Chapter 4 - Ariadne Maciel
What a vulgar piece of crap, you think to yourself as you roll your eyes and breathe in before turning around to face the intruder.
When you lock eyes with the man standing at the door, you become completely paralysed as your pulse starts beating in your ears, blocking out all other sounds before goosebumps start forming on your skin.
His chest is rising up and down heavily, his graceful long fingers clutching the door handle with such force that his knuckles are turning white.
A white robe hangs over his broad shoulders, rolled carelessly over the elbows, showing he was in a rush of some kind, as doctors usually are. His baby blue scrub shirt is crooked to the side, revealing his prominent collarbone.
You can see his carotid artery protruding out of the translucent skin on his neck, fiercely pumping the blood through his lean body.
His sharp jawline is clenched tightly and his finely shaped eyebrows are knit closely together as his eyes the colour of deep mahogany threateningly stare at you.
A fresh and uplifting smell of the hand sanitiser fills the office, but under that clean scent, you can sense something else.
The sickening smell of death.
A shaky breath leaves your throat when Dr Park starts speaking to that man, his steady voice calming down the tension building inside you. You give him a glance before you focus on the doctor standing at the door once again, realising something impossible.
You can't hear him. Not a single thought is coming from him and this time you're sure it's not like it was with Jimin where he completely spaced out for a moment.
When you try and focus on him once again, his sharp eyes meet yours.
"How rude." His clear guttural voice echoes through the office, gently flowing in your ears. You hum quietly, wondering if he's aware of the fact that you're trying to read his mind.
Surely that's not the case, you're just imagining things. Although his aura doesn't exactly give off completely human nature, that's for sure. "The only one being rude right now is you." It escapes your throat before you can control it.
Well, the first impression of a normal and polite girl is out the window now. Fucking perfect. It's just so frustrating that you're not able to read him, it's seriously starting to make you go insane.
When you finally find a reason to get out of the office, you grab your bag and get the hell out of there, not looking back even once.
When the doors close behind you, you crouch down as your knees buckle underneath you and cover your face with your shaky hands, breathing deeply to try and even out your heartbeat.
How can he be so intimidating? His whole existence leaves you trembling, making you wonder how will you be able to fight against the fear and manage to work when he's around. Even being in the same room with him is bringing a heavy feeling to your stomach.
He carries something with him that no one around him notices, or doesn't want to. You can feel there's something twisted in his demeanour, but you simply can't put your finger on it.
As a matter of fact, you're not even sure if you want to find out what's so different about him.
And then there's that inability to read his mind. Even scarier was the moment when he glared at you as if he knew what you were trying to do. You run your tongue over your teeth, closing your eyes to get that scene out of your head.
You can do this. Yes, you're scared shitless of Dr Kim Taehyung, but this isn't going to last forever and maybe this is just your paranoia getting the best out of you. Now get up.
With your knees still trembling a bit, you manage to stand up and gracefully run your hand through your hair before you stop in your tracks. You recall the moment of the handshake, but your thoughts are interrupted.
I have to find Dr Kim immediately! I checked the ICU, maybe he's in Dr Park's office! Oh god, please let him be there! The kid needs him! I need him too!
You see the source of these thoughts, a woman surgeon frantically searching around her before she heads towards the dean's office. At that moment, the door behind you opens, revealing Dr Kim who the woman spots immediately as if she's a radar of some kind.
She runs to him and clings onto him like a little monkey, shamelessly touching his muscles and pressing her breasts against his towering frame.
You see how annoyed Dr Kim is by her, especially when he carelessly pushes her away and takes a look at you instead. He has an intense stare, even more so now that you are a bit vigilant in his presence.
"You'll operate and I'll assist, is that clear?" His baritone echoes in your mind as he leaves you with that idiot of a woman.
Yes, he's absolutely gorgeous, but can't she feel that dark aura surrounding him? She turns around when Dr Kim gets out of her sight, extending her hand towards you.
He's intrigued by her, I don't like that. To top it all off, he's already giving her the surgery? What's so special about her? I've been trying to get his attention for years now, yet she's able to do it without even trying!
"Dr Ko Harin. Nice to meet you." She smiles at you, you extending your hand to shake hers as you introduce yourself. "Okay, we don't have much time, doctor. Let me show you where you can unpack your stuff," She says, showing you to follow her.
You do as you're told, observing her with your head tilted to the side. She's acting completely different now that Dr Kim is nowhere to be seen.
God, I wonder what he's doing now. Damn, those long sexy fingers are probably touching that little kid. I'm so annoyed, why doesn't he want me? Have I seriously got nothing to offer? Maybe I'm just a bit shy when I'm around him, I should be more open!
You're wrong, she's being ten times worse now that he's not around. Jesus. "Girl, no. You need to be completely opposite of that and run away from him as fast as you can."
Dr Ko takes a glance at you over her shoulder, eyeing you curiously. "What was that? Nevermind, we're here. Go and change, you need to get to the OR as soon as possible, they've already prepped the little patient for surgery."
You straighten your back and nod, an innocent smile adorning your lips. She won't suspect anything of your rambling, she doesn't have the brains to do so. At least you hope that's the case.
Entering the room, you find a free locker with your name already written on it, placing your essentials inside and quickly changing into the proper attire. When you head out, you notice that Dr Ko is nowhere to be found.
Fucking perfect. Well, time to find the OR by yourself it seems!
Taking a look around, you notice a young male nurse politely speaking with an old woman sitting in the hallway. He surely must know where the OR is.
Oh my fucking god, can someone save me? Jesus, she'll drain all the energy from me. Stay polite, just stay polite. Breathing is also a good thing to do, yeah. It's essential to my well-being.
You head to them with a simple chuckle and place your hand on the nurse's shoulder, startling him a bit. When he sees your white robe, he sighs of relief and places his hand over yours desperately.
"Yes, doctor? How can I help you?" His voice is soft as butter, thankfulness beaming out of him. You give him a wide smile when you see how grateful he is as the old lady continues blabbering nonsense.
"Can you please tell me where the OR is? It's my first day here so I'm still not accustomed." He pats your shoulder when you ask him, urging you to get away from the grandma and politely smiling at her as he continues to push you down the hallway.
"Yes, yes of course! This way doctor!" He exclaims, leading you to a set of stairs with another deep sigh of relief.
When the two of you get away from the old lady, the male nurse takes a curious glance at you, his soft eyes observing your face. "You're the new volunteer doctor operating with Dr Kim on the little patient with internal bleeding, right?"
You lift an eyebrow before you hum, nodding lightly. "News spread here like wildfire. I guess I'll have to perform the exploratory laparotomy on the patient." The nurse nods at your statement, the curious look still not leaving his eyes.
"You know that Dr Kim never assisted anyone in this hospital before? I wonder what made him change his mind." He suddenly stops walking and places his hand on your lower back.
"This is it, you can go in. I'm sure they're waiting for you." Before you can thank him for showing you the way, he disappears around the corner, leaving you all by yourself.
What's with these people so rudely abandoning you?
A long sigh leaves your throat as you walk inside, wash your hands and put on the protective gown. Your first surgery in this hospital will happen under huge pressure since you still don't know how you'll manage to be in the presence of Dr Kim.

'You see clear lights of the operating room, the little boy lying on the operating table. Doctor Kim and you are fighting during the operation, not noticing the traumatic aortic disruption in time.
A dark aura hovers over the little boy's body before his soul is pulled out of him, disappearing into the darkness.'

The vision of the near future leaves your mind, forming goosebumps on your skin. This won't happen, not on your first surgery. You need to save him no matter what, fuck the presence of Dr Kim, you'll only concentrate on the operation.
Keeping your hands up to avoid contaminating them, a knot ties itself inside your stomach when the doors open, revealing the room and everyone inside it. You can feel their eyes boring into you, waiting for you to introduce yourself according to protocol.
"Hello, I'm Dr Maciel and today I'll be performing the exploratory laparotomy on the patient. It's nice to meet you all." Your voice is a bit muffled because of the mask covering half of your face, as well as the sounds of all the machines inside the OR, but you don't mind it at all.
Everyone in the room bows to you except for Dr Kim, you bowing back before you stand in front of the operating table. Good, they heard you right, but next time you could try and talk just a tiny bit louder, that was too quiet even for you.
"Have you eaten anything today, doctor?" The deep and powerful voice echoes through the room, sending a shiver down your spine. You look up, staring right into Dr Kim's eyes.
You didn't notice the asymmetry in his almond eyes before, as well as the beauty mark on his lower right lid. It's a unique physical trait, having one monolid and one double eyelid.
You examining his eyes only took a brief moment, but not brief enough to avoid the raising of his finely shaped eyebrow. "Yes, Dr Kim," You answer shortly, hearing the scrub nurse arranging the instruments, probably trying not to focus on the two of you.
A deep hum escapes his throat as he closes his eyes, opening them up again just so that he can narrow them to slits. "Then speak the fuck up and start the surgery." Growling lowly, he keeps his eyes trained on you.
Don't react. He's trying to make you fail, don't fall for it even though that knot in your stomach won't stop bothering you. This is the moment where you decide the destiny of this child in front of you.
The boy needs you to help him as soon as possible and you can always spit fire at Dr Kim after the surgery is over and then run away as fast as your legs can carry you.
You chuckle politely, reaching your hand out towards the scrub nurse. "Scalpel." This time, your voice is steady and clear, causing Dr Kim to blink a few times since he doesn't expect you to be so confident all of a sudden, as well as non-reactive towards his aggressive way of talking to you.
Before you make the first incision, your eyes wander towards the anesthesiologist, watching him intently. He inspects the machines before switching his attention back to you, nodding slightly.
Without wasting another moment, you make the first incision, carefully starting to search for the place of the internal bleeding. It doesn't take you a lot of time at all, you find it immediately.
"Traumatic aortic disruption, just as I thought. The good thing is that it's only limited to the aortic isthmus." You sigh in relief, peeking up at Dr Kim for a brief moment.
His almond-shaped eyes are completely blank and focused on his task. He's doing a good job assisting you, which makes you wonder why did he let you be the surgeon in charge of this operation.
"Irrigation." He growls at the scrub nurse, taking a glance at you. "What are you waiting for? Suture the artery." Not taking his eyes off of the little boys' stomach, he motions you with his head towards the scrub nurse.
I hope she can do it, this requires a delicate hand and excellent technique. God, please don't let this little boy die. He doesn't deserve it.
The scrub nurse observes you carefully with worry engulfing her eyes. You lightly bow to her, nodding afterwards reassuringly. "Don't worry, I won't let him die. Suture please."
Her brows furrow anxiously before she hands you the suture, holding her breath as she watches Dr Kim and you. You breathe in slowly, concentrating every atom of your being on only one thing - suturing this artery flawlessly.
Each move you make with your hands is controlled, planned out and incredibly fast. Learning this special and quick way of suturing helps you reduce surgery time immensely, leaving the patient under anaesthesia for a shorter amount of time and reducing the post-op risks.
"Cut." You hold the thin thread up in the air, waiting for Dr Kim to cut the suture. Instead, he's just staring at the stitches you just made, his body frozen in the spot as he examines them. "Dr Kim, concentrate please."
Without a word, he shakes his head in disbelief before he cuts the thread. "Cut," He repeats after you, mumbling something under his breath as you continue to suture the artery.
In moments like these, you'd give anything to be able to read his mind and see what exactly he's thinking about. Alas, you can't do anything about it, so you concentrate on the artery again. One more knot and you're done. "Cut."
You hold the thread up once again, Dr Kim now reacting immediately after the shock from seeing your technique wears off completely.
Handing the suture back to the scrub nurse, you tilt your head to the side and raise your eyebrow at Dr Kim, a little smirk hiding behind your mask.
"You can close him up, right Dr Kim?" You chuckle and raise your hands above your waist once again, turning around and slowly making your way out of the OR.
You hear whispers and mumbling behind your back, causing a genuine smile to appear on your face when you catch all of their thoughts.
Except for Dr Kim Taehyung's, his mind remaining unreachable to you.

Now, this was a rollercoaster of emotions, I hope you like it! Please don't be shy, I appreciate every opinion and vote you leave for me! The next chapter will contain some delicate themes, so make sure you're prepared for them.
Lots of love, Dorami
