Twenty Nine: Hero of Luna City
Monday night, Luna lies beneath me as I stand on the top of its tallest tower in the centre of the city.
If anything, it is much more colourful than Gotham; and extremely clean. From this point I see the hospital, the new Wayne Tech Tower being built, the tallest apartment, the bank tower, the lake; beautiful.
Beautiful and mine to protect.
And tonight I have already done much of that. Two bank robberies and three attacks. In less than six hours out here that happened.
I crack my knuckles and jump up onto the rails. I can be Doctor Shiloh of Royal Luna Hospital by day, and Luna City Hero Girl Lantern by night.
I decide to embark on a search for trouble to my left. I shoot off the tower and fly down much lower, into the view of some civilians.
Finding crime in times like this is not hard.
I spot a boy walking along the footpath, alone. His hands are in his pockets and he looks cold. That's one of Luna's biggest problems; child poverty.
Silently, I drop down onto the rooftops and walk alongside and above him in the shadows. I want to make sure he gets wherever he's going safely.
At the same time, I need a low-down on the gangs here.
Up ahead, there is a group of around four men walking towards the boy. In my head I can see the way this will turn out, so I reduce the sound of my walking and take a step further into the roof shadows.
The boy turns right into an alleyway. I creep over to the edge, staying low. Seconds later the four men join him.
"Have you got it?" The men ask.
"Yeah."
This boy reaches into his jumper pocket and pulls out a bag. He hands it to one of the four. Whilst that one checks the bag, another reaches into his windbreaker.
I ready incase it's a gun. However he pulls out a wad of cash. When the guy who holds the bag gives a nod, the money is handed to the boy.
"Same place, this time, same amount, next week; all right?"
The boy nods, before turning around and walking away.
I decide to follow him instead of the men. I follow him all the way through the dark streets. Everything is so silent he could easily hear me breath.
There is a small ping behind me. I freeze and turn around, making a fist, ready to use my powers to attack. No one is there.
I listen again, but what I hear is much worse. The boy sniffles and wipes his eyes, whimpering quietly. The little boy is crying.
He reaches the city, so I fly up, keeping high above him and the people still busy on the nighttime streets in the city square.
From the roof I leapt off, something catches my eye. A shadow; maybe the sound I heard before wasn't just my imagination.
My attention returns to the kid, however, as I zoom off.
He keeps his head down and his hands in his pockets. I watch as he trudges through the city, people bumping into him and shoving him without even realising.
Eventually he's on the other side of the city, back in the quiet suburbs. He can't be that old; maybe eleven? It made me sad to see someone so young walking the streets alone.
That's when I hear it.
Someone definitely lands heavily on the roof behind me, as silently as possible. I pretend to be unaware of them, placing my hand on my hip.
Three...two...one...
I flick open my hand and send my chain out, swinging it around. I drop into a kneel as I spin.
The stalker has no time to get away, as chain grapples their wrist. I tug, pulling the perp to the ground. I disperse chain before wrapping the person in mana, leaving their head in a sort of 'tank' so they could talker.
It take a moment to place whoever it it. Silver face mask with on eye exposed, black and orange trench coat, high-heeled shoes, obvious blonde hair, muscled build...
"Prankster," I recall softly. Before me stands one of Nightwing's biggest enemies.
"Girl Lantern," he replies in a smug tone.
"Looks like someone didn't go home after they were released from Belle Reve. What are you doing out of Blüdhaven, hm?" I question, bringing him down to my level.
"Could say the same to you."
"I'm not the hero of Blüdhaven."
"Maybe not, but it's where you and your little kiddie friends fight the most, huh?" People had really stupid names for the Team.
"Is there a reason you're following me, Oswald?" I ask, remembering his name from the amount of complaining Dick did about him.
"Is there a reason you're following the kid?"
"A junior hustler."
"And that's...you responsibility."
"I am a hero."
"So you care about one lousy kid?"
I detect something new in his voice.
"Why is it your concern that I'm following him?" I ask lightly, stepping forward. He stays silent for a moment.
"If I am not under arrest, you can not hold me. You're in the wrong; I've done nothing," he says. I roll my eyes. In the distance the sun is rising.
"Donning a mask is against your parole. I'll be sure to let your the Commissioner know. In the meantime," Using mana, I shove at his chest and remove his mask at the same time. I crush the metal, leaving it crumpled. "Stay out of my way," I tell him, turning around.
The boy is at the end of the street now. With a last glance at the pitiful villain on the ground, I leap off to follow him.
He gets home literally an hour later, when the sun has well brightened the sky slightly. He walks into a dingy looking apartment.
Using my ring, I detect he goes to the second floor. There is one other person in there. He, however goes to the kitchen and begins making food.
This child must do this often; and what a horrible job it is.
Those guys told him to go to the same place, the same time. Next week I'll catch him before he gets there and find out what's up.
I need to know who he is though. Plus, judging from the way Prankster acted towards him, I'm guessing he's important to him.
Instead of going straight home, I fly to the LCPD. Like in all Police Departments, the Commissioner's office is on the top floor.
Batman had taken the liberty of informing me to introduce myself to the Commissioner. Of course he didn't put it that way, but that's how I see it.
The window is my opportunity. The streets are starting to get busy with people getting to work or school. I dart over to the window as fast as I can, using my ring to slide it open.
I step in and inspect the office. The name plate is Commissioner Leroy Marcus. There is a photo of him and I assume his wife and kids.
He looks quite old and is fairly fat. Overall he looks quite jolly.
A hearty laugh sounds from behind the door, so I step out onto the ledge and close the window. About a minute later it opens again, thanks to the Commissioner wanting to air out his officer.
"I'm telling you, Jim. It's going to hell like your City. Last night was one of the few good nights! The boys said it was a hero. A Green Lantern, in fact. They didn't see which one."
He's on the phone. Judging from the information, it's Commissioner Gordon from Gotham. The cities were extremely close neighbours, so it made sense.
"What do you mean you knew she was coming!?....The Bat?...The League? ... Oh. I see."
He sounds pleased enough, so I peak through the window. He has his back to me. I take a seat on the window, leaning against the side.
"Well I'm glad. We could use a hero around here. She trained with the Lanterns as Emerald Star, I believe."
How does this information get out? I told like, one reporter.
"Thanks Jim. Thank you. Same to you. Goodbye."
He hangs up and sighs heavily, before looking at the ceiling. "Thank you God!" He gushes. Aw.
When he turns around, he jumps and yells out. Someone comes rushing to the door, so I turn and fall back out onto the ledge.
"What is it, Commissioner!?" A woman's voice says. Perhaps a secretary.
"N-Nothing, Lucy. Just irritated. I had gherkins for breakfast."
I screw my face up. Gross.
When I hear the door shut, I stand back up and leap through the window.
"Commissioner Marcus," I greet kindly.
"G-Girl Lantern," He does this odd little nod-bow thing.
"I'm assuming you know a little bit from that phone call. I'm here now to protect the city. Luna managed to maintain itself very much through the time of super villains...but it's failing. Under direction of the League I have come here to help."
The grin on his face shows me he's ultimately please. "I can't tell you how much that means to me! Last night was a good night for the department, with your help!"
"And it will be, most nights. If I am called off the planet I will send on of my Junior League Team members to help."
"Oh yes! I have heard about them!"
Redness covers his face and I find it adorable. This city clearly meant a lot to him. I place the crumpled mask of Prankster on his desk and explain where I got it from.
"I will help explore the current drug trade clearly going on," I tell him, walking back to the window. "Soon I'll have something you can alert me with, should you need help."
Carefully, I step back onto the ledge outside. "Thank you for your time," I tell him. He grins back, apple-cheeked.
"Thank you for yours," he says. I smile, nod, and fly away.
I want this city to know they're being protected.
The main street is flourishing right now with civilians and cars. I use the opportunity.
Mid air at the top of the street, I hold my ring up and try to picture bright green fireworks. It's all about the imagination.
They fire out in tiny explosions, getting bigger and bigger. I'm no spider man, but I race through the green sparks, bringing the attention to the sky.
People shout and point, smile and squeal. I may be a show pony, but I leave it at that, darting off to the zeta-tube.
I drop unseen into the tyre yard of Luna City and walk into where a practical cave of them is. Before I walk in, I give a tiny squeal.
Finally, I let the beam take me back to the cave.
"Why hello, hero of Luna City," I look up to see Nightwing at the monitors.
"Hello, hero of Blüdhaven," I reply, flying up to him.
He pulls me down into his arms, laughing.
"Fun?"
"Sad."
"Tired?"
"Definitely."
Fully aware of what my tasks will involve regarding investigation, Nightwing and I head to our room in silence, holding hands.
Just as I change into some pyjamas and climb into bed next to Richard, there is a gentle knock on the door.
"Come in Alfred," Dick says. He opens the door.
"Miss Shiloh; A Miss Kiara Wolf is here. She works for XXO Modelling and claims to have arranged a meeting with you."
I groan and slam back against the pillows. Right; my manager.
"I forgot."
"Haha. Go on," Dick teases, rolling away from me.
"Oh na-a. You're coming with me. You know how distracted I get. I'll be signing for campaigns and companies. I want you there to keep my focused," I say, shaking his shoulder.
He pretends to be asleep, so I whack his arm playfully. "Richard," I say. Not answer.
"Okay then. I guess I'll just sign what she hands me. All those lingerie deals where I'll be all exposed and-"
"Get dressed," Dick says, suddenly jumping out of bed. I smirk; I knew the thought of anyone else seeing me in less than clothes would get him.
"I'm still signing for lingerie!" I yell.
"Ha. We'll see," he replies.
