Chapter 42

[Song: Mree - Goodnight and Goodbye (lyrics)]

A/N: I'm sorry it feels so rushed!

~a few hours later~

Kaito sat there in class. It was his last period and soon enough he would finally be going home. He already knew all the material. After all, it was pretty simple.

The teacher was in the middle of explaining when she was called out by another administrator. The students decided to use this time to freely converse, and just relax.

A blue haired girl walked over to him and tapped his shoulder. "Hey Kaito, Ms. Lawson wants you to see her after school." Then she simply walked away without another word. He just nodded and stared out the window.

His fellow classmates' voices seemingly faded from existence and there was only slightly muffled silence. It was actually pretty soothing to him.

'When was the last time I blocked everyone out like this?' He thought about it for a few moments and realized he just simply couldn't remember.

He had never really had some peace and quiet to himself. Time to relax from all the troubles of class and highschool drama. It was actually pretty ridiculous now that he really thought about it.

Kaito let his head hang and just laughed to himself. "Maybe I should just take a nap..." He put his head down on the desk and slowly drifted off to sleep. Little did he know that would be a choice he would soon regret.

"Will someone wake Kokichi up?" The teacher groaned. Kiibo nodded and stood up to walk over then slammed his book onto the desk.

"AH! OKAY, I'M AWAKE I'M AWAKE!" Kokichi jumped out of his chair and yelled. The class snickered and Kiibo just shook his head in disappointment while walking back to his desk.

"Good Afternoon Mr. Ouma, I see you're finally awake. If you would so kindly grace us with your presence after school for cleaning duty, it would be greatly appreciated."

"Nah man. I'm good. I'd rather die of boredom in my own home." The teacher just gave Kokichi a glare. Kokichi stood up and imitated him but with a sassy look.

"Alright then, cleaning duty for you. No questions asked. You know what, how about you take care of the next three classrooms down too."

"What?! Goddammit! Why the hell do I have to be punished?! Ugggggghhh. " Kokichi groaned and slipped back into his seat.

"And hm... who can I trust to watch you... Saihara?"

Shuichi sighed and nodded. "I promise to make sure he doesn't burn the school down." Kokichi stood up to argue with that comment but was silenced by the bell.

"Alright class. That's all for today. Get home safely now!" The teacher waved goodbye to the students leaving the classroom. Not long after, the teacher left as well. Making Kokichi and Shuichi the only people left in the classroom.

They stood there in silence for a few minutes until Kokichi walked over to the window. "Hey, Shuichi? Why are you still friends with me?"

The navy haired boy seemed confused by that question. "What do you mean? Of course I'm still friends with you. Why wouldn't I be?"

"I-" Kokichi stopped himself and suddenly whipped his head towards the door way. With a curious expression on his face, he ran over and looked down the hall. "Did you hear that?"

Tick

Tick

"There is is again! Do you hear it?" He asked. Shuichi shook his head, looking puzzled yet again. "What are you talking about? There aren't any noises."

His friend puffed out his cheeks in frustration then grabbed his hand. "I guess I'll just have to lead you to it!" Then he started to run off, dragging the young detective with him.

The poor children knew only a snip bit of what lied ahead of them. They knew nothing of the struggles their friends would endure. Little did anyone know of what plans were being out into action just at that moment.

Rantaro's POV

"I guess I should start heading off to Ms. Lawson's classroom now." I stood up from my seat and started to walk out the classroom. While passing the other classes through the halls, I noticed someone sleeping in one.

It was not too far from where I was supposed to be, so I didn't see any harm in stopping by. As I got closer, I realized it was Kaito. 'Why's he still here? Shouldn't he be home by now?'

I walked over and shook him gently which was kind of dumb since it didn't work. So I smacked him on the head.

"Hey. Wake up."

"Mm."

"Wake up, C'mon."

"What time is it?" Kaito asked while rubbing his eyes. I sighed and answered as he was genuinely curious. "4:37, PM of course. (16:37)"

"Oh. What're you still doing here?" He just looked at me kind of confused. I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. "Ms. Lawson wanted to see me after class. How about you?"

He looked slightly surprised, saying he was staying for the same thing. I proposed that we just walk over there together. He agreed. "It'd be pretty senseless to go there separately, right?"

I nodded and he stood up. We talked casually on the way there. Nothing special. Soon enough however, the topic of Kokichi came up.

"So, how's the whole situation with him going?" He asked me while staring forward blankly. I stayed quiet for a few moments and finally responded. "Pretty complicated. We've stopped talking lately... But I think he's been avoi-"

"There you two are! Come over here!" Ms. Lawson interrupted the two of us and led us to her classroom. We went along with it, that is until we heard that.

BANG

"What was that?!" Both Kaito and I quickly turned to the direction of the noise. Just as we were about to go and investigate, Ms. Lawson put her hands on our shoulders. "I'm sure it's nothing. Come along now, we have much to discuss."

"But Ma'am!" Kaito tried to argue but she wasn't having it. "Now! Follow!"
I shook my head and went to join Kaito as he walked off. But then....

Click "Not another step." I suddenly felt cold metal was pressed up against my head. It was deathly silent. My heart was banging in my chest and my breathing became more rapid. We were both completely still.

"Both of you, turn around and walk in front of me to my classroom. Make so much as a single strange movement or sound, and I pull the trigger." She pushed my head with the gun and told us to move.

~Meanwhile~

"C'mon! This way!" Kokichi pulled on his friend's hand to follow the sound. "Are you sure about this?" Shuichi questioned.

Kokichi put his hand on his hip and nodded. His best friend continued to hesitantly comply but on the way there, the shorter stopped. Mentioning that the noise "disappeared." So the pair walked back silently to the classroom.

As soon as the two opened the door and took a few steps, the door slammed shut and the lights were turned on. Out of nowhere, several students jumped out and screamed.

"Ah!" Kokichi yelped and took a step backwards out of shock. He tripped on the leg of one of the desks and fell to the hard wooden floor.

Kokichi's POV

I opened my eyes and tried to get back up but ended up falling on my ass again. "Shit that hurt!" I heard a giggle and looked up to see who the hell that was.

'Oh, just a stupid emo detective.'

Shuichi smiled at me, shaking his head and gave me his hand. He pulled me up and hugged me. He whispered into my ear softly. "Thank goodness you're oka-" Suddenly, time stopped for a moment then started up slowly.

The window shattered and students screamed. I could feel something warm going down my arms and head. A weight was abruptly put onto me and I could feel myself falling.

I looked up to see Shuichi's shocked face.....with blood running down his head as his body went limp and he fell on me. "Shuichi?"

A/N: I'm an absolute piece of shit.
