Chapter 17

Crazy.

That's the only way I was able to describe my next day.

The station was filled with new officers and I was in charge of getting them settled and making sure they had everything they needed.

I would pass by Calum occasionally but he only
nodded in acknowledgement at me.

I wasn't able to go in to the corner store because I was too busy at the station setting up the welcome luncheon in the meeting room and fighting off Luke from stealing cookies.

"So how's Calum?" I asked Luke as he leaned against a counter.

"I don't know honestly, he's not talking much to me either."

"Do you think he is second guessing things?"

"If I knew I would tell you." Luke sighed.

Calum texted me later that day to say his parents had the boys this week and so I didn't need to babysit, and so like I had the rest of the week, I went home alone.

Sunday was my day off and I was able to relax and catch up on sleep, and then Monday I was back at work.

I was supposed to take my car to the mechanic today to get my tire looked at, and so when Calum walked in for lunch I kissed him on the cheek and then pulled him aside.

"Hey, so I have to go to the mechanic today, but I was wondering if after you maybe wanted to grab dinner?"

I tucked my hair behind my ear and placed one hand on his arm as I spoke, trying to make myself seem more adorable to entice him.

"I have a lot to do at the station but we'll see."

I didn't even try to hide my annoyance and walked away from him.

Kate glanced awkwardly between us the entire time and Calum told me goodbye before he left.

"He's so aggravating." I groaned, complaining to Kate.

"If he's still like this tomorrow i'm going to knock some sense into his head." She shook her fist in the air.

I laughed and then hugged her before going out to my car so I could drive to the mechanic.

It was a ways away, an hour away in fact, and I didn't know where I was going, so I was using printed out directions and began my trek to the mechanic.

I was driving along a farm to market road in what seemed the middle of nowhere when suddenly I heard a loud popping noise.

I screamed out of surprise and swerved my car, feeling my back tire bump around and I looked in my rear view mirror to see it was gone.

Immediately I pulled over.

I jumped out of my car and looked to see that my back tire had exploded, and I didn't know how to change a tire. And besides, my rim was bent so bad it probably wouldn't work.

I whined and then went to grab my phone.

I sat in my car and dialed Calum's number.

"Yeah." He answered.

"Hey my car broke down, I need you to come get me."

"Okay; i'll leave when I can. Probably like thirty minutes. Bye."

"Wait Ca-" I tried to say but he had already hung up.

He didn't even know where I was.

I called again and he answered.

"What?"

"Calum you don't even know where I am!"

"I'll find you! Nessa i'm really busy right now i've got to go!"

I gasped as he hung up on me.

I tried calling him again but it went straight to voicemail.

I then went to call Kate, but my phone made a beeping noise and I looked to see it said battery low.

"No, no no no this can't be happening." I whined as the burner phone completely powered down.

I screamed in frustration and threw my phone into the seat next to me.

Now I was stranded on the side of the road in the middle of no where with a dead phone.

I couldn't even call a tow truck or anyone to help me.

I screamed in frustration again and hit the steering wheel.

I could wait for someone to stop and help me, but with my luck it would be some creep instead of a good samaritan.

So instead I sat there and listened to the radio, waiting for someone to stop by.

Another thirty minutes passed by before I heard a sputtering noise and my eyes went wide as I sat up noticing that I was now out of gas.

"You've got to be kidding me!" I cried out as my car completely died.

I honestly could not believe this was happening.

My life was a mess.

I was in hiding from my brothers gang, my boyfriend who didn't know my true identity wasn't speaking to me because his dead wife's parents hated my guts, and now my car was broke down on the side of the road in the middle of no where during summer in Georgia.

I wanted to cry.

And so I did.

This was just all to much.

I just wanted everything to go back to normal with Calum and for him to be happy and be happy with me again but he was so strung out over what Meredith's parents had said, he didn't even want to be around me.

I hadn't seen Eli and Cade in days and I missed them so much.

I missed what life used to be.

This was the lowest I had ever felt in life.

It was getting dark, I had no idea what time it was, I was starving, thirsty, and exhausted.

Fewer cars went by as the hours passed, and soon I just climbed into the back seat and laid down, praying to God a tow truck or cop would drive by and see me.

A loud pounding noise woke me up and I shot up to see someone standing outside my car, looking in through the back window.

And that person just so happened to be Ashton.

"Nessa?"

I flung open the car door before flinging myself into his arms.

"Oh my God, Ashton. Thank God."

"Are you okay? What are you doing out here?" He asked me.

"I was going to the mechanic and my tire blew out and I couldn't fix it and I tried to call Calum but that didn't work and then I ran out of gas and-"

"Wait you've been here all night?"

"Yes." I whimpered. "My phone died, I don't even know what time it is."

"It's 7:00. Look, I was on my way to my parents but i'll help you. I'll call a tow truck if you want to get your stuff from the car." He suggested.

"Yes. Thank you." I smiled and he pulled out his phone while I grabbed my purse from the car.

"Okay, I gave them your address. Let's go." Ashton said and led me to his truck that was parked behind my car.

"So you called Calum?" He asked as he began to drive back towards town.

"Yes and he blew me off. And then I called and it went to voicemail."

Ashton shook his head and I heard him mutter "jack ass" under his breath.

He found a fast food restaurant and pulled in so I could use the restroom and he bought me breakfast that I ate in his car.

"Can you take me to the police station instead of my house? I have something to do."

"Is what you're going to do what I think you're going to do?" He asked.

"Probably." I said and then sighed. "I mean I called him for help and he blew me off and left me stranded in the side of the road over night. What kind of boyfriend does that?! I know he's hurting right now but this is the last straw, I can't do this anymore."

"I'm sorry." Ashton frowned.

"It's not your fault." I said quietly.

When we got to the police station I got out of the car before storming inside, barging into his office where Calum was sitting at his desk.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" I shouted at him and both he and Luke turned around in surprise.

"What are you-"

"No! I called you yesterday after my car broke down and you said you'd come get me without even asking where I was! And when I called your phone went to voicemail! I had no gas, no phone, and a broken tire and you were supposed to get me! You left me stranded on the side of the road over night!"

"Nessa I-" He said in surprise.

"No, just shut up! I'm so done with you Calum! I'm tired of you ignoring me and pushing me away! I'm just done!"

"What is that supposed to mean?" He asked me in a voice much louder than I expected him to have, but I guess he had to shout to get my attention.

"It means we're done Calum. This is over."

"Nessa, stop-"

"No!" I shouted again and stamped my foot. "Don't ever talk to me again!"

At this I turned and stomped away from his office, practically running into Ashton who was behind me.

Out the building I went and went back to Ashton's truck.

He came out a minute later and got in the truck, looking at me as I sat there with my arms crossed and my face stern.

"Do you want me to take you home?" He asked.

"Yes, please."

He drove away from the station and to my house, keeping silent the whole time as I seethed in the passenger seat.

"Nessa, i'm so sorry. Really." Ashton said once we reached a stop sign.

"It's whatever. I knew this was coming, I just thought he was going to be the one to break up with me."

"Well he'd be an idiot to break up with you."

I tried to give him a smile but it faltered.

When Ashton pulled up to my house my car wasn't there yet, and he watched me as I awkwardly walked inside and closed the door, pulling out my phone to text Kate.

'Not coming in today. Broke up with Calum.'

'WHAT?! WHAT HAPPENED?!' She responded immediately.

'He left me stranded on the side of the road overnight. Ashton found me and picked me up this morning. Just left the station and told Calum we were done.'

'Omg, Ness I'm so sorry!'

I set my phone down and then let out a whine of frustration.

I couldn't believe the last 24 hours had actually happened.

But they had.

And I had broken up with Calum...

--

...and there we go

So, basically...yeah. Do you think Nessa did the right thing or did she overreact?

And how do you think Calum is going to handle all of this?

More to come (because I couldn't leave the story like this duh haha)

Much love xx-m
