Chapter Thirty-Eight: Late Night Rendezvous
It was Stevie's turn to pick that night's movie, and she'd gone all out with her choice. She'd picked a movie about a young, plain woman who became entranced by an older, handsome, sophisticated man. He was using her, and she was the one arrested for the crimes he committed with her unknowing help.
In prison, the once sweet woman grew vengeful and angry. She promised that one day she would get payback. And she did. She grew into a sexy seductress and mapped out the perfect plan for her revenge during the time in prison. Once out, she put those plans into motion.
Married and rich, his schemes were bigger than ever. She tore his world to shreds without him knowing how it was happening until the end of the movie, when she revealed herself.
The movie in no way mirrored her own life. Yet, whenever there was a minor scene or comment that did, such as the man ditching his wife to hang out with another woman, Stevie would let out a forced cough.
Ada would shoot Stevie a glare, but her eyes would always be on the screen, as if her dramatic cough had never taken place. Her tactics were less than subtle and weren't leaving Ada with the clarity that Stevie was shooting for, but instead annoyance with her sister.
Their mom took the near empty bowl of popcorn rested on Stevie's lap. "Anyone want more?"
Considering Stevie had hogged most of the first batch, Ada spoke up. "Yes, please."
As soon as their mom left the couch and walked out of the room, Stevie gave up on what little subtly she had left. "What do you think they're doing right now?"
Ada had made the mistake of confiding in her sister about Tom's wife going over to his apartment, hence her obnoxious coughing. Now Tom appeared to be back on probation, his honesty about the situation seeming to fall on deaf ears with Stevie's judgement.
Still, Ada pretended that the get together between Tom and his wife wasn't weighing heavily on her mind all night. "Who?"
"Cut the bullshit," Stevie said. "You know what the hell I'm talking about."
Ada shook her head and sunk further into the couch. "They're just talking."
"Talking can lead to other things." Her argument made little sense. "It doesn't bug you he didn't tell you why she was coming over."
Hell yes, it bothered her. But she also hadn't asked. Ada decided to accept his honesty and not drill him for details, even if it led her to the brink of insanity. She'd also kept her phone downstairs to avoid messaging him every ten minutes. Ada checked it every half hour to see if there were new messages or a missed call, but so far she'd only received messages from Britt, reminding her it was the last day of school tomorrow as if she didn't already know.
Ada had been counting down the days until she was no longer Tom's student, but he still had another week after her graduation until he was no longer a teacher. The thought still saddened her.
"Yes, it bugs me," Ada answered, "but I trust him."
"What about her? Do you trust her?"
She'd met Elizabeth only a handful of times over the last four years, each time leaving her feeling inadequate.
It wasn't him that Ada couldn't trust. It was Tom who called her and let her know what was happening. A guilty man wouldn't have done that. But Ada didn't know his ex-wife well enough to know her intentions in going over to his apartment. For all Ada knew, she was trying to seduce him at this very moment.
There was no way to not think about something like this. On the outside, Elizabeth was more or less the perfect woman. She wasn't so tall that she toward over men, but she was tall enough to make girls like Ada feel like a small child. Her hair looked like it belonged in a damn shampoo commercial, flowing in cascading waves to her perfect breasts. Ada could only assume she worked out. Every part of that body seemed toned and perfectly tanned.
She hadn't seen the woman in a while, but she remembered meeting her for the first time her sophomore year. Ada wasn't as fat as she was all the years prior, but was still plenty chubby, hopelessly awkward and was struggling to get out of the shell she'd created within herself.
Then she saw Tom's wife, and she was like the epitome of everything a man wanted in a woman. Tom had reassured Ada that Elizabeth was an awkward teenager, as was he. He told her they'd both been social outcasts for most of high school.
It gave Ada hope back then that she could be grow up beautiful.
"I don't need to trust her. I just need to trust that Tom won't fall for anything she tries to pull."
That was what Ada needed to remind herself of. Whether Elizabeth was trustworthy didn't matter. She just had to trust in him.
Ada pushed herself from the couch and didn't bother looking at her sister when she walked away. "I'm going to bed."
"It's still early," Stevie called out.
It wasn't that early. The hour was nearing ten and Ada had had just about as much of that movie and her sister as she could stand. "Goodnight!"
Ada slammed the door behind her and made her way down the steps, and she saw Tom laying on her bed, reading the book from her bedside table. A squeal escaped her lips at the sight and her body froze up, causing her to stumble down the next step.
Her mother opened the door at the top of the steps and looked down at Ada as she held on to the railing for dear life so she wouldn't fall in front of Tom, who was out of her mother's view. "You okay?"
Ada pulled herself together and regained full control of her balance. "Yup. Just tripped."
"You going to bed?"
Ada nodded. "Yeah. I'm super tired."
Her mother's green-blue eyes stared back at her in curiosity. "You sure you're okay?"
"I'm good," Ada responded, knowing full well she was acting weird, but unable to help it.
"Alright, then. Goodnight."
"Goodnight," she yelled back as her mother closed the door at the top of the steps.
Ada's attention returned to Tom, who closed the book he was reading and tossed it back on the table. "You hurt?"
"Just my pride," Ada said as she finished the descent down the stairs. "And maybe my elbow."
Tom propped himself up once she entered the room, his eyes shifting from concern to seeming more at ease with a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Want me to kiss it?"
She was half-tempted to take the offer, but there were things she needed to know first. She didn't want to bring down Tom's good mood, but she still needed answers. "That depends. Has your mouth been a good boy tonight?"
Tom's eyes only narrowed for a moment, but otherwise he appeared at ease. "It has. So has the rest of me."
Ada's body un-tensed and she walked over to the bed, feeling calm for the first time that night. At least, as calm as she could be with Tom in her bed looking back at her how he was. "So what did she come over for if it wasn't to have her way with you?"
Tom propped himself up further so he could reach her hand and tried to tug her down to the bed. "Wouldn't you like to know," he said in a cheeky tone.
Because of his answer, it felt like there was a secret he was keeping. If it wasn't something interesting, he just would have come out and said it. But he was acting more playful than usual, which piqued Ada's interest.
So she played along with Tom's game and crawled onto the bed, putting her legs on either side of Tom, who propped up by his elbows. He licked his lips before allowing his smile to grow and raised his knees to push her forward.
"How about..." she began, trying to think of some incentive. "I won't kiss you until you tell me."
Tom forced a half-assed glare and tried to hide his smile. "Who said I wanted to kiss you?"
His words somehow brought her back to two weeks earlier, after she'd admitted to wanting to kiss him. "Oh, you'll want me to. I plan on being very charming."
That smile he tried to suppress returned in full force. "I signed the divorce paper's tonight."
Everything in those words caused Ada to beam like a child waking up to presents on Christmas morning. "Really?"
"Really."
It was then that she realized that he allowed her to worry for the last several hours. She made her hand into a fist and whacked him in the stomach with it. "Why the hell didn't you tell me? I've been going crazy all damn night!"
Tom buckled at the impact, but didn't appear hurt by her lazy attempt. "So much for charm," he said in a breathless chuckle.
"You should have told me."
"You should have asked," Tom fired back.
Ada sulked when she realized she didn't have much of an argument. "I was trying to play it cool."
Tom pulled her down towards him. "And how did that go for ya?"
"I found out I'm not very cool," Ada said, admitting her defeat.
Tom pressed his grinning lips against hers and her mood shifted at the small act. His legs shifted her upwards with ease, deepening the playful kiss and turning it into something far more seductive and needy. While one of his hands grasped the back of her head to pull her closer yet, the other moved to the small of her back, his fingertips sliding beneath the waist of her jeans only for a moment before returning to her back.
The feel of his touch against her bare skin sent shivers through her body and she yearned for its return.
He released her from the kiss and dropped his head back against the bed.
"Why did you stop?" Ada couldn't help but ask after seeing the look on his face.
Tom wet his lips and swallowed hard, taking a few moments to think before responding. "I promised myself I wouldn't get carried away with you until after you graduated."
That didn't surprise her in the least. Tom was fighting his own demons in their relationship. And although he'd given up his title as 'teacher' for her, her role as his student would remain at least through the next day and his title would remain for another week. He'd broken enough of his morals already.
Feeling his erection pressed against it tempted her to push through those boundaries of his, but she knew that despite her desires, she had to respect them.
And when the bedroom door at the top of the steps opened, Ada knew she didn't have a choice either way.
"Ma just called," her dad said from the open doorway at the top of the staircase. "Said she seen a black car at the end of the driveway. You wouldn't know whose car that is, would you, Tom?"
Tom gave her a knowing look before calling out to her dad, "No clue."
Her father's heavy sigh was clear even through the distance. "When you leave, you're leaving through the front door. I gotta talk to you 'bout somethin'."
When the door slammed shut again, Ada looked back at Tom with narrowed green eyes and eyebrows squished together. "Why doesn't he sound like he wants to kill you?"
Tom just shook his head, appearing as baffled as she was. "Think it's a trap?"
Normally, she would have thought so, but there was no anger in her father's voice and anger was never something he tried to hide. "It didn't sound like one."
Tom shifted Ada off his body and kissed her one last time. "I should get up there."
Ada nodded her agreement. If her dad wasn't mad at Tom now, she didn't want to give it time for the emotion to surface. "I'll see you, tommorow."
Tom gave her one long look before responding, "Goodnight, Ada."
"Night."
And with that goodbye, Tom walked up the stairs and out of her view, closing the door behind him.
