Chapter Twenty Four- If I'm
If only you can hear me, shout your name.
Roy's nose pounded, and the taste of blood filled his mouth as he wiped his lips on the back of his hand. The wind stung his skin and his knuckles turned white as he death gripped the side of the car, ice turning the tips of his slender fingers as red as the blood staining his cracked lips.
"Hello?" Roy called, hoping someone in the house at the end of the street with the light on would somehow hear him. He didn't know how loud his voice was over the ringing of his ears. It could've been barely a whisper.
I'm so fucking useless. If she dies out here it's because of me.
"I can't...I can't do this."
You have to.
Roy looked down at his feet, anxiety rising in his chest.
"I'm going to fall."
You're not going to fall.
Roy recalled how persistent Dahlia had been in his parents' old farmhouse, and assured him to have a little faith. She was so sure of herself and confident in Roy, and looked straight into his eyes before he left on the first train that morning. The last time he saw her, they stood eye to eye. He never saw her again.
She was so fucking beautiful.
She ended up bloody and cold and broken and alone in a car just like his wife was at this very moment.
Roy shook his head. If he was crying, tears froze to his face.
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you," he whispered to a ghost as he began to drag himself through the coldest winter night.
I'm running out of time.
His legs would collapse beneath him each time he didn't cling to whatever stationary object available at that passing moment.
What if no one is home? What if this is for nothing? What if I don't make it? What if she dies alone? We could have died together. I can't go back now. She cannot die alone.
Closer, closer.
Roy suddenly felt a firm grasp around his torso.
"You piece of cock."
Roy sighed in relief and wrapped his arms around MacKenzie. He squeezed her tightly, oh so tightly, and suddenly didn't feel as cold.
"Oh, baby," he breathed.
"Who do you think you are, just walking away like that? I open my eyes and there's your bitch ass halfway down the street."
"Jesus Christ I thought I was going to lose you."
"I was going to say something but...nevermind. I...fixed your wheelchair. Don't ever try to go off by yourself again."
As sure as MacKenzie sounded, she still slurred her words and couldn't exactly make eye contact with Roy. Blood was crusted on her forehead and caked in her blonde hair.
"We gotta get you to a hospital," Roy said quietly. "It's freezing out here. You were unconscious for awhile, MacKenzie."
Without hesitation she sat back on Roy's lap. Her delicate frame shivered violently under Roy's jacket.
"Don't fall asleep," Roy whispered. "The light's on, see? We'll knock and get you some help."
"How many times have you broken your nose?"
"That's fair."
Thank you.
