Chapter 23

I was awoken by warm hands on my face and creaked my eyes open to see Calum standing above me. He had something white in his hands and he put it against my forehead before he turned off the lamp and left again, and I fell back asleep.

When I woke up again I needed to go to the bathroom, so I listened for noises and heard the television in the living room playing.

"Calum?" I called out and a few moments later he appeared in the doorway.

"Hey, you good?"

"Can you carry me to the bathroom again?" I asked him.

"Yeah." He said and came forward, flipping back my blanket and lifting me up.

He did the same thing he did yesterday and when I was done he began to carry me back to the bed.

"Wait, I want to go to the living room." I said and he turned around to carry me that way. I held my wrist to my chest to protect it and he laid me down on the sofa before getting a pillow to prop underneath my leg.

"I'll get you some ice for your arm." He said. "Do you want anything else?"

"Coffee?"

"Sure."

He left and I heard him moving things in the kitchen before he came back with two cups of coffee and then went back for the ice pack.

"Thanks." I said.

There wasn't anywhere else to sit so Calum sat on the ground in front of me after setting the ice pack on my wrist.

"You can sit up here and put my head in your lap." I suggested.

He then stood up and lifted my head so he could sit. I then laid my head in his lap, adjusting it so I was comfortable. And after a few minutes I felt his fingers begin to run through my hair.

I looked up at him with a smile and he looked down, a blush coming to his cheeks.

"This relaxes you, right?"

"Mhmm." I nodded, closing my eyes.

His fingers then brushed across my face and went back to my hair. The gesture was so sweet, and I finally let go of the anger I had been holding against him.

"Why did we ever breakup?" I mumbled and heard him laugh above me.

"Well, I believe it's because I royally pissed you off because I left you stranded on the side of the road overnight."

"Oh yeah." I said. "I overreacted."

"No, you had every right to be mad at me, and you were right about a lot of things."

"Like what?" I opened my eyes, him connecting our gazes.

"Like that I wasn't ready for a relationship, and that I needed to get my priorities together if I wanted to be in one."

"And now?"

"Now I've done some thinking and i'm ready for commitment."

"If you asked me out again i'd say yes."

"Okay, I think this medicine is making you loopy." He laughed.

"Probably." I smiled. "But if you wanted, you could ask me."

"Yeah?" He smiled in amusement at my high state.

"Mhmm. I miss kissing you."

"Alright, that's enough of this conversation." He laughed awkwardly and I closed my eyes again.

It was quiet as Calum kept touching my face as he watched television.

"Calum, I really need to take a shower." I said.

"Okay. Let me set it up."

"Set it up?"

"Yeah. I brought a chair for you sit in when you shower." He said and then slid out from under me so he could do whatever he needed to do.

Five minutes later he came back to carry me to the bathroom.

"Alright, first you need to get undressed."

"But you can't see me naked."

"Well then how do you propose we do this?"

"I don't know."

"If you're not comfortable I can call Kate to come help you."

"I can do it myself."

"No you can't." He shook his head. "You have a broken wrist and a broken leg, you cant walk, and can't stand up."

"Fine then." I sighed.

He set me on the counter and started with my shirt, carefully taking it off before helping me get my bra off.

I could see him trying not to look at me as he then had to move to my shorts.

"Lift up on three." He said and then counted.

I lifted my bottom off the counter and he slid my shorts and panties off me, gently moving them around my broken leg.

He then looked at me and I tried to cover myself up to no avail.

He had to lift me again to set me in a chair in the shower.

"Alright, tell me when you're done." He said and then left the bathroom to give me some privacy.

I turned on the water and then washed my hair one handed and then shaved my arms and legs, very carefully I might add.

I then turned the water off and called for Calum.

He came in with a towel and some clothes in his hands.

Calum opened the shower door and threw me the towel so he could set the clothes on the counter and then came back, wrapping me up in the towel and then lifting me up to set me on the counter again.

"Alright, I have a bra, a tee shirt, some of those soft fabric shorts, and some underwear. Is this good?" He asked.

"Yeah." I said. He gave me the bra to put on first and I got it on but needed him to do the clasp in the back.

"Can you get the clasp?" I asked him and he turned me sideways so he could get it.

Next we did underwear and shorts which was mortifying, and then I put on the tee shirt before brushing my teeth.

"It's time for your medicine." Calum then picked me up and carried me to my bed.

"I'll go get it." He then left.

When he did I took my phone and texted Kate.

'You haven't experienced true embarrassment until your ex boyfriend has to help undress and dress you.'

'OMG NOOOOO!!!!!' Kate replied.

'He kept looking at me!!'

'You're a hot naked woman, what did you expect him to do?! Lol'

'I don't know, this is just too weird. Please come see me and save me from this for a little bit!!'

'I'll come over after work!'

"Alright i've got your medicine." Calum's voice brought me away from my phone and I locked it before setting it down.

"Dawson called you last night and I answered." Calum said as he noticed my phone. "He wanted you to call him back."

"Yeah, i'll do that soon." I said and he nodded before dropping the pills in my hand and giving me the cup of water.

"Did you tell him about the accident?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"He asked if you were okay and I told him your injuries."

I nodded in response.

He then leaned in closer to me, his mouth very close to mine and before I knew what was happening I was kissing him.

He stopped moving as our lips touched, and I could feel the warmth on them.

Out of surprise I pulled back and then realized he had only leaned in to look at the bandage on my head. Calum was frozen above me and I was then being suffocated by guilt and shock.

"I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me." I apologized.

Calum moved back and didn't make eye contact.

"It's fine. It's the medicine." He said before walking out of the room.

I felt horrible.

I had really misjudged that situation.

Maybe he was right, maybe it was the medicine. Because the Nessa two days ago wouldn't have kissed him.

But I was feeling something for him. I guess I just wasn't completely over him yet.

Closing my eyes I turned my head to the side and tried to get some sleep, the medicine already making me drowsy.

I knocked out within the next few minutes, and the next time I awoke I laid there with my eyes closed, too tired to open them.

I could hear voices and footsteps and soon they entered my room.

"She's been knocked out since breakfast. She started crying in her sleep and I thought she had hurt herself or something but she just mumbled nonsense so I gave her more tylenol."

"How is she doing?" Kate's voice asked.

"She's doing okay. She has a doctors appointment tomorrow so she can get her wrist looked at and Michael is bringing by the wheel chair in the morning."

"And how are you doing?" She then asked.

"Fine."

"If it's too hard for you to be around her I can  take over."

"No that's not it, it's that I want to be around her, and I think she might want the same. She's stopped fighting me and she started saying stuff and then she kissed me."

"She kissed you?"

"Yeah. I don't know if she meant it or not."

"Talk to her Calum. You need to."

"I know."

"I'll see if I can wake her up." Kate then said and I heard her come closer before I felt her hands on my shoulders.

"Nessa, hey it's me. Wake up." I opened my eyes to see her and she smiled. "Hey, how you feeling?"

"I'm okay." I said.

I then went to sit up and Calum them moved forward to help me. He put his hands on my waist and back to help me sit up and then he stepped back.

"I'll leave you ladies alone." He said and then backed out of the room.

"So you kissed Calum, huh?" Kate immediately said and I groaned.

"I didn't mean to. It just happened."

"No one ever means to kiss their ex after they've broken up." She said and I rolled my eyes. "Tell me what's really going on, Ness."

"I guess, maybe his being here has made me realise that I missed having him around." I admitted.

"Then get back together with him."

"It's not that easy. I'm not mad at him anymore but i'm scared of him acting like he did when Meredith's parents told him they hated me if we get back together."

"Calum feels awful about it Nessa. And all he wants to do is make this right with you, but you have to give him a chance. So will you at least talk to him about that?"

"He probably doesn't even want to get back together with me." I shook my head.

"I think he does. And I think he wants to talk to you too."

I nodded and she patted my good leg.

Kate stayed for a little longer and braided my hair for me until she had to go.

When she left Calum came in with my medicine and some water.

I took the pills and then he began to leave but I stopped him.

"Calum can you close the door? I can't sleep with it open." I asked him.

"Well if it's closed I won't be able to hear you if you call for me."

"I can't sleep if it's open." I repeated and he sighed. "Just sleep in here." I suggested.

"Nessa..."

"Please?" I asked him and he sighed before nodding.

He left the room and then came back in his night clothes.

He shut the door and then walked to the other side of the bed before getting in. He got comfortable and laid down, keeping as much distance between us as he could.

"Can we talk about what happened earlier?" He said after a minute.

"I'm sorry I kissed you. I read the situation wrong." I apologized.

"But still...you felt like kissing me was the right thing to do."

"I'm sorry. I know you don't feel that way anymore."

"I never said that."

I turned my head to the side to look at him and saw him watching me.

"But I think we should have this conversation when you're not all doped up on pain meds."

"I...yeah you're probably right."

He smiled at this.

"Get some sleep, Ness."

I closed my eyes and nestled my head into the pillow, allowing the medication to take over before falling asleep.

When I awoke I could hear snoring and looked to my left to see Calum passed out asleep.

I needed to use the restroom and so I reached across the bed and shoved on his shoulder.

"Calum. Calum, wake up."

His snores stoped and he opened his eyes, focusing on me.

"Hey." He yawned.

"I'm sorry to wake you, but I really need to use the bathroom."

"Oh. Yeah." He sat up and shook his head to wake himself up before coming over to my side of the bed and lifting me up.

He carried me to the bathroom and let me do what I needed to do before carrying me back to the bedroom.

He set me down on the bed and then looked at the clock.

"Your doctors appointment is at 10:00." He spoke. "I'll make us breakfast and then we can get ready and go."

"Can you take me to the kitchen?"

"You know, carrying you around is a pretty good workout." He joked as he picked me up.

"Shut up." I rolled my eyes and he laughed as he took me to the kitchen.

He sat me down at the table and used another chair to prop my leg up.

I couldn't take my eyes off Calum as I watched him start the coffee maker and then pull out some eggs and bacon from the fridge to start making us breakfast.

"Michael will stop by before we leave and he said he spoke to doctors and they recommend you use a wheel chair for now." He said as he cracked an egg in a hot pan.

"Ugh." I sighed.

"Sorry. I know it sucks."

"So what about my car?"

"The insurance company called yesterday and i'm pretty sure you're getting a brand new car."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"That's great."

"It is, but you're still injured."

I nodded.

Calum walked over and handed me a cup of coffee and some tylenol.

"Thank you." I smiled at him.

He went back and made us each a plate of bacon, eggs, and toast and brought them to the table.

We began to eat and the tension in the air was weird, and I finally caved.

"So do we want to talk about what was said last night?" I asked him.

He slowly set down his fork and then looked at me.

"Nessa, I took my anger at Meredith's parents out on you, and when you broke up with me I was upset but I understood. But I never stopped having feelings for you. And I'm so sorry. I haven't forgiven myself for treating you that way."

"I know."

"If you want to be friends then we can do that, and if you want to be more then I obviously don't have any objections," He said and I giggled, "but I guess this is up to you."

"I think that maybe it wasn't our time then, and we learned a lot from that situation, and I would be open to trying us again."

He smiled at this.

Maybe I was making a mistake, and maybe I wasn't, but all I knew is that right at the moment I needed someone, and that someone was Calum.

He was sorry, I knew it, and I felt like trying us again might help us get back in a good place, whether we stayed together or not.

"Would asking you to be my girlfriend again while we are eating breakfast and you have a broken leg and wrist be too strange?" He smirked at me and I couldn't fight a smile.

"I think it would be perfect."

He grinned and then leaned across the table to place his hands on my cheeks and connect our lips.

I happily accepted it and kissed him back.

This felt so right, and I couldn't stop myself from melting into him.

His kiss was so comforting, and I could feel an apology between every kiss.

He truly was sorry, and I believed he had learned from his mistake.

"Well i'd say i'm shocked but let's be honest, we all knew this was going to happen."

Calum and I yanked apart to see Michael standing there in my kitchen.

"So, how's the happy couple?" He smirked at us and I went to hide my blushing cheeks in my one good hand.

"Leave her alone." Calum stood up from the table.

"Just asking."

"Whatever. Um, i'll get her ready and then we can go." Calum came over and picked me up, taking me to my bedroom.

He grabbed me some track shorts and a tee shirt and helped dress me before helping me put my hair in a ponytail. I brushed my teeth, and put on mascara before Calum took me to Michael who began to put my wrist in a brace while Calum went to get ready.

"So you and Calum are back together, huh?" He asked me as he adjusted the brace.

"Yes."

"Good. I'm happy for you guys." He smiled at me.

Ten minutes later Calum came out of the guest room.

"Ready to go?" He asked and I nodded.

Calum lifted me up and carried me out to his car.

Michael put the wheelchair in the back while Calum moved the seat all the way back and set me in the front.

It hurt when he touched my leg and I whined.

"Sorry, sorry." He apologized profusely.

Michael said goodbye and then Calum proceeded to drive us to the hospital.

When we arrived he parked and then got out the wheelchair and then opened my door so he could get me out and set me in it.

He had to use the foot rest to extend my leg, and then rolled me into the hospital. He took us up to the fourth floor and down to a doctors office.

He rolled me into a corner of the waiting room and then went up to the counter.

"I have Nessa Rothchester." He said and the receptionist handed him a clipboard with papers to fill out.

He came back over to me and sat down next to me.

He began to fill out the forms for me and
I watched over his arm.

"Okay, on a scale from one to ten how would you rank the pain in your leg." He asked.

"Well with medication it's about a seven, without its about a twenty."

"Ah, alright." He said and wrote it all down for me. "Okay, I need your social, and your family's medical history."

I found the fake social security number Dawson had given me and told him that before explaining that my dad had had a heart attack and I had no clue about my mom.

He then gave the papers back to the receptionist.

Calum and I were quiet as we waited.

"Ms. Rothchester." A nurse opened a door and called my name, and Calum rolled me to her and down a hallway to a consultation room where Calum set me on the table.

The nurse took my blood pressure before saying the doctor would be there soon.

"So can you explain the car accident to me again?" I asked Calum.

"Luke and I were on duty and someone reported an accident. We were the first on scene. I was talking with the driver of one car and she said there was a girl inside the car that crushed in between the two cars, and Luke ran over there to see it was you. We had to move this lady's Buick because it had crushed the drivers side door, and once we moved it away we opened the door and then the ambulance arrived and we moved you out and got you in the bus. I went with you to the hospital and Luke stayed on scene to investigate, and so the guy who was driving the truck was texting and moved into your lane, pushing you into the car in the lane next to you."

"Wow." I breathed.

"It wasn't pretty...actually it was terrifying. It scared the hell out of me."

"Me too." I said and he started to laugh.

"I've really missed you Ness." He looked at me in such joy.

"I've missed you too."

The door opened and the nurse walked in.

"I'm here to take you back for an x-ray." She said and Calum stood up to put me back in my wheelchair.

Calum rolled me down the hallway to the x-ray room and then set me on the table. He then went to wait outside while the technician set me up and began to take the photos.

When she was done she let Calum back in so he could put me in the wheelchair and take me back to the consultation room where he put me back in the table.

"Sorry you have to keep lifting me." I apologized.

"It's fine." He smiled. "I don't mind."

Suddenly the door opened and who must be my doctor stepped in.

"Ms. Rothchester, I'm Dr. Harrison." The man introduced himself to me. "Let's take a look at how your leg is healing up."

He began to put the x-rays on the viewing screen and made an odd face.

"Ms. Rothchester did you fall in the last few days?" He asked and I looked at Calum.

"I left to go to the grocery store and she woke up and tried to get water from the kitchen and fell, and then she fell off the bed and broke her wrist."

"I can see that. The bones in the leg have shifted and they're not set properly to heal."

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"It means we need to reset the bones."

"That sounds painful." I whimpered nervously.

"Well you'll be under anesthesia."

"So she needs surgery?" Calum asks.

"Yes. That was a concern when you were first brought in to the hospital, but this only confirms it."

I looked at Calum in shock.

"I'll schedule you for tomorrow morning and we can get this leg healing properly." Dr. Harrison said.

"Thank you, doctor." Calum said and Dr. Harrison waved before leaving.

I was quiet as Calum put me in the wheelchair again and signed me out before taking us to the car.

"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked after we were on our way to my house.

"I'm terrified. I've never had surgery." I said.

"I know you're scared." He tried to comfort me. "I once had to have surgery when I broke my arm, and I was terrified too, but it all worked out. You're going to be just fine, I promise you."

"Are you going to go with me?" I asked him.

"Yes." He chuckled. "I'll be there the whole time."

When we got to my house he took me inside and rested me on the couch before making us lunch.

I had to take my medicine and knocked out after that and didn't wake up again until dinner.

"Cal!" I called out when I woke up and he walked into the room.

"Bathroom?" He asked.

"Yes. And a shower please."

"Yes ma'am." He kissed my forehead before going to set it all up.

This felt nice.

First he let me go to the restroom before helping me get undressed.

"Stop staring at my boobs." I commented as he began to tug my shorts down.

"You know what?" He looked up at me with a smirk. "I have to undress you every day and you're finally my girlfriend again yet we can't have makeup sex. Give me a break."

I smiled at him and brushed my hand across his cheek.

"Okay, you can't take too long because the doctors office called and you can't eat anything after 7:00 tonight."

"Ugh. I hate this already."

"I know." He then kissed me. "Come on."

He then set me on the chair in the shower again before heading out.

"Yell for when you're done. Oh, and your boobs look great by the way." He winked.

"Calum!" I blushed but he just laughed as he walked out.

I just shook my head and started the water, cleaning off.

I had to wash my hair one handed again which was super frustrating and shaved before turning off the water and calling Calum back in.

"There's those boobs!" He grinned as he walked in the bathroom and I groaned.

"Stop!" I whined as he opened the shower door and he just smirked as he gave me a towel to dry off.

"I made us homemade pizza for dinner." He said as he helped re-dress me.

"How fancy." I smiled.

"Only the best for you."

Once I was dressed he set me in the wheelchair and rolled me to the kitchen where dinner was on the table.

"Best boyfriend ever." I said after taking a bite.

"I'm trying to redeem myself." He smiled.

"Well you're doing a great job."

He and I finished dinner and then Calum wheeled me back to the bedroom before getting me in the bed.

Calum went in the other room to change clothes before coming back in with my medicine.

I swallowed the pill before getting comfortable next to Calum. He laid closer to me tonight, and I was reminded of the nights we had spent together before we broke up.

"Goodnight, Ness." Calum said.

"Night." I looked at him and smiled before allowing the medicine to knock me out.

I awoke to noises and movement in my bedroom.

I could hear Calum moving around the room and I opened my eyes to see him coming out of the bathroom, drying off his wet hair with a towel.

"Hey." He gave me a little smile.

"Hi." I said.

After he got ready he helped me get into the wheel chair before taking me out to the car.

He had a bag packed of my things and set that in the back seat.

I was silent as we drove to the hospital and Calum could sense my anxiety and rubbed my shoulder comfortingly.

When we arrived he put me in the wheelchair, set the bag in my lap, and then took us inside.

"I have Nessa Rothchester. She has a surgery scheduled for 7:00." He said to the nurse at the counter.

Soon I was taken back to a room where I was put in the hospital gown.

They began to run tests and Calum sat in the extra chair in the room while they did.

As they were taking my blood pressure and temperature, Kate, Michael, Luke, and Ashton walked into my room.

"What are you guys doing here?" I asked.

"We wanted to see you off." Kate smiled and took my hand.

"Thank you." I smiled.

"How are you feeling?" Michael asked.

"Terrified."

"You'll be fine."

"Ms. Rothchester, it's time." A nurse then said and I looked at Calum.

"Guys, let them have a moment." Kate said and they nodded. "We'll be in the waiting room."

They all waved and told me goodbye before leaving.

"Calum I'm really scared." I said with wide eyes as he came up to me.

"I know honey, but it's going to be okay."

"But what if I don't wake up?"

"You're going to wake up. I promise you."

I nodded as he wiped at the corners of my eyes where I felt my tears were spilling.

"I'll be right here when you get out of surgery and i'll be the first face you see when you wake up. Alright?"

"Okay."

"Okay." He smiled. "You'll be fine."

"I'll be fine."

He pressed a kiss to my lips before moving back so the nurses could move me.

I looked back at Calum as I was being wheeled out to see him smiling at me.

I lost sight of him as we turned a corner and then I closed my eyes, trying to relax.

Soon I was taken in the operating room where they put the mask over my face so they could put me to sleep, and the last thing I saw was the bright light.

--

They're back! But was it a moment o weakness for Nessa or will this be exactly what they both need?

And also to those of you who have added this story to your reading lists I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart! If truly means so much to me!

More to come!

Much love xx-m
