Enigma
We rode back to my building in silence and hugged before I went inside, the apartment empty since Faye was spending the night with Lee. I journaled about the conflicting messages I received from him before reminding myself to slow down and keep my hopes at bay. It'd only been two days after all.
I made my bed and ran through a quick shower before climbing under a fluffy blanket, talking to my dad for a few minutes before drifting to sleep. When I woke it was to a stream of chattering from the apartment, multiple voices and laughter echoing from down the hallway.
After stopping by the bathroom to freshen up I headed down the hall, my eyes widening when I saw Faye and Lee in the kitchen, Yoongi turning to look at me from where he leaned against the counter.
"Good morning!" Faye chimed.
"Well afternoon." Yoongi corrected with a chuckle.
Though I was curious as to why he was there I avoided asking, stepping into the kitchen and grabbing a mug to pour my first dose of caffeine for the day. "Hi, what are we talking about?" I settled against the counter across from Yoongi.
"Yoongi was just asking what you might be up to today." Faye piped up, Yoongi shooting her a look that indicated she should have lied.
He cleared his throat. "I did say I wanted to see you again." He shrugged nonchalantly.
"I didn't realize you meant so soon." I giggled into my drink, watching as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, seeming a little uncomfortable. I noticed that he picked at his bottom lip, pulling at it until I spoke again. "I just have a photo shoot scheduled later, right before sunset."
Yoongi's phone started ringing and he pulled it from his pocket, excusing himself for a second to take the call. Faye and Lee laughed quietly when the door closed behind him.
"I've never seen him so nervous." Faye smiled as she bent over the counter.
I shook my head. "He's so confusing."
Faye rinsed her mug, setting it in the sink. "Maybe but at least he's got the whole oulmatesay ingthay going for him." She spoke in Pig Latin so that only I would understand. Lee spent the next minute trying to piece together what she meant, Faye giggling and pulling him by the hand toward the door as they headed out for their own date.
Yoongi rejoined me in the kitchen a second after they were gone, his confidence having returned in the time he was away. "So a photo shoot, care if I tag along?" He asked, parking himself on the couch.
"Sure but we have like five hours before that." I replied, finishing up my drink and washing the couple of dishes that'd been left in the sink.
He stood, pulling his keys from his pocket. "Good then that'll give us just enough time to eat, watch a movie, and for you to get ready. I'll be back with lunch." He sped from the apartment.
He left so quickly that I half expected that he wouldn't return, spending the next thirty minutes brushing my bushy hair into a ponytail and folding the load of clothes I'd forgotten in the dryer. By the time I'd matched the last pair of socks the door was opening again, the sound of bags being set on the counter before Yoongi peeked his head down the hallway where I stood at our washing station.
"I'm just finishing up." I called, listening to him ruffle through bags. By the time I dropped my clothes off in my room and joined him in the kitchen he'd spread out a tray of fries and sandwiches on the bar. We shared them all while he updated me on a few of the performances he booked for the coming month.
We put on Pulp Fiction after, one of his favorite movies and a beloved one of mine, and I laughed as he recited most of the lines, pulling me so that we were snuggled against each other with his arm hanging around my shoulders. I giggled to myself as I watched him nod off in the second half of the movie, leaning against his shoulder for a little extra sleep when the credits started to roll.
The sound of the door opening woke me an hour later, Yoongi stirring as Faye's voice projected through the room. He stretched his arms into the air, all of his limbs pulling away from each other as he yawned.
He never opened his eyes, letting his head drop to the side again as Faye held a finger up to her lips to silence herself, tiptoeing to her bedroom with her phone at her ear.
I ventured down the hall to get dressed, having less time to prepare for my photo shoot. I slipped into a simple sweater and jeans, Faye joining me in the bathroom while I brushed my hair again, tucking away the few strands that were poking out after our nap.
"He likes you." She commented, putting the lid down on the toilet before sitting down.
I shrugged. "Every time I think he does he starts to act weird."
She chuckled but kept her voice low in case he was awake. "If he's spending this much time with you already he likes you." She was so sure and maybe I should have been too. I trusted that the soulmate connection was real, he just seemed to be fighting it.
It only took a few minutes for me to get ready and I moved to my room to gather my equipment, slinging the bags I needed over my shoulders.
"Let me take some of those." I jumped at the sound of Yoongi's voice, turning to find him leaning in my doorway with a hand held out. I passed him two of the bags and took a minute to switch some items from my purse to a crossbody bag, the two of us heading out the door just in time to get to the park.
"Ready to be my assistant for today?" I asked as we stopped at the bench where I was planning to meet my client.
He looked down at the lens I had him hold on to while I pulled out my camera, taking a minute to load my memory card.
"Just tell me what to do boss." He smiled up at me. "Is there anything I should know about the client?"
"Of course, we're doing a branding shoot for her business. She does walk and talk therapy, so it should be pretty simple. I'm thinking we'll be out of here in under an hour." I replied, the sound of heels clicking against the pavement catching my attention.
Erica seemed to be in a rush, apologizing for her few minutes of lateness when she approached though I assured her it wasn't an issue. She lit up when I stepped away from the bench, bringing Yoongi into view, a look of recognition on his face as he stood.
"Yoongi!" She exclaimed, both of them smiling as they embraced. "What on earth are you doing here?" She questioned. Despite never seeing myself as the jealous type, a pang of ire sprung up when I saw the way her hands stretched across his shoulders and heard the smack of her lips against his cheek.
"It's good to see you. I'm just helping out a friend." He held her at arm's length when they pulled away, his words poking at me like a surprise tack.
I cleared my throat, interrupting before they could continue their interaction. "So we'll start with a few poses with you sitting on the bench and I'll get some general headshots. We can do some right under this structure and a few with you walking. Of course if you have more ideas for certain poses then we'll also incorporate those, but I'll do a bit of coaching too. Does that sound good?" I took a few steps back, finding my position as they dropped their hold of one another, Yoongi moving to stand next to me while she took a seat on the bench.
Seeing them together was ruining my mood but I tried to push it away, needing to remain professional. I took a few test shots before we began, snapping pictures and giving her compliments that were genuine, unable to deny the incredible beauty that came through just as much on camera as it did in person.
It was hard to ignore the moments when he took it upon himself to push stray pieces of hair into place after a harsh gust of wind or do something behind me that made her laugh, creating an attractive picture but building on my suspicion about their relationship.
I busied myself with packing my equipment away while they said goodbye to each other, catching a tidbit of their conversation as she requested an updated phone number from him.
When we were in his car and on the way back to my apartment he wasted no time speaking up. "That was fun. I'll probably be in the studio for most of the night, but maybe we can see each other tomorrow. What do you have planned?"
"I work a lot for the rest of the week. Maybe I'll see you this weekend sometime." I rubbed at my temple away from his view. He was a complete enigma, removed in one moment and pressed to spend time with me in the next.
I felt his eyes on me for a second but wouldn't look at him, battling with knowing that he was my soulmate, recognizing that we'd only known each other for three days, and agonizing over his behavior and connection to Erica, two things I didn't see myself as having a right to ask about.
