Seventeen-year-old Naeia Lorae has always been the outcast. The ugly girl. The fat girl. Despite being a renowned romance author, she has never quite lived the love life as her beloved fictional characters had. Seeking a solution to her issues, she stumbles upon "Real Beauty", an app that promises to transform her into a beautiful swan. However, her quest for validation takes a sinister turn as the app, instead of granting approval, curses her with a beastly transformation, mirroring her internal struggles.
Amidst the sorrows her curse bestowed on her, Naeia crosses paths with a voracious reader of her stories, Nathan Maxwell, who seemingly gazes beyond the grotesque surface and appreciates the beauty within her. Together, they scour the city in an effort to unravel secrets of the sinister app and on the way, form a knitted bond born from shared vulnerabilities in order to break the curse.
The two must navigate a world obsessed with appearances, even encountering a media storm surrounding Naeia's affliction that puts their connection to the ultimate test. As the clock ticks, Naeia and Nathan discover an unforeseen power within themselves, one driven to confront whoever created the horrific app.
Will their unconventional bond withstand the challenges, proving that true beauty transcends curses and societal norms? And perhaps, maybe even... find love on the way?

BONUS CHAPTER #49: How Nia Fell In Love With Naruto
Naruto rubbed Nia's head as she laid in a bed, still recovering from when he had incidentally attacked her when he had transformed.
He had a distressed expression on his face. His mind was still thinking of when she had tried to harm herself while they were out in the rain before he thankfully stopped her.
"...Why?" He croaked. "Why... would you ever wanna... take your life away?"
Nia stirred upon hearing his voice and weakly, she opened her eyes.
"A-Am I dead? Is this the afterlife?"
"Curly Brow..." Nia heard her name.
"N-Naruto?" She looked at the blond, confused as to why he was beside her.
"Curly Brow... are you... still hurting...?"
"Hm?"
"Out there... what you did... in the rain..."
"?"
"You... tried... to kill yourself..."
"...Oh."
Naruto made a face.
"What do you mean "oh"? Don't you realize what you tried to do to yourself?!"
"That... doesn't matter what I tried to do."
"Doesn't mat- what the hell are you talking about?! You really tried to kill yourself out there, ya know! You know how serious that is?!"
"Who... cares if I tried t-"
"Quit it! What you tried to do was no joke! You realize how much that would've hurt the people who care for you?!"
"Shut... shut up," Nia told him weakly.
"Don't tell me to shut up! What you tried to do was extremely selfish!"
"Shut your mouth, Naruto," This angered the girl.
"How about you apologize for trying to take your life!"
"I had... to do... what I needed. I'm... sad I failed to get the job done."
"What the hell are you talking about?! You're lucky I stopped you when I did!" Naruto yelled.
"..."
"Curly Brow..."
"..."
"Curly Brow!"
"..."
"CURLY BROW!"
"WHAT?!"
"LISTEN TO ME WHEN I TALK TO YOU! WHAT YOU DID IS SERIOUS, YA KNOW!"
Nia sighed.
"Seriously... don't act like you actually care," Nia breathed.
"What?" Naruto was shocked at her words.
"I... was close. So close to ending it all. So close to making my suffering end."
"!"
"If you'd just let me end it all... I'd be in peace right about now."
"That's... crazy," Naruto's eyes trembled.
"Wanting... to end one's suffering... isn't crazy. It's... reasonable. Makes... perfect sense."
"Ya, but not by stabbing their heart out with a kunai!"
"You... ruined it. You ruined it for me. If it weren't for you... I'd be in a happier place right now," Nia croaked.
"Curly Brow... don't say that. You belong here... not-"
"Be quiet... I belong elsewhere. Not here in this horrible world."
"Curly Brow... I... don't get it. You... have so much hatred. So much hatred... for yourself... for others... for everything. Why... do you let that control you?Why do you-"
"Like you'd understand..." Nia muttered.
"I... really-"
"?"
"Curly Brow..."
Nia sighed and sat up but quickly winced.
"Hey! Be careful!" Naruto laid his hands on her in worry.
"Hm?" Nia blushed and stared at him.
"You're still hurt from when I had transformed. You need to take it easy, ya know."
Nia's blush deepened at his concern. However, this quickly angered her and she shoved his hands off her.
"Don't... touch me," She told him.
"Hm?"
"I... don't need your help... nor your pity."
"But you're hurt! You shouldn't-"
"Don't worry about me! I'm fine- Ah!" Nia gritted her teeth when she felt a sharp pain in her body.
"See?! You need to lay back down! You shouldn't be moving around so much, ya know!"
"Oh quit it! Don't act like you care!"
"!"
"Unfortunately, I'm gonna be just fine. I don't need your hel-"
"I don't get it! Why?! Why do you hate me so much?! I try so hard to be nice to you! I try so hard to be your friend! I try so hard to be there for you! I try to so hard to-"
"Stop it..." Nia mumbled.
"!"
"I... don't..." She said. "I don't... hate you. That's... the problem."
"Hm?"
Nia turned her back toward Naruto and lowered her head, her bangs casted a shadow over her eyes as a blush stretched across her face.
"Curly Brow-" Naruto opened his mouth.
"That's enough..." Nia attempted to stand out of bed and walk, but when she did, pain seared throughout her body and she tripped, however, there to catch her... was Naruto.
"Huh?" She blinked when she realized she was in a pair of arms.
When she looked up, she saw as Naruto was holding her up.
"You... okay?" He gazed softly into her eyes.
Seeing his expression, Nia reddened.
"G-Geez, I didn't need help or anyth- Kya!" She yelped when Naruto pulled her to his chest and wrapped his arms around her.
"C-Curly Brow..." He tightened his hold on her.
"N-Naruto?" Nia's face was completely red. "What... are you doing?"
"I... was afraid," Naruto spoke. "When you did what you did... I thought I was going to lose you. I thought... I was never gonna see you again, hear you again, talk to you again. I... was terrified, ya know?"
"Naruto..."
"Seeing you like this... not just physically hurt due to me losing control... but also mentally and emotionally wounded deeply over how you've been treated by others... When I see you... carrying all that stress and unbearable depression on your shoulders like this... it hurts me... so bad."
"!"
"I get that... you hate me... for whatever reason, but to be honest... I can't hate you back. For some reason, I feel such an urge to protect you... to hold you. I... don't know what's wrong with me. Just the thought of leaving you to deal with all this pain and suffering alone really... rubs me the wrong way," Naruto said gently. "I... want to be here for you. I want... to keep you close to me. I want... to keep you safe. I want... to be your friend. I want... to treat you with kindness and accept you as you are."
Hearing this, Nia's heart thudded in her chest.
This guy... what's... with him? Why is he saying this to me? Why is he acting like this? Does... he not see how hideous I am? Does he... not realize how horrible of a person I am? Does he... possibly like m-
"The girl I like... her name... is Sakura..."
Nia's eyes widened when she remembered Naruto's words from not that long ago. Immediately, she pushed off Naruto.
"Curly Brow... why'd... you move away?" Naruto questioned.
"I forgot... there's a girl... you already like... or maybe even love," She said almost painfully.
"Hm?" Naruto tilted his head. "What does that have to do with anything?"
"It's just... the way... you were... holding me..." Nia was still blushing.
"?"
"I just wondered... why'd you... wanna hold me like that?"
"?"
Nia sighed.
"Never mind..."
She then lowered her eyes.
"You probably... should've just let me fall. Maybe it would've finally ended me for good."
"Don't say that!" Naruto yelled.
"You're... wasting your time trying to play hero. If my injuries don't kill me... my wounded soul will."
"!"
Nia looked out the window on her left to see the nice starlit sky.
"I've been cooped up in this room forever. I need fresh air," She said.
"You can't get really far with your injuries..." Naruto turned his back toward her and placed his arms behind him. "So I'll help you..."
"Hm?"
"Get on... I'll carry you..."
"You're gonna carry me? Don't you always say I'm fat?"
"You might be pretty fat, but luckily, I'm strong so-"
"Watch your mouth," Nia told him.
She then hopped on his back.
"Gah... you really are heavy," Naruto carried her up as he stood.
"Would you stop pointing that out already? I know... that I'm big."
"Well, I'm stronger so I can handle it..."
"Sure..."
He'll probably drop me in thirty seconds... if he can even get that far.
Naruto brought Nia to the hall and began his way down.
As he did, all his mind could think of was what Nia had said and did.
"What I want... is to be normal. I don't wanna be noticed in any way, shape, or form. I hate being the reason why everyone can make a cruel joke because of something out of my control. I hate feeling as if I'm worthless. I hate feeling as if nothing matters. I hate feeling as if I should die. I hate being treated as if I should die. I hate feeling as if I have nobody. I hate feeling as if I'm absolutely uncared for. I'm just a waste to the world... I can't take it anymore! It's too much for me to handle. I tried to make my life better, but nothing ever works. I need to relieve myself."
"Naruto... Do you wanna know what happens to most people when others push them to the brink of their sanity? When they're trapped in a corner of eternal unhappiness and suffering? Do you wanna know what goes through the minds of most when they're constantly insulted, ridiculed, mocked, ignored, laughed at, and treated as if who they are doesn't matter because they don't fit what others call "normal" on a daily basis? Every time they even step outside?"
"I don't know how I got so far as to live this long with everyone hating me and I hating myself as well. My life is just a living hell! I'll never get to be happy nor normal. I'll always just be this creature who nobody cares for. Someone who looks like me doesn't deserve to live. I'll just do the world a favor and just kill myself like they've asked."
There was an ache in his heart over her words so bad, he physically had to stop walking.
Nia tilted her head.
"Forgive me..." He lowered her down. "I... need... to use the bathroom."
"But we've barely made it into the hall. Don't tell me my weight was too much for you..."
"Hn..." Naruto only stared at her with a small smile.
There was something in the way he looked at Nia. It looked so sorrowful... almost like he was gonna give in and die. He appeared hollow and there was no life in his expression.
"I'll... be right back. Stay close to this room over here. Don't dare try and move, all right?" He whimpered.
"...Sure. Whatever," Nia agreed.
Naruto watched as Nia shuffled towards a nearby room, her movements still slightly awkward due to her injuries. Naruto moved further down the hall, a spot to where he believed he was out of earshot from Nia. He couldn't shake off the weight of her words, echoing in his mind like a haunting melody.
Curly Brow... wants to die. All because... she feels so alone, so unloved, so unwanted... so ugly. She feels like there's not really anyone she can go to. No one... who cares to accept her for who she is. She's suffering... so bad. So much...
How could he not have seen the depth of her pain before today. How could he have not realized the magnitude of her broken soul?
Leaning against the wall in the center of the hallway, Naruto tried to hide his distress from Nia. He closed his eyes, taking deep breaths, attempting to compose himself. But the turmoil inside him only intensified as he recalled every harsh word, every painful expression she had directed at him.
She hates me. She hates everyone. She hates everything. Her heart is filled with so much darkness. So much pain. I've met quite a few people with a broken spirit, but Curly Brow... she's taking her situation the hardest. I'm trying so hard to help her, but... she keeps pushing me away. She keeps trying to deal with her pain by herself as if no one can possibly want to support her. I can tell... she's truly given up on life. On finding others who accept her. On finding her purpose.
He remembered his own past, the loneliness that had once consumed him. How he, too, had felt unloved and unwanted. How he had been treated as an outcast, mocked and ridiculed by those around him. The memories flooded back with a force that threatened to overwhelm him.
This reminds me so much of my childhood. I felt so alone and unwanted, too. Everyone hated me. People wanted me to die. It was so hard to make friends. I was always by myself. No one to talk to or come home to. I understand how she feels she hates everyone who has mistreated her. I felt that exact same way growing up with those in the Leaf. They treated me so cruelly. Like I was a germ. Like I was a monster. There were so many times I wanted to give up also.
I just... I just...
Naruto's chest tightened as he then thought about Nia's attempts to end her own life. The idea of her in so much pain, so desperate for relief, tore at his heartstrings. He felt a surge of empathy for her, a deep ache for the suffering she had endured.
I just can't believe... that Curly Brow wants to die. That she tried to kill herself. She was so close in succeeding at it too if I hadn't stopped her. Why? Why does Curly Brow want to die? Why would she try to kill herself? Why would she possibly give up on her life? Why would she try to stab her heart out? Why...? Why...? WHY?!
Tears welled up in Naruto's eyes, blurring his vision as he struggled to contain his emotions. His silent tears soon turned into sobs, wracking his body with their intensity. He leaned heavily against the wall, raising his forearm to his face and his shoulders shaking with the weight of his grief.
"Kuh... Cur-Curly Brow... Kuh... why would you... Kuh.... try to hurt yourself? Why would you try and... Kuh... try and leave me like t-that?"
In that moment of vulnerability, Naruto allowed himself to feel the full extent of his pain. He let go of the facade of strength he had been holding onto, allowing himself to be consumed by his emotions. It was a cathartic release, a raw expression of his love and concern for Nia.
Nia sat where Naruto had left her, her thoughts swirling with confusion and uncertainty. She couldn't shake the image of his distressed expression from her mind—the sorrowful look in his eyes, the hint of desperation in his voice. What was his motive? Why had he been so kind to her despite her constant rejection?
"Why does he care so much?" Nia mumbled to herself, her gaze drifting towards the spot where Naruto had disappeared down the hallway. "What does he see in me? Why bother trying to help someone like me?"
She couldn't understand it. Naruto's actions didn't make sense to her. He had every reason to walk away, to leave her to her own devices. Yet, he had chosen to stay, to offer her his support and kindness, even in the face of her harsh words and rejection.
"He's just... different," Nia murmured, a pang of guilt tugging at her heart. "Maybe... maybe he sees something in me that I don't."
As she pondered Naruto's motives, a faint sound caught her attention—a soft, muffled sobbing coming from somewhere nearby. Curious, Nia pushed herself to the edge of the wall, wincing as pain shot through her body.
Peering over the edge, Nia's eyes widened in surprise as she spotted Naruto, his shoulders shaking with silent tears. Her heart clenched at the sight of him, his expression twisted with anguish and grief.
"I... I care so much about you, C-Curly Brow... Kuh... but you just don't want to stay alive on this earth w-with... Kuh... me..." Naruto sobbed. "How could y-you possibly... Kuh... want to kill y-yourself?"
Nia's gaze fixed on Naruto as he cried silently. She watched him, her heart heavy with a mixture of emotions—shock, disbelief, and a growing sense of regret.
"He... cares about me?" Nia whispered to herself, her voice barely above a murmur. "He... really cares about me?"
As she listened to Naruto's sobs, the weight of his words sank in, washing over her like a tidal wave. She had never imagined that someone could care about her so deeply, could be so affected by her pain and suffering.
"I... I didn't realize," Nia muttered, her voice tinged with regret. "I didn't realize how much he cared."
She had spent so long pushing Naruto away, rejecting his kindness and friendship at every turn. And now, as she listened to him cry over his immense care for her, she couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt gnawing at her insides.
"I... I've been so cruel to him," Nia admitted, her voice barely audible over the sound of Naruto's tears. "I've... I've pushed him away, treated him like he didn't matter. And all this time... all this time, he's been trying to help me, trying to be there for me."
Tears pricked at the corners of Nia's eyes as she watched Naruto, her heart aching with the weight of her own remorse. She had been so focused on her own pain, her own suffering, that she hadn't stopped to consider how her actions were affecting those around her—especially someone who cared about her as deeply as Naruto did.
What... an idiot I was. This whole time... the whole time he did care. This whole time, he was trying to help me, and yet here I am... being a complete retard.
Nia blinked, feeling something wet trickling down her cheeks. Confused, she reached up and touched her face, her fingertips coming away damp with tears. It was a strange sensation, one she couldn't quite place. She had never experienced anything like it before—a warm, tingling feeling in her chest, accompanied by an overwhelming urge to cry.
"What... what is this?" Nia murmured to herself, her brows furrowed in confusion. "Why... why am I crying?"
She wiped away her tears, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar emotions swirling inside her. It was like a whirlwind of conflicting feelings—sadness, longing, and something else she couldn't quite identify.
"Is... is this what it feels like to be sad?" Nia wondered aloud, her voice barely above a whisper. "But why... why do I feel like this? What could possibly be making me cry?"
She racked her brain, trying to pinpoint the source of her distress. Was it because of her injuries? Because of Naruto's words? Because of the realization that she had been pushing him away all this time?
"No... no, that can't be it," Nia muttered, shaking her head. "It's something else... something deeper."
She closed her eyes, focusing on the strange sensation in her chest. It was like a weight pressing down on her heart, a heaviness that seemed to consume her from the inside out.
"Could it be... could it be because of Naruto?" Nia whispered, her breath catching in her throat. "But why... why would he make me feel like this? What... what could he possibly mean to me?"
She thought back to all the times Naruto had been there for her, all the times he had shown her kindness and compassion. She remembered his unwavering support, his unshakeable belief in her, even when she had given up on herself.
"He... he cares about me," Nia realized, her voice barely audible over the sound of her own thoughts. "He cares about me more than anyone ever has. He's... he's always been there for me, even when I didn't want him to be."
Tears welled up in Nia's eyes again as she thought about Naruto, about everything he had done for her. She felt a lump forming in her throat, a tightness that made it difficult to breathe.
"But... but why?" Nia choked out, her voice trembling with emotion. "Why would he care about someone like me? Someone who's so broken, so damaged? Someone who's... who's never been good enough for anyone?"
She buried her face in her hands, trying to quell the storm of emotions raging inside her. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the feeling that was gnawing at her heart—a feeling she couldn't quite name.
"What is this... what is this feeling?" Nia whispered, her tears flowing freely now. "Why does it hurt so much?"
She reached up and touched her tears, feeling the wetness on her fingertips. And in that moment, it hit her like a bolt of lightning, a realization so powerful it took her breath away.
"I... I love him," Nia breathed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I love Naruto."
The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning and significance. And as Nia finally allowed herself to accept the truth of her feelings, a sense of peace washed over her—a sense of clarity that she had never felt before.
"I love him," Nia repeated, her heart swelling with a newfound sense of hope and happiness.
Naruto had his face in his elbow, trying his best to not die of heartbreak. He couldn't stop crying no matter how hard he tried. Nia was hurting and he was dying in spirit for her.
"N-Naruto...?" His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Nia's tearful voice calling out to him from down the hallway. His eyes widened and he quickly wiped away the last of his tears and plastered on a smile as he turned to face her.
"Naruto, are you okay?" Nia asked, tear marks etched in her features.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Naruto replied, his voice slightly hoarse from his earlier sobbing. "Just had to... uh... clear my throat."
Nia studied him for a moment, her gaze searching his face for any sign of distress. Naruto did his best to maintain a reassuring expression, hoping she wouldn't see through his facade.
"Huh? Look at you. You've been crying? What happened?" He questioned as he neared her once more and kneeled down.
In that moment, Nia wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face into his shoulder.
"I... I'm sorry, Naruto," Nia whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm sorry for pushing you away, for not letting you in. I... I didn't realize... I didn't realize how much you cared."
"Curly Brow, what happened? Why are you sad? There's nothing for you to cry about. It's okay."
"I... I hurt you... Kuh... I hurt you so bad, Naruto. I... Kuh... I made you c-cry. I'm... I'm s-so sorry!" She cried her eyes out.
But even as she spoke the words, Nia knew that mere apologies weren't enough to make things right—to undo the hurt she had caused, the walls she had built around herself. She knew that if she wanted to truly move forward, to heal and find peace, she would have to confront her own demons, to tear down those walls brick by brick, and let Naruto in.
"I... I don't know if I deserve your kindness," Nia admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But... but I want to try. I want to let you in, to accept your help, your friendship. I... I don't want to push you away anymore."
And as she made the silent vow to herself, Nia felt a glimmer of hope stirring within her—a small flicker of light in the darkness that had consumed her for so long. She didn't know what the future held, didn't know if she would ever truly be able to overcome her pain and suffering. But she knew one thing for certain—she wasn't alone, not anymore.
Hearing her words, Narito got choked up, and almost immediately, he fell back into an agonizing sob, holding Nia the closest he ever had.
"C-Curly Brow, just please... Kuh... never t-try to hurt yourself again. Never try to... Kuh... take your-your life away. Please s-stay with me. Stay with me cause I... I..."
"I promise to never hurt myself again, Uzumaki. I'll n-never hurt you like that a-again. I care about you so much. Thank you for being my fr-friend."
And with Naruto by her side, Nia felt like maybe, just maybe, she could find the strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
