Chapter 7 - Ariadne Maciel
A small yawn escapes your mouth as you wriggle your butt in the passenger seat, making yourself more comfortable in it. You take a glance to your left, watching Jimin purse his lips as he concentrates on the road in front of him.
Hoseok is lying in the back seat, grunting in pain from time to time when he accidentally shifts his leg. Calming music is playing in the car, making you even drowsier than you already are.
Hm, look at them getting all comfortable in their seats, maybe I should stir them up a bit.
"Don't you try anything stupid now Jimin, alright?" You shoot him with a glare filled with fury, making him raise his eyebrows in surprise.
"Jesus Christ Ari, you're too creepy sometimes. Alright, alright." A very exaggerated sigh leaves Jimin's throat, causing the corner of your mouth to pull up in an amused smirk.
He straightens his back as he starts parking the car, turning the steering wheel around with ease. Reversing in the parking spot, his tongue slightly pokes out of his mouth as he carefully watches the mirrors, making sure to leave enough space for Hoseok to be able to get out of the car.
You tilt your head down and glide your tongue over your bottom lip, vividly remembering the moment in the storage room with Taehyung. Why did he do that all of a sudden?
He seemed like a very rational and exceptionally scary person at first, it looks like you were wrong about that. You're definitely right about him being terrifying though.
That dark aura you saw in the window is also raising many suspicions in your mind. What the fuck is going on with him? You feel as if your head is going to explode.
You jolt up in your seat when Jimin's hand pats your shoulder, his eyes observing you curiously. "Hey, what's wrong? Are you alright?" His soft voice echoes in your mind, a feeling of relief washing over you as he speaks.
"Let's get Hoseok out of the car." Brushing away the pain, you smile gently at Jimin, not being able to meet his gaze and open the door, only to feel his hand rest on your thigh lightly.
"Hey, Ariadne. Look at me."
You squeeze your eyes shut before you take a deep breath and face Jimin once again, this time looking straight at his sympathetic chocolate orbs. He's scanning every single movement of yours, searching for any sign of distress.
God, I have to talk to her when we get Hobi inside. She's not doing well, something happened and she obviously doesn't dare to tell me what. That pisses me off so much! You can trust me, you dumb idiot!
You can't keep a straight face when you hear him, your lips parting as you realise that he's right. With this behaviour of yours, you'll push him away and that's the last thing you want to do right now.
"Can we talk about it later? I promise I'll tell you everything." Your voice is barely above a whisper since you don't want to upset Hoseok, he's already wretched because of his injured knee.
Now that's more like it! Let's get moving before Hobi hyung starts screaming his lungs out. He isn't the type to wait around too much.
Jimin scrunches his nose and smiles widely, slapping your thigh lightly and swiftly exiting the car. You follow his actions before the two of you help Hoseok get out of the back seat carefully, letting him rest his weight on both of you as you walk him into his home.
Hoseok insists that you and Jimin stay longer, but you really can't wait to get back home and rest for a while. Today was much more eventful than you could've ever imagined.
Constantly tugging on Jimin's sleeve you let him know that the three of you, or even the whole of Jimin's group, will all hang out together some other time. You want to get home as soon as possible and clear the chaos in your head.
Throughout the ride you remain relatively quiet, humming along to the songs on the radio and observing the busy streets you're passing by. Relaxing completely in the comfortable seat, you let your mind wander about.
As you get to the crossroads, Jimin brings the car to a stop, you feeling his eyes focusing on your slumped body. His stare on you is very intense, but not in an uncomfortable way.
Still, your eyes remain anchored on the crossing as you can't bring yourself to return the gaze, but you wish you did because what you notice next raises the fine hairs on the back of your neck.
In the middle of the crossing, a man is standing with his hands buried deep inside the pockets of his coat, staring right at you as if you're some type of prey to him.
Everything he's wearing is jet black, from the beret resting on his head and the turtleneck tightly hugging his body to the casual slim jeans and the long coat reaching below his knees, elongating his already tall figure.
The black mask is covering his face, but his eyes remain exposed to you. Lifeless and disturbingly dark, his onyx-coloured orbs are penetrating through you and causing goosebumps to form on your skin.
A long silver earring is adorning his left earlobe and you feel the familiar knot tying in the pit of your stomach once again. You can imagine the wicked smile hiding behind that mask as you break out in a cold sweat.
You're roughly digging your fingers into your thigh, completely unaware of the pain as your gaze is fixated on him, tracing his every move.
It's there again, that dark aura. Swirling around him in the same way a cat rubs around the legs of a human it adores. What terrifies you the most is that it looks alive, as if it's another entity connected to him.
No one around him is aware of his existence, some are even passing straight through him. Is he there or is your mind just toying with you once again?
He must be standing on that fucking crossing, the fear coursing through your veins feels too real to be a simple fruit of your imagination. There's no doubt about it, he's there.
Every single muscle in your body is screaming at you to scramble out of the car and run away as fast as you possibly can. You don't move an inch though, being held captive by his penetrating glare.
His hooded eyes are filled with the lust for blood. Your blood.
You scream out in terror and duck under the dashboard, covering your head with your trembling hands when you notice Taehyung's dark aura lunging towards the car at inhuman speed.
"Ariadne! What the fuck is wrong with you? Snap out of it!" Jimin grabs your arm roughly and pulls you back up, a bewildered expression written all over his face.
You flinch from the pain and Jimin realises he's hurting you, loosening up the grip on your arm but still not letting go of you. Breathing in slowly, he watches as you frantically look around you, realising Taehyung is gone.
Furthermore, Jimin and you are in front of your shared home.
Remaining silent as your breathing is still uneven and your heart is slamming against your chest, you get Jimin's hand away from your arm and exit the car, going straight to your flat.
Jimin is following you close behind, respecting your decision to be quiet which you sincerely appreciate. You don't even know if you have the energy to speak right now.
Punching in the code, the doors open to you and you quickly take off your shoes, heading straight to the kitchen and sitting at one of the bar stools at the island.
"Jimin, can you please make us some tea?" Your voice is hoarse, every word feeling like extremely sharp knives are being stabbed in your throat. You rub your neck lightly, trying to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling.
Jimin nods before turning his back to you. You follow the movement of the prominent muscles that are rippling underneath the shirt he's wearing, steadying your breathing as your eyes move up to the soft nape of his neck before they stop at his unruly hair.
The light strands are sticking out in every way possible, making you realise he's ruffled it before entering the apartment. He's anxious, you can see it in the way his shoulders are tensing up.
He's ready to pounce at the slightest glimpse of danger, anticipating it at any moment.
"Speak, I don't have much patience left." Your eyes widen slightly at his stern voice, making you bite down on your lip and stare at the mug in front of you.
The steam from the tea is filling up your nostrils, calming down your tense nerves. You place your hands around the mug, enjoying the warmth emitting from it and shift your attention to Jimin.
He's sitting across from you, his expression completely blank and unwavering. You're not used to seeing him like this, so the room quickly fills with tension, making you tap your fingers on the mug from nervousness.
Sighing deeply, you finally gain enough courage to start speaking. "I have some things that are bothering me and that I haven't told you yet. I don't know if telling them to you is the right decision to do, but I don't seem to have a choice now, do I?"
Jimin abruptly shakes his head, his long earring glistening in the light shining from the drop lights above you.
Come on, I'm not an idiot. Something is wrong. Very wrong. Jesus, what could she possibly be hiding from me?
"This hospital is completely different than any other hospitals I've ever been to. Before I came here, only one thing was important - my skills. No one cared about who I am, they only cared that I give each patient the best treatment possible."
A chuckle escapes your throat when you remember Dr Kim's words in the storage room. He's the law, huh?
"Now, this hospital cares about one doctor and one doctor only. His name is Kim Taehyung and apparently, he's the law of the hospital. That's fucking insane!" You run your tongue over your teeth, the anger making your blood boil.
Taking a sip of the tea, you take a glance in Jimin's direction. "Let me take a guess, that cocky bastard in the ER?" He scoffs angrily after asking you, causing a smile to appear on your lips.
"There's something creepy about him, he was looking at you in a way I couldn't quite understand. Even though he had a genuine smile plastered on his face, his eyes were telling me a completely different story, Ari." Jimin places his hand over his lips, deep in thought.
I didn't like the way that scary idiot was staring at her. It looked like he could snap her in half in a split second.
"It's as if he wanted to kill me," You barely whisper, making Jimin click with his fingers and look at you happily.
"Exactly! That's what I was thinking! Oh, that's a bit morbid now that I put some thought into it, no offence."
"None is taken. So, we both agree that there's something seriously off with Dr Kim, I'm glad we're on the same page about that. Now, this doesn't mean I might not lose you after this conversation ends."
Goddammit, why can't you see the future now? It'd be so much more convenient for you, you wouldn't have to worry about this at all! Jesus Christ, this is pissing you off so much.
Taking another sip of the tea, you observe the hot steaming liquid afterwards, mesmerised by it peacefully swirling in the mug. "I can read your mind." You hear Jimin choking on his tea and in the corner of your eye you notice him wiping his mouth with his hand.
"What?! That's why you knew the passcode to my door! Son of a bitch, why didn't you tell me earlier? You know, I had my doubts but I brushed them away simply because people who can read other people's minds just don't fucking exist."
His eyes are trained on you, literally burning the skin of your temple, but you can't bring yourself to face him. Instead, you tilt your head down and rest your elbows on the island, covering your face in frustration.
"Jimin, how the hell can I just come up to you and tell you that I'm able to do this? And as you can see, people can read other people's minds. It's just that not many of us can actually do it."
You feel your shoulders relax as his hand rests on your back, rubbing gentle circles with his short fingers to calm you down. He's probably just acting nice, he'll make you get the hell out of his home in less than a minute.
Hey, nod if you can hear me. Woah, shit! I thought you were joking at first, but I guess you're dead serious by the expression on your face. Scary.
He shudders when you snap your head towards him, a string of inaudible curses leaving your throat. "Why would I lie about it? It would just make me seem like a lunatic."
Who says you aren't one already? Okay, I'll seriously stop now, I promise.
Jimin presses his palms together in a pleading movement, his rings blinding you for a moment. God, he has so many of them, but to be honest, they suit him well.
Listen, I'm totally fine with you being able to read my mind. As I've told you already, I had that weird feeling that there was something fishy about you. I also don't have anything to be embarrassed about.
"Not even that time in front of the airport?" You laugh out when his cheeks turn crimson red as he remembers the exact moment you're referring to.
You're right, I absolutely do have something to be embarrassed about, but that's beside the point! I'm honestly okay with it, it's not like you can control it.
"Who says I can't? Wait, stop thinking for a moment. Since you already know everything now, I might as well point out the largest problem I face when I'm around Taehyung." Placing your hands behind your head and leaning back, you glance at him mischievously.
How can I stop thinking though? Okay, Jesus. Stop it with that death glare.
"I can't hear his thoughts at all. He's dead silent to me and it's tipping me over the edge because not once in my life has this happened before." Your lips curl up in a defeated smile as you watch Jimin's eyes widen at your expression.
"The best thing is that the universe couldn't choose anyone else but Kim Taehyung and what's even better is the fact that I'm deathly afraid of him. He's a complete enigma for me and it's driving me insane."
You take a long breath before continuing. "To top it all off, I think I'm starting to have hallucinations about him."
"Well, that's a problem now, isn't it?" Jimin's voice breaks as both of you stare at each other, the faint taste of green tea still lingering in your mouth as you analyse Jimin's worried expression.
