Chapter 2 - Ariadne Maciel

"Hey, wake up. You need to buckle your seatbelt," Jimin trails off, placing his hand on your shoulder and softly shaking you to wake you up.

You frown and pinch the bridge of your nose, groaning quietly because of the slight headache that appears out of nowhere. It's probably the change of pressure in the cabin so you shrug it off and blink lightly a couple of times, trying to wake yourself up.

Aish, she's so cute. I should ask her for her number, but I don't have the courage to do it. Should I? She probably has a boyfriend, I won't. Although not even once did she mention a boyfriend while we were talking throughout the flight. Still-

"Hey, why the long face? Sad that we have to part ways?" You smile sleepily while you straighten up in your seat and buckle the seatbelt, leaning forward so that you can check out his facial expression.

"Kind of, yeah," He mutters, biting on his lower lip as he tries to hide his flushed cheeks from you by looking the other way and ruffling his soft hair with his fingers to draw your attention away from his face.

Wow, sometimes I find her scary, it's as if she can read my mind. Breathe, those things don't exist. She's just intuitive, that's all. Okay, now it's my time to be a man! Ask her for fuck's sake, it's not like she'll bite your head off. Hopefully.

"So, can I maybe have your number?" He whispers, still not facing you completely.

You hum and tilt your head to the side, raising your eyebrow at him. "No," You simply say, causing him to snap his head towards you with a curious and hurt expression.

"What? Why not? You didn't find me entertaining enough for you?" His mouth pops open, his dark eyes filled with sadness as they observe every inch of your face.

"Well, there's no reason for me to use this phone number here, I need to get a local one." You chuckle lightly when Jimin puckers his lips in embarrassment and stays silent while nodding almost seamlessly.

When you two finally get off the plane and finish all the paperwork as well as get your luggage, you both walk out of the airport and head to the taxis.

You breathe in the fresh and slightly cold air when you get out of the airport, checking your phone and raising your eyebrows in surprise. Wow, it's late, almost four in the morning.

You're finally here, the country of your dreams, South Korea. Standing at Incheon airport still feels a bit surreal to you. Even though you've read quite a bit about Korea before coming here, it's still very different than your home country.

"Tell me where are you headed to exactly?" Jimin snaps you out of your thoughts and you glance at him, seeing him next to one of the taxis with his bags already packed in the boot of the car.

"Seodaemun-Gu. I'll book a hotel for the first couple of weeks because in this volunteering program they aren't providing me with any type of accommodation." You sigh and run your tongue over your upper teeth, a habit of yours your stepmother always hates seeing you do.

Jimin lets out a surprised huff, crosses his arms and leans on the car with a cunning aura surrounding him. You take a curious glance at him and wonder about the sudden change in his behaviour.

Thankfully, you can read his mind whenever you want.

It kind of works like a radio, when you concentrate on someone you can listen to their thoughts, but you can also completely shut it off so that the voices in people's heads surrounding you don't overwhelm you.

The diary your grandma left behind taught you how to ignore the unwanted thoughts. She also had the ability to read minds and she made sure to study her gift to the tiniest of details, as well as write about a very interesting man she was close to during the war.

If only she were alive to actually tell you their story. You'd love to know more.

You're immensely grateful that you found the diary in your mother's possessions. Some people have interesting thoughts, to put it simply. God knows how irritated you'd be if you had to listen to all of it every single day.

Is she being serious right now? To find a hotel room at this hour? She's really insane and so fucking lucky I approached her. Thankfully, I'm not a pervert or anything, although I could fuck her right here if only she asked me to.

"Want to be my roommate? We can split the rent and other living expenses and to be honest, my flat is close to Yonsei Severance Hospital. Also, we won't be seeing each other that much since I'm always at practise and you'll almost live in that freaking hospital.

"I know it might seem a bit sudden because it is, but I just can't let you wander alone at this hour. You can just stay the night and then find a hotel to stay in if you feel uncomfortable." He offers with a gentle smile while you're still processing what he just thought of a minute ago.

Clearing your throat, you close your eyes for a brief second, opening them up again when the vivid vision of the future disappears from your mind. The image of you and him hanging out in his flat and the genuine secureness you feel when you're with him help you decide.

"Jimin, consider this your lucky day because you've just got yourself a roommate!" A wide smile spreads across your lips as you playfully place your hands on your hips.

Yes, this certainly is a bit of a rushed decision, but what you saw in the vision is assuring you that there's no reason for you to decline his offer. This won't be the first time you'll do what other people consider is reckless.

You laugh out loud when he claps his hands together and hand him your luggage, watching as his eyes begin to glow with happiness when he takes your suitcases and packs them in the boot.

Swiftly opening up the back door for you, Jimin soon plops down on the seat next to you, you two getting comfortable in the backseat as he tells his address to the taxi driver.

"So, when will you leave for work tomorrow?" Jimin turns in his seat to face you when the driver starts driving to the right destination. You sigh and unlock your phone, searching for the email the hospital had sent you prior to your arrival.

You skim through it before you find the information you're looking for. "I should be there at nine in the morning. It's going to be enough sleep, right?" You hopefully glance at Jimin who just shrugs his shoulders and looks at you helplessly.

"Not exactly, but you'll manage I guess." He smiles apologetically at you before his phone rings, startling you both. After some fumbling around, he manages to take the phone out of his pocket and look at the caller, his face immediately losing its healthy colour.

Oh shit, I totally forgot about her! Here we go again. Please don't get mad at me, please don't get mad at me, please for the love of god, don't get mad at me Mina. Okay, here I go. I can do this, I'm a grown man for Christ's sake!

"Hey, Mina! Yes, hi... Um, sorry about that, it's just that- Yeah, okay, I'll call you when I get home, I promise. Okay, bye. No, I'm not hungry. Yes, I found my luggage. No, I'll text them tomorrow. Okay, bye-bye." He cuts the call and continues staring at his phone while not having a single thought in his head.

His mind is completely blank. It rarely happens that someone's mind becomes a tabula rasa, but when it does happen, you are always a bit paranoid thinking that you lost your gift.

You take a glance at the taxi driver who's driving without a care in the world, obviously not concentrating on the two of you, which makes you sigh in relief before you turn your attention back on Jimin.

The look on Jimin's face is the look of a man who is coming to terms with the fact that he's absolutely and utterly controlled by one woman. A woman who's destroying his ego and detrimentally affecting his mental health, leaving him on the verge of tears.

Your lips thin into a single line before you reach out to him and lightly pat his shoulder as he simply nods and closes his eyes for a moment.

"This woman will be the death of me," He sighs, pressing the bridge of his nose with his fingers.

"Get used to it, there's no other way around it." You chuckle and watch as he smiles and shakes his head in complete disbelief.

"Hell no, then I'll go to a freaking monastery and live a long and healthy life as a priest. Fuck this shit." Jimin growls defeatedly and lifts his head while looking at you with a depressed expression, making you laugh out loud at his remark.

The rest of the drive to Seoul is much calmer as both of you figure out the expenses and make plans about cleaning the flat as well as cooking the food.

The two of you really won't be seeing each other that often since he's basically at his company all the time and you'll be at the hospital as well. If your calculations are right, you'll only see each other in the evening if you're not working the night shift.

"Are you sure you're living on your own, Jimin?" He turns around to face you as he walks through the hallway and enters the vast space of his living room with your suitcases in his hands, smiling widely at your surprised face.

"What? You didn't expect it to be this huge?" He raises his fine eyebrows and heads to a hallway on his right, making you roll your eyes and shake your head at his childish thoughts.

You glance around the space, the faint smell of cinnamon filling your nostrils and relaxing your mind. The open space of the living room looks comfortable and neat, with various wooden decorations scattered around.

Large windows are allowing the illumination from the street lights to enter the room, giving it a very homey feeling. It was a wise choice to stay with Jimin and you're proud of yourself for trusting him.

"You'll regret those idiotic remarks of yours sooner or later. Is that the room you'll be lending me?" You scoff after you follow him and stand at the entrance of the room, earning a simple nod from him as he places your stuff on the floor.

"Make yourself at home. If you need anything you can always ask me for help, but I think you already know that so I'll go to my room and unpack. Have fun!" Jimin smiles brightly, allowing you to see his glistening pearly teeth.

"Okay, thanks. Oh yeah, can I ask you something?" You stop him mid-way, making him turn around to face you one more time, him patiently waiting for you to speak like some sort of little dog waiting for its owner's order.

A little smile appears on your face before you continue. "Will you have time tomorrow to go with me and show me around a bit before we both go to work? I can also get myself a new phone number. And yeah, could you tell me the passcode?"

You stare at him expectantly as his facial expression becomes genuinely confused. "What passcode? Oh yeah, I guess both the WiFi and the door passcode?"

What was it again, Mylittlepony1? I know the passcode is 080709*, but I'm not that sure about the WiFi password. Shit, I'll have to look it up.

"I'll think about it." With a huge smirk on his face, he quickly gets out of the room before you can react, slamming the door behind himself as you hear his booming laughter from the other side.

You cover your mouth and chuckle lightly, loving the fact that you can read him like an open book while he has no clue what's actually going on.

"So, Mylittlepony1? Let's see," You whisper as you get your phone out of your bag and type in the password, clapping lightly to yourself when the notifications start popping up.

You go through the messages before you open up your music and turn up the volume, slowly but surely unpacking and arranging your clothes and other personal stuff around the room, finding a perfect spot for every piece you own.

When you finish up sometime later, you look around as you rest your hands on your hips and admire the space. It'll look amazing in the morning when the sunlight starts beaming through the wide window.

It feels comfortable and cosy, the pastel colours, various medical books and posters putting your mind at ease and making this space your personal heaven.

It still looks a bit barren, but it'll work just fine since you can always go shopping for accessories. Maybe you can even buy some fairy lights on your way back home tomorrow evening.

You stop walking for a moment to be able to admire the enormous building towering over you, reading the sign above the entrance. Yonsei Severance Hospital.

This is the place you'll be working at for the next nine months, primarily taking care of little children and trying to help them in any way you can. Of course, you'll still work in other wards as well, but your main focus is still the kids.

You feel your breath getting uneven from excitement, so you close your eyes for a brief moment and try to calm yourself down.

With a barely visible smile spreading across your lips, you breathe in before you continue walking towards the building, slowly making your way inside and examining the large space representing the main hall.

A lot of people are in a rush, some of them not even noticing you as they sprint by, occupied by their worries. The whole building leaves a very strong impact on you, from its sheer size to the decorations adorning it, making you gaze around in amazement.

Snapping yourself back to reality, you head towards the information desk and gently smile at the woman standing on the other side.

"Good morning, I'm here to see the dean of the hospital, Dr Park," You say, expectantly watching the young woman who nods and turns to the computer before glancing at you once again.

"Can you please tell me your name? Miss Maciel Ariadne, right? The dean is waiting for you in his office, go to the first floor and then head right. I'm sure you won't miss it." She smiles at you innocently, getting back to her seat.

You slightly bow to the girl before heading upstairs, wondering what the dean looks like since you've only been able to hear his voice. From your impression, he should be a man in his late forties, early fifties, always dressed up and looking extremely good for his age.

You easily find the way to his office, mustering up the courage and knocking on the door three times before heading inside. It's easier if you don't give yourself time to think when you find yourself in these types of nerve-wracking situations.

"Dr Maciel, it's so nice to finally be able to see you in person! What a beautiful young lady. Please, have a seat." Dr Park immediately jumps up from his seat and heads towards you, shaking your hand vigorously and then placing it on your shoulder, his other hand motioning you to sit in one of the comfortable chairs in front of his desk.

You do as you're shown and straighten your back once you get comfortable, turning your attention to Dr Park who's making his way around the desk.

His soft curls are already starting to show some grey hairs, but his face is still holding up well, without a single wrinkle spoiling it. His suit is neatly ironed, perfect, like everything else in the office which is giving off a very professional aura.

I hope that everything goes well with this little one, she's supposedly a genius. I'm curious how she'll fit in with the rest, especially him. So, what should I tell her first?

Just as Dr Park is preparing to start his introduction speech, someone violently barges into the room, almost knocking down the door in the process.

What a vulgar piece of crap, you think to yourself as you roll your eyes and breathe in, before turning around to face the intruder.
