~Chapter 7~
"MADDY!" (Y/n) exclaimed, engulfing her friend in a tight hug. It was a Saturday- only another 3 more days until her departure and the two had already gathered 75% of the cash they needed. The anticipation had been getting to both of their heads as they brain stormed for more ideas on earning money.
By now, no one went to their car wash as customers either didn't trust them to touch their car or had their car cleaned by them already.
Maddy had earned all the pocket money her parents would allow and it wasn't like either of them were going to have another birthday anytime soon.
They were out of options and that's probably what got to (Y/n) the most. The fact that they only needed another $375 seemed to only make the matter worse.
"We could walk people's dogs?" Maddy suggested. (Y/n) shook her head.
"My parents are severely allergic... I wouldn't want to risk anything." She had pointed out.
"We could street perform!" Maddy exclaimed.
"We need a licence for that." She argued.
"Then let's get a licence!" Maddy urged.
"I'd love to but that costs money." (Y/n) sighed in defeat.
No matter what they thought of, there always seemed to be a problem with the idea, whether it was health and safety issues or costed too much money, the girls agreed that they were at a fork in the road. Maddy wrapped an arm around her friend.
"Try to cheer up! We don't have that much to go anyways! Only another $375!" Maddy grinned.
"I guess so..." (Y/n) agreed before sitting on her bed and sighing.
Maddy began to bounce upon the mattress. "Don't worry, we will figure this out- I know we will!" She exclaimed.
"Yeah but $375?!" (Y/n) exclaimed. "I doubt we could raise that kind of money in the short time we have..." (Y/n) was feeling everything but hope, they were so close yet so far as if it were all some game of pacman and they only needed one more pellet to win yet the ghost was hot on their tail, getting closer and closer with one life.
"Okay there isn't much to do but... Oh! I know!" Maddy exclaimed, snatching up her phone hastily and dialing a number. (Y/n) tilted her head.
"Who are you calling?" She asked. Maddy placed a finger to her lips.
"My uncle." She said. "He works at NASA. At this, (Y/n)'s eyes widened in surprise. "Currently, they are undergoing a test for zero gravity- they pay approximately $15000 dollars just to lie in bed and do nothing!" Maddy's eyes lit up.
"I've read about that- isn't it a myth?" (Y/n) asked. Maddy laughed.
"A myth? Nah! It's real!"
"Well I also read you stay in bed for at least 87 days... I don't think we have that much time." (Y/n) responded doubtfully.
"Course not!" Maddy grinned. "That's where my uncle comes in- his wife is currently in that process and about to leave- she will be paid loads of money and her favorite thing to do with that money is spend it on me! I can simply ask for it in advanced and there is our easy $375!" Maddy insisted.
The very thought sounded odd to the girl. This was like taking someone else's pay from a job- Maddy's aunt had worked for that money- (Y/n) hadn't, generous aunt or not, it was wrong. She tugged on her friend's sleeve to grab her attention.
"Don't do it!" (Y/n) mouthed, shaking her head furiously. Maddy lifted her hands up in confusion.
"Why?" She mouthed back.
"I have a better idea!!" (Y/n) could feel the regret as soon as those words left her mouth. Maddy hung up the phone and waited for her to speak. Now she really was stuck. She could only pray to get a double digit when she rolled the dice...
"Yeah?" Maddy asked enthusiastically.
"Well, we could dooooo...- TUTORING!" She blurted out, covering her mouth in surprise.
"Tutoring?" Maddy asked unsure. (Y/n) nodded. Maddy returned a shrug. "If you're sure then." She said. (Y/n) beamed as she pulled out a schedule.
"I'll start writing the schedule for classes, times and costs." She said as her friend opened up her phone. "Who ya texting now?" She asked.
"Uh...no one." Maddy responded. "I just need to visit someone real quick... wanna come?" She asked, placing her phone back in her pocket.
"To where exactly?" (Y/n) asked.
"My place, it is only five minutes away, I also need to grab something...for uh...the tutoring! Come on!" Maddy stood up and ran off leaving her poor friend to run after her.
"Wait! MADDY! I thought... we were making a tutor plan!?" (Y/n) panted heavily with every stride.
"I know! This will help, just keep up!" Maddy laughed as (Y/n)'s arms started flailing around. The two had ran about another four blocks down the road before a sharp turn was made. They soon walked up to a giant house.
It had about three stories and was painted a soft sky color. There were a couple white stairs that led to a front door with white glass panes. The path up to the house had blue and white flower bushes lining the sides and the grass was cut neatly. The house gave the impression that someone with an OCD for tidiness would live there.
Maddy walked up to the front door before producing a silver key out of her pocket. (Y/n) eyed the key as it was inserted into the lock. "Is this your place?" Maddy nodded. "I had no idea your house was so tidy." Maddy laughed.
"We have a house keeper who is OCD about presentation and stuff." Maddy pushed the door open and let (Y/n) in. "We won't be long, my aunt comes back from NASA in about three hours." Maddy said excitedly. (Y/n) froze and whipped her head to face her friend.
"Yeah my aunt is dropping by before going home I know-"
"No!" (Y/n) said worriedly. "We agreed to not take the money from people!... I can't believe I got tricked into coming here, I mean, it's partially my fault but-" Maddy gripped her friend by the shoulders and steered her down the long hallway.
"And here we have the typical (N/n) being so modest... CHILLAX GIRL! My aunt is incredibly nice!" Maddy turned left and into a spacious living room. Three red sofas lined the walls with a white fluffy carpet being placed in front of an open fireplace.
It was always uncomfortable to be sitting in someone else's home, especially when they were tons richer than herself but this time it was plain awkward since Maddy knew about her family struggles. Maddy would attempt to not show too much of the house to her friend to make it seem as small as possible however her house keeper, Clarence made things worse.
Whenever (Y/n) would see Clarence doing a house chore, it just made her more miserable on the inside that she would never be able to afford those kinds of things.
Maddy took the weight off of (Y/n)'s chest however by suggesting to skype Hiro. She pulled her new laptop out and got (Y/n) to sign in. She didn't even bother texting Hiro, she just simply pressed the green call button knowing very well he would be at his computer.
Sure enough, after the fourth ring, Hiro had appeared in the screen, red faced and dirty with baking ingredients. "Hey girls!" He cheered. The three of them burst into laughter.
"Why do you have icing in your hairs and cake batter on your cheek?" Maddy grinned.
"Oh this?" Hiro pointed to his face. "Yeah I was baking with my Aunt Cass- although I shouldn't have been left with the electric mixer I guess..." He grinned sheepishly.
"So you ran from the kitchen to answer this call?" (Y/n) asked.
"Yeah... who knew running up stairs could be so tiresome huh?" He asked, earning a chuckle from his friend.
"Hiro, I don't think it's the stairs, I think it's you- you should really stop the gummy bears." Hiro only shrugged.
"What were you making that got you this messy?" Maddy asked.
"Oh! The ice cream cake! Might as well start since (Y/n) is gonna be here iiiin-" Hiro stretched his words as he leaned over to check something. "Holy megabot! THREE DAYS! WOO!" Hiro's face grinned as (Y/n) returned a look of shock.
"Th-three days already?!" She spluttered. Hiro noticed her change in behavior.
"Yeah..why? Is something wrong (N/n)?!" Maddy looked at her friend.
"Uh no! That's (Y/n)'s face of uh...um... EXCITEMENT!" She blurted out. Hiro looked at his friend.
"Yeah..he he I didn't think the day was so close... time flies huh?!?" (Y/n) shrugged. Hiro nodded, looking at the girl strangely. Their conversation was cut short from Aunt Cass calling Hiro back down.
"Looks like I'm needed! Sorry to cut this conversation short ladies but I gotta run!" Hiro said apologetically.
"Sure thing!" Maddy said as they all said their goodbyes. The call ended seconds later. (Y/n) sighed before flopping backwards and into the couch. Conveniently, the front door had swung open as footsteps could be heard.
"Maddy? Are you home?" A voice called. Maddy's eyes lit up as she darted to the front door.
"Aunt Kristine!" She cheered, hugging the woman. (Y/n) slowly followed her friend, smiling politely at her Aunt. The woman known as Kristine looked at (Y/n) before parting the hug with Maddy.
"Hello! Who are you?" She asked sweetly.
"Oh! Aunt Kristine, this is my best friend (Y/n)" Maddy introduced. (Y/n) waved quickly as Aunt Kristine lead the two girls back to the living room.
"How was your little job?" Maddy asked.
"It was very interesting, you should try when you are older." She replied. "So, tell me Maddy, what have you and (Y/n) been doing?"
"Oh! We have been earning money!" Maddy exclaimed. Aunt Kristine rose a brow.
"Money? What for?"
"Well you see, I need to earn money for a plane fee, I want to visit my friend in San Fransokyo but I can't afford it so Maddy has been helping me earn it." (Y/n) didn't know why she became so open with Maddy's aunt, perhaps it was her soft voice or kind face, either way, she began to rummage through her bag.
"Aw that's so sweet! How much more do you need?" She asked, pulling out a brown leather wallet. (Y/n)'s eyes widened. She frantically waved her hands about and shaking her head.
"Oh no! I can't accept money! That isn't right of me to do so!" (Y/n) exclaimed.
"She needs $375 Aunt Kristine." Maddy said.
"$375?" Aunt Kristine repeated.
"Well yes but I can't-"(Y/n) was cut off by a thick wad of cash being placed in front of her. "I..i really shouldn't!" Maddy snatched the money off her aunt and stuffed it in (Y/n)'s pocket. "Maddy!" She scolded. Maddy laughed.
"Do something for yourself (Y/n), take it."
"Exactly! Besides, a friend of Maddy's is a friend of mine!" Aunt Kristine insisted. (Y/n) only smiled feebly and nodded. This woman had resembled Aunt Cass in so many ways that it reminded the girl of her mother like abilities.
(Y/n) could remember Aunt Cass as if it were only yesterday she saw her. "Thank you so much Ms-"
"Call me Aunt Kristine." Aunt Kristine cut her off. (Y/n) smiled.
"Thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me...Aunt Kristine." She said. Maddy grabbed her friend's hand and squeezed it.
"You do know what this means right?" She asked. (Y/n) frowned in confusion. "You better get packing bestie- you're going to San Fransokyo!"
