Chapter 1

I woke up that morning with my mom waking me up just like she said she would. "Today's the big day." She whispered and then walked out of my room. I rubbed my eyes and sat up in bed after she left. Today is going to be awful, I thought as I walked over to my dresser and picked out the best outfit that would make me practically invisible.

I slipped on the outfit and looked in the mirror. The color black was the only thing I could see. A black hoodie, with black leggings, and black boots. I tucked my straight, ash brown hair into my hood and walked out of my bedroom. Eggs and bacon greeted me on the table.

"Woah, did you go goth overnight?" My little brother, Alex, asked.

I hated the idea of being goth, but I ignored him and shoved my breakfast in my mouth, not bothering to sit down. After I finished the last piece of bacon, I grabbed my dark purple book-bag and my iPod and walked out the front door.

I turned on my iPod and silently walked to the city bus station. I sat on the bench and blasted my music, studying every beat and note being played. I closed my eyes and set my book-bag down next to me. I ignored all sound around me, except for my music and moved my fingers acting like I had my guitar with me. Either ways my music was ear achingly loud... I heard the bus come. How can you miss it? I thought as I grabbed my book-bag and slung it over my shoulder.

I walked inside the bus and took the farthest seat in the back. I sat next to the window and put my bag down next to me and watched as the bus started moving.

I took out my earbuds as I walked into the school. No one looked my way. So far so good, I thought as I roamed the halls looking for my classes. I found the room I was looking for. Holding my breath, I stepped into the classroom.

I took the seat farthest in the back next to a window. My teacher walked up to me, "Hello, you must be Abby Canzone. My name is Mrs. Harper and I will be your homeroom teacher this year." Her voice had cheery vibe, but also a tone that said, if you get on my nerves, you're dead.

I smiled and nodded at her. She looked like she was about to say something, but then more students walked into class. She left to greet them. I then shoved my earbuds in my ears and started pulling my school supplies out of my bag. Seconds later, a boy in casual clothing walked in and sat in the seat next to mine. He glanced at me. I continued secretly listening to my music and unloading my school supplies.

He turned his attention back to the front of the class just as I finished unloading my book bag. I left my hood on, hiding my earbuds and acting like I was paying attention. The bell suddenly rang.

Everyone in the class started gathering their things. Probably switching to the next class, I thought. I grabbed my things and walked out of the room following some of my classmates to the next class. I looked around the hallway seeing people talking to their friends. A pang of jealousy went through me, but I shook it off and kept walking.

After sitting through three classes, lunch time finally came. I got in line, my music still blasting in my ears. I looked in front of me and saw a girl with light pink tipped brown hair... dancing. I squinted. She has earbuds. No one looked at her though, she was just jamming out and no one noticed. I smiled and pulled off my hood. Could this year be different?

The girl with pink tips turned around and saw my earbuds. She smiled and extended her hand, "Any girl who listens to music in school is a friend o' mine," She said as she chewed her gum, "Whatcha listening to?"

I looked at her extended hand and shook it, "Just the normal pop music... Nothing better to do."

She smirked, "Same here, sister. I'm Lana, what's your name?"

"Abby."

"Well, Abby... I think we are going to get along well," She said as she slid her lunch tray down the line. I followed her and put an apple and a sandwich on my tray. "Wanna sit with me?"

"Sure," I replied as we walked out of the lunch line and into the noisy cafeteria. I turned my music up louder.

As I was walking, I saw the same boy that sat next to me in class. He was sitting with other students but wasn't talking to any of them. He looked at me. I held my tray with one hand and pulled on my hood following Lana.

We took our places at the table across from the boy. I couldn't help but look at him. He was sitting alone... yet he wasn't sad. He was happy even.

Lana looked to where I was looking and smirked, "First day and we got crushes don't we?" She said with a giggle. My cheeks reddened.

"No... I don't even know his name."

She laughed harder, "It's called love at first sight, sweetheart."

I leaned our conversation elsewhere, "So... are you from New York?"

"Yeah, how'd you know?" She asked as she spit her gum out onto a napkin.

"Your accent," I said as picked up my sandwich and started eating, "So... do you..." I was scared to ask, "Do you have any friends?"

"Oh yeah, plenty," She said, but I could tell her focus was somewhere else. I followed her gaze to see her staring at a guy a few tables down. I rolled my eyes.

"Love at first sight?" I asked.

"Yeah... I'll catch up with you later, Abby," Lana said winking as she left to a different table. I sighed. I looked around to find that the boy who sat next to me in class wasn't at the original lunch table anymore. I looked around. Where did he go?

I shook my head. Knock it off, Abby. You don't even know the guy, I scolded myself in my head. I shook my head again and reached for my bag, taking out my notebook. I looked around making sure no one was nearby. Coast is clear. I started writing my next lyrics for my song in my notebook.

"Mmhmm..." I started humming as my favorite song started playing on my iPod. Out of nowhere I heard a voice behind me.

"You have a pretty voice," A boy said behind me. I slammed my notebook shut and looked at the boy.

It was the one that sat next to me in class.

I blushed, "I was just humming."

"Well... then that says a lot about you," He replied as he threw his disposable tray in the trash. He walked away before I had a chance to ask what he meant.

RING!

The bell rang again. Everyone got back up and ran to their classes. I sat in the middle row of my next class I was sent to. Lana came in and sat down next to me and gave me a small wave.

As my teacher raved on about biochemistry, I glanced at Lana. She was writing a note. She then folded it messily, and secretly passed the note to me. I grabbed it.

The note said, I saw you with Liam, with a face smiling and winking next to it. I flipped the paper over. Who's Liam? I wrote and passed it back to her. She scribbled something down and passed the note back, He's that guy you were looking at. You know... at lunch.

I blinked staring at the page. Liam. I looked at the name and then glanced up. The teacher was looking at me. I shoved the note in my bag and ripped out an earbud making sure she wasn't talking to me. She wasn't thankfully, but she did give me the death stare. I pulled out my other earbud. Great. This teacher already doesn't like me.

I glanced at Lana to see her mouthing, Sorry.

I shrugged. At least I have a friend. I smiled. And because I couldn't help it... I slid my earbuds back in.
