Death anniversaries and troll stench ought to ruin anyone's day
Harry was surprised at how fast time was flying by. He had been so focused on his studies and on Quidditch practice that he didn't even believe his eyes when he saw that October was almost over on the calendar. Hogwarts had felt more like a home these past two months than Privet Drive ever has in the past ten years. Harry was feeling kind of disappointed that the time was going by so fast. He felt that if he blinks then the school year will have ended and he'd be forced back to Privet Drive.
School work was also getting a bit more difficult. In most of their classes, the basics had been covered and the students were moving on to more difficult material. Harry struggled a bit in Transfiguration and to his surprise, was getting decent marks in Potions. He found it quite easy being paired with Draco. With Harry's acquired chopping and measuring skills he obtained from years cooking for the Dursleys, and Draco's overall gift in the subject and good reading skills, the two of them were proud to say that Potions was their best subject.
Harry, like everyone else, woke to the delicious smell of baking pumpkin on Halloween morning. Harry was very excited for the feast scheduled in the evening and wondered if the glorious smells would be wafting through the air in the classrooms, too.
"Good Morning, Draco!" Harry exclaimed, throwing back his friend's curtains.
Draco groaned and chucked a pillow at him. Harry retrieved the pillow and lightly smacked Draco with it. Draco grabbed his other pillow and launched at Harry, beating him with it until they were both giggling and breathing hard. Theo then walked out of the bathroom with his toothbrush hanging out of his mouth and made a face that just said, 'why?' Harry chucked his pillow at Theo and the dorm suddenly turned into a battlefield. All of the boys in the dorm started beating each other with pillows and jumping across the beds. Bedding was scattered everywhere and the dorm was looking like an overall disaster.
Suddenly, the door to the dorm was slammed open and Fenston came rushing in with his wand pointed ahead. He took one look at the boys and immediately turned his serious face into a look much more resembling a scowl.
"Must you boys act in such an immature manner? Your banging and hollering can be heard throughout all of the other dorms!" He scolded.
They all mumbled an apology and got off of the beds to start picking everything up. Fenston seemed satisfied with what they were doing and swiftly nodded, walking out of the dorm. Blaise stuck his tongue out at the back of his head and everyone else giggled.
"My toothbrush..." Theo sad sadly as he picked it up off the ground. Greg had crushed it with his foot during the pillow fight when he jumped off of his bed at some point.
Draco rolled his eyes and continued rearranging his pillows on his bed, ordering Greg to make his own bed too. He scoffed when he saw how Harry was making his bed and immediately rushed over to his friend.
"Honestly, Potter! Have you never made a bed? One would think you've never had a bed before if they saw the state your bed-making skills are in!" Draco exclaimed, immediately redoing Harry's work.
"Well.." Harry mumbled, handing Draco a pillow.
Once Draco was satisfied with the way the bed looked, he marched off to the bathroom to get a start on his morning routine.
After getting the whole dorm situated and looking nice, the boys all headed down to breakfast. They all sat down and ignored the odd looks the girls were giving them. Harry was munching on a piece of toast when he felt someone touch him. He looked over to see Pansy's hand on his. He tilted his head and raised his eyebrow at her. She doesn't do as much as say hello to him let alone touch him.
"Harry," she started, "It's completely alright if you skip out on class today. I know I probably should've ditched classes on the anniversary of my cousin's death. Her and I were pretty close and it really hurt me to go through the day as if it were normal instead of taking the day to remember her. We'll cover for you if you'd like to skip today."
The rest of the Slytherin first years were giving Pansy a look that basically said to shut up. Harry didn't notice, however, as he was very confused on what Pansy had told him.
"I don't understand what you mean," he said slowly, "Am I missing something?"
Everyone around him seemed to be having a very heated silent discussion. Harry thought more about Pansy's words and eventually gasped in realization.
"Are you- Are you trying to tell me that today is the day my parents were killed?" He asked with uncertainty in his voice.
The first years all had wide eyes and looked at one another. Blaise eventually broke the uncomfortable silence.
"You mean you don't know the day of your parents death?" He asked.
Harry shook his head and looked over at Theo.
"But- But we told you about the day they were killed! Remember how we told you the story on the train ride here?" Theo said, baffled.
"You told me about the day, but you never told me which day!" Harry practically yelled.
Theo gave him a sad look and tried to apologize, but Harry ignored him and got up.
"It's Pansy you should be mad at!" Draco told him. "No need to get hasty with the rest of us."
Harry turned to Draco and shook his head.
"I'm not angry... I just.. Need to to be alone for a little while. I'll see you later," he explained and walked out of the Hall before anything more could be said.
Everyone turned to Pansy and glared at her.
"Way to go, Parkinson. You made Harry upset," Blaise said.
"Yeah you should have gone at it another way," Millicent added.
Pansy shook her head and scoffed.
"It's not my fault he didn't know! I thought the day his parents died was common knowledge and he'd already know," she defended herself. "I'm hardly at fault here. All I did was try to be nice for a change."
Draco rolled his eyes and stared at the spot Harry was sitting at. He felt kind of bad for Harry and hoped he would be okay.
~le time skip~
Harry never showed up to any of their classes and wasn't in dorms when they checked. Lily said he needed space and should probably be left alone, but Draco was worried about him and had the itching feeling that something bad was going to happen.
By the time they were all seated at the feast, everyone had become really worried about Harry's whereabouts. He wasn't at the feast and even people from other houses hadn't seen him throughout the day.
They all had just began to tuck into their dinner when Professor Quirrell came sprinting into the hall, his turban askew and terror on his face. Everyone stared as he reached Dumbledore's place at the table and gasped, "Troll- in the dungeons- thought you ought to know."
He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.
There was an uproar. It took several purple firecrackers exploding from the ends of Professor Dumbledore's wand to bring the hall into silence.
"Prefects," he rumbled, "lead your Houses back to the dormitories immediately! The rest of the staff, follow me!"
Gemma and Fenston both bolted out of their seats and started yelling out orders and directions.
"Wait!" Draco yelled, yanking on Tracey's arm. "The troll is in the dungeons! Ya know, the place where we've been directed to head to!"
Tracey immediately started hyperventilating and started to warn the others of what Draco told her. The Slytherins were all in an order of chaos. Gemma expressed her concern to a passing Professor and was informed to stay in the Hall instead. The Slytherins all sat down, anxious, yet excited, of what would happen next.
Draco was just about to slump back down in his seat when something dawned on him. He cursed to himself and sprinted over to Brenna.
"Gemma! Harry is missing! He never showed up to the feast! What if the troll gets to him?" He expressed loudly, concern evident in his voice.
She gasped and started to go over all of her options of what to do. She didn't get a chance to tell Draco her advice as Draco just booked it out of the Hall. He needed to find Harry and warn him about the troll. He decided to try the bathrooms He jostled his way through a crowd of Hufflepuffs and turned down a side corridor. He heard a shriek from one of the girl's bathrooms and immediately set off in that direction. He skidded to a halt in front of the one girl's bathroom and raced in their when he heard Harry's voice.
"Ahhhh!"
"Harry don't worry I'm here!" Draco yelled.
When he got into the bathroom, he saw Harry and the Granger girl huddling together in a corner; Harry was shielding her behind his back. The troll was in front of them and had its large club held in the air. They were both screaming and Draco knew he had to act fast before the troll brought its club down on them.
He started firing spells left and right at the troll. It howled in pain at one of the ones he shot and flung his club opposite from them. Draco saw an opportunity and used the levitating charm to lift up the club and drop it right on its head. The troll swayed on spot and Draco saw that it was about to fall right on top of Harry and Granger.
"Run! Merlin, run!" He shouted at them.
Harry immediately grabbed Granger and sprinted with her out of the way of the falling troll. It fell on its face with a thud not even seconds after they moved from the spot. They were all breathing heavily and were shaking.
"Is- Is it dead?" Granger asked with a shaky voice.
"No. I think it's just knocked out," Harry said, shaking his head.
A moment later, the sudden slamming of loud footsteps echoed and Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape came bursting into the room, closely followed by Quirrell. Quirrell took one look at the troll and clutched his heart, slumping against one of the stalls.
Snape immediately went to examine the troll as McGonagall looked over at the three of them. She was fuming and her lips were very white.
"What on earth were you thinking?" Professor McGonagall demanded, cold fury in her voice. "You're lucky you weren't killed. Why aren't you in your dormitories?"
Professor Snape came over and stood next to McGonagall. He gave both of the boys a peircing look and had his lip curled up.
"Yes, I'd like to know as well," he agreed.
Draco looked at the two shaking people beside him and sighed.
"I came in search of Harry because he was absent from the feast and hadn't known about the troll. I don't know why either of them were in here, though," he told them.
Granger opened her mouth to speak, but Harry started talking before she could start.
"I skipped out on classes today because I was upset about learning that today's the day my parents died. I found Hermione crying after Weasley made fun of her and we spent half the day comforting each other. We both were on our way to the feast when the troll came running towards us. We raced into the nearest room and that happened to be this bathroom here. If it wasn't for Draco finding us, it would have torn us to shreds," he explained, looking down at his feet.
McGonagall's expression softened slightly and she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I'm getting far too old for this," she muttered to herself, "I suppose I'll award Slytherin twenty points for Mr. Malfoy's heroic deed."
Draco and Harry nodded in amusement, but Snape just raised his eyebrows.
"Twenty? I'd say fifty ought to be awarded. He is only eleven and saved two students from an unfortunate death against something that's so many times his size!" He said.
Professor McGonagall sighed and shook her head.
"Fine. Thirty more points to Slytherin. There, Severus. You got your fifty points, now can you please escort your students back to their dormitories as I will with mine," she said before adding, "and Quirinus, please get up off the ground and do something productive."
Before she left with McGonagall, Hermione smiled at the two Slytherins and thanked Draco. They both stood there and stared at the troll before Snape shook their shoulders.
"Come along, then. You need to be back in the dormitories where you belong," he said and leaded them out of there.
Harry was still shaking and Draco but his arm around him.
"Are you okay?" He whispered in his ear.
Harry nodded and they all continued walking down to the dungeons. Harry was glad to have a friend like Draco and even though Draco probably wouldn't admit it out loud, he was glad to have Harry as a friend, too.
