10. Awkward Conversations

"Levi, for God's sake, would you please do your work?" Kenny stands over his nephew's bed with his arms crossed. This is getting ridiculous. He's so obsessed with a damn girl that he works all night on planning their next date just to crash as the sun rises. The family is falling behind the others, and even though he doesn't run it anymore, he doesn't particularly want to see it fail. The employees are complaining, and the work just keeps piling up. Kenny's patience is running low. The man wrapped in his bedding doesn't even budge. "Get up!"

Unable to take it any longer, Kenny snatches the covers off of his nephew and punches him in the stomach. "Fuck," the man finally groans. With a cough, his eyes finally flicker open. "Fuck is wrong with you? Uncle Kenny, let me sleep."

"How about you let me get on with my life and the family do their job?!" He shoots back. "God, what's gotten into you these days? You've messed around with women since we were younger, but this? This isn't right even for you."

"I'm not messing around," he mumbles as he sits up, causing the blankets to fall to the side. Kenny remembered being young like Levi, but never being enamored. Maybe it was all the killing he was busy with. "I love her."

"Just like the rest of them, right?!" Kenny shakes his head and takes a deep breath. "You have an important meeting today. Mistrasin family... I'm not coming. I'm not a part of this anymore."

Meanwhile, you are seated across from the tiny doll of a girl that Levi had spent his night on.

"So, how did you end up in this relationship?" I ask impatiently.

The girl seated in front of me lifts her pinky as she sips her tea. "Well, he saw me when I was working my shift at the orphanage and invited me out. I guess he asked my boss when I worked because he would come every day that I was working there and invite me out. Eventually I just gave in and I've been stuck ever since. Hard to say no to that kind of man..."

I fight down a grin and force myself to maintain an empathetic look. "And you don't feel anything? No love? Or even like?"

She sighs and glances around nervously. Her hair sways lightly and she places her teacup down onto her saucer. "It's like he's this inescapable gravity that comes and goes with the wind. When he's there, everything hurts, and I can't breathe. And when he's not, the world regains some of its color. But somehow, when I danced with you, I managed to breathe again. Just a little."

I pause as if waiting a moment to take it all in. "Have you tried just saying no?"

She blushes slightly and shakes her head. "He gets scary when I even seem to dislike something he does." Her eyes light up slightly and she bats her hand. "But he doesn't hurt me or anything. He's just... not someone I could ever love. And I'm too scared to push him away." She smiles. "Pathetic, right?"
