Chapter 19

It was in the afternoon when the group had got to the freeway they were looking for. They were currently walking around vacant cars looking for any sign of living human beings. Adira was looking through a car window with Jane while Tyler and his sister walked off, Dan and Richie was going behind chatting while Chad was looking around. It was only a few minutes when Richie decided to speak up to everyone.

"What are we looking for again?" Richie asked throwing his hand up in the air.

"Humans." Adira answered, "Or weapons." She shrugged.

"We have guns you know?" Richie said opening a trunk that belongs to one of the cars that was the closest to them.

"I want us to all have one." Adira said, "Not all of us are good with guns FYI." She looked at him.

That made him drops his head into the trunk and start looking through the stuff that was in there. Dan sighed looking over at Adira looking through another cars window before helping Richie go through the stuff. He was trying to distract himself from opening his mouth and saying something he was so curious about. The two boys haven't found anything so they just left it and went on to the next one. Just then Chad decided to jump on top of a car and look around.

"See anything?" Adira asked as she looked up at him from the ground.

He shook his head looking both ways, "No." He looked down at her.

"Okay then." Adira whispers to herself but looked up at Chad again, "That's good then."

"Yeah." Chad agreed with her, "We won't have to- Shit." He said getting down.

"What?" Adira asked.

"Not clear at all." He informed her, "Those freaks are coming."

"Where?" Adira asked already guarded.

"They are coming from behind the tipped over truck." Chad told her.

Adira looked around, "Where's Madison and Tyler, Chad?"

"I don't know um-" He got on one knee and looked, "By the tipped truck." His eyes widen as he looked at her.

"Shit." She muttered to herself and began quietly running to them.

Once Tyler and Madison saw Adira coming towards them, they smile.

"He-" Tyler was interrupted by Adira covering both their mouths and dropping to the floor, hitting their backs against the truck.

The two siblings look up at her. She just puts her index finger to her lips and then points to the shadow figure near the car on the opposite side of them. They see the shadow moving slowly and they immediately freeze in their spots. Adira taps both of them on the shoulder before pointing to a car nearby with her head. They all got to their feet, still crouching, and made their way to the vehicle. Adira was looking back making sure those things don't see them. Once they are safely on the opposite side of the car, Adira carefully opens the backseat door, trying her best to stop the car from making a sound. When the door is open enough for them to get through they told Madison to go first.

Madison stopped in her tracks when she saw that there was something blocking her way. She took a glance at Adira before looking back at the blocker. Adira looks over to what Madison was looking at and her eyes caught sight of a decomposed lady's body. She pulled Madison behind her and stretched her arm out, taking hold of the fabric on the body and starts tugging on her. When it comes lose, the body fall to the floor and the trio are shocked for a moment before gaining their calmness back. Tyler kicks it a little to check if it would move but after a few seconds of waiting it doesn't move an inch from what they could see. Once they established it won't move Adira started pushing Madison and Tyler into the backseat of the car first, making her the last one to get in.

As she's closing the door, the decomposed body quickly gets up and launches itself at Adira taking hold of her leg. Adira jumps a little falling in to the floor of the car but soon starts to kick the corpse in its face but no matter how hard she kicks it just won't give up. Adira looks up at Taylor and Madison for some help. Tyler looks around frantically looking for a weapon to give to her so she could use it. When he looks over the front seat and sees a cane leaning against the door. Tyler looks at Adira then reaches over, wraps his fingers around the handle and pulls it to the back.

"Here." Tyler whispered, "See if this works."

Adira grabs it and does not hesitate to bash one of the ends into the corpses face. The power causes the infected to fall back and Adira quickly sits up and slams the end into the head repeatedly until it was broken. She looked to her side to see another stumbling around the car so she pulls her feet in and gently shuts the car door.

"Get down and be quiet." She whispers as she pulls Tyler and Madison to the floor, "And do not move."

They did as they were told and got to the floor and stays as still as they can be. Tyler and Madison are huddled up on one side while Adira was leaning against the car door on the other. Adira looked up just in time to see multiple infected slowly walk by turning their heads ever five seconds and then it hit her. Her eyes widen before she closes them, puts her head back and sighs.

Meanwhile Chad slides off the car to the back, where Jane is. He looks at her then pokes his head out to see the herd of infected. He looks back to where Richie and Dan are and see that they don't even notice the herd coming their way. Chad looks at the scared little girl and with his head motions for her to follow him, receiving a tiny nod. The two begin to crawl backwards watching both the back and front of them. They quietly move to the back of the car behind the previous car they were just at.

When they get back to the spot they needed to be Chad looked back to where the infected were and seen the one in front was looking at something to the side. He took that as a sign to move before he turns and sees them. Chad wrapped his arms around Jane's waist and hauls her up quietly but quickly going to the two boys, who seem to be in their own world. He pushes the two men in the trunk making one of them about to speak but he gently tosses Jane in there with them before getting in himself getting the boy to quiet down.

"What the hell, man?" Dan whispered- yelled after Chad shut the trunk.

Chad just shushed him.

Together they laid in the trunk in complete silence the only sound coming from them as they inhaled and exhaled air.

"I'm scared." A small voice quietly interrupted the silence.

"Me too, kid." Richie told her in the same quiet voice, "Me too."

The only noise that was heard was low screeching and things hitting the car. Jane had her eyes closed as she huddled to herself. Richie took notice and slid her on top of his body and allowed her to lay on him instead of being squished by him and Dan. He was trying to comfort the shaking girl by gently stroking her hair. This action caused the little girl to fall asleep almost immediately. Dan was staring up at the ceiling of the trunk even though he couldn't see anything. Chad was simply looked around without moving an inch. It didn't take long for Dan to speak up again ruining the quiet.

"Hey um-" he spoke quietly, "How we going to get out of here?"

Even though they couldn't see each other Richie and Chad both turned their heads to look at him.

"Isn't there some kind of lever you could pull or push or whatever that would get us out?" Richie asked.

Chad put his hands to the trunk door and started feeling around for anything he could push or pull, "I don't feel anything." He said continuing his search when he didn't find anything he let out a sigh and let his arms drop back down, "Nope, I don't feel anything."

"How are we going to know when they are gone?" Dan asked.

"I don't know." Chad answered, "When we don't hear them anymore or see them."

This time it was Dan turn to give Chad a look.

As if he could feel it, Chad said, "Don't give me that look."

"You are an idiot." Dan told him.

"Me? That's coming from someone who was to out of it to pay attention to their surroundings."

With that the bickering began. Richie was the only one trying to shut them up not only because someone might hear them but also because of the sleeping girl. They were too busy arguing they didn't even realize the screeching had come to a halt and there were no more banging on the car. They also didn't hear the people talking on the other side of the steel plate.

"Guys!" Richie yelled having enough of their bickering, "Shut. Up."

Dan and Chad look at Richie.

"How about you stop ya yappin' and start thinking of a way to get out."

Chad and Dan let out a sigh at the same time and start looking around. The two boys started searching for a latch or something that would make the trunk open again. So far they found nothing. Dan looks around where Richie is and his eyes set on the back of the back seat.

"Hey, Richie." Dan spoke.

"Yeah?" Richie turned his head to look at him.

"Does the back seat go forward?" He asked.

"Oh I don't know let me see." Richie answered putting Jane down next to him and scooting a little closer to the back. He put his hands against the seat top part of the trunk near the edge of the back seat and began sliding his hands in both directions trying to find a latch. When he didn't find anything at the top he slides his hands down the sides before moving to the bottom. He shook his head every time when he found something but it didn't do what he wanted it to do, "No nothing." He informs them dropping his arms on his abdomen.

When the boys get the news, Chad lets out a sigh while Dan lets out a groan that was full of frustration.

"You just had to push us in the trunk didn't you?" Dan mumbled.

Chad narrowed his eyebrows at him but Dan couldn't see it. He opened his mouth to say retort something but didn't when the trunk opened up letting light in. They all look at the person holding the trunk open looking down at them. Even though the trunk was opened and they could get out, the boys still didn't move. They just laid there looking at the person.

"You are lucky they didn't hear you." The voice rings threw all their ears, "Let's be on our way before they come back."

Dan and Chad sat up first and hopped out of the car. Both dust themselves off before looking back up waiting for Richie to get out.

"Where did you disappear off too, girl?" Dan asked looking up to the brunette haired girl.

"What were you doing stuck in a trunk?" Adira ask as she picked up Jane out of the trunk to let Richie out.

Once he was out she turned around and put Jane on the ground before looking up at Dan and crossing her arms over her chest.

"Well dumbass here stuffed us in there." Dan said pointing to Chad then at the trunk.

"Fine next time something happens like this I am taking Jane and Richie to hide while your dumbass stands their not paying attention to what's going on." Chad told him with his hands up to his shoulders.

Adira shakes her head, "Come on." She told them, "It's about to get dark soon. We have to move now if we want to get as far away from the herd and find a place to stay."

With that said they all started slowly, quietly jogging forward in the opposite direction of the herd. By the time half the sun disappeared they were still walking between the cars. This time they aren't running as they were at first instead they slowed down and began walking. Madison threw her head back looking at the sky as her body was slumped over.

"I'm thirsty." Madison cried.

"Do we still have water?" Adira questioned as she looked to her right where Chad was walking on the other side of the cars.

"Yeah I think so." Chad answers quickly swinging his backpack forward and opens it up, going through it, "Last bottle for me." He gently tossed it over to her.

"Thanks." She says as it lands in her hand, "Here but go share some with your brother." She untwisted the cap and passed Madison both the cap and bottle.

Madison just nods before running over to her brother on the other side of the cars to Adira's left. Adira watches her closely before turning her attention on Jane, watching her walk alongside the cars holding her arm out so that her fingertips glide on the metal.

"Jane, Madison has water if you want some." Adira informed her, which she only receives a small nod.

Adira looks back at Richie and Dan walking a few feet behind Tyler and Madison. She shifted to Chad, who looked as if he was kicking something on the floor. He lifted his gaze for a second to take a look around before looking back down and continuing his action.

As the sun fully fell from the sky an hour or two later, they come across a sign that lists miles of cities and towns. The group had stopped to take a break from walking giving the kid's time to rest their feet. Adira was looking up at the sign while Chad was drinking water. Dan and Richie were going through cars a few yards away from Tyler, who was looking around on the other side of the freeway for anything or anyone. Madison was on top of a car eating a granola bar while Jane was walking around waiting.

Adira and Chad walked back to where the kids were hanging out and simply leaned up against a white Honda. Adira let out a yawn while Chad stared at her as she covered her mouth and yawned. He let out a sigh and looked both ways looking at anything and everything.

"You tired?" Chad asked tapping Adira on the stomach with his knuckles before taking a sip of water.

She sighed before answering, "A little." She looked at him and took the bottle he was handing to her and took a sip.

"Let's rest here then." He suggested, "We all find a car and sleep in it."

She shook her head and rubbed her eyes, "No we need somewhere safer."

"Adira look around." He told her softly, "There is no safer anymore."

"I prefer a building if you don't mind." She told him, "It is safer. We could all stay in the same room and if anyone of anything tries to get us then we all know and can help."

He let out a sigh, grabbed her by her shoulders and pulled her in, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and hugging her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder digging her face in the crook of his neck. He rubbed her back gently with one hand while the other held on to the water bottle.

"Okay." He whispers to her.

In response she just let out a sigh and hugged him tighter. Silence fell upon them and they enjoyed it. They allowed themselves to relax and for a moment peace actually fell upon them too. Slowly her arms started to relax and began to slide down his back while her eyes couldn't stay open anymore and she allowed them to close.

"Adira!" Someone cried out interrupting the peace.
