Chapter XXXVII: The Light Prognosticus
It's been a little over two weeks since Michael and the Crystal Gems left to get their true family. Robert couldn't complain, though, as Lapis Lazuli was there with him. Often, Lapis left to get materials for sculptures, which she calls "Meep-Morp". At first, this got under the skin of Robert, but over the course of the time he's been at the barn, he's gotten used to it
Robert spent the time alone mostly playing video games, piano, and sleeping, to help him get over the weakness his sword left him. Robert was fully healed by that point, so Dr. Maheswaran was wrong about the time Robert needed to stay out of the front lines.
While in the middle of his piano lessons, Lapis came back. Robert was completely lost in the melody he created, and she just stayed quiet and listened to it, completely mesmerized by it.
When he stopped, he noticed her there and became somewhat flustered.
"Wh-What are you doing here?" he asked.
"That was beautiful," she said. "You play the Piano?"
Robert blushed. "Yeah..." he said, ashamed. "Everybody says I'm a nerd for it..."
"Well, then screw those people. I like that you're able to play an instrument so well," said Lapis.
Robert nodded and continued playing the melody, this one more energetic and joyful than the last.
Just then, Bismuth came in. "Hey, Rob," she said.
"Oh, hey, Bismuth," Robert said, now more confident in his skills. "Like my melody?"
"It's...interesting. When did you learn to use that instrument?" Bismuth asked.
"I...don't like to talk about my past..." Robert responded, turning around and silencing the room. "Anyway, what do you need, ma'am?"
"Well, I found out that your sword wasn't always cursed," Bismuth said.
"What do you mean?" Robert asked, "And how did you find that out; doesn't Pearl have it?" Robert asked.
"Well, yes. But look," she said, handing him what appeared to be the book Garnet held.
"This is the Light Prognosticus," Bismuth said. "And it will save you a lot of time when looking for the next melody."
Robert raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" he asked.
Bismuth opened the book to the map of all the locations, one of them scratched off.
"Well, you know how you've been learning the melodies by doing various things? Well as it turns out, these locations are actually the burial grounds of the mages who made the melodies," Bismuth explained.
"Mages? Magic isn't real, it's just glorified science," Robert said.
"And what do they have to do with the Sacred Song?" Lapis asked.
"I told you, they wrote the song." Bismuth said, handing him the Prognosticus.
Robert flipped to a page that explained the creation of the prophecy.
It stated that long, long ago, before Pink Diamond came to Earth, the Great Wizard Merlin received word during his intellectual pursuits that a darkness would shroud not only Earth, but the whole universe. In response, he tasked eight of his highest-ranking mages to find a hero to combat this evil, and record their findings in the Light Prognosticus. When they returned, they only found Edward of the Light clan, while a mere knave, but Merlin knew he carried the blood of a brave knight.
Merlin taught him all he knew, and Edward was an excellent student. In fact, he even found love with the first mage, the fair Lady Primulieri. Merlin warned that their child would not be the hero in question, rather, he would be an ancestor of the hero. Merlin commanded that the hero be given the Light Prognosticus.
Merlin knew he would not live long enough to train the hero no matter what magic he used, so he tasked the mages to make a melody that would grant the hero his power, and so to prevent the darkness from tainting the melody, he asked they all separate once their melody was completed. And that is what they did.
Merlin knew the Darkness was cunning, and mere abilities would not be enough, so he placed a spell on Edward's legendary sword that only those with his heroic blood may wield it. Edward took the sword and hid it where he believed darkness would never think to look: Underwater.
"Lapis, would you please come with me?" Robert asked.
"Of course, where to?" she asked.
"Where I got my sword," Robert said. "Bismuth, you coming?"
"I gotta make you a replacement sword," Bismuth said.
They went back to the beach house, which was still empty, Lapis created a bubble around Robert that allowed him to breathe underwater. They found several things at the bottom of the ocean, such as a pineapple, a rock, and a tiki.
They eventually found the underwater labyrinth, which Robert somehow remembered where to go. In Lapis's eyes, it looked like they walked through a wall to find Edward. Sure enough, he was there, as a lifeless skeleton.
He sprang to life when he saw who greeted them.
"Robert?" he asked, in his icy, yet somehow warm voice "Why hath thou returned? And who be' eth the fair maiden who accompany thee?"
"Hey, Edward. This is Lapis, my best friend," he said.
"Ah, I see," Edward said. "What dost thou seeketh?"
"I want to know how my sword was cursed," said Robert. Edward turned solemn.
"The Darkness, it was too much for me to continue fighting...and it possessed thine blade. A thousand apologies to thee," he said.
Robert looked to the vines that once held his blade. As he stepped closer to it, the vines retracted. Instead of stopping at the pedestal that held his blade, he walked closer to the wall.
"What art thou doing?" Edward asked.
"I think..." Robert said, as he ripped a vine out of the wall. It revealed what appeared to be some dark plant. It squealed and squirmed as it dissipated in Robert's hand. The rest of the vines retracted into the wall, leaving holes.
"Well, that takes care of that," Robert said.
Lapis peeked through one of them. "Actually, they're not dying, they're escaping!" she exclaimed. "Here, let me-"
"No, it will only strengthen the plant," said Edward.
Robert, with no options, tried to contact Arya.
"Hey, there's a dark plant, Where's it headed?" He said.
"Robert? Are you alright?" Lapis asked.
"Yeah, my sister's a psychic," he said.
"I see it! It's headed for...a weird-looking barn! It's gonna take some green fetus machine." Arya explained.
"We gotta head back to the barn," Robert said, as he took Lapis and made it back to the beach house.
When they returned, the dark plant was already rooting itself around the machine.
Bismuth made it back. "I heard the news! They're coming as fast as they can!" she exclaimed. "Here, take this!" She hands him a replacement sword. It looked nowhere near as cool as his original sword, but it looked sturdy enough to hold its own in a great battle.
Robert tried hacking at the plant, but it just regrew behind it. The plant got inside the machine and corrupted the inner workings. All Robert could do was watch as the plant took possession of the form, and ended with the machine exploding.
When the smoke cleared, there was a humanlike creature that got up and grinned wider than any human ever could, and opened its silvery-blue, catlike eyes.
"Looks like the Light still shines," it said in a scratchy voice that sounded like a mix between Robert's and Gollum's.
To be continued...
Author's Note: We're back! I will try to update as often as I can. Sorry about being on hiatus for a month and a half, I've been trying to come up where to go from the previous chapter, as well as find a way to introduce my latest OC.
QUESTION OF THE CHAPTER: If ANY Steven Universe character (besides Garnet, obviously) could appear in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, who would YOU want it to be?
