Chapter 2 - Leaving the Ruins
(L/L) - (Leg Length)
Please, (Y/- Opal...Wake up!
You are the future for humans and monsters!
I woke up with a start, sitting up in the bed now stained with my sweat. What the hell just happened?
I tossed the covers off of me, hurling my (L/L) legs over the edge of the bed. I sighed as I got up, wanting to jump back into the coziness of the bed.
Walking around the dark room, I bump my forehead into a lamppost and squeal. Rubbing my brow, I turned on the light.
The flash of light blinded me as I squinted, waiting for my eyes to readjust. Looking around the room, I spot a slice of pie on a plate that was placed on the ground. I smile, thinking Toriel must've put it there for when I woke up.
I glance at a folded peice of paper beside it, picking it up and unfolding it. In very fancy handwriting, it says:
"Hope you enjoy your breakfast, my child!~
With lots of love,
Toriel"
I smile. Just met the woman yesterday and I already feel like she would be the mother I never had. Picking up the plate, I head out of the room and into the living room where the table was.
Toriel was sitting on her rocking chair, reading a book. "Oh, good morning Opal!" She greets with a smile, closing her book. I put the plate on the table, stretching. "Mornin'." I slurred groggily.
She eyed the slice of the baked good. "You didn't eat the pie? Did it not look very appealing?" She questioned softly, tone a bit sad. "No, that's not the case at all!" I exclaim, hands up in defence. "I wanted to eat it with you so you could see my reaction; and judging by the smell, it'll be a very positive one!" I beamed at her, sitting on the chair in front of the plate.
Her smile slowly returned as she walked to the table, sitting down in the seat next to mine. "Alright then, dig in~!" She hummed.
I picked up a conveniently placed fork, digging into the slice of pie and finishing in a manner of minutes. I burped, leaning into the seat and rubbing my tummy. "That's was really good!" I exclaim.
"I'm glad!" Toriel cried, hands clasped together. I stood up and picked up my plate to go put it in the sink, but a furry hand stopped me. "Allow me to put that away for you." She offered, gently taking the plate from my hands. I smile, standing around awkwardly as she went into the kitchen.
I stare at the ground in thought, analyzing the situation I was currently in. I have no memory about my life before that dark place in the ruins, and I woke up sore in a patch of flowers. I met a talking flower, named... Flowey, was it? And now I had a sleepover with goat mom.
... What the hell was I thinking when I came here?
"... Are you okay, Opal?" Toriel's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I whipped my head to her direction, smiling awkwardly. "Yup! Sorry, I zoned out a bit..." You explained. "That's quite alright, my child." Toriel giggled. "Now as I was saying, would you like to read a book with me? It's called '72 Uses for Snails'." She offered, sitting down on the rocking chair once again.
I nodded absentmindedly, drifting back to thought as she pulled out the book and read the first couple or so of facts. Where will I stay, with Toriel? I dunno, this place seems pretty small already.
...maybe I'll ask her if I can explore beyond the ruins. Yeah! She'll understand, right...?
"...Are you sure you're alright, my child? You seem to be 'zoning out' an awful lot, is there something you want to talk about?" Toriel asked me in concern, placing a paw on my shoulder. "Hey, uh... Toriel... is there maybe a way... out of the ruins...?"
She looked abut taken aback, but then looked down in sadness. She got up, closing the book and putting it on the chair. "I... have to go do something. Stay here." She instructed boldly, running out of the room while mumbling something along the lines of "Just like the others..." and "Won't let it happen again..."
Out of curiousity, I followed her down the stairs and into a dim, purple hallway. Toriel stopped just before a turn, a dark aura surrounding her. This was surely a big change for the woman I thought was motherly year-round.
"Every time, it's the same. A human comes, they leave... They. D i e." Her serious tone told me she was not messing around, and her voice gave me the chills. "A human came not so long before you, bearing the power to stop Asgore...
But even their potential did not put an end to this madness we've been living in for who knows how many years...!" Toriel started to tear up, sniffling a bit. Trying to calm herself down, she walked a bit more, me following cautiously behind.
She turned around and faced me, eyes filled with tears. "Opal, please don't do this to me!" She fell to her knees, bawling into her hands. "I don't want to loose you, too!" I run up to her, hugging her. I understand that she wants to protect me with all her heart, and I appreciate that... wait...
"Toriel... if you want to protect me that much, why not come with me...?" I suggested, smiling at her softly. She looked up at me, eyes filled with hope and a twinge of worry. "But my child... where we'll stay, where we'll get gold-"
"We'll figure that out on the way." I cut her off gently, pulling her to her feet. Her worry went away as she grabbed my hand, speed-walking me to the exit. "Then let us go, my child!~" I could tell she was excited, and I giggled. "Let's!" I exclaim as we head out the ruins.
The thought of exploring new things with Toriel filled me with
