Twenty Seven: Symbolic

'Hana? Hana!'

'Not the time Midnight.'

'Shove him away now! This is about Klarion!'

Regretfully, I place my hands on Dick's chest and give a little push. His lips leave mine and he looks confused. I sigh and kiss his cheek, before leaning back against the bedroom door.

"What about Klarion?" I say out loud, signifying that I was talking to my inner demon. Dick frowns slightly, holding my hand and walking across the room.

I sit on the edge of the bed.

'He has a soul in his soul machine, more powerful than the others.'

'How do you know?'

'The Mother told me.'

I laugh in vain, startling Dick who sat at his desk filling out some papers.

'Let me guess. She gave you some stupid cryptic saying that deduces to the answer, right?'

'Sort of. Don't be so rude to her. She'll send you to songstress hell. Anyway, the reason she wants you to deal with it, is because you're the reason the soul is stronger.'

'Me?'

'You. A soul is made stronger by sentimental attachment- especially attachments to mystic beings.'

'And that being is me?'

'Yes. You. Are you seeing where I am going with this?'

'Someone I think is dead is actually not?'

'Yes; someone who has a sentimental attachment to you, and has donned a mystical artefact.'

'Do I tell-'

'I wouldn't. You know how he gets. Plus, he might get his hopes up if it's Wally or something.'

If it's Wally.

"I've got to go," I sigh, standing up. Dick looks disappointed.

"Why?"

"Doctor Fate and Karianna believe he's up to something. I have to go to the Tower of Fate," I say. He's convinced and stands up.

"Hurry back," he smiles. I kiss him, before my uniform begins to cover me.

"I'm sorry. I'm so glad we found a house though," I smile, kissing him again before leaving the room to go down into the Batcave.

I take the Zeta to the new base.

It's thirty meters below a forest in Wisconsin. Above ground is a large cottage, where Superboy, La'gann, Gar, M'gann and Mal will live.

The Beltoron builders that Oa sent to us had strict instructions to create a mirror image of the mountain.

Only a small squad of technicians and the head builder remained.

"Green Lantern. Is everything sufficient?" One asks. Beltoron are small, chubby blue aliens with six arms. This make them efficient for building as they can also fly.

"I will take a look when I return," I say, before turning around to face the screens. I open and page and begin listing possible souls.

Wally - The Helmet of Fate

Tula - The Plaque of Oncarr

Jason - Crown of Saturn

'That's all,' I think to Midnight.

'It would appear so...'

'How would he have got his hands on one of them?'

She is silent for a moment. I go to ask again, but she speaks. 'Let me out. I'll show you.'

'No way.'

'It the only-'

'Not a chance.'

'Then you'll never save whoever he has.'

My fists clench and I shut my eyes. Please don't be a bad choice.

"Beltoro. Could I have a moment alone please?" I announce. The three of them who are setting up the com screen nod and leave.

Trying to gain as little remorse as possible, I recite the spell and create a small cut on the top of my hand.

Dark blue mist and liquid pours out, leaving the familiar cold feeling in my chest and limbs. The two substances stir into the form of Neridian Coldust.

She smirks at me as I connect a chain to her neck from my ring.

"That's not necessary," she says.

"Prove it," I reply.

Ignoring my challenge, she steps up to the board, looking over the three names. "Do you remember seeing Wally, when you erased everyone's memories?"

"Of course. He was the last one. What's that got to do with this?"

She spends a moment longer staring at the names, before her cold eyes move back to me. "Do you remember what happened?"

I glance at the floor. Every person I spoke to- Tula, Lana, Mom and the others -met me in a white haze. When I spoke to wally, the white haze turned blue.

"Everything was blue. I thought I heard him screaming when he faded. Oh my God... It's him, isn't it?"

Instead of giving a smirk or laugh, Midnight just shrugs with a serious expression. "It's likely. Blue is the colour of Limbo, usually associated with soul magic. Let us visit his places of their death."

I kneel down and open a portal to the Arctic.

Batgirl received a message from Girl Lantern to assemble the Team and send them out on their individual missions.

Before she could organise designations, Nightwing entered the warehouse.

"Nightwing!" Swiftchick cheers, crashing into his side with a hug. He smiles slightly and pats her head with a gloved hand, before looking at the Team.

"Is there an emergency?"

"No," Barbra answers.

"Good. I need to speak with you all. Is anyone here unavailable on Thursday?" He begins.

"Uh, you? Or did you forget about your anniversary...again?" Karen asks. Nightwing looks at her.

"It was one time."

"Mhm," she frowns at him.

"Besides," he continues, "that's what this is about."

"Your anniversary?" Alley Cat murmurs, before she begins smiling.

"What are you planning that involves us?"

We end up in the exact place where the last MD was. Where Wally died.

"It would not make sense for Klarion to take him. From the moment you met Wally, I knew he had next to no mystic potential. If anyone, he took Tula."

"If that's true then why was Wally surrounded by blue when I spoke to him?" I ask her.

"The colour could have meant anything. Limbo is just a theory. Besides; Tula died because of Klarion. That gave him every chance to harvest her soul. That Jason kid; he was dead when the Bat found him. Who knows what happened before that?... But I doubt it's him. There sure as hell was no sentimentality there."

"Right."

"Lost count of how many names her called you."

"I get it."

She smirks, before walking over the snow to the centre of where the storm was. She kneels down and brushes her fingers over the black ice.

"Wally... He was..." I gulp, "Disintegrated. You now that. What chance did Klarion have to get him?"

Her head snaps to the left all of a sudden. She jumps up and speed walks over to the edge of the bowl the storm created.

"Over there," she murmurs. I frown, but hover up, dragging her with me.

Oh my Disney.

"What the hell is that?" I whisper.

Over the snow are deep red symbols of magic. They would have been out of view, during the storm. Midnight lands beside them.

"There are two different spells here."

"The work of Klarion?"

"No."

I jump at the sound of a second voice, and look over my shoulder to see Doctor Fate standing above us.

"One is a spell that I may be able to decode. The second is simple Earth science."

I take a closer look at the red symbols on the left. "It's an equation," I murmur, kneeling down beside it. I scan it with my ring.

It brings up work that looks like something you would so in physics. "What is it?" I mumble.

"Something to do with the storm I presume," Midnight says.

"I know who to take it to," I conclude.
