Chapter 18
"You okay?" Chad asked as they all met on the middle at the end of all the buildings opposite from where they began, "It took you forever."
The group all stood in a circle as they all faced each other. By the time they were all done making sure everything was clear for any potential harm it was already late afternoon. They all walked to a gas station building entering it while looking around.
"Hey watch it." Adira looked at him, "I have children I have to protect you don't."
"Good point." Chad said as he went over to the refrigerators and looked back at the kids running to the candy aisle, "So you thirsty? They have water, soda, orange juice, etc." He looked back at the drinks inside.
"Water." Adira watched the kids as she walked up to Chad, "Just water."
Chad opened the door and pulled out two long water bottles and handed one to Adira, "So..." Chad said as he took a sip of water and looked at her.
"So..." Adira did the same.
"I thought you were dead." Chad whispered as he looked straight into her brown eyes.
"Well I'm not." She whispered back.
"I'm glad you're not."
Chad took a few steps towards her closing the space between them.
"Found some bags in the back!" A voice boomed through the store making Chad jump and take a few steps back.
Adira turned around to see Richie and Dan come out the back. Dan was holding up a few backpacks while Richie was eating chips. Dan tossed a bag to both Adira and Chad, who caught it almost immediately.
"I already have one." Chad informed them throwing the bag back.
"Well who else do we give it to?" Dan asked.
"Tyler!" Adira called out.
Tyler came out of the candy aisle eating a Big Hunk, "Yeah." He said.
Adira takes a bag out of Dan's hand, "Take this and fill it up with food." She walked up to him and handed it to him.
"Okay." Tyler said, "Can I put Big Hunk in it?" He slightly looked up at her.
"Yeah, why not?" Adira told him, "Just make sure you pack drinks and anything else useful."
"Yes." He whispered before turning on his heels just to turn back, "Oh and, Adira, here." He took off his button up shirt and gave it to her, "You need it more than I do."
"Thanks." She smiled and took the shirt, putting it on and buttoning it up.
With that he went back to the two girls in the candy aisle.
"Okay that works." Dan shrugged as he unzipped his bag, "Now Let's sees what we are going to need."
Dan looked around before heading towards the cashier. Tyler walks back to where Adira stood and called her. She turned around to face him and looked slightly down at him.
"The girls want to know if we could fill the bag with candy." Tyler asked pointing back at the candy isle.
"Sure but remember drinks and useful things too." Adira told him.
"Okay."
"Hey, kid." Dan called out.
Tyler turned around to look at Dan behind the counter messing with everything.
"Grab me some Butterfingers will ya." He told him.
"Um- yeah." Tyler said, "Sure."
"Okay so what are we planning on doing once we are done grabbing things?" Chad asked grabbing a bunch of lighter and shoving it into Adira's backpack that he took from her.
"Well we can stay here for a little." Dan offered, "Take the rest of the day to fuel up with some food and hydrate ourselves."
"Yeah especially you." Richie pointed at Adira, who stared at him as he spoke, "Knowing Jack didn't feed you much. If we are going to stay together then we need everyone to have energy."
"Where do we go?" Chad asked looking at the two boys near the counter.
"We find a safe place." Dan shrugged.
"Or we could try finding others." Adira suggested.
"We are going to run into them while finding a safe place so that won't be a problem." Dan said.
"We have to find my sister and the rest of my group." Chad said.
"How are we going to find them?" Dan asked Chad as the group walked out of the liquor store.
"I don't know but there has to be a way to be able to find them." Chad answered.
The three boys took a deep breath and looked all around them trying to figure out what to do. The three little kids walked out and stood right behind the three guys as they ate candy. None noticed that Adira walked off across the street. She walked up to a building that had a lot of bright colored flowers that were all different kinds of shapes and size. She held out her hands and allowed the flowers to brush the tips of her fingers as she looked at each and every one.
She looked up to see a Baby blue oval shaped sign that read Daisy, Forgive-Me-Not. She giggled at the name and looked back at the flowers. She came across a certain flower and picked a few up and turned her head to look at all the other stores. A vintage looking building caught her eye as she looked across the street. The building had the word Antique in beautiful cursive at the top. When she got closer she saw a sign hanging down, it read Tiny Town Books. When she looked at the door she saw more wordings. On the glass it read dreamers paradise.
She opened the door and walked in only to be met by tons of books and the old book smell that she loved so much. She walked even more in letting the door close behind her. Her eyes sparkled at the sight of so many books and so many shelves. She looked to her right to see the cash register on the counter. She looked past the counter to the one behind it and her eyes want wide in amuse as she let a smile spread across her face.
"No way." She whispers to herself as she went behind the counter into the tiny squared space, "An old phone so cool."
She stares down at the old fashioned paramount phone running her fingers over the top of it. She picks it up and places it up to her ear with one hand as the other spins the finger wheel. She let out a little laugh and jumps a little.
"Wow that's so cool." She says as she set the phone down back where it was and turns to walk away from it.
She sees on the floor papers thrown everywhere around the store. She sees one that catches her attention and picks it up. It was a map of her state. She folded it up and continued to look around. She moved through the shelves as she eyes all the books she walked past a few times taking out a book that really got her attention. She made her way to the back as she turned made a turn she found a tiny clear space that was in a square. She walked into the tiny space in the middle was an old fashioned baby blue type writer. Adira ran to the spot where it was, sat down and started typing.
Madison eyebrows pulled together as she looked around them. Tyler took noticed and looked around seeing if he could figure out why his baby sister looked confused but he didn't see anything.
"What's wrong, Madison?" Tyler asked looking down at her, "What are you looking for?"
By this time everyone was looking at Madison, "Where's Adira? Where'd she go?"
Everyone looked around them while others did a 360 trying to see if she was in sight but she wasn't. Tyler looked inside the liquor store but still nothing. He walked back to the group, who was already slowly making their way away from the liquor store why they heard a crash. All heads turned down the street in the direction they came from. There weren't any other noises for a few moments but the silence was soon interrupted by a bunch of thuds as if multiple things fell. They all began to walk quickly to the store that read Antique on top but when they were half way to it a figure came running out.
"I'm okay." Adira said more to herself then to anyone in particular, "I'm okay." She breathed.
Everyone stopped moving as they looked at her as she looked back into the store.
"Oh check this out." She said running back in then coming back out a few seconds later with the type writer, "Look what I found." She held out the type writer and smiled, "It's so cool."
The three boys ran into the book store while the kids ran up to Adira.
"What is that?" Madison asked confused of the thing in Adira's hand.
"It's a type writer." Adira answered.
"What does it do?" Tyler asked pressing one of the letters.
"It's a type writer." Adira says again, "You type with it. Like the way you use computers and text messaging." She says as she sits down.
"Does it send out text messages?" Madison asked.
"No." Adira looks up at her.
"Can it send emails?" Tyler asks.
"Does it have Wi-Fi?" Madison asked.
"Does it play music?"
"No. No." Adira said, "And No. This isn't from modern times. This is from back then in grandma's days."
"If it has no Wi-Fi or can't send emails, what's the point?" Madison asked.
"This is what people back then in the 1860s used to write letters to each other and news reports and stuff like that." Adira informs them.
"Boo." Madison says.
"Boo?" Adira asked, "Boo? Madison, they don't make these anymore."
"I can see why." She retorted.
Inside the store the boys held their weapons up and ready to use if they need it. They walked past a few shelves and nothing seems out of place. Once they get to the back they see books all over the ground and a trail of black liquid on a few of the shelves. They go further to the back to see one shelf tipped over and on the other side of an isle was a foot hanging out of one of the isles. They slowly walked up to it Dan kicking it making sure it doesn't move.
When it doesn't make any movement they look down that isle and all they see is a dead body with black liquid around its head and a pool of it in its face. They examine the body and they notice the head was smashed in with a book and the book was still crammed into the head. They lower their weapons and head out the door to see Adira and the kids surrounding the typewriter.
"Are you okay?" Chad asked.
"What happened in there?" Dan asked.
"You guys didn't clear it correctly that's what happened." Adira answered ignoring Chad's question, "He came out from an opening near the corner I was in."
"Okay." Dan said, "Well, sorry if you got hurt or anything."
"It's cool." Adira said standing up, "He pushed me into a shelf and slapped me but I'm okay."
The two boys nodded and looked at her. They barely notice the flowers in her hands.
"What's with the flowers?" Richie pointed to her hand.
"Oh yeah." She held them up to her face, "I found them in the flower shop." She put one on everyone's ear, "They were my mom's favorite flowers."
Both Dan and Richie nodded and touched the flower. Dan took his off his ear and smelled it.
"Smells amazing." Dan smiles as he lets out a breath.
"I know right." Adira says with a smile.
"What's that?" Chad pointed at the paper in her other hand.
"A map I found in there." She answered, "If we are going to find your sister and the others we are going to need a map."
"But we don't know where they are." Dan told her.
"I know but we could use it to try and track where they would be." Adira said.
"How?" Richie asked.
"If we could find out which way they are heading we might be able to find out where we could meet them or somewhere close where we would cross each others paths." Adira told them, "So are we going to start walking or are we going to be staying here for the rest of the night?"
"Let's get some rest first." Richie told her, "Then maybe then you could explain that plane of yours to us."
