Chapter Ten- Lucky Ones

"I need a bad idea."

"Well, alright."

Roy normally hated the seasons. He also hated the humid hell that was Los Angeles, but he hated the seasons even more. He could only find solace in the rain, where the rest of the world was quiet but the downpour.

He knew it would grow cold soon.

Roy was also rather bad at controlling his impulses. Very evident due to past last minute and spur of the moment decisions. It could have been MacKenzie's desire to find a bad idea, or the change of seasons, or the fact that Roy was even more miserable living in a guest room than living in Los Angeles, but his impulses took over once more.

I need a bad idea.

Well, alright.

MacKenzie didn't protest. She was just as unhappy, and Roy's goal was to change that. Even after the disappointed remarks from MacKenzie's aunts as to why their precious niece was leaving so soon. She smiled. A kiss from Sparrow and an awkward embrace from Timothy sealed their impulse.

Roy always felt he was running from something. He had a habit of packing up and leaving places. First Chickasha, then LA, then Langdon.

"What's gonna be next," he mumbled to himself, hands on the steering wheel.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Nothing.

YOU CAN'T RUN FOREVER, ROY WALKER.

Still, the rain poured once more, and they drove on.

"I know you didn't sleep with Helena."

"Yeah?"

"I know she hit on you, I know you both took something."

"I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

"Because you're so sad."

"You're not gonna ask how we perfectly manage to find out she was a housekeeper?"

"The slutty maid outfit gave it away. Who goes out in uniform?"

They both chuckled. It seemed forced.

"Mm...yeah. I guess. And I guess it was perfect coincidence she was falling in love with you."

Roy slammed on the breaks unexpectedly. "She wasn't...she said I looked like her ex."

"Oh I know. She saw us come in together and approached me. Do you know this guy? He reminds me of my ex. Me going have you come from work? Her going I certainly have."

"Also got super high, Kenz. You forgot about that."

"Didn't forget. Definitely noticed. It's bad enough you think you can walk when you're blackout drunk."

"What"

"What"

There's a lot of things you don't tell me. I know it.

"Tell me something."

"You ran two red lights."

"No, tell me something about you. Tell me things. I wanna know."

"Like..."

"You moved to LA with your half sister and father because of his soda fountain business. You became a nurse. You grew up in just about as much of a shitty town as I did..." he paused. "You had a brother."

"I sure did."

"So what else. What else am I missin' about you."

"I went to a one room schoolhouse growing up."

"You what? Gosh, that's worse than Chickasha."

"Okay I still can't believe that's a real place," MacKenzie giggled.

"It sure is."

"There's six radio stations broadcasted here. When I was a teenager me and Alice would come home from school and do our homework in front of the radio."

Roy smiled. "That's a nice memory."

"I didn't see a film till I was 21."

"Oh wow."

"I guess that's why I was so excited when I found out you were in on the flickers."

In on the flickers. Okay.

"Films don't flicker much. Don't know why they call 'em flickers."

"Yeah they do! It's like the pictures are moving, flickering."

"They sure are moving pictures." Roy put his hand on hers.

"We should watch one together sometime."

"We should."

And Roy found his heart sinking, thinking about the film reel Sinclair had given him before running from Los Angeles, still at the bottom of his suitcase. Somehow MacKenzie failed to notice it.

We should watch one together sometime.

Maybe?
