Why? >>1<<

So, I can't believe I haven't done one of these yet. This type of one shot is the main reason I started this. So, in honor of Infinity War coming out on Netflix, here is, Why?

Just pretend the trailer didn't happen.

(((Warning; some language(depending on what you count as cursing) and some angst(I hope. I've been in a good mood, Christmas and all))))

'I'm sorry...'

Tony Stark squeezed his eyes shut. Those two words kept rattling around in his head. They flew in his mind, slamming around like a bird in a glass cage. So close to escaping...yet, so far. So pained to be denied their freedom. Forever tormenting their captor.

It had been two days since Thanos won. Two days since Quill lost his cool. Two days since Tony had been beaten and stabbed. Two days since Strange gave up the Time Stone. Two days since... since Peter, since everyone, died. Two damn days.

Tony was in shock. He knew he was in shock. But he didn't care. Two days ago, he held a dying kid in his arms. A kid he knew, and cared for. A kid he helped and mentored. He told him everything was going to be ok when they both knew it wasn't. He lied to him as he died. And then the kid apologized to him. It was Tony's fault that he was there in the first place. If he had just made sure that Peter had stayed put he would have been fine. Heck, he shouldn't have even met him get involved in the first place.

Damn it.

How could he have let this happen? He was supposed to be the Invincible Ironman for heavens sake! The Earth's mightiest Avenger. But now...now, he was just a broken man in a broken suit of armor. He failed. He had failed his team, his kid, his planet, and the whole darn universe. He was a failure. Why had Thanos let him, of all people, live? Why had Nebula help stabilize his wound? Why was she flying him back to Earth? He didn't deserve help or mercy. Not after what he caused. Not after all the pain and suffering he had helped inflict on the universe.

"We're here. Where do you want me to go?"

Tony didn't move. He didn't even bother opening his eyes. He just mumbled out a string of coordinates and vague instructions. He wasn't even sure if Nebula heard him. He didn't care if she did. She could just drop him out of the barely functioning ship mid-flight for all he cared.

But, she must have heard him because after what felt like years, but was only an hour or two, the had landed in a battle weary Wakanda.

Tony stayed seated as Nebula got up and walked over to the ships ramp. He just stayed still and stared at his hand. He hadn't taken his eyes off of what was in his grasp for the last two days. The ashes of Peter. He had grabbed a fist full as he turned to dust and hadn't let go. He wouldn't let go. It was all he had left.

She lowered the ramp, they had been damaged and now had to be opened and closed manually, only to be met with shouts demanding they surrender. That, or they would be shot. Or speared.

"Stand down and exit the craft slowly!"

Tony almost looked up at the new voice. It carried over all the other ones. The power it held silenced everything else and commanded everyone's attention. It was the type of voice that made you just want to obey their every word. There was only one person Tony knew who had a voice like that. Steve Rogers. The first Avenger. His ex-teammate, now enemy.

Tony's surprise at him actually being alive was what almost pulled him from his detached mindset. That was, until Tony realized that, of course Steve survived. He was Captain America after all.

But, that didn't matter know. It didn't matter who he was. It didn't matter what he had done. It didn't matter why they weren't on speaking terms. Their arguments and clashing view points seemed so trivial now. They didn't matter now that almost everything was gone. After he had failed everyone.

"I'm coming down!" Tony registered Nebula's vaguely robotic-sounding voice somewhere in the back of his mind. But one again, he didn't really care. "There is still someone on board." She warned.

Huh. Guess she didn't want anyone to come on board and kill Tony because they weren't expecting him to be there. For why she cared about him, he had no idea. He had done noting to earn her sympathy or care.

There was a pause outside before, "Come out slowly and no harm will come to you." Tony didn't move. "I don't think you going to get him that easily." Nebula said with an audible sigh. By now, Tony was half listening to what was going on. They were just so loud. Why couldn't they just let him wallow in his self-hatred and despair in peace?

"Why not?"

"Go see for yourself."

Welp, here is part one. I originally was planning on just one chapter, but I felt like this was the perfect place to stop.

Until next time!!
