"It's okay..." Sagestar's voice whispered above his head, calm and soothing. Her black tipped tail rested on his back, twitching slowly against his fur.
"I could've saved him." Zeye muttered, his voice muffled by his paws. "I could've brought him here with you. Why did I leave him there to have his soul taken?" He was curled beside Sagestar's nest in the den he had made for her in the deserted forest outside the clan territories. His face was buried in his white furred paws, his tail lashing against the ground as he grieved for Nutwhisker.
"I'm sure he's fine..." Sagestar murmured, her voice uncertain. She seemed to be struggling to keep calm- after all, Nutwhisker had been her brother.
Zeye felt tears prick his eyes and he murmured. "Just leave me here to sleep for a bit..." He didn't want Sagestar to see him like this.
Sagestar sighed and nodded. "Alright. Have a good rest." She stood up and padded out of the den, her tail flicking behind her.
Zeye sighed and curled into a tight ball, screwing his eyes shut and willing sleep to come to him.
His dreams were empty, but echoed with the terrible screeches from Nutwhisker. The scene of his death played over in Zeye's mind, until he forced himself out of his dream and lifted his head with weary sigh.
Blinking, he noticed a single berry sitting at his paws. He wondered if Sagestar had put it there. Why? He wondered, tilting his head to the side as he sniffed the berry. He narrowed his eyes when a distinctive smell filled his nostrils. These berries are poisonous. Sagestar wouldn't have given this to me. He looked around. Was this another one of Whisper's jokes?
But nobody was around.
Zeye pushed the berry away. Perhaps the wind had blown it into the den. He shrugged off the feeling of nerves balling in his stomach. It was nothing.
Standing up, Zeye spotted another berry by the den entrance. Peering closer, he saw that it was an edible berry, and quickly ate it. He looked up and saw another berry further ahead. Somebody had left him a trail. Zeye followed the trail of berries until he came upon an empty clearing. At the centre of it was a plump rabbit. Zeye muttered. "Either this is a trap or somebody really wants me to eat this rabbit."
Zeye bent down to sniff the rabbit. It seemed okay. He took a bite from it, and smiled as the taste filled his mouth. He hadn't noticed how hungry he was until that moment.
The white tom was halfway through the rabbit when he heard a voice whispering incoherent words into his ear. Something was definitely up.
Sagestar soon appeared and sat beside him. "Oh, you're here." She meowed. "Looks like you caught some food."
"Actually I found it.." Zeye murmured. "Somebody left a trail of berries for me, and this was at the end of it."
Sagestar blinked. "Um.. Ok.. Who did it?"
"I don't know." Zeye shrugged. "I was hoping it was you."
"Nope." She muttered. "Wasn't me."
"But what was surprising was that one of the berries was poisonous." Zeye went on. "Why?"
"They ran out of good berries?" She suggested.
"Maybe. But what if it means something?" He replied.
"Like?"
"A hint to who left this for me."
Sagestar shrugged. "I dunno."
Zeye tensed when he felt something fall on his muzzle. It was a feather. A bright green feather. "Alright, I'm now creeped out." He muttered. "Poisonous berries, a rabbit and now a green feather."
Sagestar shrugged and stood up, letting out a shriek of surprise as water droplets suddenly pelted down on her. "Water?!" She looked up, but there was nothing above her.
"This has got to be some kind of prank." Zeye muttered, sighing.
"At least it's taken your mind of Nutwhisker." Sagestar meowed.
Zeye gave her a look. "Thanks for reminding me."
"Sorry." She replied.

Later that day, Sagestar and Zeye returned to the den. Inside, Zeye saw the nest was untouched. He sighed in relief. "I think that's it." He sat down beside the nest and curled his tail around his paws.
"Wait." He muttered, pricking his ears. "How many things have we gotten now?" Zeye asked.
Sagestar was silent for a few moments, then. "Four."
"I know what this is!" Zeye muttered. "It's so obvious, how did I miss it?" He sighed. "The poison berries- Roundclaw. The rabbit- Whitetail's favourite food. The water- Waterpaw. The green feather.. Skystar?"
Sagestar muttered. "They're trying to contact you while you're not allowed in Starclan."
Zeye felt his heart warm at the thought. "Thank you all." He murmured, hoping they could hear him.
