Chapter 3 - Spoopy and Creppy

"My child, I've been meaning to ask you something..." Toriel explained, looking down at me in worry. "What's up, Toriel?" I asked, looking back.

"Do you know why you thought you were in hell, when we first met...?"

I looked at the snow crunching beneath my feet, thinking. "... I don't really know why, I just had a hunch that I thought I was... dead." I told her. "Like maybe, before I lost my memory,
something happened or I did something that could've killed me...?" I sighed. "I really wanna remember..."

She put a hand on my shoulder. "My child, I am sure your amnesia isn't that bad. I mean, if you thought something when you woke up, then that's a good sign!" She reassured. I looked back at her, smiling softly. "I guess you're right." I admit.

CRACK!

Toriel and I whip our heads to the direction of the noise, spotting a rather large stick that was snapped in half. "...M-Maybe we should hurry..." Toriel insists, holding my hand. I only nod, quickening my pace.

We hear heavy footsteps behind us and start to panic, speeding up into a jog. We stopped in front of a bridge, a fence blocking it off. "Shit...!" I mumble under my breath, Toriel looking at me surprised. We slowly turn our heads and look behind us, spotting a short, shadowy figure approaching. It looked to me.

"H u m a n ." It grumbled, turning it's head to Toriel. "M o n s t e r ." We gulped in unison, Toriel's grip on my hand getting tighter.

Walking towards us, sticking it's hand out. "D o n ' t y o u k n o w h o w t o g r e e t a n e w
p a l ?" Toriel had a confused look on her face, while I had an expression of pure terror.

"C o m e o n , s h a k e m y
h a n d ." It insisted. Toriel looked to me. "Stay here, my child... I will deal with this creep." She whispered to me, letting my hand go and approaching the strange figure. Cautiously, she slowly took hold of his hand.

Pbftft

Toriel snorted, along with the figure I now recognized as a stubby skeleton. Then they were both rolling on the ground, howling with laughter as I just stood where I was, confusion growing even further.

Eventually, they calmed down and got to their feet. "Heh, the old whoopee cushion in the hand trick, it's always funny." The skeleton told us, still chuckling slightly. "Indeed!" Toriel agreed, wiping a tear from laughing so hard.

The skelly's forever-smile grew wider. "The name's Sans; Sans the skeleton." He greeted. "Toriel, and the human behind me is named Opal." She gestured to me, looking at me in concern. "Err... Opal? You alright there?" She asked me softly, head tilted slightly. "I didn't rattle your bones, did I?" Sans grinned at the pun.

I gave a little giggle. I was always a sucker for puns. "Maybe... a little shaken up. But I think I'm getting used to it now." I told them, walking up beside Toriel.

"So, what brings you two here?" Sans questioned, putting his hand in the pocket of his cobalt sweater. "Well, I guess you could say we're on a quest." Toriel insisted. "But Toriel, I thought we were only going on an adventure..." I corrected.

"My child, I was thinking that maybe if we do explore more around the underground, you'd get your memory back in time." Toriel explained. "Woah, hold up. I'm a bit confused here." Sans stopped you two. "What's that about getting someone's memory back?"

"Oh, I apologize Sans. Let me explain; I found Opal in the ruins, and she had looked like she lost her mind-"

"Hey!" You gave a whine of offense. Toriel giggled. "Sorry, she had lost her mind, and I had explained to her where she was and what was going on. Later when I asked her for her name, she couldn't remember. So I suggested making her own name for the time being, and she chose Opal."

"I was very close to choosing Aurora, though." I added. "Well, after that, Toriel brought me to her home and we decided to go venturing ahead of that door." I pointed to the door we came out of. "So, you guys came out of that door? The one I always practice my knock-knock jokes on?" Sans stated.

"That was you?!" Toriel exclaimed. "I knew your voice sounded familiar!" She beamed at him and Sans grinned, like he knew he would get that reaction. "Yup. So you were that PUNNY lady behind that huge door." Sans joked, winking. I giggled. What an adorable personality he has...

Toriel laughed, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Oh my, you've tickled my funny bone, it seems!" She retaliated with another pun. "Okay, now I'm a bit confused..." I mumbled.

"Eh, maybe I'll tell you that story another time." Sans said. "You guys wanna get past that bridge?" He gestured to the bridge with the fence across it. "That would be nice." Toriel uttered. "Well, just walk on by. My brother made the fence too wide to stop anybody." Sans proclaimed.

"Oh, I didn't consider that..." Toriel said, approaching the unstable-looking bridge. "Though, I'd recommend walking by quickly. That way, it doesn't crack any more than it already has." Sans added.

"Wait, crack?!" I exclaimed in fear, staying behind Toriel. "Yup. Didn't you hear me?" He snickered.

"Well, um... What is the slang term kids use these days in situations like this...? Oh yes," Toriel mumbled. "YOLO!!!" She yelled, running across the bridge and through the gap in the fence, giggling all the way.

"WAIT, TORIEL!" I called after her, rushing behind the goat mom. Somehow, Sans was already on the other side, and when I stopped running we were face to face. "Uh..." I blushed out of embarrassment, backing up.

Sans chuckled. "What's wrong? You strict about personal space or somethin'?" He asked. "Oh, no! S-Sorry, I just got a l-little startled." I sputtered. "Heh, it's alright kiddo." He ruffled my hair, walking off to Toriel. I sighed, feeling like an idiot as I followed.

"Yahoo! This is amazing! I haven't been out here in a while!" Toriel exclaimed, running in the snow. I giggled, she seemed pretty excited.

"SAAAAAAAAAAAANS!!!" Someone yelled out. Sans turned to us. "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention about my brother, Papyrus." Sans put out. "He's really cool, and a human hunting fanatic. So you better watch out, kid." Sans pointed at me. "Though I doubt he'd hurt you, probably capture you a few times and set you free. But that's 'bout it." Sans added, shrugging.

"Is that him right now?" Toriel asked, pointing to a spindly skeleton who was currently stomping his way to the trio. "Yup." Sans confirmed. I started to get nervous, looking for a place to hide.

...Too late.

"SANS YOU FORGOT TO RECALIBRATE YOUR PUZZL- WOWIE! IS THAT A HUMAN?!??" He exclaimed, rushing towards me with a hand extended. I looked at him, confused before I took it.

He shook it with enthusiasm, my whole body shaking along with it. "GREETINGS HUMAN! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, LOOK FORWARD TO CAPTURING YOU!!!" He cried, smiling wide. Though, I guessed the smile was a regular thing. 'Cause, y'know, he's a skeleton and all.

*ahem* Moving on.

I smiled back. "I, Opal, look forward to the challenges you have in store for me!" I tried to sound just as lively as him. "THEN LET US GO, OPAL!"

Papyrus held my hand, dragging me to the multiple puzzles he had set up for me. I giggled at his energy, he seemed so zealous. I completed all the puzzles, along with some help from Toriel and Sans.

"WELL, THAT WAS THE LAST ONE! OPAL, YOU ARE GREAT AT PUZZLES!" He declared. "Yup. Totally." Sans agreed. "Why thank you! Let me say, some of those puzzles had me stumped for a moment. You're amazing at making puzzles!" I complimented back. Papyrus gave me a huge hug. "YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THAT MEANS TO ME!!! THANK YOU, OPAL!" He squeezed tighter.

"Alright Paps, let's give the kid some space. You're choking her." Sans tapped his brothers shoulder. "OH? SORRY!" He placed me down, me gasping for air. "It's... no biggie..." I said between breaths.

"HEY, UH... I WAS THINKING..." Papyrus started, shuffling his feet. "MAYBE ALL FOUR OF US CAN HAVE A 'HANG OUT'? I HEARD ABOUT THE CONCEPT FROM UNDYNE AND I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT!" He exclaimed.

Figuring that this 'Undyne' person was a friend of theirs, I decided not to question it. "That would be great! When do we do it?"

"WE COULD DO IT NOW!!" Papyrus insisted. "AT OUR HOUSE!!" He added. "Oh, I know a shortcut. Follow me." Sans told us, going towards the trees. "Sans, are you sure about that?" Toriel called after him, him looking back. "Sure I'm sure, now c'mon." Sans beckoned, walking in between two trees.

We all looked to each other and shrugged, following.

The warm feeling of meeting the skelebros still lingers, filling me with
