The Great Kit Genocide

"What's going on out there?" Wolfkit squeaked, bounding up the nursery tunnel to see what the noise was in camp. "Can I go see?"

They had all been woken up by voices and thudding paws, but it was only just moonhigh, so it wasn't their clan mates returning from the gathering. Who could it be?

"No!" Flowerstream gasped, lunging for her kit. "Come back here!" She picked up the little tom, and he let out loud yowl of complaint. His yowl echoed up the tunnel, surely making its way out into the main clearing.

The grey she cat's eyes widened in fear. Oh no... They would've definitely heard that. "Quickly! Hide!" She whispered, gathering the many kits into her nest, trying to cover them with moss. I won't let any of these kits die! I will protect them all with my life!

She had heard strange cats enter camp a while ago. She had stayed quiet and was positive they had left them alone, but Wolfkit's yowl would've alerted them to their presence. All they could do now was hide and pray they were spared from whoever these attackers were.

"Stay in the nest!" The grey furred queen hissed, stalking up the tunnel to see what was going on outside the den.

Tinykit whimpered from the nest, poking her head out from the moss. "Where's Mumma going?"

"I'm gonna go see!" Blackkit replied, climbing out of the nest with a grunt of effort, stumbling after the queen.

Flowerstream blocked the way. "No, go back to the nest Blackkit. I'm serious." Her voice was hushed, her face stricken with terror. "Hide under the moss. Don't let anyone find you." She pushed Blackkit back towards the nest where he tumbled back in with his den mates.

"But where are you going?" Smokekit asked with round, curious eyes. "Why can't we come with you?"

"It's dangerous." Flowerstream replied, tensing when she heard a voice just outside the cave entrance. "Go now, hide!" She hissed, spinning around just as she caught sight of two pairs of glowing eyes making their way down the tunnel. She felt her heart skip a beat; these definitely weren't her clan mates. They were doomed.

The two cats came fully into view, sly grins twisting onto their blood-stained lips as they caught sight of Flowerstream. She watched as the toms glanced behind her in unison, their grins widening when they saw the kits huddling in the nest behind Flowerstream.

"So many kits." One of the toms rumbled, sinking his bloodied claws into the soft mossy ground of the nursery cave. "The little she kit's mine." He smirked at Tinykit, causing the kit to squeal in fear and cling to her littermates with a small beg for protection against the two toms.

"Who are you?" Flowerstream demanded, baring her teeth as she made sure to keep her body in the way of the toms and the kits.

"Our names are unimportant." The grey tom replied, swiping his tongue over his lips as he eyed the kits hungrily. "But if you haven't already guessed it, we're part of NoName's attack."

"NoName's attack." Flowerstream echoed, her heart crashing to the bottom of her stomach, her fur bristling along her back. "You're here at last.."

"Yes, and what a perfect time too. There're no warriors about to save you and your little kits." The other tom, a brown tortoiseshell drew closer to Flowerstream with a wide smirk.

Flowerstream stood her ground, baring her teeth fiercely at him. "Don't take another step closer." She warned, her voice tipped with venom. "Or you will regret it."

"Oh will I?" The tortoishell laughed, lifting up from his crouch so that he stood taller than the queen. "Wanna bet?"

Flowerstream swallowed thickly before hissing in reply. "This is your last warning."

Unaware of his approach, the grey tom was suddenly ontop of Flowerstream before she could even utter a word of surprise, forcing her down onto the ground. His forepaws rested heavily on the back of her head, pushing her muzzle into the mossy floor. "Well that was easy." He commented, scoffing down at her. "You're even weaker than I thought."

Flowerstream growled and wriggled around beneath the heavy grey tom, somehow managing to twist her body around to kick him, dislodging his paws from her head. Once her head was free, she rolled fully onto her back and shoved him onto the ground with all her paws. She used the momentum to stand up in a flash, standing atop the grey tom.

The tortoiseshell chuckled with something close to amusement on his face as he watched the tussle unfold. "Well done, queen. You're not as useless as a fish."

Once he finished speaking, his companion surged upwards with amazing strength, throwing Flowerstream off her paws again. She landed with a thud near the cave wall, gasping as the breath was knocked from her lungs.

The tortoiseshell strode calmly towards her, bending down so that his breath warmed her face. "Are you done with your empty threats now?" He grinned down at her.

Flowerstream spluttered- still short for breath. "Don't touch the kits you sick murderers!" She struggled to lift herself up, but the tom held her down with a single paw on her back, his claws pricking her skin painfully.

"Hush now, the show is starting." The Dark Forest tom turned his piercing yellow gaze to the other tom, grinning as he peered into the nest of squealing kits.

"Who's first?" The grey tom smirked down at the kits, drawing his claws gently over the writhing bundles. Emberkit attempted to escape from the nest, but he snatched her up before she could leave. "I'll guess you'll have to do.."

"No! Stop it!" Flowerstream tried again to rise, but a hefty blow to her head left her dazed and unable to move, waves of dizziness setting in as she watched helplessly.

The tortoiseshell sat calmly by Flowerstream, smirking as the grey warrior began cutting into Emberkit's soft belly, drawing blood. The little kit shrieked and cried, flailed her paws. "It hurts!" She wailed. "It hurts!"

"If you stay quiet, I'll give you a quicker death." The grey tom smiled down at Emberkit before turning to the other kits. "Same goes for all of you."

Flowerstream whimpered, her heart shattering as she watched the little kit writh in pain until finally the grey tom finished her off. She turned to see the other kits staring in shocked silence, their eyes wide with terror. She let out a hoarse cry. "Run! Don't let them get you!" Her outcry left her with a bleeding side, but it was worth it. The kits snapped out of their trance and immediately started diving for the tunnel exit. They stumbled over Emberkit's limp body, barely acknowledging their fallen den mate as they sprinted away. They were going to escape! Hope lifted in Flowerstream's chest, filling her with a warmth as she watched Tinykit- the kit at the back of the group- make it to the tunnel.

"You're mouse-brained." The tortoiseshell laughed, still sitting calmly beside her. "You really think they'll make it through camp with all of the Dark Forest cats up there?"

His words took some moments to settle in, but once they did, Flowerstream felt all her hope disappear just as the first of the kits' pained wails were heard.
