Chapter 3
Morgan walked up to the booth where her first customer was seated and put on a charming face, "Welcome to the Shamrock Diner, what can I get you here today?" She asked with her order slips and pen out, ready to write. The old man the occupied the booth had very furrowed and bushy gray brows and thin hair with some gray scruff on his chin and heavy honest eyes, "black coffee with the eggs benedict, doll, thank ya.." Writing down the order Morgan tipped her head and replied, "My pleasure!" Bringing the order up to Gustavo and tapping the bell. That was when the breakfast rush started. After getting the old man his eggs and coffee, people started to come in. And not just by themselves but in pairs and small groups, and even medium sized parties. And as quickly as it started, it then ended just as soon, or so it seemed. It was 11:00 in the morning and Morgan was bringing back the last table's dishes before going back out to wipe everything down when she heard some commotion in the back. She perked up and tilted her body to try and peek in but to no avail. Then, she heard a crash. Morgan dropped everything and rushed over to see Jake on the ground and shards surrounding him. Gustavo was yelling at him for being such a klutz when Morgan quickly asked, "you okay boss??" There was obvious worry in her voice but she tried to keep it low key. Jake just smiled, chuckling, "I'm aye okay!" He replied with a thumbs up. His face seemed softly lit. Almost as if there was a light emitting from him. Morgan felt her heart thud heavily in her chest as she danced around the broken shards of the shattered plate to get to the broom and help clean up. It was only her first day! She doesn't even know Jake that well. Maybe it was just her. What was that smile? She had to be overthinking this, right? With these new thoughts plaguing her mind throughout the day, her shift was over. Gustavo left after the dinner rush and left the two to clean up front of the diner. Morgan changed back into her clothes and packed her stuff up to go back home when she came out and saw Jake sitting at the counter staring off.
He was in some pretty deep thought it seemed. His chin resting upon his hand while his eyes seemed clouded and dilated. She hesitantly walked out and headed for the door not wanting to break his train of thought, "wait!" Jake spoke turning to face her. Morgan did an about face and spoke out, "sorry boss man, didn't mean to disrupt-" "you did great today, keep up the great work." Jake interrupted smiling that same smile that stuck in Morgan's mind. Making her heart thump again, "see you tomorrow, yeah?" "Yeah" Morgan replied with a soft grin and walked out. She took a deep breath, calmed herself down, and started the walk home. She consistently looked behind her and all around to make sure no one was following. She always felt like something was watching her but this time it was.. It felt real. As Morgan jumped the fence she grabbed a knife from her bag she managed to swipe from the diner and held it firm in her hand. She was ready to pounce. But that night, her only guest was silence. Accompanied with no sleep. The day that was threatening to shine upon her bloodshot and tired eyes was going to be tough. But, it was another day and another pay check. That's all she could ask for, for now.
