~Chapter 4~
It wasn't for another 2 years until (Y/n)'s life took a down turn once more. At the age of six, her family once again moved away, moving into a smaller house at least 2 hours away from her first. Of course by now, (Y/n) had realised her family's predicament, struggling to cater for themselves, let alone herself.
And while (y/n) struggled at home, her best friend, unbeknownst to her, was also having a hard time.
Hiro found himself passing through school at a relatively easy pace, skipping grades and proving to be a rather intelligent kid but since he no longer had a friend to keep up at the same pace as him, his social life soon crumbled, he shut people out and barely came out of his room. By the time he graduated at 14, he would speak to no one outside his home except for (Y/n).
At the same time, the girl was 13, she had moved several more times, in result, each home smaller than the last, the amount of property they owned decreasing as well. They no longer had a car or insurance for most things and the fact that no one wanted to employ (M/n) or (D/n) made things even worse.
Of course, Hiro noticed over time at how (Y/n)'s location changed, whether the computer labs in the school looked different or the uniform she wore, it all lead to suspicions that he could never fully figure out.
As time flew by, (Y/n) and Hiro both got along well, not exactly knowing what other downturns had occurred in each other's lives.
And eventually, (Y/n) got sick and tired of moving, changing schools, being the odd one out and lying to her best friend.
But, thankfully, (Y/n) only had to spend one more year of pain at high school, graduating at the end of the current year.
The (H/c) haired girl sighed as she jumped out of bed. Monday was never a favourite day of hers but she had to go through it in order to greet Friday. Jumping out of bed, she grabbed her plain grade 12 uniform and dashed to get changed.
(Y/n) quickly pulled her and socks shoes on and stuffed her tiny worn out bag with her notebooks and half chewed up pencils. Checking the alarm on her nightstand, (Y/n) grabbed her old beat up phone she managed to fix after a kid chucked it into a bush at the playground. Technically it wasn't stealing- the kid threw it away for a reason, it just so happened to be because they needed an excuse for a new phone.
That was a sensitive subject for the girl. The fact that people blew money and wasted things to find an excuse for entertainment hurt her deeply, knowing that she struggled with money herself.
The girl walked towards the kitchen and grabbed an apple before walking outside into the chilly air. (Y/n) pulled her hand me down scarf tighter around her neck, absorbing whatever warmth was left. Although this was the same schedule every morning for the past 9 years, it still felt uncomfortable when others stared at her summer attire.
Rushing through the school gates, (Y/n) snuck around the main building and entered the maths block, cautiously going into the room labelled as "Computer Lab". But what startled her was the fact that the lab lights were on and a screen was illuminating a certain area of the room.
(Y/n) quietly walked towards the light, confused at who else would be in the room. It was only ever her as it wasn't permitted to enter the computer lab before school hours, (Y/n) only broke this rule to contact Hiro. But here was another person using the computer. Thinking it was a new student in grade 7, (Y/n) decided to warn her about the school rule.
All at once, her (e/c) eyes made contact with a pair of blue-green ones. "Gah!" a voice which sounded like a female's gasped, the computer monitor was turned off as the girl stood up. "I'm sorry! Please don't tell anyone I was here!" She begged.
"Hang on a second-" (Y/n) was only interrupted by the girl dashing for the door, her blond hair trailing behind her. And once more, (Y/n) was left alone. Sighing, she sat down on a nearby office chair, turning the computer monitor on and logging into the school system with a teacher's account. Quickly, she shut down every piece of data that blocked communication applications and opened up skype, logging into her account to find a message from Hiro.
"Hey (Y/n) Tell me when you are ready to skype!"
(Y/n) looked around the room until the clock caught her eye. 7:45. Perfect. Opening the chat box, she quickly typed in a simple "Hi, I can call." Leaning back in the chair, (Y/n) waited patiently for Hiro to video call her, thinking about who the girl she had previously encountered was.
Obviously she knew about the school policy, but what was she up to? Quickly walking to the computer that was previously used, she turned the screen on to see a google search of a familiar video game called "Undertale" perhaps she was just desperate to play a game?
(Y/n)'s thoughts were interrupted by the familiar chime of somebody calling her on skype, rushing over to the computer, she found Hiro's profile picture with a "Decline" or "Answer" call button. Sitting down, she clicked the answer button and instantly smiled when she saw her friend.
It had been years since their last physical encounter so when Hiro managed to contact her parents, they immediately planned to set up a video chat.
"Hey (Y/n), how are you?" The boy grinned, showing off his small tooth gap.
"I'm good, how's Aunt Cass and Tadashi?" She replied. It was almost as if the name of the elder Hamada had a negative effect on the 14 year old, his face lowered slightly and he looked away from the camera. Noticing this, (Y/n) spoke up. "Is... something wrong?"
"What?! Oh no... I'm fine! They... are fine! Soo how's things in your house hold?" Hiro asked, his face brightening up immediately.
"Oh um... yeah Mum and Dad are good... they uh are busy with work... yeah..." She responded.
"That's good... so are you excited for the end of this year?"
"What graduating? I guess, I'm still clueless about my life you know."
"Yeah, I've been there." Hiro nodded in understanding. "But your parents can help out." (Y/n) bit her lip, as much as she wanted to tell Hiro about her current state and the real reason why she moved so many years ago, she just couldn't bring herself to say so, not wanting him to worry for her.
"That's true..." She nodded.
"Hiro! Come down here now!" A voice, unmistakably belonging to Aunt Cass rang out.
(Y/n) grinned sheepishly. "I guess you are needed..." She turned her eyes to look at the small digital clock at the bottom right hand corner of the computer screen, "Oh shoot- and so am I! School starts in a bit... I guess I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Sure! See you then!..." Hiro's smile fell a bit, he never really liked to stop talking to his best friend.
"Great! See you! Bye!" And with that, (Y/n) clicked the red phone button. Sighing, she leaned back in the chair she was sitting, only to jump back in surprise. The loud siren sound of a bell rung through the air to signal the start of another boring school day.
(Y/n) stood up and double checked that her computer monitor was shut down, dashing towards the exit afterwards in a matter of seconds. Before the girl could make her escape however. The door knob jiggled and began to move quickly. In a matter of seconds, (Y/n) found herself in the store room hiding from whoever was in the classroom. Unfortunately for the girl, it was a teacher who was busy turning on all the monitors for the day. Peeking through the gap under the door, (Y/n) could see a pair of ruby red stiletto shoes walking around. With each step, a puff of dust rose from the carpet.
(Y/n) held her breath as the teacher stopped walking near the area she was in not too long ago. She could hear the teacher mutter a small "someone was here..." before exiting the room, most likely to call for someone to help search the area.
All of a sudden (Y/n) felt as if she were in a life or death sort of situation. She crept out of the store room quickly and ran past the rows of computers and desks. Attempting to make a dash for it, she grasped the door knob and twisted it once more, throwing it open with a bang and running as fast as possible outside.
Instantly she made her way towards her first class and sat down at her desk. Math was usually the time she would finish her work then sit down and doodle pictures of her and Hiro, old memories that she didn't have any photos of.
Luckily for her, her math teacher was fairly new to the school and didn't notice her absence. Taking this as a chance, she completed all given work and handed it back before continuing to draw detailed pictures of her memories.
Occasionally, the kid next to her, Damon, would glance at her sideways and tease her for her "Childish" drawings and imaginary friends but every time, she would respond and tell him that Hiro was very much alive and real.
Eventually the bell for 2nd period was over and the class was let out, (Y/n) being the last one as she was usually shoved behind. It was break time which lasted for a dreadful 20 minutes. She found a quiet area behind the school canteen and sat down, ignoring the eyes that followed her to her spot.
She pulled out a book on robotics and continued to read where she left off last time. It was quite peaceful for once until someone snatched the book off her and held it above their head. (Y/n) sighed and attempted to grab the book, only to find out that she was in the middle of a game of Piggy in the Middle and her book just so happened to be the ball.
She watched as the pages fluttered through the air and landed in a tall girl's hands. Running after it, (Y/n) lunged herself at the girl in attempt to obtain her book. Unfortunately the girl was too tall and strong for her so (Y/n) had to run to the girl who first stole her book. It went on for another couple of minutes before the two girls realized they were wasting their time with a "Loser". They quickly ended their game by throwing the book as far as possible.
The (H/c) Haired girl snatched up her bag and tracked down her book, only to find it minuted later, in a girl's lap with what seemed to be juice all over it. "My book!" She exclaimed, rushing over to the girl and her group of friends.
"Your book?" The girl spat, looking at (Y/n) up and down.
"I'm so sorry... a couple of girls threw it-"However (Y/n) was cut off by a teacher walking behind them. The familiar sound of red stilettos clicking following after. (Y/n) dreaded to turn and face the teacher but was surprised to see that she instead aimed for a girl (Y/n) recognized from earlier that morning.
"Maddy! This morning we found a computer logged on under your name, care to explain?" her shrill voice echoed.
"Mrs Vanson! I uh... a computer had my name?" Maddy replied fearfully.
"Yes Miss Newton- I suggest telling the truth?" Mrs Vanson accused. The girl began to tremble.
"Well you see Mrs Vanson-"
"I was the one in the computer room." Everyone turned to face (Y/n) in utter bewilderment.
"(Y/n)? That's not possible dearie." She replied. (Y/n) grit her teeth in annoyance. Yet another person who she didn't know but knew her.
"Mrs Vanson is it? Right well it very much is possible because..." (Y/n) paused abruptly.
"Because?" Maddy asked quietly.
"Because I hacked into Maddy's account this morning. You see... I needed to complete some homework but I didn't want to get caught so I used her account." (Y/n) fibbed. The teacher looked at her in surprise. "I'm sure you know what I'm capable of- seeing as you know my name I assume you know all about me?" (Y/n) reminded the teacher.
"Um yes I do but (Y/n)... that's very irresponsible of you. You know the rules about the computer lab but to hack onto someone else's account?" Mrs Vanson sighed. "Alright, no one gets a detention this round because you were honest but next time you won't be so lucky, got that Miss (L/n)?"
(Y/n) nodded her head quickly as Mrs Vanson turned on her heel and walked off, her stilettos creating the same clicking sound. "I can't believe Mrs V bought that lame excuse." A girl spoke up.
"Yeah oh and here's your nerd book." The girl whom had (Y/n)'s book handed it back to her, all dry from the juice.
"How can Mrs V believe you though? What's your name? You aren't in any of my classes now that I think about it... what year are you in?" the other girl asked.
"Well... who are you guys?" (Y/n) asked shyly.
"That's Avril, Charlotte and as you already know, I'm Maddy." Maddy smiled. (Y/n) smiled back. It was the first time she had truly smiled since she last saw Hiro. The fact that that was the case made (Y/n) even happier, for all she knew, Maddy could be her new friend.
"I'm (y/n)... (y/n) (L/n)" She spoke up.
"You mean The prodigy girl? The one who is supposedly graduating this year?" Avril asked.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Maddy asked.
"Um, well no body really... you know, hangs with her sooo I'm out... no hard feelings girl, I just don't wanna be dubbed as a nerd like you or anything..." Charlotte exclaimed.
"Oh..." (Y/n)'s confidence left her body with every word. It stung to hear that these were the things that people said behind her back. "That's cool, I'm used to it..." She said.
"Okay great! See you around, let's go!" Avril called.
"We don't have to be like those other people though!" Maddy argued.
"No we don't but for the sake of our reputation, yes, yes we do." Avril explained. Maddy looked as if she were torn in two.
"But that's no fair on (Y/n)! She helped me!"
"Now let's leave before her help becomes hell!" Charlotte urged. Maddy frowned.
"Um you guys go ahead... I'll be right over." Maddy decided, waiting for the two to walk off.
"I know you are doing this out of pity... just go hang with your friends, I don't mind." (Y/n) protested.
"Who said I'm doing this outta pity?! We are going to be best friends! Like the closest ever!" Maddy grinned. (Y/n) only frowned as she remembered her friend who was currently all the way in San Fransokyo.
"Oh... did I say something wrong? Do you have another friend?" (Y/n) nodded slowly. "OH! Who!? Can I meet them? They must be really nice! Do they have any siblings? Where do they live?"
"San Fransokyo." (Y/n) cut her off before she could say any more.
"Sorry?" Maddy asked once more.
"San Fransokyo- hours and hours and hours away from here!" (Y/n) exclaimed, getting louder and louder until she was practically yelling. Maddy looked taken back at her sudden actions. "Sorry... I just... I haven't seen him for at least 9 years..."
Maddy nodded in what seemed like understanding. "Do you video chat or call?" She asked.
"Yeah... all the time, every morning-"
"Before school?" Maddy guessed.
"Yeah, that's why I was in there this morning. I don't own a laptop and my phone is on the verge of death." (Y/n) explained.
"Can't you afford one?" Maddy asked, only to smile when (Y/n) said no. "Then have my old one! My parents got me a new one for my birthday so now I have two, we were just gonna sell it online but you can have it instead! I'm sure they won't mind!" Maddy beamed.
(Y/n) smiled slightly. "You would do that for me? Even if we just met?"
"Of course! I'm sure we are gonna be great best friends! Or... friends..." She grinned. Once more, (Y/n)'s mouth curved into a smile at the thought of a girl whom she had just met, ditch her own friends to hang out with her.
"I think best friends..." (Y/n) smiled.
"But I thought you already had a best friend?" Maddy asked puzzled.
"Yeah but I can always make room for more." She nodded. Maddy jumped up and down and giggled in excitement. She didn't seem to care whether (Y/n) was a prodigy or not. Maddy was very energetic and optimistic, being one of the only people, apart from the Hamada's to make her smile.
And maybe, just maybe, meeting Maddy was (Y/n)'s first good turn in the game of life for 9 years.
