Lights of Simon
Red. Green. Yellow. Yellow. Blue...
Adam's hand hovered over the Simon game as he tried to remember what came next in the sequence.
3...2...1... The toy buzzed. Times up.
"Too slow. I win." I moved the game closer to me, but Adam shut it off. "Why don't we make this game more interesting. Let's take it outside."
Without any further explanation, he put on his coat. Five minutes later, we were out in the night standing in the snow. The city glowed like the lights of Simon.
I blew into my hands. "Does this game involve seeing who can freeze faster?"
He gave my arms a quick, warming rub while watching a woman walk her dog across the street. "Tonight, we have no limits. The only rule is to follow each other's lead." Without hesitation, he walked right up to the lady, who happened to be a complete stranger, and got her to take a picture with him and her dog. He came back smiling, presenting his evidence.
This was insane. "I'm not doing that..."
"3...2..."
Competition got the best of me, so I bolted to the first person I saw. Thankfully, the bouncer was friendly.
"Now it's your turn," Adam said.
This was exhilarating. My whole life, I had an extensive list of all the things I wanted to do but never had the bravery to actually see them through. Tonight was different. There was magic in the air and an entire city to conquer. The hardest question was, what did I want to do first?
The answer showed up in the form of a dance studio. We were overdressed and by far the worst dancers in the room, but I would have paid double to see Adam attempt another windmill. Adam's turn sent us to a music store where we launched into a surprise performance of a song entirely improvised on the spot. I think we made a few fans. We posed like sculptures at a college art show while expressing our expert opinions. Performed at a comedy club, earning polite chuckles and a handful of good laughs. Closed our eyes and pointed at random menu items from food trucks where I discovered that spicy ice cream is actually delicious. We even cut live wrestling promos behind a pizza shop trash talking each other while giving our fiercest game face. It would have made a professional shiver.
We ended the night back where we started, but not the same as when we left. We were bigger, bolder, colorful. Adam dropped back in the snow and rested there. "I think I'm falling for you, Desiree."
I spread out my arms and plopped beside him. "Me too." Then I did the one thing I'd been gathering the courage to do all night. I kissed him. He stared back with a pleasant smile on his face. 3...2...1...
"Too slow," I said. "I win."
