Chapter 1
"Abby you have to go!"
Jess's voice was firm, insistent, yet petrified.
She knew how bad of a situation I was in, and we would both be dead if they caught me here.
"How many are there?" I asked as she had her ear pressed to the wood of her apartment door.
"Two in the hall."
I nodded.
Shoving the magazine of bullets into the base of the grip of my small, black, semi-automatic, I cocked the gun and took off the safety, ready to fire if I needed to.
"Abby you don't have much time to get to Dawson before they find you." Jess warned from the door.
Her natural red hair was illuminated by the lamp light and her freckled face and green eyes looked worried, more so than usual.
Slinging a back pack over my shoulders, I put up the hood of my black hoodie before rushing over to hug Jessica. She had been my my only true friend (that was a girl) for the past 14 years of my life.
"Let me know when you're safe."
"I will I promise." I whispered before I heard a thump down the hall and let her go to dash to the window.
I opened it and slipped onto the fire escape before Jess came by and closed it behind me, locking it and closing the curtain, moving a vase of flowers in front of it to make it look like it had never been opened.
The New York City streets were noisy which helped me as I scaled my way down the buildings fire escapes until I reached the second floor and had to drop down.
Once I hit the pavement I glanced at my dark surroundings before darting into an alleyway on the side of Jess's apartment building.
This building, hell this whole neighbourhood belonged to The Black Wolves, and I needed to get out now.
The Black Wolves were the biggest gang in New York, if not the biggest gang in the country. They were violent, intimidating, ruthless, and not afraid of anything, and I was in the centre of their home.
These people were the last people you ever wanted to come into contact with.
You would think to call the police of you saw one but to your luck the police officer who would show up would be a Black Wolf and probably kill you for being a snitch, a mistake I had seen happen far too often in my almost fifteen years of knowing about The Black Wolves.
Suddenly I heard a noise that sounded like something hitting metal and I ducked behind a dumpster, my heart hammering in my chest and my blood pumping wildly through my veins.
Another noise was heard until a movement out of the corner of my eye caused me to turn and aim my gun at whoever was there, but I heaved a sigh of relief when I saw it was just a pigeon.
"Damn bird." I muttered. I had almost wasted one of my rounds on that dirty ball of feathers.
"There she is!" I suddenly heard a man shout and I looked to my left to see two members of The Black Wolves running towards me.
Immediately I was up and running for my damn life. I skidded out of the alley and onto another pedestrian filled street.
I pushed my way through the already temperamental New Yorkers and down the sidewalk one block before skidding into another alley.
I had to lose their trail, I had to get to Dawson, my only other friend.
When I got to the next alley I crouched down behind another dumpster and yanked the burner phone out of my hoodie pocket that I had stashed my gun in before I ran out into the streets and got myself on national television.
I hit speed dial seven and heard it dial before it rang once and I hung up. I dialled again and this time someone answered.
It was their signal to know it was me.
"On my way." I spoke clearly into the phone, still breathing hard before I hung up and checked behind me before getting up to run.
"Not so fast Whitfield!" I heard behind me and turned to see the two Black Wolves who had been chasing me now at the opposite end of the alleyway, guns drawn and pointed at me. "Just give it up."
"Go to hell." I spat at them.
"We know what you saw, and we know what you did. You know Seth won't let you get away with this." One of the guys who I knew as Carlos Sanchez called at me. The mention of my brothers name had me reeling.
His tanned skin looked darker underneath the street lights and a trace of his Hispanic accent came through. Like me, he was all in black. I couldn't see much of his face in the dim light except for his giant nose that always bothered me for some reason.
"Seth can go to hell with you." I growled.
"Look, just turn yourself in, that way we don't have to kill you." Carlos's pal said and I looked to see it was his friend Jake Hale.
Jake had red hair and green eyes like my best friend Jessica, and that was probably because he was her brother. That was how we met, because both of our brothers were in The Black Wolves.
"No." I bit back.
"Don't make this hard Abby." Carlos called at me again.
"Too late." I said, a course of anger and courage rushing through me.
I yanked my gun from my pocket before aiming and firing.
I didn't even know if I had hit one of them with my bullet and I didn't turn back to find out. I bolted out of that alley faster then I could blink.
I heard the sounds of screams on the street from the people who had heard the gunfire and I heard three shots that were directed towards me, but I turned the corner and ran across the sidewalk and right into the Friday night 10:00 New York City traffic.
I needed a cab.
Shoving the gun back in my pocket I began to look for an empty cab and found one.
I ran to it and yanked the door open, and jumped inside.
"50th street and 8 ave." I told the driver who gave me a wide eyed look due to my frazzled state.
I yanked off my hood and reached in the pocket of my skinny jeans to pull out a badge.
"FBI." I slammed the picture I.D. against the window between us and he nervously nodded his head before driving.
I loved this little fake I.D.
Dawson had made it for me as a Christmas gift to use in case anything ever happened; I never thought I would need but here I was.
I sighed in relief and leaned back against the seat as I tried to catch my breath.
Catching a glance of myself in the mirror I barely recognised myself.
My once long blonde hair that went to my waist had been dyed a boring brown and had been cut to just above my breasts.
My once blue eyes that everyone had always fawned over were now covered by green contacts, distorting the real colour.
I glanced back and watched the price of my cab ride increase as the anxious driver weaved quickly through the streets.
Once I saw my destination in sight I snatched a twenty from my wallet and got really to bolt from the car.
The moment the driver stopped I threw him the twenty and booked it out of the vehicle.
He peeled away from the curb, probably trying to get away from me as quickly as possible.
I didn't care.
My feet carried me down the stairs of the subway station and I walked briskly down the crowded way until I came across a grey door in the wall that said maintenance only and barged in.
"There you are!" I was then enveloped by the bony arms of the scrawny teenager in front of me.
"I don't have a lot of time Dawson." I released myself from his bear hug.
"Okay. I have your stuff. Your new I.D., drivers license, birth certificate, social security card, new credit cards and insurance cards all under your new name." Dawson, with his neatly maintained black hair and thick framed glasses, showed me the documents on his desk inside the closet.
"Thanks so much." I began to put them in my back pack.
"I have a new subway card for you and you can use this wallet."
I began to put the new cards inside when I saw one that made me raise my eyebrows.
"New York Public Library card?"
"That's mine." He took it back and I finished putting everything in my wallet.
"Okay, you'll take the A train down to 42nd street and then catch the 10:27 Greyhound bus to Raleigh North Carolina. Once there you can get a bus to anywhere."
"Got it." I nodded and began to leave.
"Oh and Abby?" Dawson's voice stopped me and I turned around. "Call me when you've found where you're going."
"I will. Thanks Dawson. Stay safe."
He saluted me, an inside joke, and I saluted him back before leaving.
I found a subway car that was full and got on it once the subway arrived and anxiously tapped my foot against the floor until it stopped at 42nd street and I was off.
I walked quickly up the stairs, always scanning my surroundings before finding my way to the bus station.
Ducking inside I found my bus and immediately got on, not wasting any time.
Dawson had already purchased the ticket so no camera at the window would see me paying or see me sitting in the waiting area.
I found a seat in the middle of the bus, a window seat, and pulled my hood down from my head.
Moving my backpack into my lap I carefully moved my gun into my backpack, putting the safety on, and then retrieved my burner phone, pressing speed dial one.
It rang several times until there was a beep, I had gotten voicemail. I didn't expect anything other than that.
"Daddy it's me." I spoke quietly. "I'm okay, I'm safe. But I'm going to lay low for awhile. Call me whenever you get this."
I set my phone down in my lap and watched as a few other people got on the bus. I watched everyone carefully, making sure none of the men that got on the bus were Black Wolves. The clear way to tell would be the W tattoo on their wrist, which none of them had.
When the time reached 10:35 the bus began to drive away from the terminal and I completely relaxed.
The bus drove through the city streets and I leaned back, wishing that I wouldn't have walked in that damn apartment building a two days ago.
It had been a late night of napping on my sofa when I got a call from Jess to meet her at her apartment so we could go out to dinner.
I went to meet her and was walking along the sidewalks in her burrow when I heard the sound of a scream from a building as I passed.
I knew I shouldn't go inside, I knew I should just keep walking, but I went inside anyways.
It was probably some girl that a few Black Wolves were picking on and I could tell them to let her go.
I walked up the stairs, following the sounds of angry voices until I reached the third floor of the building.
Only one door in the hall was open and I walked over, peeking around the corner.
From where I stood I could see plenty of Black Wolves members.
I could see piles of cash on tables, guns on tables and in hands of the men surrounding the other man that was tied with rope to a chair.
As I was trying to see what was happening I felt something press against my back, it was immediately recognised as a gun.
"You'll forget what you saw here." A stone cold voice said behind me and then turned me around.
I came face to face with Spencer Warner, one of the higher ups in The Black Wolves. He was also my brother Seth's' closest confidant.
My brother was one of the leaders of The Black Wolves, that's why I was as involved as I was. I didn't have much of a choice.
"Let me go Spencer." I growled.
"I'll have to tell Seth about this."
"I didn't see anything."
"Oh I think you did."
"Let go of me." I said as his hand tightened on my shoulder. I was scared. Spencer wasn't a person to be around. Ever.
"No, since you're here why don't you come inside. I'm sure your brother would love to see you." He wickedly smirked at me and that's when I knew I was in danger.
"Spencer get your hand off of me." I bit at him and when he didn't release me I snapped.
He pushed me back towards the open door and I fell backwards into the floor. My hand reached into the front of my jeans where I had tucked a gun in the waist band of my jeans under my shirt.
I yanked it out, took off the safety and aimed it Spencer.
"Don't come any closer." I warned him.
"Put the gun down Abby." He stepped forward.
"I'll shoot you."
"I said put it down." He looked so angry as he moved forward again.
"Don't come closer!"
I shouted at him but he moved forward only to kick the gun out of my hands.
I cried out as he did and went to scramble for the gun as Spencer dove on top of me to get it.
He started to drag me back by my legs and my gun was getting farther out of reach.
I knew if Seth found out I had seen something I wasn't supposed to he would be livid. I couldn't let it happen.
I kicked my feet and landed one to Spencer's jaw.
He moved back and I used the opportunity to reach for my gun.
Everything moved so fast as I turned the gun towards Spencer and fired.
Spencer fell backward as the bullet hit him square in the chest.
I heard the shouts from The Black Wolves inside the apartment and knew I had only seconds to run for my life.
So that's what I did.
I had run to Jess's apartment after that in a panic and she tried to calm me down, but I knew I'd be found out and I had to get out of here.
I had possibly killed a Black Wolves member, and that was a death sentence.
After that I had contacted my best friend Dawson to help me get out of town.
I hid in Jess's apartment for two days until I couldn't any longer, and I had to leave.
I found out I had killed Spencer. Jake Hale, Jess's brother told her that she had to attend the funeral, and that they were searching for his killer. Then they found out it was me.
My phone vibrated in my lap and I jumped.
It rang once and then stopped, before ringing again.
I answered.
"Abby?" My fathers voice came clear across the line.
"Yes." I breathed.
"I don't have a lot of time, Seth is coming over, but I had to call you. What happened?"
"I killed Spencer Warner." I whispered.
"Oh Abby."
"He was going to hurt me, it was self defence. But Seth knows, they all know, I had to leave."
"Where are you going?"
"I'm on a bus, I don't know yet, but I'll tell you when I find out."
"Okay. I'm destroying this phone after we hang up, you should do the same, we'll use another one."
"Okay. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay Abby. I'll talk to you soon."
We hung up the phone and I took out the SIM card. I used the butt of the gun to crush it in my hand.
I brushed the shards on the floor and then put my things away, closing my eyes and trying to get some sleep.
I would wake up in a different city, and I would be safe.
I would no longer be blonde haired, blue eyed Abby Whitfield; I would be brown haired, green eyed Nessa Rothchester.
No longer could I be who I once was, that girl was gone, just like everything else.
