only for a moment. When the feeling of someone ripping her arms off stops, she looks up to find the thing looking down at her, letting out their famous screech, before making its way down the stairs. She looks around for a way out without plummeting to the ground or making her injured shoulder worst. She looks next to her at the slanted railings and knew that was her chance out but she had to use both arms to climb over. She stretches her arm out and gently swinging herself until she grabs a pole then she let go after making sure she had a really strong hold on the railing.

She lifts her injured arm, grabbing hold of the railing and pulling herself up but a flash of pain ran through her arm and shoulder making her release the hold she had on the top railing and let out a groan of pain, unable to handle the pain. She switches her hands to where the injured one was holding on and the uninjured one was hauling her own body up over the railing. Once she had half of her body over the railing, she hauls the rest of herself up. Her feet made a thud when it lands on the stairs as the monster got to the stairs across from her.

She bends over trying to slow down her breathing as she begins to rub her shoulder and lets out a hiss when she slightly moves it. She held on to her shoulder as she made her way down the rest of the stairs. Her feet hit the flat surface when she trips over her feet and stumbles down the rest of the way to the door smacking right into it. She pushes herself off the door that had a white 5 in the middle of it and quickly opens it. When she looks inside, she sees another infected, which looks to be a male employee due to his torn up black suit with an orange tie, standing in a position as if he was banging on the door trying to escape.

When the undead man's eyes lands on her standing in the door way, it let out loud ear piercing screech and sprints towards her. Her eyes widen as it get closer and closer with every large step it took making her slam the door in its face, making it stumble back but not stopping it. She opens the door once again with the undead man already making its way towards her. When it became dangerously close to her, she slams it with full force over and over again until the things head was smashed in and black liquid was flowing out and it was splashed on door and wall. A deep growl brings her back to realization that the infected male wasn't the only monster she had to deal with and she quickly re-opens the door forcefully smacking the infected female, causing her to fall back.

She took that time to sprint down the hall with the monster fully recovered and right behind her. She was too busy making a run for it that she didn't notice the new monster took notice in her smell and began crawling after her. She makes a run to the end of the hall and into a room, which she turns to close the door... but was too late. Her feet lifts off the ground and her back hit the floor. The infected female and Adira rolls around on the ground both trying to fight for dominance.

Unfortunately, for Adira the infected got on top but Adira made the quick move to push her feet against the soft pelvic area of the once human woman and shoves her off of her. The once living woman flips right over Adira's head, crashing into the window and shatters a huge hole through it, taking pieces of glass with her. Adira rolls onto her stomach and looks out the window before looking at the door and seeing another making its way towards her. She tries to get up but already got tackled to the floor, again, rolling around but this time the monster rolls out the window taking Adira along with it.
