So how could I dance with another, since I saw her standing there?
----------
It was another great party at Charlie Carter’s house, with everyone dancing and having fun throughout the whole house. Everyone who was anyone in that town was at this party.
But Paul wasn’t dancing. None of his friends were either. The four of them were sitting down on the couch in the family room. They were just chatting about random nonsense.
“So, I was like, no, girl, this is what-,” one of Paul’s friends began. But, then he stopped talking, since he had noticed that his friend had stopped paying attention. “Paul?”
“Huh, what?” Paul asked, looking back at his friend.
“Are you okay?” Paul’s friend asked.
“What? Yeah, I’m fine,” Paul responded.
“Have you been paying any attention?”
“Uh...no,” Paul admitted.
“What were you even paying attention to?”
Paul pointed to the other side of the room. “Her,” he said. There was a girl standing there, dancing. She looked slightly younger than everyone else at the party, maybe seventeen or so. She was beautiful. In Paul’s mind, she was more beautiful than any other girl at the party.
“Who, her?” another one of Paul’s friends asked. He pointed to a girl standing near her.
“No, not her,” Paul said. “Her.” He pointed again to the girl.
“Lila?” the last friend asked.
“Is that her name?”
“Yeah. She’s Charlie’s little sister. He couldn’t get her to leave. He’s pretty upset about it,” the last friend said.
“She’s beautiful,” Paul said.
“You’re kidding,” the first friend said.
“I’m not,” Paul said. He stood up and walked away from his friends.
“Hey, Paul, where are you going?” they called to him. But Paul ignored them, and kept going to the girl. As he neared her, his heart started pounding, and she hadn’t even looked over at him yet. How did that even happen?
Lila looked over at him as he got there, and Paul got a little feeling in his chest. He didn’t know what it meant at first. He spoke up after realizing what it meant. He hadn’t even said a single word to her, and he already could see himself falling for her. How could he already see that, when he hardly knew her? He didn’t know. But, he shrugged it off, and spoke to her. “Hey, wanna dance?” he asked, and he took her hand into his.
“Uh, sure…” she said softly, as a slow song began. He wrapped his arms around her waist and she wrapped hers around his neck. They began to dance together to the music, enjoying the moment.
----------
“Paul?” Lila asked him as the party was winding down. They had been dancing all night together, and it was almost time for him to leave.
“Yeah?” Paul responded. “What is it?”
“You know I’m just seventeen, right?”
“Yeah,” Paul said, nodding. “What’s the problem?”
“I know you’re the same age as my brother. You’re okay with this?” Lila asked.
“Of course,” he said. Then, he added, “Did I tell you how beautiful you look?” Lila looked at him confused. “Well, you look beautiful...beyond compare.”
“I bet you say that to every girl,” Lila said.
“I don’t. It’s the truth, though, I swear,” Paul told her.
“Don’t lie,” Lila said.
“I’m telling the truth, though,” Paul said. Lila shrugged. “What do I have to do to prove it to you?”
Lila had a tiny smile form on her lips. “Call me tomorrow,” she said. “Then, when I’m not dressed up for a party, you can tell me the truth.”
“Okay, sure,” Paul said. “I will,” he added, and kissed her cheek. “Bye, Lila.”
“Bye, Paul,” she said, and Paul walked out of the building. Both of them were smiling the rest of the night.
Since the beginning of the party, Paul had had his eyes on her. And since the moment when Paul finally went to talk to her, Lila didn’t dance with another person once since he saw her standing there.
