Chapter 1 - Ariadne Maciel

"Have a safe flight!" The old man says as he takes out your suitcase from the trunk of his taxi, placing it on the ground and smiling at you politely.

You nod and smile back, turning around to face the entrance to the airport, sighing deeply before you make your way inside. There's no turning back now, this is it, your volunteering awaits you.

When you enter the building, you immediately head to check-in for your flight. The queue in front of you is crowded as always, but you smile to yourself and head towards the closed lane.

Everyone waiting in the queue glances at you, wondering why you are there when the line is clearly where they're standing at.

You just shrug innocently when a young employee shows up behind the desk and opens the exact lane you're in, causing half of the people to rush towards you and make another queue behind you.

Smiling at the girl behind the counter, you give her your passport and your ticket, as well as all of the documents required for your stay in the country of your dreams, South Korea. Curiously glancing at her name tag, you squint a bit so you can read the name correctly. Alyssa.

Ah god, another one of these bitches. She's probably only travelling there to find a rich old man to marry and take all of his money, she's definitely got the looks for that.

You let out a small chuckle and brush away the girl's insulting thoughts, leaning closer to her while she's checking your documents. "Can you please check if my visa is valid? I'm staying there for nine months, I need to be sure everything is perfectly fine with it."

There, a little test. You're completely aware that there's no need for her to do that, but you're curious to see how she'll react.

You raise your eyebrows in surprise when she rolls her eyes at you before doing as you requested. "Is there a problem? Have I done anything to upset you?" You ask her as you tilt your head to the side, observing how her facial expression changes as you speak to her.

Damn, she's annoying. She's trying to get on my good side with that acting of hers, huh?

"You know Alyssa, you don't have to be judgemental towards other people just because they are dressed nicely or look prettier than you by your twisted standards, so can you please do your work properly and stop harassing me in your thoughts? Thank you." You sigh, reaching your hand out to take your passport and other documents from her, watching her bewildered expression.

"Wh- How did you know?" She spits out, her eyes scanning you frantically. She looks like a frightened animal, listening out for a nearby predator that will pounce at her and devour her at any given moment.

"Watch your coffee," You add as you turn your back to her, hearing a scream a second after when she knocks off her coffee from the table and spills it on herself.

A few people who were eavesdropping on your conversation lightly gasp, following your figure with their curious glances before it disappears in the crowd.

This day can't possibly get any better, you think to yourself as you finally get on the plane and prepare for a very long flight ahead of you.

Just as you're about to put your headphones on and listen to some of your favourite songs while reading Growth of the Soil from Knut Hamsun, a very attractive guy approaches your seat and glances at you before looking at his ticket.

Wow, she's beautiful. I wonder if she's a nice person too.

"Hi! Is this 45C?" The handsome guy asks you, getting a few strands of his light-coloured hair off of his forehead as words escape from his full lips.

Shiny silver rings are adorning his small yet manly hand and you can't help but notice his bicep bulging underneath the white shirt. His voice is delicate and extremely careful as if he'll hurt your ears if he speaks any louder.

A chuckle escapes your throat as you nod, pointing him to where that exact numbering is written on the little metal tablet on the side of the seat.

Shit, that was a stupid way to start a conversation. Fucking hell, why do I always get so flustered in front of pretty girls? Jesus Jimin, calm down. She's a person, she definitely won't think anything weird of it. Just sit down for now.

He listens to himself and sits in the seat beside you, sighing deeply and pulling out his phone from the pocket of his jeans. He's dressed casually, yet still very stylishly. He's definitely in the entertainment industry, there's no doubt about that.

"I'm Ariadne. You must be Jimin, right?" Oh fuck, he didn't tell you his name yet, you just heard it in his thoughts.

His head snaps toward you, his eyes wide and in high alert. "How did you know my name? I didn't introduce myself to you yet," He hums, his eyebrows furrowing as he clenches the phone in his hand tightly.

You clear your throat and straighten your back, glancing at the window before looking back at his still slightly scared expression.

What the hell? Oh yeah, I am a celebrity, after all, she must've seen me on television before. God, I'm still not completely used to being recognised on the street, or more like being recognised on a plane.

"Oh sorry, you just reminded me of someone." You decide not to say anything else and stay silent. Opening up your book and running your fingers down the inked paper, you revel in the familiar feeling before you look up at Jimin again, just to catch his curious eyes staring right back at you.

"You're right, my name is Jimin. Park Jimin. I'm just not used to being recognised by people, I'm still new to this industry. It's nice to meet you, Ariadne." Your name rolling off his tongue causes a tingling feeling in your stomach, his velvety voice filling your ears as his hand extends towards you.

You naturally take his hand in yours, shaking it lightly with a tiny smile adorning your face. "I'm sorry about that, I hope I didn't upset you too much. It's just that sometimes I have these hunches so to speak, so from time to time I can make people around me feel a bit uncomfortable."

His warm hand retreats from yours when he raises it to wave it lightly, showing you it's nothing to worry about.

Shit okay, that was weird. The first encounter with a fan, although it doesn't look like she knows my work. Hm, maybe she didn't hear Serendipity before or she's just too shy to talk about it now.

You chuckle slightly at his remark, causing him to raise his eyebrow at you. Only then you manage to notice an earring decorating his left ear. You rarely see guys with earrings, the little piece of jewellery making him look even more attractive than he already is.

His sharp jawline clenches as he blows a bit of air out of his nose angrily. "What? Do I have something on my face?" He leans closer to you, expecting you to get rid of that something.

"Yeah, your hair to be exact. Stay still for a moment," You say as you lift your hand towards his face and remove an imaginary piece of fluff from his light-coloured hair.

The corner of your lips pulls up in a smile when your fingers brush through his soft locks, the feeling of his intense stare fixated on you sending a light shiver down your spine. Damn, he's incredibly attractive.

He nods as a sign of gratefulness and answers his phone that had started buzzing as you were playing with his hair.

No one except your family knows that you can read people's minds, as well as see the future from time to time. Not that you have any friends though. You were always a loner, only focusing on your studies.

You had a couple of boyfriends, but they would leave as soon as they'd hear that you don't want to have anything even remotely close to sexual intercourse. The thought of having it with them wasn't entertaining for you at all.

Will you ever leave me alone? Jesus, you can seriously be so annoying sometimes. Woman, I'm only getting back a few days before you, nothing will happen. Can you stop being so paranoid already?

"Of course Mina, please don't worry. I can take care of myself properly. Yes, I booked the ticket as you told me to. No, no one has bothered me. Oh, we're about to take off, I'll text you when we land. Thank you, see you soon."

"Your manager perhaps?" You question when he sighs as he cuts the call, glancing at you and nodding lightly with his eyes closed.

"Yeah, she needs to stay here a few days longer than me to finish some paperwork so she has to make sure everything's fine. You seem like you know who I am, but you don't really listen to my work, am I right?" He raises his eyebrows, fiddling with his phone as he waits for your answer with a hint of anxiety.

"You're absolutely right about that, I'm sorry. I'd just seen you on TV before and I wasn't exactly sure it was you so I just tried my luck. I guess I was right." You shrug and bite your lower lip, noticing a wide smile appearing on his face as he nods and shifts his attention to his phone.

Fine, if she didn't hear it up until now, I'll show it to her. I feel a lot more comfortable now knowing that she isn't exactly a fan of mine. That's a good thing, I don't want to have fans as friends.

You pretend to read a line from the book as Jimin searches for the song on his phone, a slight smile adorning your face as you think about how nice he is, thinking he's your friend and all even though you're still basically strangers.

You wonder if you should ask him about why he decided to become a singer in the first place, but you decide it's better to wait for the right moment.

"Tell me what you think when you listen to it, but please for the love of everything holy, be honest with me! I'm only interested in your honest opinion, I don't want to hear another basic comment on it. If I do, then I'll know you're the most boring person alive." Jimin laughs as he hands you his headphones, you rolling your eyes at him as he presses play.

You can recognise his voice immediately, but it sounds so different this time. It contains so much fear and pain, but it's still perfectly clear and soft.

Every word and tone he sings is causing you to empathise with him and just as you're about to start singing along, the song ends, almost leaving you in tears.

You take a look at him and observe his features as he patiently waits for your critique. You can see that he's nervous, his teeth sinking into his lower lip as his eyes wander away from yours every now and then.

"As you already know, this era of music we live in has set a basic task to each and every musician and that task is to make a mainstream song that sounds like every other so that it can gain popularity and rise to the top of the list, until it inevitably falls down, another song similar to it taking its place," You start, watching as his face saddens a bit when those words leave your mouth.

"You're right about that, I-" He starts, but you cut him off immediately.

"You didn't let me finish Jimin. You said that you wanted my honest opinion and now you're here not listening to what I have to say to you."

His eyes widen in shock and he places his tiny hand over his mouth as you scold him, nodding to let you know that you can continue.

"As I was saying, this song is completely written from your heart and I can hear it. I can hear your life turning upside down as you met that someone, your soulmate. I can hear your pain when you realise that love also hurts and is so fragile and delicate, but you still can't do without it because it brings you so much joy." You clear your throat before continuing.

"You succeeded in delivering that message to me through your vocals. I don't want to analyse any further because this can take a while, but I'm very glad you let me listen to it," You finish and watch as Jimin's mouth pops open, his expression displaying utter disbelief.

He looks so satisfied and surprised with what you've told him a moment ago and it seems like you left a deep impression on him, which makes you smile widely as you continue to watch him.

"Wow, thank you, Ariadne. I really wasn't expecting this, you left me speechless." He huffs as he runs his fingers through his hair, glancing down at the ground as he tries to recollect himself.

"I usually leave people speechless, it's nothing new to me." You wink at him and laugh loudly when he clicks his tongue and shakes his head at you.

"Such an attitude," He hums, immediately laughing afterwards. "So, I didn't exactly get the chance to ask you what you are doing on this flight. Care to share?"

He looks at you expectantly, tilting his head to the side as his eyebrow raises slightly. You nod in agreement and lean your elbow on the armrest, puckering your lips in the process and carefully choosing your words.

"I'll be volunteering for the next nine months or so, operating on very sick children to try and help them as much as I can," You say, noticing in the corner of your eye how Jimin's body stiffens as he bites his lower lip again.

"Wow, that's a very humanitarian thing to do. It's impressive," He trails off, not really knowing what to say next.

"Why don't we change the topic? I guess you're not used to having surgeon friends yet." You chuckle when you see his expression lighten up, both of you being on the same plane and breathing the same air, but having completely different goals set in mind.

A sudden wave of uneasiness washes over you, warning you that maybe not everything will go as planned, but you brush it away and concentrate on Jimin who's enthusiastically speaking to you.

You're fine, nothing bad is going to happen. Hopefully.
