Chapter 7: A Sorrowful Start
Hermione and Draco lay asleep on Draco's bed in Malfoy Manor. It was a few nights before New Years Eve. Hermione had decided to stay with Draco over the Christmas break rather than staying at the Burrow where Lavender, Dean, Angelina and Percy's fiancée Audrey were staying for break. Not to mention the fact that Draco would have been alone hadn't Hermione come to visit.
Cho and Harry had married three days previously and were now on their honeymoon in Barbados. The ceremony had been small and cute. The reception wasn't as good as the Finnigans, but then again Seamus Finnigan was Irish. Hermione had been a bridesmaid and Draco, to his suprise, a groomsman.
Draco now lay with his arm curled around his fiancée' petite waist. He was awoken to a pecking at the window in the middle of the night.
He lifted his head and saw an owl with a letter repeatedly tapping on the window. Draco quickly and quietly moved towards the window not wanting the irritating noise to wake Hermione. As Draco approached the owl he noticed the small St. Mungo's crest tied on a band around a talon. It was one of the birds used for emergencies at St. Mungo's. He grew nervous wondering why it had been addressed to Malfoy Manor. Reading the envelope, he noticed it was addressed to Hermione. Reluctantly he decided respect her privacy and to wake her.
" 'Mione, Hermione darling, wake up." He shook her.
"Malfoy what do you want?" She yawned."It's the middle of the night!"
"Look it's from St. Mungo's." Draco said, handing her the letter cautiously.
Hermione took it and ripped open the seal, annoyed she had been awoken from her slumber. She huffed and read the letter. Reading the words instantly put her into a state of shock. Draco noticed. She jumped up from the bed, dropped the letter, and headed straight for her trunk.
"Hermione?" Draco asked. "What's wrong?" He asked concerned by the paleness his fiancée had turned from reading the letter.
"It's from Harry." She gulped. "Cho's been hospitalized."
"What! Why?" The blond said grabbing the letter.
"I don't know, but I have to go over to him. He wouldn't send word to us, if he didn't think it was bad." A shaky Hermione replied.
"I'm coming with you." Draco stated grabbing a pair of jeans.
"You don't have to." Hermione protested.
"I'm coming with you." Draco repeated while pulling a quidditch jumper on over his head.
"Alright, lets go." Hermione said grabbing his hand.
The pair arrived at St. Mungo's. Hermione was scared stiff, hospitals weren't her strongest point. Draco pulled her to the front desk.
"We are here to see Cho Chang-Potter." He told the healers assistant.
The witch looked at then sadly.
"Friends or Family?" She asked.
Hermione found her voice. "Friends, practically family."
Draco looked at her. He had seen her look that petrified in a long time. He squeezed her hand.
The witch from behind the desk nodded. "Go down this corridor." She said pointing to the left corridor. "Then take a right. Then a left and then go straight down to the end where you take another left."
Draco thanked her and tried not think of the bad feeling he had. He and Hermione followed the directions the witch had given them, practically running. The pair eventually got to a corridor where they both saw Harry crying with his head in his hands.
Hermione ran to her brother. He turned to to see them hurrying towards him.
"Harry what's wrong? What happened?" Hermione asked holding back her own tears.
Harry tried to speak but nothing came out. Draco then decided to take the reigns on this emotional situation.
"Come on mate, tell us everything." Draco tried to soothe, with one hand on Harrys shoulder and the other interlocked with Hermione'.
"Um," Harry started. "about two weeks ago we found out, we found out..." He trailed off, crying again.
"Found out what?" Hermione asked in a quiet voice. Rubbing Harry's back.
"She was pregnant." Harry's voice cracked.
Draco and Hermione gave each other the same look.
"Potter what happened?" Draco asked.
"Well, everything was fine. We were excited. She went to Madam Pomfrey and Fleur and they said she was about a little bit over a month a long at the time." Harry tried to tell them through sobs. "And then earlier today she said she didn't feel well, but we ignored it and went to breakfast. When we came back she said she felt weak, so she went to lay down for a while. And then when, when she woke..." Harry bit down on his knuckles. "She was bleeding." He burst into tears again.
Hermione gasped and started to cry. Draco had his head down and couldn't speak. He and Harry had had their differences, but never, ever did he deserve this.
"We lost it." Harry continued. "We lost our baby..."
Hermione started to sob. "Where is Cho?" She asked.
"She's asleep." Harry said. He pointed to a door. "In there."
"Is she ok?" Hermione asked.
"Mentally, no. Physically, mending." Harry said.
"Ok, um, have you told anyone else?" Hermione asked, drying her tears.
"No. Not yet." Harry said emotionlessly.
"Um, how about you contact Cho's parents and Draco will go inform the Weasleys?" Hermione asked half looking at Harry, half looking at Draco.
Both her boys nodded and stood up.
Draco put his pride to the side and pulled Harry into a man hug.
"We're all here for you mate." He said trying to act tough, yet comforting.
"Thanks Malfoy." Harry said.
Draco gave him a weak smile and apparated to the Burrow.
When he arrived outside the Weasleys door, he noticed the sun rising and guessed it was the early morning. He walked inside where Mrs. Weasley was preparing breakfast with Fleur.
"Hello Mrs. Weasleys." He greeted both with a tone, that prepared them he was the bearer of bad news.
Molly Weasley turned around and saw the tall blond leaning up against the door, his hair ruffled and hanging loosely over his forehead. His eyes bloodshot and looking as if he was holding back tears.
"Draco darling! Whatevers the matter." She asked pulling him forward. "Is Hermione ok?"
Draco shook his head but continued to speak. "She'll be fine. It's actually, um," He gulped. "....about Harry and Cho."
Fleur who had been facing the sink turned around.
"Vat eesss ze matter?" She asked in her thick French accent.
"Um, Cho's been taken into hospital." He continued.
Mrs. Weasley gasped.
Fleur hurried towards them. "Eesss she ok, is it ze..." She put her had to her mouth noticing the information she was going to spill.
Mrs. Weasley looked at Draco, then her daughter in law then back to Draco. "The what?"
Draco licked his dry lips and looked away. "The baby." He tried to hide his voice cracking. "She's lost it."
Mrs. Weasley was instantly in tears. Fleur wiped her tears from her eyes as they fell. Draco pushed his hair back.
"Harry asked me to come and tell you. I think he could use Wease-Ron right now." Draco suggested.
"Yes, yes, of course." Mrs. Weasley said drying her eyes with her apron. "Could you wake him dear?" She asked Draco. "I'll go get Audrey, she's a healer. Uh, Rons room is at the very top, he and Lavender are up there." Mrs. Weasley spoke not even noticing the words coming from her mouth. Her heart was filled with sorrow for her adoptive son and his wife.
Draco nodded and started to climb the flights of stairs. By the time he reached the top he was dreading what he was going to have to tell Weasley. He knocked on the door.
Lavender opened it. "Malfoy?" She asked confused.
"Uh hi, Lavender, is Weasley awake?" He asked awkwardly.
"No. Come in. I'll wake him." The pregnant blond replied.
Draco walked into the bright orange room.
"Ron! Ron! Wake up!" Lavender shook him while putting on earrings.
"Uh, what?" He asked annoyed.
"Charming in the morning. Isn't he?" Lavender spat sarcastically to Draco.
Ron opened his eyes and saw Malfoy.
"What's he doing here?"He groaned.
"Not the time Weasley. Something happened to Cho." Draco spat at him.
Ron sat up.
Lavender turned around. "What happened?"
"It turns out she was pregnant." He started shakily. "And she miscarried." He tried to hide his bloodshot eyes.
Lavender looked appalled and wrapped her arms around her growing belly, Ron shook his head and put his head in his hands.
"Look Weasley, Potter really needs you right now! So get your arse out of bed and go straight to St. Mungo's." Draco ordered.
Ron followed his orders and grabbed his new Weasley Christmas jumper and a pair of jeans, then got changed.
Within ten minutes of this, Ron, Lavender, Mrs. Weasley, Fleur, Angelina, George and Audrey all stood by the fireplace ready to floo to the hospital. Draco had gone first. He stood in the lobby of the wizarding hospital and waited for the others.
Once they all arrived they followed Draco down the corridors in complete silence. They all saw Hermione explaining to Cho's parents what had happened. Harry sat in Cho's room next to her, shaking like a leaf. Ron stepped forward and knocked on the door. Harry stood up and walked to him, where he collapsed into his best friends arms and started crying uncontrollably again.
