Chapter 63

Kaia's P.O.V:
Finally it's Saturday! I swear the days have been dragging on. Dani and I spent all night last night getting more studying done. It's great to have a roommate who's also serious about her grades. We're the perfect duo.

It's just past lunch time and I've been on water since this morning. I'm sure James would appreciate me with a flat stomach rather than a full belly for the shoot.

Although I told Dani several times that James is really into my more natural look, she's still keen on coming along as my 'stylist'. I don't even know what that means, to be honest.

"All packed! We can leave now" Dani says with her brightest smile.

"What's the smile for?" I asked, walking out the door.

"Because you're letting me tag along. Yay!" She squealed with joy.

"Just don't ask James too many questions, he might get distracted and the shoot will take longer" I said, locking the door.

"I won't. Promise!" Dani said, happily.

Just as we were walking towards the entrance, our cab was here.

"Right on time" Dani said as she flagged it down. We quickly hopped in and gave the address.

"You sure you wanna go there, ladies?" The cab driver asked.

I actually had no idea where we were headed, James just gave me an address and said to meet him there.

"Um. ..yeah, we'll be alright" I said, looking at Dani who was now looking at me wide-eyed.

20 minutes later we were parked outside an abandoned carnival ground. The cab driver dropped us off by the old gates and I quickly spotted James who was setting up inside.

"Why here? This place creeps me out" Dani said, clutching onto my arm.

"It's broad daylight, Dani! And it's a beautiful day. Nothing creepy here" I reassured her.

"Ahhh! The star of the show is finally here" James said, welcoming me with a hug.

"James, you remember Dani right?" I said, gesturing at her.

"Oh yeah, the roommate? How are you?" He asked Dani politely, shaking her hand.

"I'm fine, boy. ..how you doing?" Dani said chirpily, scanning James from head to toe.

I quickly pulled her away and excused us for a sec.

"Dani! Quit checking him out!" I said to her in a hushed tone.

"Girllll, I can't help myself. He is fresh meat. Damn" Dani replied, glancing over in James direction again.

"Stop it" I said, pointing a finger at her.

"Ready to start, Kaia?" James called out.

I walked back over to him and he handed me my outfit for today. I unzipped the bag and felt totally childish.

"Um. ..James? Are you serious?" I asked, looking at the dress. It was pastel pink and was the same material as a ballerinas tutu. It was beautiful but I wasn't too sure it would match a natural look.

"It's perfect for you. Trust me. You'll look like a kid that never got to go to the carnival, and now you're finally here and it's...over" James said with a slight smile.

I rolled my eyes and jumped into a booth to change into my short pink dress. It was strapless, so that's pretty enough for me. The shoes though were the highlight and they were definitely my type. Black lace up boots, shiny and just above my ankles. I loved them!

"Wow. You look like a doll slash punk, I love it girl!" Dani chuckled as I stepped out of the booth.

"Just as I thought you would look" James said with a smile.

"Now let me mess up your hair a bit and pinkify your face. Don't worry, James and I talked it over" Dani said, holding her makeup kit.

I looked into Dani's cosmetic mirror and almost scared myself. I looked like a loony from the psycho house.

"Dani, what have you done?" I asked in shock. I cannot believe this is part of my shoot.

"James' instructions, girl. That guy has some vision, damn" Dani said, looking pleased at the mess she's created on my face.

"Fine. Let's get this over with!" I mumbled to myself.

After the shoot was done, we went to a diner down the road from the carnival ground. It was a small, cosy place and James swore they had the best milkshake in the whole of the West Coast, which was pretty hard to believe until he ordered me a triple chocolate fudge milkshake. I thought I had passed away, the taste was heavenly. You could really taste the fudge, it was incredible.

"We have to come here more often guys" Dani said, slurping her strawberry milkshake.

"Mm hmm" I agreed in between sips.

"Okay, all done. These are the photos from today and Kaia, I must say- you were incredible. Even better than the last shoot. You've got talent" James said, moving his laptop to face Dani and I.

"Oh my gosh! Girl! Look at you. Your hair is fire, for real!" Dani said, admiring my cotton candy inspired hairdo. I looked crazy but somehow these two didn't think so.

We spent the next hour or so talking about school work. Exams are starting on Monday and I'm still not ready. Dani asked James like a million questions, I could tell he was starting to get irritated which was quite funny.

Just as we were about to leave, the bell chimed which meant that someone was entering the diner. Dani, being the nosiest from us looked up first. Then her mouth fell open and she nudged my shoulder.

I looked at her then looked at who had entered. It was Todd. Looks like he was ordering food for.. .two?

"Maybe he's on a date with Samantha, no big deal" I said, finishing off my milkshake in peace.

"Well I don't see her anywhere" Dani said, sticking her head out to look for any sign of Samantha.

"Maybe she's in the car" James suggested. He was packing up his laptop and camera gear.

"Good guess. Now let's just wait for the perfect moment. ...and- go. Come on, let's go!" She said, padding over to the entrance. James and I crept close behind her and we all stood behind one of the trucks parked outside.

"Remind me why we're hiding again? He's our friend Dani!" I said. I can't believe we're seriously doing this to Todd.

"Don't you find it funny he's never actually introduced us to her? I mean, we're not that bad, are we?" She casually asked James.

"Oh no, not at all" James replied, shaking his head.

We watched as Todd exited the diner with two sets of takeaway. He placed it in the backseat before climbing into the drivers seat.

"I can't see anything. We have to wait till he drives past us" Dani said, squinting her eyes to try and get a glimpse of Samantha.

"Okay, well they should be coming this way any time now" James said, peering out from behind the truck.

Few seconds later we all ducked as Todd drove past us. He drove to the end of the carpark where he had to wait till the long line of cars had moved. Once he turned left, out of the carpark- we were all able to catch a glimpse of who his date was.

"Why do I feel so shocked?" Dani asked.

"Why am I so calm?" I replied.

"Why am I even hiding out here with you guys? And why is your friend on a date with a guy? It makes no sense" James said.

"I have no idea" Dani and I said in unison.

**

Dani and I flagged down a cab and headed back to school. James waited for Shawn to pick him up from the diner.
We sat in silence half the way back before Dani decided to speak.

"I don't understand, Kaia. We're practically best friends and he couldn't even share the most important detail in his life with us" Dani said, looking disappointed.

"Maybe he's trying to figure out how to tell us. He must be just as confused as we are right now. We can't judge him" I replied.

"I guess you're right, I just feel so bad. I thought we were close" Dani said, frowning.

"I know. And we are, just give him some time. He'll eventually come around. Let's just be supportive when he does, okay?" I said, trying to cheer Dani up.
"We don't even know for sure that it's true, but if it is- he'll need us by his side".

"Okay. Now tell me about you and Adonis. ..I mean, Ash" Dani said chirpily.

I chuckled a bit and looked out the window, we were nearing campus, about a minute away.
I looked back at Dani and smiled. She instantly smiled back. Weirdo.

"There's not much to tell. We talked and texted abit. ..but I haven't heard from him since Thursday night. And I haven't seen him around school either" I said, trying to figure out what was up with him.

"Hmm. ..what you mean, talk? Talk as in conversation or talk 'talk'? Dani winked.

"Eew you're gross!" I said in a disgusted tone and she burst out laughing.

We arrived back at our room and both laid down, exhausted from the great day we had. From posing next to creepy clowns to having the best milkshake ever, I could call it a night right now and fall off to sleep.

A minute later I called Dani and she didn't reply. I turned to look at her and there she was, lying down like a drunkard- mouth open and snoring. She was fast asleep.
This makes a great photo.
I giggled as I got out my phone to take a quick picture of her. She'll be so embarrassed when I show her this. It's going to be so funny. I can't wait to see her facial expressions.

On that note I left my phone on the bedside table and tried to fall asleep. After a few minutes, I was successfully drifting off to sleep, picturing myself on my favorite, fluffy cloud.
