He took the eleven o' clock train going anywhere
Harry's last month with the Durselys was extremely boring. Dudley was afraid of him and didn't do as much as glare at him anytime Harry walked by. Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia seemed to think they were being watched and didn't shove Harry back into his cupboard or even give him a ridiculous amount of chores. They just left him alone to his room with his new school books. Harry tried his best to study his textbooks beforehand and even quizzed himself on chapters that seemed important. He didn't want to enter a new world completely clueless.
When the 1st of September came, Harry's relatives dumped him off at the station and sped away before he even had a chance to look back. He loaded his heavy trunk and Hedwig's cage onto a trolley and paced between platforms nine and ten. He kept glancing at his ticket and even thought of asking the guard for help.
'You'd think they'd give you directions..'
Harry parked his trolley in front of a barrier between the two platforms and leaned on it. He hadn't as much of an idea of what to do. He started to wonder if they would even notice if he didn't attend or if he'd be in trouble for not knowing how to get there.
He continued to go over his options of what to do when he felt himself falling backwards. He quickly caught his balance and turned around to see his trolley halfway through the barrier. Curious, Harry pushed his trolley forwards a little more and saw it almost completely vanish. He looked around him and when he saw no one looking, pushed the trolley and himself right through the barrier.
When he pushed through, he was met with a platform packed with people. He looked overhead to see a sign saying 'Hogwarts Express'. He pushed through the crowds of families and somehow dragged his stuff onto the train. He was looking for an empty compartment when he bumped into a boy with orangish hair.
"Sorry, didn't see you there," said the boy, "You're a first year aren't you? Would you mind sitting with me? I don't know anyone yet."
Harry was about to agree and find a compartment with the boy when he heard someone calling his name.
"Harry! Over here, hey!" the familiar voice called.
Harry looked up ahead to see the same pale faced boy from the robes shop. The boy scrunched up his nose and gave Harry a wary look.
"Sorry," Harry told the boy awkwardly while quickly slipping past him. He felt a little ashamed for leaving the boy alone, but he quickly forgot about the incident when he walked into the compartment, stowing away his trunk.
"Nice to see you, Draco," Harry said, setting down Hedwig's cage and sitting down. "Are you excited for school?"
Draco smiled and sat down himself.
"Of course I am! I would be concerned if anyone wasn't excited."
Harry nodded in agreement and looked out the window. There were some remaining kids giving their families hugs and farewells and many kids sticking their heads out the windows to wave at their families. It made Harry feel sad that he didn't have that. He didn't have anyone to see him off or anyone that would miss him while he was gone. He felt his face get redder the more he thought of it.
"Merlin, Harry," said Draco, pulling Harry from his thoughts, "You go red an awful lot. Missing your mum already?"
Harry went, if even possible, redder by the question. He looked up at Draco and gave him a sad smile.
"Both of my parents are dead. Have been since I was a baby..." replied Harry.
Harry saw Draco's face go through a various amount of emotions before he settled with a forced blank expression. Draco put his hand on Harry's arm and looked at him.
"Sorry for your loss," Draco said rather awkwardly, adverting his gaze to the floor.
After Harry assured Draco that it was okay, the compartment door slid open. A pug faced girl and a tall, stringy boy stood in the entryway and looked between Harry and Draco. The pug faced girl spoke first.
"Mind if we squeeze in, Draco? Everywhere else is full," she said while batting her eyelashes.
Harry and Draco both scooted over so the two kids could sit. The silence quickly became awkward and they all looked at Draco expectantly.
Draco cleared his throat and gestured at Harry.
"Oh, uh, Harry this is Pansy and Theodore. Pansy and Theodore, this is Harry," he awkwardly explained.
The boy Draco introduced as Theodore looked Harry over before widening his eyes. The girl Draco said to be Pansy did the same.
"Great Merlin! Harry Potter is it? I heard some kids saying you'd be here this year, but I'm not one to usually feed off of the gossip," Theodore said while giving Pansy a look.
Draco's jaw dropped and he looked at Harry.
"You didn't tell me you're Harry Potter!"
Harry still didn't understand why people felt the need to gawk at him. Hagrid tried his best to explain why and how he is famous, but all he got from the explanation was that he defeated some dark wizard when he was a baby. He saw that they were still gawking at him so he just smiled.
"Sorry," he said, "But you never did ask. I still don't even understand how everyone knows my name or why a bunch of people acted like I was some kind of savior when I was at Diagon Alley."
Pansy, Theodore, and Draco all looked like they were having a silent conversation before Theodore spoke to Harry.
"So, Harry," he started, "you mean to tell me that you don't know your own story? You were never told of how you defeated the Dark Lord?"
Harry shook his head.
"Well then, I guess we'll have to tell you. Merlin, Harry, it's almost as if you were raised by Muggles! Every witch and wizard has heard your story at least ten times."
And so, Theodore told Harry the story of what happened with the help of Draco and Pansy. Harry found the story quite interesting and had to keep reminding himself that the story was about him. He never really thought he could ever be an interesting person, yet he never thought he'd ever be a wizard and here he was.
After Theodore told him the story and practically begged Harry to call him Theo instead, the four of them spent their time joking around and telling stories. Pansy came off as a bit snooty and flirtatious while Theo came off as well mannered and intelligent. Harry also noticed that Pansy seemed to glare at him anytime he spoke to Draco. He found it odd, but brushed it off telling himself that it was probably just her face. Harry also learned that they all expected to be sorted into Slytherin and that they thought he'd be too.
An old witch eventually came by their compartment, asking if they wanted anything from the candy trolley and Harry was hardly able to contain himself. He bought almost one of everything and sat back down, ignoring the odd looks the others were giving him.
Not long after, a pudgy faced boy and a bushy haired girl slid open their compartment door. The girl stuck out her nose and addressed them with a bossy tone.
"Have any of you seen a toad? Neville here lost his," she said with authority in her voice. Harry couldn't help but feel bad for the poor boy as he seemed fairly embarrassed by the whole situation.
Pansy was the first to answer them, but didn't seem very happy to do so.
"No we have not seen your toad, and, quite frankly, you should be happy you lost it! Toads are so outdated as pets and are just extremely gross."
The girl didn't say anything else as she glared at them and slammed the door. They all could hear her complaining about them as she walked down the rest of the aisle with Neville in her grip.
Harry stared at the door before turning to Pansy and raising an eyebrow.
"Couldn't you have, I don't know, been a little nicer to them?" Harry asked. "I know she seemed bossy and all, but you didn't have to be completely rude to them. A simple 'no' would've sent them away without making them mad."
Beside him, Theo laughed and slapped his knee. Draco also chuckled while pansy just rolled her eyes.
"The day Pansy is nice to someone without being a flirt would clearly be the sign of an apocalypse," Theo laughed.
Pansy tried to hastily change the subject, but ended up making Theo and Draco laugh even more. She eventually got them to stop by punching them both in the arm and twisting their ears. Harry couldn't help but chuckle at the sight and put his hands up when Pansy glared at him.
Time pretty much flew by and before they knew it, it was time to depart from the train. Harry quickly changed into his robes and they all walked off the train and stepped into a dark, tiny platform. Harry shivered in the cold night air and was relieved to hear Hagrid's voice directing them on where to go.
"Firs' years! Firs' years over here! All right there, Harry?"
Harry smiled and nodded up at Hagrid.
"C'mon, follow me- any more firs' years? Mind yer step, now! Firs' years follow me!"
Nobody spoke much. There was muffled giggling here and there and a few nervous whispers between friends, but not much.
"Yeh'll get yer firs' sight o' Hogwarts in a sec,"Hagrid called over his shoulder, "jus' round this bend here."
There was a chorus of "Oooohs," when a vast castle with many turrets and towers came into view. It stood on the edge of a great black lake and was probably the most beautiful thing Harry had ever seen before.
"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in the water by the shore. Harry, Draco, Theo, and Pansy all hopped into one together and when everyone was situated, the boats moved forward towards the castle.
When they all got off the boats, Hagrid led them up a flight of steps and in front of a huge, oak door.
As they waited to enter the castle, Harry turned to Draco.
"How exactly do we get sorted? I just heard someone say we have to wrestle a troll," Harry told Draco.
Draco scoffed and shook his head.
"Honestly, the things that people come up with... Don't worry, all that happens is you have to wear a hat and the hat shouts whatever house you seem best fitted for. It sort of reads your mind if I remember right."
Having his mind read didn't really make Harry feel any better, but it was a giant relief that they didn't have to wrestle a troll. Harry wondered what idiot came up with that.
