Chapter 6 - Ariadne Maciel

"She's fine. We need to keep her hydrated and remove the ventilator, she can breathe on her own. Her reflexes are good as well." Your voice is barely audible as you check the little girl's condition.

Dr Kim's aura is immensely heavy, almost suffocating to you, making you take shallow breaths as your vision becomes shaky. You hold your breath, your lips thinning into a line as you grab the edge of the bed.

Slamming your eyes shut, you swallow slowly as you feel him approaching you from behind and placing his large hand on your waist. Your whole body jerks from his subtle touch as goosebumps form on your skin.

You feel your muscles tense in anticipation as your eyes snap open, frantically wandering around the room. Your skin feels as if it's burning on the spot where his hand is resting while it's squeezing you lightly.

Sinking your teeth into your bottom lip, you snap out of the fearful daze and roll back your shoulders, regaining your composure.

"Follow me." His warm breath fans over the nape of your neck, completely catching you off guard and causing another violent shiver to run through you.

You bring your trembling hand to your ear, tucking a strand of hair behind it and nod lightly, your throat not being able to produce a single sound.

You hear him hum mischievously behind you before he takes a step back, allowing you to release a shaky breath you didn't even realise you were holding.

That fucker. He knows exactly what he's doing, teasing you like this. It's as if he can feel your fear, even long for it, enjoying in every single second of it.

You can't explain this unusual effect he has on you, your mind telling you that there's something wicked with him while your soul, even though it's trembling with fear, wants to see what's hiding behind the mask.

No, you won't let him break you. You'll show him you're not yet another puppet waiting in line for him to play with as he pleases. Remembering your grandmother's words, you feel your breath stabilising.

If he's searching for a fight, well hell, he's going to get one.

With a newly found confidence, you proudly turn around and stare at him. Blinking with feigned innocence, you give him a bright smile and tilt your head to the side.

"Well? Where should I follow you?" You raise your eyebrows in expectation.

His expression darkens, his fine eyebrow rising subtly as his dreadful eyes scan you mercilessly. He looks like he's capable of killing you right then and there. Why doesn't he do it then if he's so annoyed by you?

It's not like you want to be in his presence either. "It's such a paradox, don't you agree? Having murderous intentions while working as a doctor. Why do I have such a weird feeling those intentions are somehow directed to me?"

Before you can reason with your right mind if saying that is absolutely necessary, it's simply too late. You've poked an already extremely furious bear with a giant stick, straight in its eye.

He stays silent, his fine features not showing a single reaction towards your bold statement. His cold glare stays focused on you as he cocks his head to the side and raises an eyebrow ever so slightly, gesturing you to the door.

You feel your blood run cold. He is more frightening than ever, being this silent and non-responsive.

His breathing is stable, his broad chest rising up and down behind his crossed arms. His sharp jaw is clenched painfully tight while his naturally full upper lip twitches slightly, being the only indicator that he's not a statue towering in front of you.

That's his warning to you, you need to move.

With a slight and very awkward bow, you excuse yourself and head to the door, thankfully not feeling his presence behind you. He's probably calming down his agitated nerves before he can face you once again.

You hear the doors behind you sliding open, so you turn around and glance at Dr Kim. "Where are we-" An uncontrollable gasp leaves your throat as Dr Kim grabs you without any word.

His long fingers are digging deep into the skin of your upper arm as he's dragging you down the hallway, not sparing you a single glance. You take a look at the windows to your right, noticing how the sun is almost completely set now, a few of the stars already showing on the clear sky.

Dr Kim abruptly stops, making you collide with his tense back. He doesn't acknowledge you bumping into him, opening the door to a room with very dim lighting instead. Before you can protest, he's already pulling you inside.

A painful moan escapes your throat when he slams you against the shelves packed with medical supplies, his fingers tightly wrapped around your wrists, keeping them in place on both sides of your head.

A barely audible click indicates that the door is closed, your ragged breathing being the only sound disturbing the silence in the darkened room. Dr Kim leans closer to you, evening out your height.

The dim light in the room brings out the sharpness in his features, allowing you to detect the two tiny beauty marks, one on his nose and one on his lower lip. You couldn't see them during the surgery because of the mask he was wearing.

Something glistening on the left side of his face attracts your attention, making you realise he has a single long earring adorning his earlobe. He wasn't wearing it before, you'd notice it if he did.

Your eyes wander to his intent and unwavering gaze, causing a low growl to escape his throat before the corner of his faint peach lip tugs upwards, creating a sinister smirk that makes your heart hammer against your chest.

The fresh scent of his skin hits your nose, mixed with the harsh smell of sterilised bandages, gauzes and other various types of cleansers. You feel yourself getting a bit lightheaded, your eyelids slowly hooding over your eyes.

A click of his tongue snaps you back to reality. "Already feeling comfortable enough with me to fall asleep?" His deep voice is barely above a whisper, a gleam of deviltry showing in his dark eyes.

Your lips part and your brows knit together in a frown before you snap your head back and hit the shelves behind you in the process when he swiftly shushes you, completely catching you off guard.

"Shut your pretty little mouth and listen," He grits through his teeth harshly, his deep voice gradually getting quieter as he speaks. "I don't care what they taught you in other hospitals, but you're under me now. I'm the law."

You breathe in sharply and glance sideways, avoiding him as he inches closer to you, his breath casually fanning over the sensitive skin of your neck. In the corner of your eye, you detect minimal movement on the window behind Dr Kim.

The room you two are in is on the third floor, maybe it's simply a bird. Upon inspecting it further, you notice that it's too liquidy to be a bird. The strange and dark form is surrounding Dr Kim, as if it's an aura of some kind, latching on to him.

Maybe even emitting from him.

"Do you think I'll simply let you walk away after everything you've done, acting so arrogant and mighty as if you own everything in here? Doctor, do you think you are some kind of lifesaver?" The words roll off of his tongue, interrupting your train of thoughts.

Ignoring the strange aura in the window reflection, you face Dr Kim, noticing that you can't see anything surrounding him and coming to a conclusion that you're surely just hallucinating.

Only a couple of centimetres are separating you and him as you feel his warm breath on your skin, the devilish smirk never leaving his lips as his dark eyes stare fixedly at you.

"Yes, I'm a doctor, what else am I supposed to do? Let people die?" You snarl at him, suddenly gasping when you feel his knee between your legs, pushing them further apart as he leans even closer to you.

A genuine laugh escapes his mouth when he glances to the side as if he's thinking what to do with you next. He looks back at you, his expression growing serious. "If they are destined to die, yes."

You hum and glide your tongue over your teeth. "I'm afraid I don't believe in destiny, doctor." Your voice is cold as you tilt your head to the side, watching as he clenches his jaw before he lets go of your left arm, abruptly grabbing your jaw instead.

You unconsciously clasp his forearm as he tilts your head up, cocking his eyebrow while his eyes stay focused on your lips. His hand is abnormally large, making you feel absolutely terrified and helpless underneath him.

"For fuck's sake," He mutters under his breath, his dark pupils dilating as his tongue brushes over your parted lips before he takes your lower lip between his teeth and pulls on it lightly.

You take a sharp breath and start squirming beneath him, pushing him away with all your might when the pager starts beeping in his pocket. "Are you out of your fucking mind?" You shout at him, your hands shaking violently.

You're only able to stare at him with a bewildered look, still unable to comprehend how the hell did he get the idea to do that to you. Placing your hand over your mouth, you feel the familiar, lightly burning feeling.

He's ignoring you completely, concentrating on the little pager in his hand. "It's the ER department. Come on, you're going with me," He adds as if nothing's happened, but you stay glued to the spot, anger seeping out of you.

When he finally shifts his attention to you, you raise your hand and slap him, the sound echoing throughout the small room. "You pig," You spit at him, not being able to control yourself.

He isn't swayed at all by your hand viciously meeting his cheek, which makes you even madder than you already are. Calming down your breathing, you storm out of the room before the fear can consume you once again, hearing him menacingly laugh behind you as he follows you.

"Come on-" He tries to talk but you spin around with your index finger up in the air, almost poking him in the nose.

"Don't you fucking dare!" You roar at him, a string of curses leaving your mouth as you head down to the ER.

When you finally get there after a couple of wrong turns, you angrily bow to the head nurse and let the stethoscope rest over your shoulders as you disinfect your hands. "Where's the patient?" You ask, tracking the nurse's gaze towards one of the beds.

Without any other words, you bow again to the nurse and head to the patient, wanting to get as far away from Taehyung as possible. When you move the curtain to the side, your face instantly lights up.

Jimin is standing on the right side of the bed, another guy who you assume is his friend lying on it while clenching the area around his knee. "Jimin!" You giggle at him, pulling him into a hug and nestling your head in the crook of his neck.

Okay, love birds, you can stop now, I'm in pain over here! God, I shouldn't have said yes to Jimin when he said he wanted to bring me to this hospital.

Jimin runs his hand through your hair and chuckles lightly, you feeling the vibrations from his chest which puts you at ease. He takes a step back and glances at you, placing his small hand at the nape of his neck.

Lifting his shoulders awkwardly, he gestures you to take a look at his friend. "This is Hoseok. We were practising our new choreography when he tried to improvise, resulting in him hurting his knee."

You nod assuringly, placing your hand on Hoseok's shoulder. "I'm sorry we had to meet like this, Hoseok. Can I take a look at it?" You smile at him, widening your eyes when he flashes you a grin brighter than the sun.

"Of course! It hurts a lot though." He laughs out as you get to the other side of the bed so that you can gain better access to his right knee. You put on your gloves out of habit even though you don't need them now.

You gently take a hold of Hoseok's leg, lifting it and noticing some mild swelling. He hisses from the pain and squeezes his eyes shut as you sigh. "It's a meniscal tear. You twisted your knee, am I right?"

Hoseok nods lightly as Jimin places his hands on the edge of the bed, hovering over Hoseok as his eyes glance at you with worry. "Is it serious?" His soft voice wavers a bit, causing a reassuring smile to appear on your lips.

"He'll be fine, the tear is in the red zone. I'll put the knee back in its rightful place and then the nurse will bring you some ice packs to reduce the swelling."

The red zone sounds kind of bad though. God, I hope Hobi will be able to get back to dancing soon, we need him! He's the best dancer in our group!

You watch as Jimin pats Hoseok's shoulder, both of them giving each other meaningful looks. These two don't even need the ability to read each other's minds, they already know what the other one is thinking.

Humming lightly, you skillfully snap Hoseok's knee in place as he's still occupied with reassuring Jimin. He yelps in surprise and grabs on to Jimin's shirt, pouting sadly at you. "Hey! A little bit of a warning would've been completely fine!"

You wink at him teasingly, a light chuckle escaping your lips. "Don't question my methods. Nurse, can you please bring me an ice pack?" You turn around and ask the nurse closest to you.

She bows deeply before running off to get it, leaving you alone with Jimin and Hoseok. You start filling in his health record, seemingly not paying attention to them.

Okay, it's now or never. Jimin, I swear to god, if you don't ask her, I'll give you one of the hardest choreographies to learn in less then a week, I'm not even kidding!

When Hoseok thinks you're not paying attention to them, he smacks Jimin on the chest, violently snapping his head towards you as he's glaring daggers at Jimin. You bite on your lower lip, stifling a laugh.

Oh, Jesus Christ, I'm scared Hobi! What if she flips me off like the last time I tried to be flirty? Goddammit, alright. I can do this, Hobi hyung is here for support.

"Ari, is your shift over? Let's go drop Hobi off and then eat something after. I'm starving." Jimin bites his lower lip in anticipation, you barely holding your laugh in as you sign the document.

God, these two dorks surely know how to make a positive atmosphere.

You glance at Jimin under your lashes, not bothering to lift your head. "Why not? Let me just get in some comfortable clothes while you wait for the ice pack." Without waiting for Jimin's answer, you walk away and head to Dr Kim.

He's leaning on the front desk, his elbow resting casually on it and supporting his head while his left leg is crossed over his right. You pay no attention to him, giving the documents to the nurse on the other side of the desk.

"I'm done for today." You sigh tiredly, rubbing your temples to relax a bit. Dr Kim is quietly humming a song, trying to get you to acknowledge his existence.

His clear and deep voice fills your ears as you recognise the song, not being able to hide a small smile from forming on your lips. Without sparing him a single glance, you clear your throat and turn your back to him, heading out of the ER.
