Chapter 10: Matrimony Maintenence
In those six weeks before the wedding a lot had to be done. The wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses and suits had to be bought. The delivery of 5000 candles had to be collected by special owl delivery, the seating arrangement had to be prepared and that was just half of it. Along with that everyone had to study for the N.E.W.T's that were fast approaching. All seventh years had to arrange accommodation for when they left school, as the first group of students had to be married by the end of July, the group after that August and so on. Parenting lessons had started, to Ron's relief. Lavender was seven months pregnant and extremely hormonal.
Draco and Hermione, along with their wedding parties had decided to head to Diagon Alley one Saturday to buy their wedding outfits.
"So what exactly are we aiming for again?" Draco asked while grabbing his cloak.
"Class and elegance without being snobbish." Hermione replied while putting on her shoes.
"Perfect." Draco replied. "I'll see you later." He said, giving her a quick kiss goodbye.
"Uh Draco?" Hermione asked deciding to test his memory.
"Yes."
"Where do you have to be at six o'clock?" She asked keeping a plain face.
"Um, I know this." Draco replied panicking.
"At the jewellers to pick out wedding rings you idiot!" Ginny said stepping into the room.
"How did you get in here?" Draco asked turning around.
"Hermione's can't whisper, especially when it comes to passwords." Ginny explained, falling on to an armchair.
"Fair point." Draco shrugged.
Hermione's jaw dropped, her best-friend and fiancé, who priorly hated each other, were now ganging up on her.
"And at the jewellers to pick out wedding bands." Draco answered Hermione' question with a smirk.
"Is anyone downstairs already?" Draco asked Ginny.
"Harry, Ron, Zabini, Nott, and Goyle, who happens to look quite confused as to why he's going suit shopping for his friends birthday party. As he so put it." Ginny said, emphasising every word.
"I've known the boy his whole life and he still can't remember my birthday's in June." Draco said annoyed.
He left the room and headed down the winding steps to the portrait hole. A thought popped into Hermione's head and ran down after him, leaving Ginny by herself.
"Draco?" She called running after him, as he swaggered down the corridor.
He turned around. "Yes, love. He answered.
"I'm just double checking, you'll be twenty in June, yes?" She asked.
"Yeah, you know that darling, I'm the oldest in our whole year." He replied,
slightly amused.
"Slipped my mind." Hermione replied. "See you later."
"Bye." Draco replied with an amused and confused look on his face.
Hermione knew his birthday, she had brought it up before. Lately she had been a bit forgetful, though. Draco wondered about what had just happened the whole way down to the entrance hall.
Hermione, Ginny, Luna, Cho, Lavender and Fleur all walked into a bridal shop in Diagon Alley, where Mrs. Weasley, Angelina and Audrey awaited for them. They could have gone to Hogsmeade but after all it was just a little village. Hermione' parents were still being searched for by the order, but so far, no luck.
The women all greeted each other and started searching through rails.
With every dress held up to her Hermione grew more and more frustrated. Everything was either too plain, or too tacky. Too big or too straight. Eventually she decided to just move onto the bridesmaids dresses and think about the wedding dress later. She let all five of her bridesmaids come up to her with one dress of their choice and after that it was up to her. Ginny chose an extremely short, magenta coloured dress that made both Hermione and Mrs. Weasley cringe at. Mrs. Weasley was furious her daughter would ever even dream of wearing a dress as atrocious as that. Luna came up with an orange puffy dress with strange baubles hanging of it, to which Hermione politely declined stating that it would have perfect had it not been a night time wedding, in attempt to not hurt her friends feelings. Cho chose a midnight blue, long dress that was extremely elegant, and Hermione loved straight away but it was just too tight for Lavenders and Fleurs growing baby bumps. Even if they had altered it magically it just wouldn't have looked right. Lavender came up in a lavender coloured ballgown, which was also declined. Then it finally came to Fleur who was going to be heavily pregnant at the time of the wedding and just decided in a very un-Fleur like manner to just trust Hermione' choice. Hermione then asked Mrs. Weasley, Angelina and Audrey to choose a dress. Mrs. Weasley brought out a mustard yellow, knee length taffeta dress, which Ginny objected to. Angelina chose a pale pink long dress similar to Cho's, which Hermione liked but for the same reason as Cho's was declined. It was then Audreys turn who pulled out a light coloured, adjustable, knee-length dress that had a sweetheart neckline. It was classy and elegant. It was simple and beautiful. It was adjustable, it was the dress Hermione wanted her bridesmaids to wear. It was loved by all of them and agreed upon. That was the bridesmaids dress.
Draco had had a much easier time with his groomsmen. They went into a shop. They first picked out his jacket, waistcoat, trousers, shirt and tie. Which was a black suit and white shirt with a sophisticated metallic grey tie. Then they decided on a grey suit, matching his tie, a white shirt and plum coloured tie for his groomsmen. They then left for the leaky cauldron where they drank and ate for the rest of the day.
On her way out of the bridal shop Hermione noticed and old small wedding boutique and asked the others if they would mind going in, just for a look. Lavender and Fleur who were seven and eight months pregnant decided to head to the leaky cauldron to rest their feet, Luna, and Ginny went with them. Which was probably for the best as the Weasley women were non-stop arguing with each other. It was just Hermione, Cho, Audrey, Angelina and Mrs. Weasley left. They stepped inside where an old witch sat behind the counter looking utterly surprised she had any customers.
"Hello, hello." She greeted them. "I'm Winnie, here to assist any bridal matters." She rambled. "Who's the bride?"
Hermione stepped forward. "Good Lord! You're Hermione Granger!"
Hermione was shocked someone recognised her. "Yes, yes I am."
"And these lovely ladies would be?" Winnie asked gesturing to the rest of the ladies.
"Um, this is Mrs. Weasley, my second mother." She said pulling her forward.
Mrs. Weasley blushed and hugged the girl who had been a second daughter to her for nearly ten years.
"And these are her to-be daughters-in-laws Angelina and Audrey." She said putting her hands on either girls shoulders.
"And this is my friend and bridesmaid Cho." She said gesturing to Cho.
"Nice to meet you all now lets get down to business!" The witch said excitedly.
"Is their anything you like that you've seen?"
"Um, well. I love lace, and I don't want anything puffy or big." She said apprehensively.
Winnie thought for a minute. "Shoulders or no-shoulders?"
"Preferably with shoulders." She answered.
"Embellishments?"
"Maybe a little touch would be ok." Hermione answered.
"I've got it!" The witch cried.
She took Hermione away from the others and brought her into the back room. She put the bride-to-be's hair up in an elegant knot, and then placed a beautiful slide in the side of it. She put her into a dress exactly described by Hermione.
"You look breathtaking!" The old witch exclaiming.
Hermione decided not to look in the mirror until the others saw her. When they did there were gasps and jaws were dropped. All of a sudden Hermione wanted to see what she looked like.
In the mirror stood not a war hero, or a girl forced into an arranged marriage or even the brightest witch of her age. No. There stood a stunningly, beautiful, elegant, sophisticated woman who was going to marry the man she loved.
Mrs. Weasley and Audrey started to cry, and Angelina and Cho had a smiles that was reaching their ears. Hermione felt tears prick her eyes. There was no doubt in her mind on whether or not this was her dress, because she could feel it in every bone in her body, that that dress made her feel like a princess.
After the dress was paid for Hermione went to meet Draco at the jewellers, but first she stopped by the Quidditch shop to get him his 20th birthday present knowing that between then and his birthday she wouldn't have a chance to go shopping again.
Inside she questioned the wizard about the best broomstick available to buy, which was answered as the Firebolt:3rd Edition. Although it was very pricey Hermione decided to buy it. The thought of Draco's face when receiving it was far too much to resist. Draco then headed off to the jewellers, after arranging to the broom to be sent directly to Hogwarts tomorrow morning.
Once Hermione arrived at the address Draco had given her she noticed it was the most expensive jewellers on Diagon Alley. Draco came around the corner, at that exact moment.
"Draco it's far too expensive!" She exclaimed.
"Nice to see you too, darling." Draco said sarcastically. "And no it's not."
He retorted giving her a kiss.
Hermione looked down. "Draco, we can't afford that." She said pointing the the glamorous shop.
"Yes we can." He said quietly, looking into her eyes and playing with her hair. "Your a Malfoy now, Granger." He smirked.
Hermione rolled her eyes as he dragged her inside. Once inside Hermione quickly understood the appeal, everything was beautiful.
The assistant asked them questions about the rings they liked and so on. When she asked what colour they'd like, they couldn't answer so she gave them a few minutes.
"Well, what about silver? For Slytherin." Hermione compromised.
"No. Gold for Gryffindor." Draco replied.
"Not a chance." Hermione retorted.
The pair looked down. Draco saw the edge of his imprint. He pulled his sleeve back a bit.
"How about rose-gold? For us." He said holding out the rose-gold design.
Hermione smiled.
About an hour later when the rings had been ordered, the to-be Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy walked out of the jewellers abd apparated to the Hogwarts gates. They walked up the long drive.
"Hermione, you know the whole accomodation thing?" Draco asked nervously.
"Uh yeah." Hermione answered, wondering where he was going with this.
"Well Malfoy Manor is a bit, big for two people. I was wondering if you wanted to move to somewhere smaller until, you know, we have a child?" He bit his lip.
"Or you know what that's a stupid id-" he was cut off.
"No Draco, that's a brilliant idea! I was thinking the Manor was way too big for two people." She commended him.
"It's settled then. We'll get a flat until the first of our six is born." Draco said smiling.
"I thought you didn't care about how many kids we'll have anymore!" Hermione whined.
Draco smirked, interlocking his hand with hers. "I've changed my mind again, I want six!"
"Four!"
"Six!"
"Oh, not this again!" Hermione groaned.
