Twenty Two: Poison

Bruce waved the intrusion off as an occasional occurrence. He did not seemed fazed and all that we were attacked; neither did Dick.

"He was watching Daphne's room, I swear!" I say persistently as I sit in the garden the next day, washing Wipeout's fur.

Dick has the even more fun job of trying to scrub up Sunshine, who unlike his father is overexcited and wild when it comes to playing with the water under the morning sun.

I laughed as Wipeout shook his body, sending water in every direction.

"Gross, now this top will forever smell like dog," I complain with a laugh. Wipeout looks up at me, before rolling onto his back in the mud he had created, becoming dirty again.

I frown and spray him with the hose shortly.

"Good job Wipeout," Daphne says, as she passes us casually, laying on her back on her horse 99's back.

The sun being out gave her a good chance to tan I supp- "Seriously!?" I snap, when Tim's horse clops past as well, with Orion splayed out line an eagle on the saddle.

"Never trying to wash him again," Dick says when he walks up beside me, his shirt soaked.

"Well, when we'll move we'll get a pool and just chuck 'em in," I joke, walking away. It was the weekend, so I had to meet the Team at the warehouse.

"A pool? So...a house?" He asks.

I freeze on the spot. Um. Ah. Blegh.

Turning towards him, I grin nervously. "Haha no... Apartments have pools... Yeah. You know um- Err, I'm just going to go okay? Th-The Performer isn't going to catch itself- himself- herself- Uh... Bye."

I nervously scuttle away, trying not to throw up at how embarrassing that was.

After having breakfast, I left through the Batcave. M'gann is up and cooking breakfast for Gar, La'gann, Conner and Mal.

"Good morning," I say when I appear. They answer with multiple replies, groggy and tired.

"What's today's mission?" M'gann asks enthusiastically. "Well we're still working on the Black Widow case, and the Performer is yet to be caught. That's today's focus," I say.

As I stand by the monitors, the Team begin to show up, one by one.

I open up my tablet and continue the search I was on yesterday; apartments.

I am hoping to come to an agreement with Dick on our next location; he wants Blüdhaven. Not only is he the mini-city's hero, but there is enough crime there to keep him busy.

After talking to Bruce and Hal, the two advised me to find my own city to save. Lately I'm all over the place. Where the hell am I supposed to go?

"Batman to Girl Lantern," Bats suddenly appears on screen. I nod for him to go ahead. "There's a situation in Luna City."

"Villain?" I ask, as everyone falls silent to pay attention.

"Scarecrow. He's poisoned an outside suburb of the city. I'm sending Robin through with antidotes now. I am needer for a bigger problem; can you handle this?"

"Of course! Send the location to my ring," I say. He does so, before leaving. Robin and Daphne walk through the Zeta-beams, meaning the whole team is here.

I look over the map of the suburb, a plan forming in my head. Places where certain powers would work. Strategies. Ideas. Formations.

Wait.

"Where's Twilight?"

The confusion rings through the room as everyone looks around, like they expect to find her beside them. It occurs to me that time is of the essence.

"W-We'll find her later. Mal, I need you to stay back and run mission. Scarecrow is using his renowned fear gas on civilians in an outer-suburb of Luna City. Re-breathers do not last within the poison. I will run Alpha, as my ring protects me. Destiny, Blue Beetle, Red Butterfly; you're with me. We have protection from the gas."

"What about gas masks?" Gar asks.

"No. In his last attack, Batman discovered that the particles of the gas are fine, allowing them to seep through gas masks. Red and Blue's armours, plus mine and Destiny's rings should protect us," I explain.

"Hey! You're forgetting that I'm immune to poisons," Viper points out.

"You may not be immune to this."

"I am. Always have been. He's never succeeded in being able to poison me; no one will," she says.

"All right," I look at Jaime, "If it poisons her, get her out of there," I say. He nods.

"So what are the rest of us supposed to do?" Conner asks.

"Keep to the perimeter of the area. Keep civilians out, Scarecrow in and most importantly; do not let the gas escape where it is. Kid Flash, Swiftchick; I need you to be ready to create a wind strong enough to send the gas out of range. Stay on the north border of the suburb. Miss Martian, Tigress, Alley Cat and Robin, stick to the South. We'll bring the civilians to you. Beast Boy, Bumblebee, Batgirl, Lagoon Boy; the East. Superboy, Arsenal, Wondergirl and Static, the West. That's where the rest of the city will be, which mean Scarecrow, and his goons if any will be trying to escape through there. Understand?"

There are strong nods for everyone. "My Team; to my side."

Blue, Red, Viper and Destiny run over. "I need you two," I begin, handing Red and Blue the syringes of antidote, "to inject every civilian in the area. Once they have been shot, remove them through the South entrance. You'll need to be fast whilst we deal with Crane. Let's go!"

The two scarab-bearing heroes equip their weapons to fire the antidotes.

With that, we are through the Zeta-tubes. I use my ring to track the suburb, creating a platform for those who can not fly to travel on.

It is close, since the zeta is pretty out of the town's way. "Woah," I hear Karen breath.

"Mal, what's our distance?"

"You're one hundred meters away. You're currently west," he reports.

The houses in this areas must be for farming. They are large and spread out. Over one set of them; a white and green fog. Poison.

"West team, deploy," I think through Miss M's link.

Arsenal, Static, Superboy and Wondergirl drop down. We go around in a quiet circle, dropping off each team at each point.

When it is just my team, I allow both Midnight mana to fill me, and my ring mana to coat me.

"Let's go," I say, stepping into the misty fog.

Any hope the team had of seeing clearly is lost. Hana uses her ring to create a rope that will keep Destiny and Viper close.

"Blue, Red. Go. If you need clear, go up," Hana says shortly. The two nod and fly off in opposite directions.

There are quiet voices and soft whimpers as the three pass two men who had been poisoned.

As their eyes adjust, they realise they are right in the middle of a road, with four large houses lined up.

"Hello there."

Upon hearing a calm, unknown voice, the three turn. Scarecrow is sitting on the letter box of a house, ten hooded, masked men behind him.

"Jonathan Crane," Girl Lantern recalls.

"Oh, so you know me, Lantern."

"Well of course. It is the first time we have met though."

His head turns, making his deformed Scarecrow mask move towards Viper. "I had made this one in the hopes it would affect you... Clearly not," he says gently.

"Is that why you did this? Draw Viper in and pulls results out?" Lantern asks, ripping out a chain from her ring.

"Well, not exactly. It was the Batman I wanted to face. I guess I get his little hero spawn instead," he speaks with a soft tone, deathly calming.

"Kill the Lanterns. Bring me Viper," he says to his men. The ten figures come storming forward.

Immediately, Lantern has a chain swung around the first, ripping him backwards, sending him flying into a wall.

With a ball and chain this time, she wipes out two more. Viper burns with her acid and beats with her fighting skills. Laurel destiny fires off green mana daggers from her ring. Within seconds all ten are taken down.

"Is that the best you could do?" Viper challenges, swinging around her poisoned whip. Scarecrow gives a delicate shrug, when around fifty of the poisoned civilians come sprinting from every direction, straight towards the group of three.

They seem genuinely unfazed; until one of the poisoned, a small toddler-aged girl, punches a deep hole into the road with a sneer.

"You see, this poison does not just bring fear... It enhances the senses. Teaches the victim to attack," Scarecrow explains excitedly.

Hana begins forming a second plan. Quickly.
