Top 5 Fantasy character troops that are overused.
Hello everyone, I am _sakshiimishra_ , with another article of writing advice for you guys.
If you are a new writer or are a reader who is thinking about writing a fantasy novel, then here I am to give you some advice on 5 overused fantasy character troops that if possible you should avoid.
Note:- Please remember this article is research based but research from my perspective. So some of you would not agree with this and i would totally understand and accept your opinion. This is not written specifically to offend anyone.
No.1.
The Chosen One:- Yes, this troop is so overused that most of the readers and publishing agencies are fed up with it. These are the characters, if female, then are most protected, everyone around them is dying and they are the only one who can save the world. And let's be honest this is actually very overused.
This character has a specific destiny to fulfill and an evil character to fight. This troop was new when it was used in harry potter and lord of the rings. But then other authors followed the race and quickly adapted to it.
Some of the examples are Tris's character from Divergent, Katness from Hunger Games the 4 kids from Narnia and many many more and now its high time to leave this troop and move on.
No.2.
Emotionally Unavailable Hero:- Yes, this one too. Many teens nowadays are writing books about a cold hearted killer or hero or boss or some man who has gone through a lot, has a bitter past, which he cant move on from and hence is cunning and does not trust anyone... and lets be honest don't you think this is overused a lot.
From Mr.Ambrose in storm and silence to Tobias in Divergent, I have seen them all.
If you are searching for a good character troop for your hero, then let him be emotional, caring, sweet and at the same time smart, cunning and muscline.
The abusive, cunning, angry, manipulative, ladies man shouldn't be an idol type. Let's change it.
No.3.
Evil Lord:- These are mostly seen with the chosen one troop. The evil lord whose sole purpose is to have darkness and his rule all over the world. With no back stories, no clear motive, this character is evil just to show how good sweet and pure our chosen one protagonist is.
This evil lord character was seen in lord of the rings, narnia, harry potter and the list goes one.
As the world is advancing so are the people in it, that means readers are advancing too, readers nowadays prefer grey antagonists with sad past who have purpose and a motive for all their evil doing. A character who is good for some but evil for our protagonist, a character who is just mean rude and a bully because his past troubles him. Everyone loves this character not the evil lords who are evil just for the sake of being evil.
No.4.
Orphaned Protagonist:- yes yes, i know, many of you are using this and think its cool. And I agree, it's cool and easy to handle. As no parents means the protagonist could go on a weird and deathly adventure as there is no one to ask permission from, but... but... but... let's be honest, will you in real life want to live without your parents? I hope not.
I know most fantasy are FANTASY, but... fantasy also needs to have its fair share of reality and truth in it. Don't kill off the guardian figure just to show your protagonist's character development.
Many books used this troop, for example; harry potter, percy jackson, and many more.
Let the parents and guardian live happily.
No.5.
Damsel In Distress:- These are the characters mostly female which i hate a lot. These types of characters are mostly seen with the No.2. Emotionally Available Hero, who gets abused and manipulated from different people and heroes too.
These females always need someone to help, they show no character development and sometimes they have no character at all, just a simple plain goody two shoes.
Okay now let me clarify, if your protagonist is a damsel in distress but learns magic or something and becomes a badass little by little then they do not come into this category and if you female is a badass character but needs help from the hero sometimes then its fine too they are different character troop.
The damsel in distress examples are bella swan from twilight and lucy from narnia.
The damsel in distress turned badass examples are Ginny Weasley from Harry Potter and Triss from divergent.
The badass who needs help sometimes are hermione from harry potter and katniss from hunger games
Hope you guys liked it. If you did then don't forget to like and share it to your writer friends.
And tell me if you need part 2 of 5 overused fantasy character troops and also comment below on which topic you want me to write next.
Thank you for reading!
