Chapter 16: New Year, New Beginnings
It was New Years Eve 1999, Hermione was five days overdue and wasn't happy about it. Fleur had gone into labour early, Lavender had gone into labour early, even Pansy Finch-Fletchey who had had her daughter Celiette Millicent Finch-Fletchey two weeks prior, had gone into labour early! The only ones who knew the frustration she felt were Parvati Zabini, Katie Finnigan and Susan Macmillian who were all or had gone over their due date.
Parvati and Blaise had had twin boys on Christmas Eve, Mizar Vincent and Alcor Gregory. First names after the stars and second names after Blaise' friends.
Ernie and Susan Macmillian had a son called Justin Ernest Macmillian in November.
Katie Finnigan was two days overdue but was far less irritable than Hermione. Cho Potter was seven months pregnant, Lavender Weasley was three months pregnant with her second child and this time Ron was sure it was a boy.
"Why won't it come out!" Hermione groaned.
Draco was terrified to say the least. He had been walking on eggshells for the last two weeks. Anything that he said or did Hermione took offense to.
"It doesn't want to come out because you've made such a nice home for it over the last nine months." He said earnestly.
Hermione shot him a look that told him he was in trouble. "Nine months!? Nine months!? It has been nine months and five days!!" She screamed.
"Apologies!" Draco stuttered.
"I'm sorry Draco, I don't know what's happening to me!" She weeped into his shoulder.
"Sshhh!" He soothed her. "It's not you it's your hormones."
Hermione looked like someone had slapped her.
"What's wrong with my hormones!?" She asked defensively.
Harry had walked into the room at that moment. He looked petrified.
"All ahead of you mate." Draco warned.
He turned back to Hermione.
"Coffee?" He asked his wife.
Hermione sniffled. "Please."
Draco walked down the corridor in The Burrow. Audrey Weasley came rushing out of the kitchen with an excited look on her face.
"Katie's gone into labour!"
All the walls came crashing down around Draco and panic set in.
"Please! Please, don't tell Hermione! I don't think that I can handle that!"
Audrey burst out laughing. "Don't worry none of us could!"
The rest of the day was going fine until Ron opened his mouth and shouted. "The Finnigans have a baby girl!"
That's when Hermione went berserk!
"Katie went into labour and no one told me!" She shouted.
Draco was sitting on the couch wanting it to swallow him whole. Mr. Weasley came over to him.
"Don't worry I've been where you are, she'll be fine as soon as she has the baby." He said reassuringly.
"Thanks." He said with a genuinely grateful smile.
It was when Hermione was on her rampage that her waters broke.
"Oh My Merlin! What's going on?" She shouted.
Mrs. Weasley came running over to her. "Hermione dear, your waters broke. The baby's coming!"
Hermione was horrified. "The baby can't come yet!"
Draco through his hands up in defeat. "I give up!"
Ron and Bill snickered in the corner.
Draco shot them a warning look.
"Don't worry mate, now all you have to do is have your hand broken and you'll be a father!" Bill called over.
Hermione, Draco, Mrs. Weasley, Audrey and Ginny went straight to St. Mungo's where Hermione was admitted immediately.
Hermione screamed in pain as she had a contraction.
Draco held her hand and whispered reassuring things into her ear. "Come on 'Mione." "Just think after this we'll have our baby."
"Draco I can't do it!" She weeped.
"You're Hermione fucking Granger! The brightest witch of her age, the brains behind the gold trio, the junior minister for education, my wife and a woman about to become a mother! You can do it!" He encouraged her.
She scowled at him for swearing. "Bite your tongue!"
At that moment Katie Finnigan was wheeled in holding a bundle of pink blankets.
"Katie!" Hermione exclaimed.
"Hey Hermione, how's it going?" She asked softly.
"It's.....painful."
"I know but," She smiled at her daughter. "It's worth it."
"Can I see her?" Hermione asked, hoping that seeing the newborn would encourage her.
"Of course." She said, handing the baby over to Draco who held the baby close to Hermione's head.
Hermione looked a the pretty baby girl.
"Oh she's gorgeous."
Draco smiled at the baby. "Any name?"
"Aoife Magaret. (Pronounced Eee-fa.)
"Is it Irish?" He asked charmingly.
"Yes, it's Seamus' mums name and Magaret is my mums name."
"It's beautiful." Hermione whispered.
A contraction hit and Hermione buckled over.
Katie took her daughter back off Draco and left with a few wise words. "Stay strong Hermione, just think of the baby."
A few hours passed.
"Draco?"
"Yeah."
"Tell me something?"
"Like what?"
"Anything."
"Um, ok. It was this exact moment last year when we were having our disagreement about whether we'd have four or six children."
Hermione looked at him. "We're now having two-" She didn't get to finish as another contraction hit.
The contractions started coming faster and the pain increased dramatically. At 11:53 on New Years Eve the healers told Hermione she could start pushing, Draco could nearly feel his hand breaking. Mrs. Weasley had her other hand.
At 11:59 the healers could see the head, a healer came in with a a timer.
Hermione was screaming in pain.
"Come on Hermione!" Draco shouted.
And then she was born.
The healer chuckled. "And baby girl Malfoy was born seven seconds past midnight on New Year's Day 2000. The millennium baby.
Draco felt happiness fill his entire being. "We have a daughter!"
Hermione was crying happy tears.
"Hermione! We have our little girl!" He said kissing his wife.
"Our baby girl." Hermione cried.
The healers passed the baby over to Draco who showed her to Hermione. They fell in love with her instantly, at first glance. Hermione held her.
"She's beautiful!" Hermione gasped.
Draco was filled with pride, looking at his daughter, being able to say that she was his. "She's stunning, like you." He kissed them both.
"Oh Hermione, Draco! She's gorgeous!" Mrs. Weasley exclaimed.
"Well done Hermione!" Audrey complimented.
Ginny was standing in the back, staying quiet.
Draco turned to her and grinned. "Are you coming to meet your goddaughter?"
"Me?" Ginny asked, shocked.
Hermione smiled. "Of course you."
Ginny came forward and smiled at the baby. "She's my goddaughter, of course she's breathtaking!"
They all laughed.
Audrey turned and asked them. "Does she have a name?"
They hadn't talked about names deliberately. Hermione was afraid that Draco would get his hopes up for a girl and then they'd have a boy. Looks like she didn't have to worry about that though.
They both studied their daughters face.
"Isla." (Pronounced Eye-la)
They looked at each other surprised.
Suddenly they were both able to remember the dream. The examination dream, they weren't supposed to be able to remember. With the lagoon and the waterfall with th sparkling thing in it and the beautiful little girl. The dream that had brought them together.
The looked at each other again and then back to Isla.
"Isla." They repeated. "She's Isla."
Mrs. Weasley smiled. "Welcome, Isla Malfoy."
Hermione looked at her daughter, Isla.
"What about her middle name? Narcissa?" She asked.
Draco shook his head, "No. Jean?"
"Not a chance." Hermione retorted.
Ginny spoke up again. "Hermione when you were younger you always liked that name, what was it Adele?"
Hermione shook her head. "Adeline."
Draco looked at his baby girl.
"Isla Adeline Malfoy. I like it, Adeline's latin right?"
Hermione nodded.
"It means Of Nobility."
Draco chuckled. "Well then it's perfect, she's a Malfoy.
Hermione smiled. "Isla Adeline Malfoy, my daughter. It suits her." She said looking at her sleeping baby.
"Then it's settled. Welcome to the world Isla Adeline Malfoy." Draco said holding his daughter.
A healer was holding back a reporter outside. Ginny went over to see what was going on.
"He wants the name and picture of the millennium baby."
Draco stiffened and looked at Isla. He then turned to Hermione who nodded.
"Let him in."
Mrs. Weasley and Audrey giggled. "Well would you look at that Isla you're already famous!"
The reporter came in. "Sorry to disturb you Mr. And Mrs. Malfoy, I'm Sammy Wilkin from The Daily Prophet, I've been asked to write an article on the millennium baby. I was just wondering if I could get a name and picture."
He seemed genuinely nice to Hermione. Draco's protective instincts kicked in and he remembered all the awful things Rita Skeeter used to write about Hermione.
"Of course, on the conditions that everything written is positive, the picture doesn't get sold to any other newspaper and Rita Skeeter from the Me, Myself and I section gets absolutely no say in what is written." Draco demanded.
"That woman is a disgrace to the reporting profession, Mr. Malfoy and I can guarantee you that she won't be allowed within a mile radius of the article until it's published, and as for the other conditions I can also guarantee that they won't be broken." He said truthfully.
"Ok then you can take your picture." Draco allowed him to come forward.
"Oh isn't she beautiful." Exclaimed Sammy Wilkin.
Draco smiled at his girls.
"Ok, on the count of three, all three of you together.
In the picture Hermione was smiling and holding Isla, Draco was also smiling and had his arm around them, then they would look at Isla and fix her blanket and then look back up again.
"Such a beautiful family, you have." Sammy smiled at them.
He came over closer.
"Would you like to hold her?" Hermione offered.
"Yeah sure, why not." He smiled and took her from Draco.
"Hello gorgeous! What's her name?" He asked.
"Isla." Draco answered. "Isla Adeline Malfoy."
"A lovely name for a lovely girl." He said.
Hermione watched him. Noticing his practiced hands rearranging her blankets.
"You have children don't you?" She asked smiling.
He chuckled. "Yeah, six of them."
"You see, he has six!" Draco exclaimed turning to Hermione."
"Oh Draco! Not this again!"
