Thirty Three: This Is My Day
Sometimes we fall out of love with things we were so sure we'd love forever. That happened to me with this story over a year ago. Working on my other fanfics as well as finishing and graduating high school became priorities over this story. Now I have done the latter. I can't say I'm sorry for not updating, because there was no way anything I could have written would have been worthy, but I am sorry for not issuing an authors note on the story in particular. I did however write a letter to you all about how disgusted I was with some of the comments in my random book. Starting this story again took a lot out of me, partly because I still believe this isn't my best work and Hana isn't a complete character yet and partly because I don't remember a lot about it. I read WAC again and honestly I could not remember who Hazel or Alice were (Hazel is Red Butterfly, Alice is Alley Cat. I know now). So this story will be updated EVERY THURSDAY, so I do have more time to plan before the next chapter.
I hope you noticed that my writing has improved a thousand fold.
Hope I still have some readers left and I hope this story is still enticing. Despite my thoughts on it, it is my baby.

"So if you know the League, how come we've never met you?"
"W-Wait...so, what can you actually do?"
"You wanna go on the ferris wheel?"
"You were right to stick up for him. I'm proud of you."
"Why did Witch Boy save you!?"
"Don't!"
"You're my own star."
"Do you ever miss him?"
"Maybe because none of them have that body of yours."
"I keep trying to convince myself that you feel nothing for him."
"Hey, wanna go upstairs to my bedroom?"
"You managed to make me fall in love with you again."
I knew it was coming. Of course, I knew. We had been talking about it, after all. I never pondered how I would feel though. How I would react.
Remembering all of the little things he has said to me still don't compare to that sentence.
Will you marry me?
Will I marry him? Him? The person who has held my hand through the destruction and pain of the last six years? The person whose smile brings light on the darkest of days? The person who I've nearly died for countless times? Who has nearly died for me?
Will I marry him?
Is that even a question?
He should know.
I find myself staring down into the most perfect hue of blue in the universe. He's smiling up at me- that charming, mischievous smirk that I want to wake up to every morning and kiss every night.
Perhaps due to the lack of surprise, I find that I'm not streaming tears or anything like that, but rather just a big smile. We both share that same look for a second before breaking out into laughter.
Because this is ridiculous. We both know what I'm going to say. With a deep breath I reach for his face.
"Y-"
In a split second the flash of red in the distance catches my eye, stopping me mid-word and drawing my attention to the bushes against the fence.
Dick frowns, the same time as the small, orange cat jumps from the shrubbery. Teekl stops to sit down, licking at her paw before glancing at me with a nasty smirk only a cat could muster.
My reaction time is slower than I would have liked, but just as the large energy ball of red mana slams into my Lantern shield I can see his frail form to our right, a distance away.
Klarion.
"You weren't having a party without inviting me now, were you, beautiful Brie?" I hear him taunt.
"Impeccable timing," Dick growls, getting to his feet and slipping the ring box back into his jacket. Dammit.
I cast a midnight wall out in place of the Lantern one and everyone comes running, piling up behind us.
"What's he doing here?"
I chance a glance over my shoulder, looking for those who are going to be more than stunned watching me hold a magical wall up with my hands.
"They're...asleep," M'gann explains, obviously hearing my concern. So she knocked them out, those who know nothing of masks. My model friends Cleo and Bailey, my styling team, our high school friends...
They were all here to help make this happen. The team are from all around America and yet they still went out of their way to be here. Artemis was here, willing to witness something that was supposed to happen to her with Wally, but never will. And Dick was here, asking me one of the biggest questions there is in life.
I will not let him ruin this.
"So we just have to distract him, then get the cat, right?" Misty says. I vaguely hear the sound of her ring warming up. She, Virgil and Cassie start the movement to round the shield wall.
No.
I flex my hand and the wall extends, stopping them and drawing attention to myself.
"Hana?" I hear Dick say.
Klarion is slowly building energy with an evil smirk set upon his face. He knows exactly what he's interrupting and thinks he's going to do it without a hitch.
"I will not..." I begin, stepping back slightly, letting go of the wall but keeping it up. My Girl Lantern costume starts to spread over my skin.
"...let you ruin..." This day is mine and my fiancé's.
I don't remember the last time I felt such power as I do now. Midnight mana coursing through my veins and Lantern energy surrounding me like wind.
"...This day for me!"
I swing my arm widely and the wall shatters into a thousand shards of sharp, energised glass. Klarion has seconds to react as they all turn, sharp edge pointing at him as they dart straight for his position.
He just manages to throw a shield up that absorbs them but I'm ready for it, pushing off the ground and flying up into the air with a somersault and raining down the exact same attack from above.
'Do you plan on any assist?' I ask in my head. She knows it's directed at her.
'Why Sparkling One. How odd of you to ask for my help,' Midnight responds. 'You could let me out. We can do this together.'
When the sky attack disperses I'm already bringing in two from the sides. Through all of the debris and dust the copious amount of magical energy had scratched up I can see Klarion's face, angered and determined.
'We can do this together without you needing to be out here,' I tell her.
'Perhaps... Oh, and by the way? Friendlies.'
I glance to the ground to see some of the team etching forward like they might want to help. I wave a hand that forces them back behind what I am considering the field of battle.
"He's mine!" I hiss, a little too harshly. "Find the cat!"
Without waiting for their response I let Midnight's 'help' happen. I don't know what changes physically, exactly, nor do I have time to check but I can feel a shift in power.
Finally I decide to land in front of him. I wave my hand again to cast a force that pushes the dust away. It was only supposed to be a little gust of wind and instead it nearly tears apart a ticket booth close by.
So she really does increased my power, tenfold.
Revealed is Klarion, kneeling in the beaten ground, breathing slightly laboured with an utterly bewildered and clearly enraged look on his face.
I want to glance at the team, smile, give them some reassurance. I want to shout yes from across the grass at Dick. Just so he knows.
Instead I keep my eyes glued to Klarion, as his surprised rage turns to an evil, dark chuckle. In his high-pitched creepy voice it's only made more bone chilling.
"So," he draws out, as he starts to stand, "I was right. You're finally one with her. Wasn't sure when I saw her dragging you around on a chain like a dog, Neridian. You looked like a trained familiar."
Knowing he's not talking to me but still, technically, conversing with me is a little odd but somehow recognisable. Was that year I spent with him, a year he spent with Midnight?
'Tell him he's the one who's whipped, doing my father's work for him.'
"She says you're whipped. You're her father's pet, doing everything he tells you to."
He dusts off his sharp-tailed coat, "The Lord of the Night Sky and I are equals."
I snort, "Yes, congratulations. You're equal to a man who has plans to wed with his daughter. That must feel very empowering for you."
'Nice!'
"Ah, so you visited the Songstress realm, hmm? Have a little chat to Midnight's brothers?" He says, slowly walking in a circle. I follow the movement to keep him directly across from me.
"They told me what you're looking for, Klar. The Light of the Midnight. You and Saraix want to use it. But for that you need me and her, which is not happening."
With a change in footing I charge Midnight manner down my arm and picture the biggest sword I can in my mind. The long, thick blade is formed by my Lantern ring before being charged with Midnight mana.
'Kill him!'
It weighs nothing, because it's energy. I swing my ring arm, dragging the sword through the air. It crashes into where Klarion was but he has already teleported away. I sense him behind me and repeat the action. It's a game of speed.
Eventually the number of swords doubles, then triples, then triples again. Eighteen blades make all sorts of crashing, zapping noises and all he can do is avoid them.
Each attack is oozing with magical energy that must dampen his own because for a while he doesn't even have time to attack. It allows me to glance at the others.
Some of them are watching my fight, particularly because it's better for them not to intervene. Dick, Babs, Tim, Mal, Artemis and Alice are observing me trying to hack Witch Boy to pieces.
The others are searching for Teekl, who is not in beast form yet. That's strange.
All I need to do is keep him from hurting them.
When he slips up by teleporting to a space where there is nowhere to step I immediately throw down the closest sword. The shield he throws up barely holds against the magic and as a result he gets slammed into the ground, hard.
It doesn't cut him but it obviously hurts. It doesn't exactly work to my advantage either because that's when his eyes flash red, his skin becomes more gaunt and I've awoken the real Lord of Chaos.
The swords disperse and against my ring arm I prepare a mana fuelled Lantern shield, the other hand wielding a ball of the Midnight energy. I'm ready for a battle and so is she.
'Think the bug kid is onto that little rat,' Midnight says. I don't look over my shoulder to search for Jaime. I'm too busy watching the red pentagram cover the ground surrounding Klarion.
"Hanabrie, Hanabrie, Hanabrie," he says, getting up with one hand covering his face and the other swirling red magic around his palm. "You're a little fool."
The sound of the magic blast that comes my way is almost deafening. It's like every drum and symbol in the world being crashed at once paired with the nauseating sound of nails on a chalk board.
If I didn't have the shield up I'd probably be dead.
"I only came to get an answer to a question," he states in that annoying, whiny tone. The blast is one stream of energy that I have to push against with all my might.
Shatters are beginning to show in the green, crackling Midnight energy flowing through it. Were it not for that, my Lantern powers would not hold up.
"And- that- q-question is?" I struggle out, feeling my feet actually begin to kick up grass from where I'm having to push from.
"Whether or not you have finally discovered the Light of the Midnight. This fight has shown me, Beautiful Brie, that not only do you have it but you can use it."
As he finishes the sentences he pulses the magic and the force is so great that it sends my flying backwards. I manage to catch myself and the first weapon that comes to mind is a mana-infused spear.
Klarion scoffs at it, waving his hand. The sudden change in his demeanour is startling.
"You won't need that. I'm not going to hurt you. We need you. I have a report to make now. Saraix will be delighted to know that his weapon is ready for the taking," he smiles.
I remember what Neridian's brothers told me. We'll have three months.
"I'll be back for you, beautiful Brie."
Nothing is more irritating than knowing that he came here and interrupted this perfect day only to leave without a proper fight.
"Why now? Why this very moment!?" I shout at his retreating back. With the retort I ditch the spear his way and it bursts into more shards.
Teekl appears in his arms and he just manages to duck the shards, making them fly into the portal he created behind him.
He looks over his shoulder, but not at me. I don't have to follow the gaze to know that he's staring at Dick.
"I don't like it when people try to make a claim on things that belong to me."
With that, he gets one foot through the portal. Impulsive me (or Midnight) brings final words to my head.
"You're not invited to the wedding!"
I see him attempt to turn around at that but Teekl leaps into the portal, pulling him with her.
The automatic silence that follows is like a joult of reality. The fair went from peaceful sanctuary to hellish battleground in just the minutes we fought, resulting in three rides and booths being completely destroyed.
Dammit, is anything going to be normal?
'This isn't good, Sparkling One.'
'No kidding.'
'This needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.'
'I know that. A report needs to be drawn and then a brief, maybe to everyone possible. And maybe I should present-'
'For now I think there's a question that still needs answering.'
I was so caught up in the fact that Saraix will soon know the truth, that I barely registered the hand resting on my shoulder.
Automatically I place my hand atop of it. I was kneeling on the ground, staring at the grass, but I know it's him.
When I flick my hair out of the way, to look up at him, it's with a big smile. I'm covered in dirt and my uniform must be part Midnight part Girl Lantern and my heart is beating so fast it should be imploding.
Instead of focusing on any of that. The fear, the possibilities, the pain. I go for the one thing that matters.
"Yes."
His look of concern vanishes, replaced by one of happiness and...surprise?
"Yes?" He grins.
"Yes!" I exclaim, jumping to my feet. "Of course I'll marry you!"
He does this odd sort of giggle that I can only repeat, as he reaches for me. I haven't merely forgotten what just happened, but like I said; Klarion is not ruining my day.
"What did you think I was going to say, you big dork?" I laugh, muffled by his shoulder. He holds me tightly.
"You were awesome," he whispers. I feel the energy slowly fading, Neri-...Midnight drawing it in. I bring my uniform back into my ring as well.
My fiancé. This is my fiancé.
I'm going to be Hanabrie Grayson.
We're getting married.
