Life Changing

The carefully drawn red X's on the calendar heralded something life changing was only one day away. Chloe ran her finger over them slowly tracing each one with an unusual reverence. She giggled as she envisioned her life and how it would change in a mere day's time.

Three weeks before, she had been wasting time flipping through the screens on Pinterest and found a mesmerizing video. She watched it more than once because she knew she was coming to a fork in her road. A decision needed to be made.

Should she spend $49.99 plus shipping and handling on this item?

It was a lot of money for her -- a half day's pay. Chloe worked hard for what she earned, but if only a percentage of the happy confidence the woman in the promotion portrayed were attained, it was worth every penny spent. She'd clicked the "Buy Now" button and had been marking down the days until her mail-order miracle arrived.

Daily she would open Pinterest and pull up the video to watch it. Each time, it reassured her and heightened her excitement. She told no one about her purchase -- not her roommates, not her friends nor her family. Although she didn't want to admit it, she feared the derision she may face if they knew about her impulse buy.

She could hear them exclaim, "It's a sham!"

"What a waste of money! You are so gullible, Chloe."

But their words would be wasted because, without a shred of doubt, she knew the truth. Her mediocre life had only needed this one tool, this very item, to make everyone stop in their tracks and look at her with new eyes. That was well worth two to three times what she had paid.

She slept soundly that night dreaming of the transformative package she would be receiving. At work that morning, Chloe hummed to herself as she went about her tasks. When she caught her reflection as she passed by a mirror in the hallway, she wasn't surprised to see a huge smile. There was lightness in her step.

After returning home, she continued to open the front door just in case she missed the doorbell signaling the delivery of her package. Finally, the bell sounded. Chloe raced down the hallway, her stockinged feet slipping on the wood floor. Throwing open the door, she scooped up the package and slammed the door closed.

Closing herself in the bathroom, she was glad her roommates weren't home yet. She was going to perform the transformation and wow them when they walked in the door. She followed the instructions line by line re-reading each one to make sure she understood.

Looking in the full-length mirror, Chloe was sure she could see a change in her appearance. Yes, it was subtle, but wasn't that brilliant? You didn't want people to say, "What did you do?" You wanted them to be unable to figure out why you were looking chic and put together.

Yes, it was worth the price.
