Ross #2
Teenagers. That's what we are in the eyes of those who aren't.
Annoying, obnoxious, teenagers.
And so when I got kicked out of some preppy private school I didn't even want to go to in the first place, of course my rebound school was: Miami prep.
"Why the glum face honey?" Gracie purrs next to me, her thick seductive cowgirl accent dripped off each word like honey. I met her about a week into the new year at the private school I mentioned. Haven't been able to shake her since.
"What are you even doing at this school?" I groan staring straight down the hall we're heading down.
"Well because, I told the principle if she wanted to kick you out then i'd leave too."
"And what made you think she'd care?" I chuckle giving her a quick side glance.
"Well.." She hesitated. "My daddy donates the most money to that dumb school."
I can't help but laugh. Gracie might be some rich, seductive, country girl slob, but she's a pretty decent friend at times. "Thanks for sticking up for me." She gives me a look as in did Ross just apologise to me?? And I continue.
"For sticking up for me. Back at the school. You seem to be the only who believes I didn't vandalise the principles car."
"Well sugar plum, my daddy's always taught me to believe with my eyes, not ears."
A part of me, since the day we met, has always wondered if the slutty cowgirl thing she had going on was a phase or an act; because other than that, she had a lot going for her.
"What did you do.." I sigh stopping in my tracks. Her high boots clip and clap a few steps ahead before stopping.
She turns her head around, her red auburn hair swings to one side of her shoulder slightly hypnotising me. "What makes you think I had anything to do with it?"
"Because.." I begin and fold my arms against my chest. Before continuing I plaster the look on my face. You know, the look every mother has learnt to perfect. "This isn't the first time we've met. I'm not so blind and oblivious to your tricks Gracie."
With a roll of her eyes she's leans her head back, her red hair falls against her back, while her arms drop to her sides. Stomping one foot she groans. "Fine.!! I .. May or may not have vandalised the principals car."
"Gracie!!!" Now I had to groan. A deep part of me secretly thanked her for screwing the principle just to stay with me. She doesn't know about Laura or my siblings or anything about me really, I never gave her the chance to ask; and thankfully
she never did.
"Whatever." I say. And then somehow find myself forcing a smile on my face. Taking a few steps towards her, I wrap an arm around her shoulders and squeeze them tight. "C'mon, let's go find the principles office. Gotta get ourselves signed into the system."
She nods, loose strands of her hair tickle my hand until I have to deliberately grab her hair and move it away to keep from laughing.
"What?" She chuckles, turns her head to face me and her hair sweeps my cheek in one quick motion.
That causes another set of giggles.
"What.." She questions again, this time cracking a smile.
I shake my head slightly, my blonde locks sweeping over my eyes. They definitely grew a lot over the summer. I should probably get it cut.
"Umm Ross." Gracie whispers, taps my shoulder, then looks directly ahead.
I guess giggle time is over.
"What is it?" I ask with still a little giggle left.
You know that moment in a movie when the audience all yells don't go in there! The monsters in there! It's so obvious!
........
Well, this was one of those, it's so obviously going to be Laura moments, that I did not understand until , a few seconds after.
"That girl over there," Gracie says stilling eyeing the girl. "Do you know her? Because.. She sure is looking at you like she does."
Feeling slightly creeped out, I look ahead only to be completely caught off guard. I almost forgot she went to this school...
"Um..." I begin, not exactly sure of what to say. The giggles... Yeah, definitely gone.
"Well.." She repeats, this time with an edge in her tone. "Do you know the girl or not? Cause' I sure as hell want to walk over there and crack some manners into her. That's just creepy, staring at people with those big, creepy brown eyes and not to mention her tiny tiny-"
"That's enough!" I snap then step back surprised. "S..sorry. I didn't mean to."
Our eyes lock.
By "our" I mean the girl and I. I'm sure of it. She quickly looks away after a few seconds and we're at quite a distance to really be sure, but i'm sure our eyes locked. I just know it.
"Ross.." Gracie says quietly tugging on my sleeve. "Who is she...?"
I don't speak. My mouths dry. I need water! Where's water when you need it? Finally, after a few moments of continuous staring I croak with a dry taste in my mouth, "her name is Laura Marano."
