Chapter 16
Chad and Dan ran threw a bunch of buildings kicking down doors and occasionally smashing in a few heads with their bare fists. They were currently racing through the back of a kitchen dodging counters, chairs and pots and pans trying to catch up to a shadow they saw running into the building. Chad looked all over the place checking it to make sure they don't miss any innocent people or infected or the people who invaded the area. When they almost ran out of the building, Chad saw a body of what looked like a guard lying on the floor with his gun to the side of him. He immediately stopped causing Dan to notice and stop from opening the door.
"Man, come on." Dan Told Chad, "We might lose them."
"Wait-" Chad held up his hand before looking at him.
"What?"
Chad runs to the body, bends down to one knee and hesitantly reaches for the gun while he looks back and forth to the gun and the dead man. When the man doesn't move, Chad quickly picks up the gun and moves away. He cocks the gun to check to see if there's a bullet already inside. He was pleased to find there was. He moved on taking the clip and checking it.
"It's half full." Chad told Dan snapping the clip in.
"Do I get one?" Dan asked.
"Find a gun and yes, yes you do." Chad told him, "I'm going to check the body, here." He said handing Dan the gun, "Shoot if it moves."
Chad gently approaches the body and crouches and starts digging through its pockets. All he finds is paper and a pocket knife. Chad looks up at Dan opening the switch blade before closing it and putting it in his pocket.
"Check his boots and his belt." Dan told him, "I noticed the soldiers here have tons of weapons hiding all over their bodies."
Chad did as told and sure enough he found a 22 pocket handgun with some extra clips. Chad mentally cheered for his findings and putt it in his jean pocket as he stood up and walked towards Dan. As Chad was done searching they heard a noise coming from the door. To them it sounded as if someone was trying to get inside. Dan looked at Chad, who was now standing next to him. Chad nodded as he pulled out the pocket knife and Dan held the gun up with one hand and the other on the handle. He ripped the door open and aimed the gun.
Instead of a gun shot there were screams that filled the air.
"Don't shoot!" A voice yelled.
Chad had straightened up as he didn't feel threatened. Dan opened his eyes and looked at the person on the other side of the door. His shoulders fell as a sigh of relieve.
"Richie?" Dan called with a hint of shock and excitement as his eyes met by a young guy his age with dark hair that went into his light piercing grayish-green eyes that went well with his tan skin tone.
"Dan?" Richie called back.
Both men laughed and let a huge grin sneak up on their face.
"Oh my god, man" Dan said, "Thank god you're alive."
"Same to you, man." Richie said as they both embraced each other, "I saw you leave the jail house and I lost you."
"Why aren't you gone?" Dan asked.
"I was helping this group of kids escape." Richie answered, "Why are-"
"Group of kids?" Chad pushed Dan to the side and stepped forward, "What group of kids? Who?"
"We are looking for someone?" Dan told Richie.
"Hey, Chad, glad you made it alive too." Richie said ignoring his question.
"You said you were helping people." Chad said, "Where are they? Who are they?"
"These kids or three kids and a teenager, I guess." Richie shrugged, "I found them surrounded by monsters in a corner. I helped them out and they were following me but I lost them. I tried finding them and I swear I saw a shadow run in here. You said you were looking for someone?"
"Yeah some girl that Jack was holding captive turns out Chad knows her." Dan informed him as he pointed to Chad.
"Oh, really?" Richie looked at Chad.
"Yes, now come on we have no more time to waste." Chad said racing out the door.
"Right!" Richie and Dan said at the same time as they ran out following him.
As they continued running through buildings, they came to the back wall. Dan looked down as the floor as he walked forward with Richie behind him.
"Come on!" Dan called out to Chad, "She's not here, we have to go."
Chad ran to where Richie and Dan were and they all crawled under the gate and exiting each one helping the other person get up faster. They started walking as all of them took deep breaths to stable their breathing. As they walked, they took a few glances back as if waiting for something to happen.
"What happened to your group, Chad?" Richie asked.
"I don't know." He answered, "I told them to wait for me and to give me five minutes to find the girl I'm looking for so." He took a deep breath, "I don't know."
"Chad!" A few voices yelled.
People ran towards Richie, Dan and Chad but then came to a halt as they got close.
"I'm guessing you didn't find her?" Diana asked.
"No." Chad put his hands on his hips, "But we did find Richie."
"Is that good?" Braden asked.
Dan shot Braden a glare, as did Richie, "Yes that is good." Dan told him.
"Richie has a gun." Chad informed them, "So does Dan and me."
"You do?" Ben asked, "Do I get one?"
"If you could find one then sure, you can." Chad told him, "Dan found one, I found one. I'm not sure where Richie got one but hey he got one."
"Let's start moving." Tom told the others, "I don't want to be here any longer. We have Chad now let's go."
Everyone nodded and pulled on their backpacks that they had taken off for a moment. They all started walking in the opposite direction of the safe zone. Rounds of fire came from inside the metal walls along with loud screams and more fire. The group didn't turn around to see; instead, they picked up the pace and kept moving. More fire erupted and the group dunked noticing they were being fired at. Dan, Richie and Tom turned around to see no one.
"Shit." Richie mumbled to himself.
Tom looked at him, "What?"
"They're in the tower?" Dan pointed to the tower to the right as he looked at Richie, who just nodded.
"That's a bad thing?" Mari said making it coming out more as a question then a statement.
"You tell me-" Richie looked at her, "The sniper rifles are kept up there."
"Let's go!" Braden and Tom yelled at the same time.
The group quickly turned and started running at the exact time the bullets started flying their way. For a moment the bullets stopped and Dan looked at Richie.
"Do you think they gave up?" Diana asked as she heard nothing but their footsteps colliding with the pavement beneath them as they continued to run.
"Or they ran out of bullets." Mari said as she huffed out a breath.
Seconds after a single bullet was fired a small gasps cut through the silence. Erin was the first to look back and just in the matter of time to see a body hit the ground with a thud. She turned around almost immediately and ran to the body as others stopped as they noticed she ran back. Erin tried her best to get the person up to their feet.
"Ben, get up." Erin pulled her brother's arm but he couldn't.
There was a pool of blood around Ben's lifeless body almost seconds when his body hit the cement. Erin looked at her hands to find her brother's blood all over her hands. She shook him as she started crying.
"Ben?" She cried as she fell beside him.
"Blood..." Dan muttered, "I've never seen someone bleed out so quickly."
"They must have hit an artery." Chad said as he tried to see where his brother got shot but couldn't due to the tears that were picking at his eyes.
There was people yelling and gun fire in the distance and the sound of rapid footsteps but the only noise they focus on was the sound of Erin sniffing and crying. Everyone was so focused on the dead body no one noticed the other group running in their direction.
"No time for mourning, mate!" A voice yelled as the sound of someone landing on the pavement from jumping fills the air for a second as the person jumps over the body, "They're close on our tail feather!"
Chad was pulled to his feet making one side turn then the other side followed, same with Erin. The group quickly turned around and started running for their lives once again not even making a glance at the person who ran with them. They just ran. As they ran, bullets started flying by causing the group to dunk. A few bullets got so close to Chad and Erin that they moved to the sides Chad, Richie, Dan and the unknown strangers to the left while Erin and the rest went to the right. The group chasing them followed them so both group ran into the woods that surrounded the road they were on.
"Chad!" Erin yelled as she noticed he was heading the other way.
"Keep going!" He yelled without stopping, "See you later!"
Erin was dragged away by Diana as she kept her eyes on the brother that was going in the opposite direction.
