Chapter 22

Calum's PoV:

The moment the ambulance arrived at the hospital Nessa was taken back for x-rays.

I was sent to a room to wait for her while Michael went with the doctor.

Nurses came in and out to prepare the room for Nessa and and twenty minutes later she was wheeled in, a doctor and Michael in tow.

"Is she okay?" I asked them both.

"Just a broken leg, thankfully, her ribs look fine." Michael said as he put the x-rays up on the screen so I could see them.

I stepped up to look.

By the way her bones looked in her left leg, I could tell it was broken.

"Damn." I sighed.

I then heard crying and turned around to see Nessa waking up, and she was obviously in pain.

Nurses then began to work over her, blocking my view as I tried to step forward to see her.

Michael moved in to help, and I watched as they put Nessa on an IV, putting her on a morphine drip to ease her pain while other nurses went to stabilise her leg.

Nessa calmed down and her crying ceased, and when they stepped away I saw her now sleeping.

A nurse then went to take care of the cut on her head.

The sound of my phone ringing shook me from staring at Nessa's broken body and I pulled it from my pocket, answering it.

"Hello?"

"Hey."

It was Luke.

"How's everything at the scene?"

"I'll tell you in a second. First, how's Nessa?"

"She has a broken leg but everything else looks fine."

"Well I have news. The guy in the truck. Guess what? He was texting. Drove right into Nessa and pushed her into the other lane where she hit that car."

"Are you serious?!" I half yelled.

"Yeah. Taking him down to the station now to book him."

"I want to talk to him." I growled.

"Are you sure that's the best idea?"

"Yes. I'll be there as soon as I can."

I hung up and then shoved my phone in my pocket.

"What is it?" Michael asked.

"The guy who hit her was texting." I said and his eyes went wide.

"Nessa will be knocked out for awhile. I can take you to the station."

"She'll be okay here alone?" I got quieter.

"We can call Kate to keep and eye on her. Come on, let's go."

I looked back at Nessa who was knocked out and followed Michael out of her room.

I called Kate on our way to the station who freaked out and said she'd rush to the hospital.

But as we drove my anger at the asshole who had caused this grew, and so when we arrived at the station I stormed through the doors and to the room where Luke and Captain Sutherland were talking with the guy.

"Calum, calm down." Luke stopped me as soon as I whipped open the door.

"YOU COULD'VE KILLED HER!" I shouted at the guy and Captain Sutherland stood up to keep me back as well.

"Calum, go to your office." Captain Sutherland pushed me back and I stormed away and to my office, slamming the door shut behind me.

I fell back in my chair and took a deep breath, and a moment later my door opened and Captain Sutherland stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"You alright, son?" He asked me as he sat down on my desk.

"Nessa was in the car he hit." I said.

"I know." He gave me a small smile. "I was under the impression that you two were no longer an item."

"We're not...but that doesn't mean I don't care about her."

He nodded.

"It must not be easy since she's the first woman after Meredith." He said.

"That's not it." I shook my head. "It's that unlike Meredith she cared about me, and I screwed it up. And now I might never have the chance to fix things with her."

"Well, if you believe there's still a chance then go to her. Don't leave her side. Let Luke and I handle the guy here."

I nodded and stood up, Captain Sutherland patting my back.

"Calum." He stopped me as I stepped to the door. "I remember when you would bring Meredith to the events for the department...and she never looked at you the way Nessa does. She's a keeper. I hope you can fix this."

"Thank you." I gave him a small smile before leaving the station.

Michael drove us back to the hospital where I immediately went up to her room where Kate was standing at her bedside.

"She looks so sad." Kate frowned.

I stepped up and placed a hand on Nessa's shoulder, the girl not waking up.

"What is she going to do? She lives by herself. She won't have anyone to help her."

"She could hire a home nurse." Michael suggested.

"I'll do it." I said and they both looked up at me.

"What?" Kate asked.

"I'll take care of her. I can have my parents watch Eli and Cade, i'll take some time off work, Captain Sutherland will understand, and i'll help her."

"Calum are you sure?" She whispered. "Won't that make it harder for you to move on?"

"I care about her, okay? We may have broken up but that doesn't mean she's not important to me. I want to be the one to take care of her."

"I think it's a good idea." Michael piped up. "And i'll help you out as much as you need."

"We all will." Kate added and I gave them a brief smile before calling my parents to see if they could get Eli and Cade for me.

They accepted and understood and were more than happy to help, and while she was still asleep I left to go see the kids and pack up my own stuff before heading back to the hospital to sit at her bedside until they decided to release her.

Nessa's PoV:

My body felt heavy.

I was cold. Never had I felt this cold before.

Then I heard beeping.

I could feel myself becoming aware.

I heard the beeping, and there were voices but they were far away. I then heard what sounded like a door closing and footsteps, and in confusion I opened my eyes.

It was dark, but I could tell I was in a hospital.

"Nessa?" I then heard a mans voice and a blurry face was then looking at mine. My eyes focused as I could see Calum above me.

"Calum." I said. My voice was weak and I saw him barely smile.

"I'll go get your doctor." He then said and then he was gone.

I closed my eyes again and let myself go back to sleep where I didn't feel anything.

The next time I awoke I was in my bedroom.

My throat was dry and I needed water.

I sat up, throwing the blanket off of me before swinging my right leg off the bed. I then went to move my left but when I did the pain was so much that I couldn't, but ended up falling off the bed.

My body crashed to the floor and I cried out from the pain. I hurt everywhere.

But I was so thirsty.

I grabbed onto the bed and pulled myself up, holding onto the bed as I jumped to the left on only my right leg.

I knew I had been in a hospital, but they let me go home alone like this?

I dragged myself to the end of the bed. There was space between the bed and the wall, about five feet, and I needed to hold on to that wall so I could hold myself up.

I took a deep breath before hopping on one leg over to the wall, falling into it when I reached it.

I then began to drag myself along the wall and into the hallway. I did this, the tears rolling down my cheeks, until I reached the kitchen.

I had to hop to the other side so I could get to the cabinets where the cups were so I could get one.

I managed to open the cabinet but when I reached up for a cup my legs collapsed underneath me and I fell to the floor.

As I laid on the kitchen floor I cried.

I needed help.

I would call someone, Kate, if I had my phone. But I didn't know where it was.

Everything hurt. It hurt so bad.

I thought the pain was making me imagine things, and I heard the sound of the front door open.

I looked anyways and saw Calum walking through my front door, brown paper sacks in his hands.

"Oh my God, Nessa!"

Calum set the bags on the table before running over to me.

"What are you doing?! You have a broken leg!" He exclaimed as he got down on his knees.

"I was thirsty." I said and he huffed before getting his arms under me and lifting me up.

"You could've waited till I got back." He said as he carried me back to my bedroom.

"I didn't know you were even here." I cried.

He didn't say anything as he walked back to my bedroom and set me down on the bed.

He reached to the other side and grabbed a pillow before gently lifting my left leg and placing the pillow underneath. He put my leg back down and then covered me up with a blanket.

"I'll be back in a second." He said and then left my room.

I took this opportunity to look around.

I was in some sleep shorts and a tee shirt but I could feel I had no bra on underneath.

I lifted the blanket and looked at my leg to see it was covered in blue and purple bruises.

I set the blanket back down and then felt my hair. It was a bit greasy from not being washed so I tied it up with a hair tie, feeling a bandage on my forehead.

Calum then walked in with a cup in one hand and handed it to me.

I gulped down the water, quenching my thirst and emptied the glass in no time.

"Do you want more?" He asked and I nodded.

He took the glass and then left, coming back a minute later with another one.

"Are you in pain?" He asked.

"Yeah."

"Okay, let me figure out your medicine." He said and left before coming back with a brown paper bag.

He set it on my bed and then began to pull different orange and white medicine bottles out of it.

"Okay, lets see," He said to himself as he began to read the labels. "Oh wow they gave you the good stuff." He said as he read a bottle and then set it to the side.

"Alright, I can give you tylenol." He then began to open a bottle.

"Wait, I want the good stuff." I said and he shook his head.

"You can take the good stuff every six hours and I can't give it to you for three more hours."

I whined at this and he handed me the two tylenol pills so I could swallow them.

I watched as Calum began to put the bottles back in the bag.

He was in jeans and a tee shirt, and looked a bit tired.

"Calum?"

When I said his name he just hummed back as a response.

"What are you doing here?"

"Taking care of you." He said.

"Why?"

"Because if you couldn't tell already, you're obviously not in a place where you can take care of yourself."

"I know, but why you...? I mean, couldn't Kate help me?"

"She could, but I'm doing it."

"But you have work."

"I took a few days off." He said in a brash tone. "I'm going to go put the groceries up."

Calum then left room with the medicine.

I looked at my nightstand where my purse was resting and reached for it, digging until I found my phone.

I had several missed calls.

Three from my dad, eight from Dawson, and one from Jess.

I found my texts with Kate and sent her a message.

'Why is Calum here?'

A few seconds later she responded.

'You're awake! Yay! And he wanted to.'

'We broke up, this feels weird.'

'Just because you broke up doesn't mean he's not still into you.' She texted back. 'How do you feel?'

'In pain.'

'Lol.'

I set my phone down and sighed.

The most annoying part of this was I didn't even know how I had broken my leg.

I waited for Calum to come back and after five minutes he did.

"I'm going to make something for dinner and then have Michael come make sure you didn't hurt yourself further when you pulled your little stunt earlier. Are you hungry?"

"Not really." I shook my head.

"Okay. Yell if you need me." He began to walk away.

"Wait, Calum." I said and he stopped and turned back around. "How did I break my leg?"

"You were in a car accident. Guy was texting and hit you and you swerved into another car and when you hit them it basically crushed your leg."

"Did you see it, the accident?"

"Yeah." He said and I nodded. "Do you need anything else?"

"No." I shook my head and then watched as he left.

I could hear him banging around in the kitchen and sighed again before turning on the television.

I put it on some reality show and then began to watch.

Thirty minutes later Calum came back in with a small bowl and another glass of water.

"I read your medicine instructions and you have to eat something before you take the good pain meds."

He set a bowl of macaroni and cheese on the nightstand.

"And Michael will be here in a few."

"I need to change clothes." I said.

"You're fine."

"Can you at least get me a bra?"

"Where are they?"

"Top drawer."

He walked over and opened it.

"Which one do you want."

"The black sports bra."

He found it and then tossed it to me.

"Turn around so I can put it on." I said and he rolled his eyes as he turned around.

I watched him as I took off my tee shirt and put on the bra before putting my tee shirt back on.

"Okay, you're good." I said and he turned around.

Calum then sat on the end of the bed.

"So where are Eli and Cade?" I asked.

"My parents are watching them."

"How long are you going to be taking care of me?"

"However long I need to." He replied.

I nodded at his answer.

"Eat." He looked at the bowl and I took it before taking a bite.

Calum sat there and watched me for a moment before turning to look at the television.

"I don't understand how you watch this stuff." He said after a few minutes.

"It's entertaining."

"It's senseless."

"Then don't watch it." I said and he shook his head.

I set my half eaten bowl down on the night stand and he stood up to get it, walking to the kitchen.

From all of the water I drank I needed to go to the bathroom so I flipped back the blankets and carefully scooted to the side so I could get off the bed but instead slipped and fell to the floor. I tried to catch myself but heard and felt my wrist snap beneath me.

"OW! DAMMIT!"

Then there was the pounding of footsteps as Calum came running back in.

"What the hell are you doing?!" He yelled.

"I was trying to get to the bathroom." I whimpered.

"Then you should've called for me!"

"I don't need your help!"

"Yes you do! You can't even stand up without falling down! So get over whatever it is that bothers you about me being here and let me help you!" He yelled at me and my head dropped as I began to cry.

"It hurts." I sobbed. "I think I broke my wrist."

Calum sighed and then picked me up again.

"Do you want to go to the bathroom or the bed?"

"Bathroom."

He carried me to the bathroom and closed the toilet seat with his foot and then set me down.

"Keep your leg straight, and yell for me if you need help. I'll be right outside." He said and then left and closed the door.

I reached with my good arm and grabbed onto the counter so I could pull myself up and open the toilet lid before managing to get my shorts down so I could relieve myself.

After that I pulled myself back up so I could wash my hands and redress.

"Okay, i'm done." I said and the door opened, Calum coming in and picking me up to carry me back to the bed.

"I'll get some ice for your wrist." He said after he got me situated and left, coming back with a towel filled with ice.

I winced as he held it to my wrist.

"You okay?" He asked me since I was still crying.

"This is so embarrassing."

"Why are you embarrassed?" He said in a much softer voice.

"Because I don't want anyone to see me like this."

"You're injured, Ness. It wasn't your fault. I'm not judging you at all, I care about you and I'm here to help you as much as you need."

"Thank you." I looked up at him and he reached over to wipe off my cheeks.

"Knock knock."

Calum and I looked to see Michael standing at my bedroom door.

"Hey." Calum said.

"You know, it's her leg that's broken, not her wrist."

"Well it might be that too. She fell and hurt it."

"Were you trying to escape from Calum?" Michael joked as he walked up and looked at my wrist.

"No." I said and he smiled before carefully lifting up my arm.

"Tell me where it hurts." He said as he began to feel around and I jumped when he reached the spot that hurt the worst.

"Yeah, you probably broke it." He said and I whined. "Now let's look at your leg."

Michael began to look at my leg and I noticed Calum standing off to the side watching.

"Your leg seems fine, I don't think you hurt it any further. But stay off it. You don't need to be walking until the doctor tells you it's okay. So for now, suck it up and let Calum help you until I can get you a brace and some crutches."

"Okay." I said. "Thank you."

"No problem. I should have them soon."

"I'll walk you out." Calum said, the two of them leaving.

Calum was gone for a few minutes before coming back.

"Do you mind if I sleep in the other room?"

"No that's fine." I said.

"Okay." He said. "Do you need anything?"

"Can I have more tylenol?"

"No, but you can take the other pain meds in two hours."

"Calum it really hurts."

"I know it does but if I give you more medicine it's going to make you sick."

"Can't you give me something?"

"Not yet. I'm sorry. I know you're in pain and i'd give you the medicine if I could but I can't. So try and get some sleep and i'll wake you up to give you your medicine."

I nodded at this and he covered me up with the blanket before leaving.

Closing my eyes I tried to do what he said but I couldn't sleep for a while. I heard him come check on me several times and I guess somewhere in those two hours I fell asleep because soon I was being brought back to consciousness by a hand shaking my shoulder.

"Nessa, wake up." Calum said and I opened my eyes to see him standing next to me. "It's time for the good medicine."

He helped me sit up and then handed me the pills and some water.

As I took them I saw him set an alarm on his phone for 3:00 A.M.

"This stuff will knock you out so I don't think you will, but if you do wake up, call for me. I'll come back and give you your medicine when it's time. Do you need anything?"

"I'm okay." I said.

"Okay, then. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Calum turned off my lamp and then left my room, leaving the door open.

I had always slept with my door closed ever since I was a little girl, and I wouldn't be able to sleep with it open.

But the medicine had other ideas and I was out before I could even finish my thought.

--

Just a broken leg but it's not over yet.

Will Calum taking care of Nessa be good for them or bad, and what affect will the accident have on Nessa going forward?

More to come!

Much love xx-m
